3. Entropy evaluation and security measures for reliable single/multi-factor biometric authentication and biometric keys

Abstract

The growing deployment of biometrics as a proof of identity has generated a great deal of research into biometrics in recent years, and widened the scope of investigations beyond improving accuracy into mechanisms to deal with serious concerns raised about security and privacy due to the potential misuse. of the collected biometric data along with possible attacks on biometric systems. The focus on improving performance of biometric authentication has been more on multi-modal and multi-factor biometric authentication in conjunction with designing recognition techniques to mitigate the adverse effect of variations in recording conditions. Some of these approaches together with the emerging developments of cancellable biometrics and biometric cryptosystems have been used as mechanisms to enhance security and privacy of biometric systems. This thesis is designed to deal with these complimentary and closely related issues through investigations that aim at understanding the impact of varying biometric sample recording conditions on the discriminating information content (entropy) of these samples, and to use the gained knowledge to (1) design adaptive techniques for improved performance of biometric authentication, and (2) propose and test a framework for a proper evaluation of security of all factors/components involved in biometric keys and multi-factor biometric authentication. The first part of this thesis consists of a set of theoretical and empirical investigations designed to evaluate and analyse the effect of emerging developments in biometrics systems, with a focus on those related to biometric entropy and multi-factor authentication. The analysis of different biometric entropy measures, proposed in the literature, reveals that variations in biometric sample quality lead to variations in the correlation between biometric entropy values calculated using any of the known measures and the accuracy of the biometric recognition. Furthermore, analysis of the spatial distribution of entropy values in face images reveals a non-uniform distribution. The widely expected inherent individual differences in biometric features entropy will also be confirmed. Moreover, we uncover a myth reported in the literature about near perfect accuracy of certain quality-based adaptive recognition schemes.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the EMV contactless payment cards and their vulnerability of leaking sensitive information such as the cardholder name, Primary Account Number (PAN), and the expiry date of the EMV card. Such data can be sniffed using off-the-shelf hardware or software without the knowledge of the genuine cardholder. The paper proposes a tokenization technique to replace the PAN of the actual EMV contactless card's with a token to protect the genuine data from being sniffed by an attacker and used in the Card-No-Present (CNP) attack or any other attacks. The proposal was inspired by the implementation of the tokenization in the EMV Mobile payment such as Apple, Google, and Samsung mobile payments. We argue that the proposed tokenization technique is easy to adopt and cost-effective to implement by EMV protocol as it does not require any changes to the infrastructure of existing payment systems. A vital feature of the proposal is that all the changes in the EMV protocol are at the personalization phase of the EMV card. The paper presents a successful implementation of the tokenization approach using a Java contactless card framework to represent EMV contactless cards to demonstrate its effectiveness in improving the security and protecting the privacy of the card's information. 18. On the Security of the EMV Authentication Methods of Contactless Cards.

Abstract

The Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV) is the global standard for a chip-based card transaction. EMV payment specifications support a variety of payment methods such as chip & PIN, chip & signature, contactless, and mobile payment transactions. This paper is mainly concerned with the security analysis and evaluation of the EMV card authentication methods of contactless cards as well as investigating their vulnerabilities to sniffing and replay attacks. It provides a detailed evaluation of the three EMV card authentication methods: Static Data Authentication (SDA), Dynamic Data Authentication (DDA) and Combine Data Authentication (CDA). To demonstrate that, the paper presents a Java framework to simulate all the stages of an EMV contactless transaction under the three authentication methods. It also simulates the two attacks using Java contactless cards including a counterfeit card to show the feasibility of the replay attack. Our security analysis reveals that the authentication methods have a different level of robustness against the attacks. The paper shows that SDA has the lowest level of security with vulnerabilities to both attacks. The paper also demonstrates that although DDA and CDA are perceived to be secure, they are both vulnerable to sniffing attacks that can be easily launched to steal credit/debit card details. We argue that the card authentication methods share a fundamental flaw related to the trust model between the point of sale and the contactless card. While the Point of Sale (POS) enforces strict rules to ensure the authenticity of the card, the contactless cards release sensitive information to anyone with a card reader without any checks whatsoever. Abstract

The hippocampus is the region of the brain that is primarily associated with memory and spatial navigation. It is one of the first brain regions to be damaged when a person suffers from Alzheimer's disease. Recent research in this field has focussed on the assessment of damage to different blood vessels within the hippocampal region from a high throughput brain microscopic images. The ultimate aim of our research is the creation of an automatic system to count and classify different blood vessels such as capillaries, veins, and arteries in the hippocampus region. This work should provide biologists with efficient and accurate tools in their investigation of the causes of Alzheimer's disease. Locating the boundary of the Region of Interest in the hippocampus from microscopic images of mice brain is the first essential stage towards developing such a system. This task benefits from the variation in colour channels and texture between the two sides of the hippocampus and the boundary region. Accordingly, the developed initial step of our research to locating the hippocampus edge uses a colour-based segmentation of the brain image followed by Hough transforms on the colour channel that isolate the hippocampus region. The output is then used to split the brain image into two sides of the detected section of the boundary: the inside region and the outside region. Experimental results on a sufficiently number of microscopic images demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed solution.
