Aim: We investigated the public's view of increasing violence in the healthcare sector, their opinions on violence, the underlying causes of violence, and the possible ways of preventing violence. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted between November 2012 and February 2013 in central Gaziantep, Turkey. We conducted a face-to-face survey with 1600 respondents who closely resembled the general structure of the population. Results: The most common causes underlying violent behavior were failure of the healthcare staff to perform their tasks properly (15.9%) and prolonged waiting times (15%). In total, 20.3% of the respondents considered violence as a method of securing rights. The issue that disturbed the respondents most (28%) was being unable to find someone who would listen to them, whereas 13.3% believed that the doctor should be beaten or killed when a patient died. Conclusion: A large proportion of those surveyed viewed violence toward healthcare professionals as a method of securing rights. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives Complaints by patients and their relatives are an important source of information for service improvement. In order to take remedial measures, the present study evaluated the complaints of patients and their relatives about our emergency department (ED). Methods Records of all patient complaints, from June 2008 to June 2012, were retrieved from the Quality Improvement Unit (QIU) archives. All complainants were contacted by phone. The socio-demographic profiles of complainants, their reasons for complaints, and the outcomes were analyzed using the SPSS statistical package. Results The results revealed that 54 complaints have been made against our ED over four years relating to medical care, staff attitudes, waiting time, and financial reasons. Of the complainants, 75.9% were male (n=41), and 24.1% (n=13) were female. The majority (29.7%, 20.4%) of the complaints were due to medical care and attitude problems. Most complaints were made for green code patients (55.6%). The majority of complaints were about emergency physicians (38.9%). Complaint frequency was 0.18 per 1.000 visits. Conclusions Complaints are potentially useful quality assurance tools, and can identify remediable system flaws. The main causes of complaints are medical care, staff attitude, and waiting time, and many of these causes are remediable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the complaints of patients and their relatives concerning emergency service staff in the present study. Materials and Methods: The written application complaints reported to the Emergency Department of the Medical School in Gaziantep University between 1 November 2009 and 30 January 2011 were studied prospectively. In the present study, the gender and jobs of complainants, admission time and reason for admission to the emergency department, the complainants' dissatisfactions, the staff who were complained of, treatments, and the office where the complaints were applied to, the result of complaints, and the punishment that was approved were evaluated. Results: Of the complainants, 47.6% were male (n=10), and 52.4% (n=11) were female. Housewives complained most (28.6%). Of the patients, 23.8% applied a second time to the emergency department in the same day. The patient group that complained most (23.8%) had stomach trouble. Insufficient care was the major (23.8%) cause of dissatisfaction. The complainants gave the name of staff in 47% of cases that they complained of in their complaint application. The majority of (62%) complaints were delivered to the complained department dependent on the chief of staff and the assistants were complained of most (47.6%). Two investigations were opened on all doctors, and a "warning punishment" was given to them for just r one complaint. Conclusion: The emergency staffs are complained about by the patients and their relatives whose examinations and treatments were delayed due to the condition being considered simple. Medicinal leeches have been used in the treatment of many diseases for thousands of years. A 25-year-old man presented to our emergency department with bleeding from right and left side of his neck. He had applied leeches10 h previously to both sides of his neck to treat acne. The bleeding was not controlled by applying pressure with sterile gauze upon the wounds. Homeostasis was achieved by primary suture under local anaesthesia. Prolonged bleeding can be seen following medical leech application. In such cases, bleeding can be controlled by primary suture. Objective: The relationship of atherosclerosis, carotid intima media thickness, high sensitive C-reactive protein and the airway narrowness in patients who were exposed to chronic carbon monoxide was evaluated. Materials and Methods: Forty seven healthy non-smoker male furnacemen who have been working at least ten years, and 48 non-smoker healthy men were enrolled to the study. The body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, carotid intima media thickness, carboxyhemoglobin, high sensitive C-reactive protein and peak expiratory flow velocity of both groups were evaluated. Results: Carboxyhemoglobin (p <0.001), high sensitive C-reactive protein (p <0.001) and carotid intima media thickness (p <0.001) levels were found to be higher in furnaceman group. While the carotid intima media thickness (p <0.001), carboxyhemoglobin (p <0.001) and high sensitive C-reactive protein (p <0.001) values were observed significantly higher, the peak expiratory flow percentage was significantly lower in furnaceman group (p <0.001). There was a statistically significant correlation between age and carboxyhemoglobin (p <0.004); carboxyhemoglobin and high sensitive C-reactive protein levels (p <0.001); carboxyhemoglobin level and working years (p <0.001); high sensitive C-reactive protein values and working years (p <0.001); peak expiratory flow percentage and carboxyhemoglobin level (p <0.001), peak expiratory flow percentage and working years (p <0.001), peak expiratory flow percentage and age (p <0.007); high sensitive C-reactive protein levels and exposure year (p <0.001), carotid intima media thickness and exposure year (p = 0.035) in furnaceman group. Conclusion: Chronic carbon monoxide exposure increases high sensitive C-reactive protein and carotid intima media thickness in the course of time and lays the groundwork for atherosclerosis and also decreases the peak expiratory flow velocity probably via obstructing the airways. Objective: In this study, we have examined the ambulance working order in the 3 years period between the years 2006-2008 in Gaziantep city. Materials and Methods: In this study, the number of personel working in 112 ambulances, daily number of emergency exit patients, period of time of arrival of patients and arrival at the nearest medical institution, transfer of patients according to their illness, range of cases according to sex and age, population per station and automatisation between 112 emergency command centers and hospitals have been examined. Results: According to gender, the number ofmale cases were found to be more than female cases. Female case number above 65 years old has been found greater than the male cases. The highest case number has been found in the 6-25 years old group for males and above 65 years old for females.It was determined that the case number is increasing every year. The reason for calls was determined as 54.6% medical cases and 16.3% traffic cases. According to pre-diagnosis, it was determined that trauma cases decreased and the cases concerning cardiovascular system increased gradually. It was seen that a great majority of the cases were reached within the first 20 minutes. It was seen that ambulance emergency exits comprised 62.5% hospital transfer, 13.5% timely intervention and 9.5% transfer inter-hospitals. It has been determined that ambulance exit numbers were increasing every passing year. Conclusion: With this study it is concluded that planning should be done to prevent delay in reaching emergency cases due to the increase in ambulance usage and also it was determined that the communication between command centers and inter-hospitals should be at the maximum level in order to minimize the delay period during transfer to hospitals, and frequent updates of used and empty bed lists of hospitals should be made.
