Abstract

Piezoelectric actuators provide several advantages, including rapid response time, travel control, high resolution and actuation efficiency. They are a good candidate for actuating mechanical switches designed for electrical circuit breakers. This study investigates the utilisation of an Amplified Piezoelectric Actuator (APA) in Block-Free (B-F) operational mode as an actuation unit for a Fast-Mechanical Switch (FMS) and an Ultra-Fast Disconnector (UFD) to be utilised in a DC Hybrid Circuit Breaker (HCB). Initially, the principle and construction of the piezoelectric actuator actuating scheme were described and illustrated. A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model was built to simulate and analyse the presented switch/disconnector static and dynamic behaviours. A prototype was constructed based on calculations, and the travel characteristics were experimentally validated. Subsequently, the proposed switch/disconnector was insulated once in a vacuum and later in a nitrogen gas interruption chamber. Both arrangements were integrated into a DC Hybrid Circuit Breaker test platform to investigate their interruption features. Results show that the presented switch/disconnector achieved a total gap of approximately 1 mm in 1.4 ms and interrupted a DC power of 0.6 kV/60 A within 0.85–1.5 ms in vacuum and 0.98–1.45 ms in nitrogen gas. 2. A comparison of two piezoelectric actuator concepts for fast mechanical switching in DC hybrid circuit breakers.

Abstract

Amplified piezoelectric actuators have gained considerable attention due to their inherent advantages, including rapid response, reliability, and efficiency, making them promising candidates for Direct Current (DC) switching applications. They can operate in two distinct operational modes: Block–Free (B–F) and Free–Free (F–F) configurations. These two modes offer diverse mechanical constraints and are chosen based on the application's specific requirements. This study aims to present a comparative assessment between the two modes to evaluate each configuration's applicability in DC fast switching. Accordingly, the principle behind each actuation scheme was illustrated, and both designs were modeled and analyzed by the finite element method. Subsequently, two prototypes were assembled, each resembling a different operational mode. The established prototypes were then subjected to actuation and interruption tests to investigate their travel and switching performances. Comparative results revealed that while block–free could deliver a higher apparent stroke, the accumulated gap for each configuration is almost the same. Both actuators demonstrated high capability when utilized as actuation units for fast vacuum mechanical switches integrated into a hybrid circuit breaker for DC interruption. However, the free–free operation excelled in terms of fast response, as it managed to clear the mimicked fault current faster than the block–free configuration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. Transport Coefficients of H2–Cu/Al2O3 Plasma Mixtures Considering Solid and Liquid Status

Abstract

Obtaining the plasma transport coefficients of the mixed system of arc-extinguishing medium and erosion product is the precondition of numerical simulation of erosion–diffusion in an arc chamber. In this article, the minimum Gibbs free energy method was used to calculate the composition of the H2–Cu/Al2O3 system, including solid and liquid copper (aluminum oxide), because copper and aluminum oxide are commonly used as electrode and ceramic materials in hydrogen dc contactors, respectively. The transport coefficients of H2–Cu/Al2O3 system and the phase transition of erosion products provide the basis for the subsequent simulation of erosion–diffusion of electrode and arc chamber in the H2 plasma. Results revealed that: 1) in the low-temperature range, copper (aluminum oxide) mainly exists in the form of a solid or a liquid state, resulting in the transport coefficients of the H2–Cu/Al2O3 system consistent with that of the H2 system; 2) as temperature increases, the copper (aluminum oxide) undergoes gasification (sublimation–decomposition) reaction that exists in a gaseous state and begins to affect the transport properties of the H2–Cu/Al2O3 system; in particular, the proportion of copper (aluminum oxide) has the most significant effect on viscosity; and 3) as the temperature continues to rise, atoms and molecules in the H2–Cu/Al2O3 system are completely ionized and the proportion of copper (aluminum oxide) has little effect on the transport properties (except electrical conductivity) of the H2–Cu/Al2O3 system. Finally, the transport coefficients of H2–Cu/Al2O3 plasma mixtures are reliable enough, in engineering application aspect, to be applied for simulation of erosion–diffusion in hydrogen dc contactors.

Abstract

This paper describes an operating mechanism driven by a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for high voltage circuit breakers (HVCB). It analyzes the relationship between the optimal moving contact travel of HVCB and the PMSM torque, and proposes the main parameters and requirements of PMSM to be suitable for the optimal contact travel. The simulation model of the operating mechanism driven by PMSM was builtusing Matlab. It simulates and calculatesthe mechanism’sopening and closing operations characteristics. The voltage waveforms of stator currentsanalyzing, offers a helpful reference to compile the Digital Signal processing (DSP) programs. The performances of the opening and closing operationscould be improved by debugging the DSP programs in the control unit. Introduction High Voltage Circuit Breakers (HVCB) isthe most important switches apparatus in the electric power system. They are responsible forcontrol and protect of the power system. The operating mechanism is the basic device which controls the opening and closing operations of HVCB. At present, there are several conventional types of operating mechanisms which have been widely used, such as spring, hydraulic or pneumatic. Such mechanisms have many prominent merits, but also have some insurmountable limitations. These conventional mechanismsconstructedby complex frames, need periodic check-ups, highly costsoperating and maintenance,and they are quite difficult to be debugged. Additionally, they are especially incontrollable and non-detectable during the opening and closing operations. To overcome such inherent limitations, and to improve the performance of conventional mechanisms, the operating mechanism driven by PMSMis introduced to meet the requirements. The proposed operating mechanism is based on power electronic and motor digital control technologies. This mechanism has quite a lot of good advantages: simple frames, manipulative opening and closing operations, wide range of uses and so on. Design of the operating mechanism The suggested operating mechanism consists of AC (or DC) power supply, energy buffer, converter unit, control unit, and the motor. Fig.1 (a) shows the System diagram of motor driven mechanism.The motor is controlled by an IGBT Converter, rotate speed and positions of the motor aremeasured using a fixed sensor on the rotating shaft. The travel of the moving contactor is measured by the position sensor.The control unit adopts DSPas the processing core, and according to the vector control of the motor, the control unit generates PWM signals to activate the IGBT Converter, and then drives the motor to implement the opening and closing operations of HVCB.
