Purpose: To investigate the epiretinal membrane (ERM) frequency in patients with glaucomatous optic atrophy (GOA). Materials and Methods: Medical records of patients with GOA were investigated. The macular ERM was assessed using high definition images obtained from enhanced depth optical coherence tomography (OCT) and evaluated according to Hwang's classification. Outer macular thickness, inward projection of outer layers and cystic changes were assessed. Age, gender, and findings of OCT were assessed and logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate possible factors which can cause ERM. Comparison between eyes with and without ERM in terms of OCT findings was also investigated. Results: Eighty-eight eyes of 68 patients were included in the sample. The mean age for patients was 70.13±9.43 years. Types of glaucoma were primary open angle glaucoma in 61 eyes, primary closed angle glaucoma in 7 eyes and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma in 20 eyes. The history of ocular surgery was present in 55 eyes. Out of 88 eyes, 45 (51.1%) was diagnosed as ERM, and 15 eyes (17.04%) were type 1A, 17 eyes (19.31%) type 1B, 8 eyes (9.09%) type 1C and 5 eyes (5.68%) type 2B according to Hwang's classification. Age and presence of previous surgeries were not found as statistically significant (p:0.054, p:0.277, respectively). Vertical cup to disc ratio (c/d) was larger in eyes with ERM (p:0.049). Conclusion: The frequency of ERM in patients with GOA was found to be 51.1 % and vertical c/d ratio was higher in these patients. Purpose: To find out the effect of half-moon supracapsular nucleofractis technique on central corneal epithelial thickness (CET) measured by spectral domain anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).Materials and methods: Patients who underwent uneventful cataract surgery by the same surgeon with the same technique were recruited in this study. The effective phaco time (EPT) was recorded in each surgery. Central CET was measured by AS-OCT 1 day before and 1, 3, 7 days after surgery. CET was measured without precorneal tear film layer, and non-epithelial central corneal thickness was also calculated manually. Preoperative and postoperative values were compared by statistical analysis.Results: Thirty-one eyes of 31 patients were included in this study. The mean age of patients was 65.03 ± 11.47 years. On the first day of surgery, increase in mean CET was statistically significant, but on the 3rd and 7th day after surgery, this increase was declined (p = 0.001, p = 0.367, p = 1, respectively). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between mean EPT and mean CET on the first postoperative day (p = 0.013, r = 0.470). On the 3rd and 7th day, this correlation was not statistically significant (p = 0.055, p = 0.454, respectively).Conclusion: Mean central CET was statistically thicker and positive correlated with EPT on the first postoperative day. Purpose: To report toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS) after cataract surgery possibly associated with intracameral use of cefuroxime. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review and analysis on the pre- and postoperative conditions of the subjects who had developed TASS. Results: The patient group consisted of 17 patients. Tyndallization and fibrin fibers were positive in all eyes. In four eyes, hypopyon formation developed. These reactions diminished on the third day and fully resolved 1 week after the operations with the use of intensive topical steroid and mydriatic therapy. To determine the etiology of TASS, infusion fluid, viscoelastics, and intracameral antibiotic agent were changed respectively. After changing intracameral antibiotic agent from cefuroxime axetile to moxifloxacin no new cases of TASS were diagnosed. Conclusion: All agents injected into the anterior chamber can cause TASS. Ophthalmologists and operating room staff need to pay careful attention to all drugs and irrigating solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To evaluate anterior segment parameters measured by dual Scheimpflug corneal topography in pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG), primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), and healthy eyes. Materials and Methods: One hundred forty-three eyes of 86 patients were included in this study. Forty-seven eyes of 38 patients with PEXG, 30 eyes of 15 patients with PACG, and 66 eyes of 33 healthy subjects were evaluated. Patients who underwent previous ophthalmic surgery and contact lens wearers were excluded. After full ophthalmological examination, mean central corneal thickness (CCT), white-to-white horizontal corneal diameter (WTW), pupillary diameter (PD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and mean anterior chamber angle were measured by dual Scheimpflug corneal topography and compared between the three groups. Statistical analyses were done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences for Windows 18.0 program. Results: No statistical difference was found in mean age or gender among the study groups (p>0.05). There were also no statistical differences in CCT, WTW, or PD among the groups (p=0.568, p=0.064, p=0.321, respectively). ACV, ACD, and mean anterior chamber angle values were significantly lower in the PACG group compared to the other groups (p=0.000 for all). There was no statistically significant difference in these measurements between the PEXG and normal eyes. Conclusion: ACV and depth and mean anterior chamber angle were statistically different (lower) in PACG when compared with PEXG and healthy eyes. Purpose: To evaluate peripapillary nerve fiber layer (RNLF) by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) patients. Materials and Methods: Thirty-nine eyes of 39 patients with RP, who admitted to eye clinic between January 2007- January 2008, are included. Best corrected visual acuity and intraocular pressure measurement, biomicroscopic anterior segment and fundus examinations are done to all patients. In addition to the mean RNFL thickness, also RNLF thicknesses in superior, nasal, inferior and temporal quadrants were measured with OCT3 (Zeiss) which was performed by fast RNLF program, circumpapillary in a 3.4 mm diameter. The association of RNFL with sex, age, and visual acuity was evaluated. Results: The mean age of 21 male (54%) and 18 female (46%) patient was 35.5±12.0 (18-67) year. The mean visual acuity was 0.59±0.51 (0.05-2.10) according to the logMAR units. The intraocular pressure values of all cases were below 21 mmHg. While the mean RNFL thickness of 39 eyes was 87.1±31.7 μm; this mean value was 86.5±37.2 μm in males and 87.8±25.0 μm in females. The superior was detected as the thinnest quadrant and the temporal the thickest quadrant. There was no statistical association between RNLF thickness and sex, age, and visual acuity (p>0.05). Conclusion: The damage in ganglion cells and the photoreceptors can be determined by the examination of the RNFL in RP with OCT. Purpose: To evaluate macula by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in retinitis pigmentosa patients. Materials and Methods: Central foveal thickness (CFT) was measured by OCT3 with 6 mm horizontal scans passing through fovea. The configuration of the inner segment/ outer segment junction (IS/OS band) in the grey scale OCT images at the fovea was graded between 1 and 3. According to this IS/OS band was not visible in Grade 1, abnormal IS/OS band under fovea in Grade 2, and normal IS/OS band in Grade 3. The correlation of the grade of IS/OS band with age, sex, visual acuity and CFT was evaluated. Results: IS/OS band was in Grade 1 in 19 eyes (40%), in Grade 2 in 13 eyes (28%), and in Grade 3 in 15 eyes (32%). The difference between the grade of IS/OS band and sex and age of patients was statistically insignificant (p>0.05). The visual acuity of eyes in Grade 3 was higher than eyes in Grade1 and 2 (p<0.05). The CFT of eyes in Grade 3 was higher than eyes in Grade1 (p<0.05). Conclusion: The integrity of IS/OS band may be a sign of the preserved foveal functions; and may be an indicator of potential visual functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amaç: Katarakt cerrahisi sonrası retina dekolmanı gelişen olguların klinik ózeliklerinin ve cerrahi sonuçlarının değerlendirilmesi Gereç ve Yóntem: 1995-2005 yılları arasında afak ya da psódofak retina dekolmanı nedeniyle opere edilen 203 olgunun 207 gózü çalışma kapsamına alındı. Olgular uygulanan cerrahi teknik, anatomik ve górsel başarı oranları yónünden retrospektif olarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Gózlerin 90'ı afak, 117'si psódofak idi. Katarakt cerrahisi ile retina dekolmanı arasında geçen süre ortalama 40.14±59.72 ay idi. 141 gózde (%68.1) yırtık saptanırken, 66 gózde (%31.9) yırtık bulunmadı. 171 gózde (%82.6) konvansiyonel dekolman cerrahisi, 22 gózde (%10.6) primer pars plana vitrektomi (PPV), 8 gózde (%3.9) primer PPV + çevresel çókertme ve 6 gózde (%2.9) pnómotik retinopeksi uygulandı. Tek cerrahi ile anatomik başarı oranları sırasıyla %72.5, %68.2, %87.5 ve %50 idi. Son kontrolde ise gózlerin %93.7'sinde anatomik başarı elde edildi. Preoperatif 2.49±0.79 olan górme keskinliği (logMAR cinsinden ortalama) postoperatif 1.27±0.75'e yükseldi. Son kontrolde górme keskinliği konvansiyonel dekolman cerrahisi geçiren grupta 1.2±0.74, primer PPV grubunda 2.08±0.96, PPV + çevresel çókertme grubunda 1.8±0.6 ve pnómotik retinopeksi grubunda 0.6±0.58 idi. Sonuç: Katarakt cerrahisi sonrası retina dekolmanlarının tedavisinde gerek konvansiyonel dekolman cerrahisi, gerekse vitreoretinal cerrahi ile tatminkar anatomik ve górsel sonuçlar elde etmek mümkündür.
