Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects >50% of pregnancies in many Arab countries. However, few studies have explored the impact of Ramadan fasting on pregnant women with GDM and no such study has been conducted in Oman. Therefore, this is the first study in Oman which aimed to examine the experience of pregnant women with GDM during Ramadan fasting. Methods: This study employed a rigorous qualitative design, guided by a constructivist grounded theory approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with women with GDM in the North Batinah Governorate of Oman at four primary health-care institutions. Purposive and theoretical sampling was utilized. Results: The experiences of 20 women were discussed during the interviews. Two main themes, “encouraging experiences” and “worrying experiences” emerged from the constant comparative analysis. Encouraging experiences included belief, family influence, embarrassment, sharing spiritual moments, and coping approaches. Worrying experiences included health problems, fear of harming babies, and advice from health-care professionals. This led to the development of the core category “Finding A Balance,” which means that women with GDM who fasted and did not fast during Ramadan were attempting to maintain their blood sugar to avoid harming themselves and their fetus. Conclusion: The insights gained from understanding the experiences of pregnant women with GDM are crucial as they guide the development of the best approaches to health education and supportive programs for pregnant women with GDM. Pregnant women with GDM who wish to fast should be informed about the potential risks associated with fasting during pregnancy.

Abstract Objective This study aims to evaluate the epidemiology of asthma among children and adolescents in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. Methods Exhaustive searches were conducted across databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Knowledge Core Collection, Embase, and Google Scholar. The selection criteria included studies reporting asthma prevalence in individuals aged 0 to 19 years, using validated questionnaires. Data were extracted and synthesized using the DerSimonian and Laird random effects model. Results The overall prevalence of asthma in Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) countries, among the 514,468 children and adolescents included in this meta-analysis, was 10.61%, synthesized from 95 studies. Among the countries studied, Qatar exhibited the highest prevalence at 16.69%, followed by Saudi Arabia at 16.57%, Iraq at 16.22%, Oman at 15.20%, and Afghanistan at 14.90%. Adolescents showed a slightly higher prevalence of asthma at 10.10% compared to children at 9.70%. Boys exhibited a higher prevalence at 11.48% compared to girls at 9.75%. Urban areas demonstrated a higher prevalence at 11.27% than rural areas at 8.29%. Conclusion Efforts to reduce asthma prevalence in Arab countries and address underdiagnosis in African nations within the EMRO are crucial. Targeted interventions should focus on addressing environmental triggers and improving access to healthcare. Enhanced diagnostic capabilities and healthcare infrastructure are necessary in African countries. Collaborative action is essential to alleviate the asthma burden and promote respiratory health across the EMRO region.

The global problem of water scarcity continues to grow because of population growth and climate change. Membrane distillation (MD) stands out as a progressing technology, demonstrating the potential for integration with operating systems powered by solar energy. Despite the increasing interest in solar-powered MD, existing literature primarily focuses on the technical aspects of the technology. There is a notable lack of comprehensive analyses that explore broader research trends, key contributors, and thematic evolution within this field. This paper addresses this gap by employing bibliometric analysis and machine learning approaches to explore trends in solar membrane desalination based on publications from 2014 to 2023. 991 publications were analyzed from various aspects, such as publications, countries, institutions, and research trends. Hot keywords include “membrane distillation”, “reverse osmosis”, “energy efficiency”, and “evaporation”. China had the highest number of publications and h-index, followed by the United States, and Saudi Arabia. The study clustered the keywords into three themes: membrane distillation, membrane materials, and reverse osmosis. Analysis of the thematic map reveals seven main research topics in solar-powered membrane desalination, classified according to their degree of relevance. Finally, future directions of membrane desalination are highlighted, including exploring economic and environmental aspects.

Background The social disapproval or stigma surrounding mental illness contributes to the postponement of individuals seeking assistance and frequently undermines therapeutic alliances between mental illness sufferers and health care professionals. Aims This study explored perceptions and attitudes towards individuals with mental illness among college healthcare students in Indonesia. Methods This study used a qualitative method. Twenty five students enrolled in six healthcare programs were interviewed using a semi structured format. The data analysis adopted a thematic analysis. Results Our thematic analysis generated four main themes: (1) general perceptions of mental health and mental illness; (2) knowledge about mental illness; (3) mental health stigma; and (4) mental health stigma campaigns. Conclusions The participants exhibited positive perceptions of mentally ill people. Students understood mental health, and they exhibited positive attitudes toward mentally ill people. Some students have stigma and lack of confidence to assist those who have mental illness. Further efforts are required to acquaint students with mental health issues and facilitate their interaction with mentally ill individuals. Anti-stigma campaigns are required to combat the pervasive stigmatization of individuals with mental illness. It is recommended to conduct a more extensive study about the stigma that students encounter in relation to mentally ill individuals.

The review analyses of progress and obstacles in the field of clean energy (SDG-7) production and storage in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The potential of specific technologies, such as solar cells, enhanced wind turbines, and bioenergy conversion processes, to produce a greener energy environment is highlighted. An assessment is conducted on cutting-edge storage techniques such as lithium-ion batteries and thermal storage systems, to tackle the irregularity of renewable energy sources and enhance the stability of the power grid. Providing a comprehensive account of significant initiatives and the policies that are propelling its low-carbon economy. The review investigates challenges related to grid integration, energy intermittency, and infrastructure restrictions. It also presents proposed solutions to improve system reliability, durability, and efficiency.

Extracting value from date fruit pomace, commonly dismissed as animal feed by date syrup factories, unveils a substantial composition of both insoluble and soluble fibers, along with valuable phenolic compounds. This nutritional profile positions date fruit fibre as an option for consumers seeking alternative fibre sources. This study investigates the extraction of high fibre date ingredient from date fruit pomace and its integration into bread wheat flour at replacement levels of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% (w/w). The research examines the resulting bread dough's properties using farinograph, rheometer, texture analyzer and optical microscopy. Furthermore, it explores the potential of high fibre dietary ingredient as a valuable fibre supplement. Our findings reveal that high fibre dietary ingredient is rich in insoluble fibre and phenolic antioxidants, has moderate moisture and protein content, and low-fat levels. It displays promising high water and oil retention capacity. However, substantial incorporation into bread flour leads to the formation of a hardened, adhesive dough with low stability to mixing. These findings provide insights into the diverse potential applications of high fibre dietary ingredient, highlighting its characteristics and challenges when utilized in baking practices.

The climate change and global warming are imminent threats to freshwater availability for human survival. Among different water desalination technologies, ion exchange membranes (IEMs) utilized in electrodialysis (ED) are emerging technologies for brackish water desalination. Enhancing the permselecitvity (PS) and water uptake (WU) of IEMs in ED is imperative to purify brackish water. In recent years, significant progress has been made in developing nanoparticle-based IEMs for performance enhancement. This review aims to highlight the integration of the different nanoparticles into polymer matrix to form mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) utilized as IEMs for enhancement in the performance of ED for water desalination. Furthermore, this review underlines the impact of morphology and concentration of different nanoparticles introduced into IEMs on the imperative performance parameters such as PS and WU. In addition, the study sheds light on the challenges in ED technology and IEMs synthesis, along with the recommendation for the commercialization of ED. Finally, the review concludes with some of the best nanoparticles suitable for IEMs synthesis for improving the performance in water desalination.

The purpose of this work is to analyze how new technologies can enhance clinical practice while also examining the physical traits of emotional expressiveness of face expression in a number of psychiatric illnesses. Hence, in this work, an automatic facial expression recognition system has been proposed that analyzes static, sequential, or video facial images from medical healthcare data to detect emotions in people’s facial regions. The proposed method has been implemented in five steps. The first step is image preprocessing, where a facial region of interest has been segmented from the input image. The second component includes a classical deep feature representation and the quantum part that involves successive sets of quantum convolutional layers followed by random quantum variational circuits for feature learning. Here, the proposed system has attained a faster training approach using the proposed quantum convolutional neural network approach that takes $\mathbb {O}{(}\text {log}{(}{n}{)}{)}$ time. In contrast, the classical convolutional neural network models have $\mathbb {O}{(}{n}^{{2}}{)}$ time. Additionally, some performance improvement techniques, such as image augmentation, fine-tuning, matrix normalization, and transfer learning methods, have been applied to the recognition system. Finally, the scores due to classical and quantum deep learning models are fused to improve the performance of the proposed method. Extensive experimentation with Karolinska-directed emotional faces (KDEF), Static Facial Expressions in the Wild (SFEW 2.0), and Facial Expression Recognition 2013 (FER-2013) benchmark databases and compared with other state-of-the-art methods that show the improvement of the proposed system.

One way the United Arab Emirates uses to increase the employability skills of its nationals is by promoting and encouraging students to pursue technical and vocational education and training (TVET). This goal includes both female and male Emirati youth. However, studies show that females are still under-represented in TVET. Therefore, this study aims at exploring Emirati female students' perceptions of their educational experiences in TVET, the challenges they faced, and their future expectations. The study followed a mixed methods design with data collected through an online survey. Findings revealed that participants have an overall positive educational experience despite the academic and cultural challenges they experience. They believe their vocational education enables them to have a better future be it a career or in continuing their education. Despite these positive influences, additional efforts are needed to improve vocational training and alter the mindset and perception of vocational education.

The aqueous amine-based method stands out as the most practical and feasible industrial approach for CO2 removal from flue gases. However, the main barrier arises in the form of the energy demands during the solvent regeneration stage of the process. Multiple Lewis acid sites (LASs) and Bronsted acid sites (BASs) on the surface of nanocomposite of MoO3/Zif-67 (MZ) synergistically boost catalytic activity. Molybdenum oxide is naturally abundant with both types of acid sites (LASs and BASs). Further treatment with phosphotungstic acid (HPW) regulates active acid sites and enriches the catalysts with three distinguishing types of active sites. The novel catalyst named MZC-HPW-20 showed improved CO2 desorption performance, boasting a remarkable 123 % higher CO2 desorption rate and a notable 52 % increase in the amount of desorbed CO2 when compared to the non-catalytic process. While showed a 32 % decrease in energy consumption for regeneration. The nanohybrids incorporating the novel catalyst played a pivotal role in accelerating the breakdown of carbamate, with active sites on their surface facilitating efficient proton transfer. This innovative approach introduces a fresh perspective to amine-based CO2 capture, positioning it as a forefront solution among advanced industrial techniques for the capture of anthropogenic and native CO2 among the available separation technologies.

Antennas play a critical role in modern technology. They are used in various devices and applications, including wireless communication, broadcasting, navigation, military, and space. Overall, the importance of antennas in technology lies in their ability to transmit and receive signals, allowing communication and information transfer across various applications and devices. Three-dimensional printing technology creates antennas using multiple materials, including plastics, metals, and ceramics. Some standard 3D printing techniques used to create antennas include Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), Stereolithography (SLA), and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). These antennas can be made in various shapes and sizes. 3D printing can help create complex and customized antenna designs that are difficult or impossible to produce using traditional manufacturing methods. 3D-printing technology has many advantages for building antennas, including customization, ease of fabrication, and cost-effectiveness. This review comprehensively evaluates the usage of 3D-printing technology in antenna fabrication.

In this study, we investigate the preliminary effect of bovine carbonic anhydrase (BCA) catalyst on CO2 capture via a reaction with potassium hydroxide (KOH) and reject brine under different operational conditions. Experiments were performed at a constant gauge pressure of 2 bar, with a CO2 inlet concentration of 10% and a CO2 flow rate of 776 mL/min. First, the impact of the BCA catalyst on CO2 capture in the absence of the alkaline material (KOH) was studied. Results showed that using 3-mg/L BCA increases the CO2 capture by 181% compared with the case without BCA. Second, the effect of BCA on CO2 uptake and ions reduction was examined in the presence of KOH. At a KOH concentration of 10-g/L, BCA concentration of 50-mg/L, and temperature of 40℃, a CO2 uptake value of 0.08 g CO2/g KOH was obtained. In comparison, adding 30-g/L KOH and 50-mg/L BCA increased the CO2 uptake by 737.5% (0.67 g CO2/g KOH). Furthermore, the sodium (Na+) reduction percentage reached a maximum of 40.8% at KOH and BCA concentrations of 30 g/L and 50 mg/L, respectively. However, increasing the BCA concentration to 100 mg/L negatively impacted CO2 capture and ion removal, indicating that the BCA concentration could be better optimized to achieve maximum efficiency. Additionally, when the BCA concentration was increased from 50 to 100 mg/L, the reaction rate remained nearly constant at 0.0047 mol/L·min.

Background: This systematic review aims to comprehensively assess and synthesize the current body of evidence regarding the role of ubiquitin-specific peptidases in colorectal cancer. Methods: This protocol adhered to the guidelines outlined in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocol (PRISMA-P) and was officially registered with the International Prospective Register for Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) under the registration number CRD42022348183. Results: This study will provide a concise summary of the synthesized data from the included studies and will synthesize key findings, explore clinical and therapeutic implications, address limitations and gaps in knowledge, and propose avenues for future research. Conclusion: This section will conclude by summarizing the key takeaways from the systematic review and emphasizing the relevance of the findings in advancing our knowledge of the role of USPs in colorectal cancer. It will also underscore the potential implications for clinical practice and future research directions.

The escalating occurrence of hospital-associated infections globally, compounded by the ongoing pandemic, has spurred researchers to delve into innovative approaches for combating pathogens and overcoming their resistance to commonly used materials. One of the most important concerns is frequently touched building components in public places and hospitals, which serve as potential sources of infection transmission, prompting a pressing need for effective antimicrobial solutions. This research developed antimicrobial polymeric composites comprising Copper (Cu), Aluminum (Al), and Stainless Steel (SS) particles incorporated into Polylactic Acid (PLA) via injection molding as a commercial method for the production of building components, to investigate the antimicrobial properties. The study aims at increasing the antimicrobial efficiency of polymeric composites with different metallic particles and tests the prepared polymeric composites (two sets of Cu-enriched composites, i.e., Cu–PLA–SS, by mixing Al–PLA with Cu–PLA, and Cu–PLA–Al, by mixing SS–PLA with Cu–PLA) against various bacteria. The results demonstrate that the samples prepared with Cu-PLA mixed with SS and Al exhibited the best antibacterial activity (98.6%) after 20 min of exposure to all bacteria, notably against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococci. In addition, the hybrid composites Cu–PLA–SS and Cu–PLA–Al, prepared using injection molding, showed similar antimicrobial activity against all bacteria compared to those prepared using 3D printing. Therefore, polymeric composites enriched with metallic particles such as Cu, Al, and SS prepared via injection molding show potential in biomedical applications, food packaging, tissue engineering, and various technological industries, offering viable solutions for environments where risks from contact with infected surfaces are a concern.

This study introduces a new and waste-to-waste treatment approach to isolate cellulose from lignocellulosic biomass. Rejected brine solution from desalination plant was utilized to remove noncellulosic components from the date palm leaves. Free chlorine available in rejected brine solution was responsible for the separation of cellulose from lignocellulosic structure. The proximate analysis revealed that the isolated cellulose exhibited a substantial volatile content of 83.70%, rendering it well-suited to produce bio-oil. Various other analytical techniques including FTIR, chemical composition analysis, proximate and ultimate analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to confirm the cellulose enrichment. Cellulose fibers with needle−shaped morphology were obtained. Cellulose fibers were having high thermal stability (Tonset = 250 ○C) and crystallinity index (64.75%) compared to raw waste (Tonset = 226 ○C; 53.58%). In addition, the activation energy (Ea) of both date palm leaves and isolated cellulose were investigated using the Coats−Redfern model−fitting method. The activation energy values obtained were 79.39 kJ/mol for date palm leaves and 103.27 kJ/mol for isolated cellulose. This research shows a completely new process for pretreatment of lignocellulosic wastes to isolate cellulose. This approach helps reduce the waste management cost associated with date palm waste and desalination plants to promote the concept of circular economy. Moreover, enriched cellulose derived from waste palm leaves using desalination brine presents sustainable options for eco−friendly packaging, textiles, biodegradable composites, and enhanced bio-oil production applications.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly expanding field. Given the dynamic nature of AI research, staying up-to-date with this evolving landscape is imperative to guide the global race in this field. Using the world’s largest bibliometric database (SciVal/Scopus), we analyzed the research output of the top 15 countries in AI research productivity between the years 1998 and 2022. Over the past 25 years, the global research output in AI has increased by 26 folds, with China leading the way in the overall number of AI publications (~281,650 articles). During this period, China and India had the highest fold growth (~240–250) and compound annual growth rate (CAGR) (~25). However, when normalized to population size and gross domestic product (GDP), Singapore (250 AI publications per million capita) and India (7.7 AI publications per billion GDP) were the best performers in 2022, respectively. When normalized to the number of researchers and gross expenditures on research and development (GERD), again, India was the best with 36.8 AI publications per thousand researchers and 0.77 AI publications per million GERD in 2020. When the overall quality of AI publications over the past decade was considered, Hong Kong and Singapore performed the best with respect to publications in higher percentile journals (the top 1%, 5%, and 10% journals), and Switzerland performed the best with respect to citations/publication and field-weighted citation impact (FWCI). Finally, when the quality measures of publications were normalized to country or research metrics, the three best performers were Hong Kong, Singapore, and Switzerland (although India stood out for citations/GERD). These three countries (along with the United States) also had the highest economic impact as measured by the patent citations per scholarly output, which was aligned with the high FWCI values for these countries. Long-term strategies to help leading countries gain an advantage in the AI frontier have been discussed at the end of the manuscript. These strategies include government initiatives and financial support, talent creation and networking, public awareness, and mindful considerations of rules, guidelines, and ethics.

Objectives: To estimate the incidence of pituitary adenomas (PA) in adult Omani patients and describe its epidemiological, clinical, and radiological characteristics. Methods: In this longitudinal, descriptive study, we reviewed the records of all PA patients from January 2015 to January 2020 who presented at the endocrinology facilities at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat. Results: The participants comprised of 112 Omani patients with PA. The incidence of PA among all adult patients at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (inpatient and outpatient) over five years (2015–2020) was 0.23%. The cohort had a mean age of 41.0±15.0 years. Of the 112 patients included in this study, 79 (70.5%) were women. Nearly half (51; 45.5%) of adenomas were prolactinomas while 46 (41.1%) were non-functioning adenomas, and seven (6.3%) were growth hormone-secreting adenomas while six (5.4%) were adrenocorticotropic hormone secreting adenomas. Headache was present in 67 (59.8%) patients, followed by visual field defects (40; 35.7%), galactorrhea (26; 23.2%), and fatigue (19; 17.0%). The majority of women (45/79; 57.0%) presented with menstrual cycle abnormalities. Radiological appearances were nearly equally distributed between micro- and macroadenomas. Most cases (58/112; 52.0%) of PA were treated medically by cabergoline, octreotide, and replacement therapies such as hydrocortisone and thyroxin, 38 (33.9%) were treated surgically (mainly by trans-sphenoidal pituitary resection), and the remaining 10 (8.9%) cases were subjected to radiotherapy. Medical treatment combined with surgery was employed for 15 (13.4%) patients. Conclusions: In our investigation, PA was primarily prevalent among Omani female patients, and the most common subtype of pituitary tumors was prolactinomas. The most common presentation symptom was headaches; most female patients had menstrual irregularities. Medical treatment was the primary approach for the applicable types of PAs, while surgery and radiotherapy were found to be secondary and tertiary treatment options, respectively.
