9. Selected kinematic characteristics of intercollegiate women triple jumpers

Abstract

Women have only recently begun to participate in the triple jump event at athletic meets. The event is divided into three phases, hop, step, and jump. The percentage distribution of each phase has varied among reports. For example, some reports indicate a 35:30:35 ratio, others, a 37:30:33 ratio. Recent analysis has shown that improved performance in winning athletes was related to a decrease in step phase and an increase in the hop or jump phase. The forward speed determines the distance jumped. Eighteen female triple jumpers from two intercollegiate track meets were subjected to similar kinematic analysis. There was no significant difference between the two groups of women in the step phase ratio. When values from both groups of women were combined and compared with men's, the step phase percentage was found to vary significantly by sex, with observed ratios of 26.7 for women, and 29.5 for men. The distance covered in each phase correlated strongly with the total distance of the jump. As observed in men, the forward speed decreased during and between each successive phase, but the magnitude of women's speed was less than reported for men. The vertical speed at take-off to each phase was medium in hop, low in step, and high in the jump phase; the angle between the body and earth at take-off varied in a similar pattern. In all phases, but especially in the step phase, the height attained correlated inversely to the total distance jumped. The results indicate that many differences exist between male and female triple jumpers. Further studies are needed see if female jumpers should alter their performance styles to correspond to that of males. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

10. Biomechanics of the clean and jerk in weightlifting national Jordanian team

Abstract

Seven elite national Jordanian weightlifters were videoed at 50 fields per second from the sagittal plane during the execution of the clean and jerk (C&J) on an AMTI force platform with 3 weights of submaximal lifts; low medium and high weights (35%, 65%, 85%) of their maximum. Linear and angular kinematics of the barbell with the ground reaction forces histories of the lower body were analysed using Kinova & APAS. A significant decrease was found in the maximum vertical velocity of the barbell during the second pull of the heaviest lift (p < 0.05). Maximum extension velocity of the hip joint significantly increased during the first pull of the heaviest lift (p < 0.05). Vertical velocity and maximum bar height decreased during the second pull, especially at 85%. Angle-angle diagrams of the knee and hip profile showed major differences among participants, especially at the 85% lift of their maximum.
