Early experiences of childhood sexual or physical abuse are often associated with functional impairments, reduced well-being and interpersonal problems in adulthood. Prior studies have addressed whether the traumatic experience itself or adult psychopathology is linked to these limitations. To approach this question, individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and healthy individuals with and without a history of child abuse were investigated. We used global positioning system (GPS) tracking to study temporal and spatial limitations in the participants’ real-life activity space over the course of one week. The sample consisted of 228 female participants: 150 women with PTSD and emotional instability with a history of child abuse, 35 mentally healthy women with a history of child abuse (healthy trauma controls, HTC) and 43 mentally healthy women without any traumatic experiences in their past (healthy controls, HC). Both traumatized groups—i.e. the PTSD and the HTC group— had smaller movement radii than the HC group on the weekends, but neither spent significantly less time away from home than HC. Some differences between PTSD and HC in movement radius seem to be related to correlates of PTSD psychopathology, like depression and physical health. Yet group differences between HTC and HC in movement radius remained even when contextual and individual health variables were included in the model, indicating specific effects of traumatic experiences on activity space. Experiences of child abuse could limit activity space later in life, regardless of whether PTSD develops.

Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Untersuchung, der Vergleich und die Weiterentwicklung innovativer Messmethoden f��r die Aktivit��tskonzentrationen von Radon (Rn-222), Thoron (Rn-220) und deren Ausgangsnuklide. Dazu werden Messungen von Radon und Thoron in der Bodenluft und in Innenr��umen im Wald- und M��hlviertel und im Radioaktivit��tslabor des Bundeamts f��r Eich- und Vermessungswesen (BEV) in Seibersdorf durchgef��hrt. Erg��nzend zu den Radon- und Thoronmessungen in der Luft wird der Radongehalt in Wasserproben mittels einer Ionisationskammer und die Aktivit��tskonzentrationen von Radionukliden der Uran-Radium- und Thoriumzerfallsreihe in Bodenproben mittels Low-level-Gammaspektrometrie bestimmt. Im Zuge des Vergleiches unterschiedlicher Messmethoden werden auch die Messunsicherheiten und damit die Genauigkeit und Pr��zision der Messmethoden untersucht. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit dienen als wissenschaftliche Basis f��r die praktische Anwendung von Radon- und Thoron-Messungen. Die Arbeit wird in Kooperation mit dem Bundesamt f��r Eich- und Vermessungswesen (BEV) durchgef��hrt., The aim of this thesis is the investigation, comparison and development of innovative techniques for the measurement of the activity concentrations of Radon (Rn-222), Thoron (Rn-220) and their parent nuclides. For this purpose, measurements of radon and thoron in soil air and indoors are taken in the Austrian Wald- and M��hlviertel and in the radioactivity laboratory of the Federal Office for Metrology and Surveying (BEV) in Seibersdorf. Additionally, the radon content in water samples is determined using an ionisation chamber and the activity concentrations of radionuclides of the uranium-radium and the thorium decay chains in soil samples is measured using low-level gamma spectrometry. In the course of the comparison of different measurement techniques, the measurement uncertainties and with that, the accuracy and precision of the measurement techniques are also investigated. The results of this thesis serve as a scientific basis for the practical applications of radon and thoron measurements. This thesis will be operated in cooperation with the Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV).

This paper examines the relation between children's summer activities before fourth through sixth grade and their vocabulary knowledge in fifth grade and at age fifteen using the NICHD SECCYD dataset (N = 1,009). We used OLS regression and propensity score analyses to understand how children's summer reading, library visits, participation in enrichment classes, and unsupervised time predicts their vocabulary knowledge. Propensity score matching and OLS analyses show that time spent reading predicts vocabulary during the following two years, and high levels of time allocated to reading across three or more summers in middle childhood predicts vocabulary knowledge at age 15. OLS analyses suggest a relationship between library visits and vocabulary knowledge. There is no short-term relationship between enrichment classes and vocabulary knowledge, although our OLS analysis demonstrated that consistent enrollment in summer enrichment classes over three years predicted improved vocabulary. Historisch sind GIS Systeme haupts��chlich in Administration und Forschung zur Anwendung gekommen um geographische Datenbest��nde zu managen oder zu analysieren. Doch die Anwendungsbereiche von GIS Systemen sind heute vielf��ltiger denn je. Mit dem aufkommen von GPS ausger��steten Mobilger��ten wurde ein gro��er Teil der Menschen zu Produzent und Nutzer von geographischer Information. Diese Information, im Gegensatz zu dem traditionellen Verst��ndnis von geographischer Information, kann der Kategorie der pers��nlichen Information zugerechnet werden. Wie pers��nliche Information am besten organisiert und strukturiert wird ist bis heute eine offene Frage und die Einf��hrung von Raumbezug kann neue L��sungsans��tze anregen. Diese Arbeit besch��ftigt sich vor allem mit der Frage wie Raumbezug pers��nlicher Daten entsteht und basiert auf dem Argument das menschliche Aktivit��ten r��umlichen Kontext zu pers��nlichen Daten geben. Ein Modell von menschlichen Aktivit��ten ist daher eine notwendige Voraussetzung f��r die raum-zeitliche Organisation von pers��nlichen Daten. Im Zuge dieser Arbeit werden die M��glichkeiten und Voraussetzungen f��r ein System zum Management von pers��nlichen Daten ��ber raum-zeitliche Verbindungen diskutiert. Anhand von Beispielen wird das erarbeitete Aktivit��tsmodell er��rtert und gezeigt wie es neue Funktionalit��ten erm��glicht., Looking back at early geographic information systems, it becomes obvious that technologies nowadays are significantly different. With the emergence of spatially aware mobile computers, every day citizens became producers of spatial information. Due to these developments a new form of geographic information, namely, personal geographic information has emerged. While there are similarities to traditional geographic information; considerable differences are present too. This work explores the issues a personal assistant application needs to address in order to effectively handle and manage personal geographic information. It builds on the assumption that spatial aspects and semantics of personal geographic information are tightly bound to activities. The main focus, therefore, lies on the development of a model that allows to represents human activities from a personal perspective. The model provides a multi-granular representation of activities in place and time as well as other components, such as conceptual relations and requirements. Two use case scenarios will demonstrate its applicability. The work shows that an understanding of a user-s future, present and past activities, are essential for contextually sensitive structuring and management of personal information.

We present a concept-mapping activity, developed within a youth Participatory Action Research (yPAR) after-school program, to demonstrate how the activity contributed to young people's conceptualization of social structures as interconnected. We analyze fieldnotes from the Change 4 Good yPAR program, which includes primarily Latina/o 4th and 5th grade students attending a California public elementary school. We discuss the concept-mapping activity in terms of its processes and outcomes, and how youth constructed interconnected meanings from thematic community narratives. (DIPF/Orig.)

Die folgenden Analysen konzentrieren sich auf die Themen Vereinbarkeit von Familie und Beruf, die Frage nach der Ver��nderung von Familienleben durch die Ganztagsschule sowie die Frage schichtspezifischer Wahrnehmung und Wirkung von Ganztagsschule. Dabei wird zun��chst auf die Frage der besseren Vereinbarkeit von Beruf und Familie durch Ganztagsschulen eingegangen, um dann im zweiten Schritt in zwei ausgew��hlten Punkten den Auswirkungen auf die Familienbeziehungen nachzugehen. Im M��rz 1992 hatte der Autor den Vorsitz der Kommission von Frau Prof. Renate Nestvogel f��r zwei Jahre ��bernommen. In dieser Zeit haben zwei Arbeitstagungen der Kommission stattgefunden, wurde eine internationale Konferenz organisiert, drei Sektorkonzepte des Bundesministeriums f��r wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit analysiert, das Aufgabengebiet der Kommission erweitert, der bisherige Rundbrief in die Zeitschrift f��r Internationale Bildungsforschung und Entwicklungsp��dagogik integriert sowie auf der Konferenz der DGfE im M��rz 1994 ein Symposium und eine Arbeitsgruppe gestaltet. Im Jahre 1966, als die Bildungsabteilung des Voluntary Committee on Overseas Aid and Development gegr��ndet wurde, war ihr erkl��rtes Ziel, in Gro��britannien das Bewu��tsein f��r die Probleme der weltweiten Armut und die Notwendigkeit wirksamer Entwicklung zu wecken. Als 1977 die VCOAD - Bildungsabteilung zum Centre for World Development Education umstrukturiert wurde, hatte dieses Bewu��tsein schon erheblich zugenommen. Es galt jedoch noch zu erreichen, da�� das Verst��ndnis f��r die Komplexit��t der Aspekte der Weltentwicklung vertieft wurde, wie auch das Verstehen der unterschwelligen Interdependenz, die die Themen f��r britische B��rger genauso lebenswichtig macht wie f��r all jene, die in sogenannten Entwicklungsl��ndern leben.
