We present a comprehensive study on the electronic and magnetic properties of the EuCl$_3$ monolayer using first-principles calculations. By taking into account the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and the Hubbard effects, we elucidate the influence of these interactions on the structural properties of EuCl$_3$ monolayer. Comparing the lattice parameters obtained with the PBE+SOC and PBE+SOC+Hubbard effects reveals an increase in the lattice parameters when including the Hubbard effect. In the absence of the Hubbard interaction, the magnetic ground state of the EuCl$_3$ monolayer exhibits a preference for a ferromagnetic (FM) configuration as determined by the PBE+SOC calculations. However, the introduction of the Hubbard parameter leads to a shift in the magnetic ground state preference towards an antiferromagnetic (AFM) N\'{e}el state. Based on the calculated energy values, Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to determine the N\'{e}el temperature $(T_N)$. Our simulations yield a N\'{e}el temperature of \SI{390}{\kelvin} for the EuCl$_3$ monolayer, indicating the temperature at which the transition from a paramagnetic phase to an antiferromagnetic phase occurs. These results highlight the importance of incorporating the SOC and the Hubbard effect in accurately describing the electronic and magnetic properties of the EuCl$_3$ monolayer. Our results contribute to a deeper understanding of the fundamental physics underlying the behavior of this intriguing two-dimensional material and provide insights into its potential applications in spintronics and magnetic devices.

Graphyne (GY) and graphdiyne (GDY)-based materials represent an intriguing class of two-dimensional (2D) carbon-rich networks with tunable structures and properties surpassing those of graphene. However, the challenge of fabricating atomically well-defined crystalline GY/GDY-based systems largely hinders detailed electronic structure characterizations. Here, we report the emergence of an unconventional band structure in mesoscopically regular (~1 {\mu}m) metallated GDY sheets featuring a honeycomb lattice on Ag(111) substrates. Employing complementary scanning tunnelling and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopies, electronic band formation with a gap of 2.5 eV is rigorously determined in agreement with real-space electronic characteristics. Extensive density functional theory calculations corroborate our observations as well as recent theoretical predictions that doubly degenerate frontier molecular orbitals on a honeycomb lattice give rise to flat, Dirac and Kagome bands close to Fermi level. These results illustrate the tremendous potential of engineering novel band structures via molecular orbital and lattice symmetries in atomically precise 2D carbon scaffolds.

Neuroinflammation is a significant aspect of many neurological diseases of Homo sapiens, and the genes that are differentially expressed in this process should be well understood to gather the nature of such diseases. We have conducted a meta-analysis (based on a combined adjusted P value and logFC scheme) of 6 multi-species (Homo sapiens, Mus musculus) datasets (available on GEO, short for Gene Expression Omnibus) obtained through microarray technology. Theoretical and experimental studies present that metal halogens in MX$_3$ forms can show very interesting electronic and magnetic properties in their bulk and monolayer phases. Many MX$_3$ materials have layered structures in their bulk phases, while RuBr$_3$ and RuI$_3$ have one-dimensional chains in plane. In this paper, we show that these metal halogens can also form two-dimensional layered structures in the bulk phase similar to other metal halogens, and cleavage energy values confirm that the monolayers of RuX$_3$ can be possible to be synthesised. We also find that monolayers of RuX$_3$ prefer ferromagnetic spin orientation in the plane for Ru atoms. Their ferromagnetic ground state, however, changes to antiferromagnetic zigzag state after U is included. Calculations using PBE+U with SOC predict indirect band gap of 0.70 eV and 0.32 eV for the optimized structure of RuBr$_3$ and RuI$_3$, respectively. Calculation based on the Monte Carlo simulations reveal interesting magnetic properties of RuBr$_3$, such as large Curie temperature against RuI$_3$, both in bulk and monolayer cases. Moreover, as a result of varying exchange couplings between neighboring magnetic moments, magnetic properties of RuBr$_3$ and RuI$_3$ can undergo drastic changes from bulk to monolayer. Characterising brain activity at rest is of paramount importance to our understanding both of general principles of brain functioning and of the way brain dynamics is affected in the presence of neurological or psychiatric pathologies. We measured the time-reversal symmetry of spontaneous electroencephalographic brain activity recorded from three groups of patients and their respective control group under two experimental conditions (eyes open and closed). We evaluated differences in time irreversibility in terms of possible underlying physical generating mechanisms. The results showed that resting brain activity is generically time-irreversible at sufficiently long time scales, and that brain pathology is generally associated with a reduction in time-asymmetry, albeit with pathology-specific patterns. The significance of these results and their possible dynamical aetiology are discussed. We provide analytical results for a static portfolio optimization problem with two coherent risk measures. The use of two risk measures is motivated by joint decision-making for portfolio selection where the risk perception of the portfolio manager is of primary concern, hence, it appears in the objective function, and the risk perception of an external authority needs to be taken into account as well, which appears in the form of a risk constraint. The problem covers the risk minimization problem with an expected return constraint and the expected return maximization problem with a risk constraint, as special cases. For the general case of an arbitrary joint distribution for the asset returns, under certain conditions, we characterize the optimal portfolio as the optimal Lagrange multiplier associated to an equality-constrained dual problem. Then, we consider the special case of Gaussian returns for which it is possible to identify all cases where an optimal solution exists and to give an explicit formula for the optimal portfolio whenever it exists., Comment: 29 pages

In this paper, we report first principles calculations based on density functional theory to reveal the effects of selected adatoms (Li, Na, K, Be, Mg, Ca, B, C, N, O, Al, Si, P, Ga, Ge, As, Se and S) adsorption on GaX ( where X=S, Se) monolayers. It is found that all adatoms adsorbed on GaX monolayers can form strong chemisorption bonds except for Mg atom due to weak bonding nature of Mg atom with early 3d transition metals. Most of the adatoms of the same group elements of the periodic table are bound to GaX substrates at the same adsorption sites. All adatoms stayed above the upper layer of GaX sheets except for Be adatom on GaSe substrate and overall hexagonal geometry has been retained. The electronic structures are modified by locally through the supercell calculations. Specific adatoms, such as C, Si, Ge, N, P and As give rise to spin polarization and attain integer magnetic moments and hence can contribute half metallic character to the system. Our results can serve as a basis for future experimental and theoretical studies of adsorption on GaX.

Recent experiments revealed that monolayer $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ can be obtain by chemical exfoliation method and exfoliation or restacking of nanosheets can manipulate the magnetic properties of the materials. In this present paper, the electronic and magnetic properties of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ monolayer are investigated by combining first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. From first-principles calculations, we found that the spin configuration FM corresponds to the ground state for $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, however, the other excited zigzag oriented spin configuration has energy of 5 meV/atom higher than the ground state. Energy band gap has been obtained as $3$ meV using PBE functionals. When spin-orbit coupling effect is taken into account, corresponding energy gap is determined to be as $57$ meV. We also investigate the effect of Hubbard U energy terms on the electronic band structure of $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ monolayer and revealed band gap increases approximately linear with increasing U value. Moreover, spin-spin coupling terms ($J_1$, $J_2$, $J_3$) have been obtained using first principles calculations. By benefiting from these terms, Monte Carlo simulations with single site update Metropolis algorithm have been implemented to elucidate magnetic properties of the considered system. Thermal variations of magnetization, susceptibility and also specific heat curves indicate that monolayer $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ exhibits a phase transition between ordered and disordered phases at the Curie temperature $14.21$ K. We believe that this study can be utilized to improve two-dimensional magnet materials.
