Background: Studies that were carried out previously on learning outcomes focused mainly on the student's cognitive domain while identifying factors that predicted it. More so, most of the learner's assessments in school are largely dependent on the score obtained from specific subjects by the learner, and efforts to address other domains of instruction such as affective and psychomotor domains have been minimal or absent in regard to the variables selected for the study. This study therefore sought to address that gap by finding out the relative and composite contribution of academic optimism and capital indicators to the learning outcomes (of students., Methods: The study adopted a correlational design with a multistage sampling technique to select a total of 534 senior secondary class II students. Two research instruments, the Academic Optimism and Capital Indicators Scale (AOCIS) and the Learning Outcomes Scale (LOS), were used for data collection. Exploratory and confirmatory factors analysis were used to assess the dimensionality of the items and factor structure of the scales. The psychometric properties obtained for scale were adequate for the instrument to be adjudged valid and reliable.The collected data were analysed using the hierarchical regression approach (HRA)., Results: The findings of the study revealed that academic emphasis, collective efficacy, faculty trust, social capital, economic capital, and cultural capital, relatively and jointly, predict overall learning outcomes (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor construct). The result showed that there was an increased proportion of variance with each addition of a predictor to the model. Social capital reduced the percentage change at the initial time, but with the addition of economic capital, the proportion of change increased among others in the subsequent model examination., Conclusion: /implication: The study provides knowledge and empirical evidence that academic optimism and capital indicators, with their dimensions, affect composite learning outcomes among students. This study will help school ministries, policymakers, and curriculum planners make sure that the educational objectives, philosophies, and programmes are planned to reflect the total learner in order to produce the total learner that will effect changes in the society. This study has provided evidence that academic inputs and capital indicators are crucial indices of their learning outcomes in the three area of learning. The ability of the school to emphasise academics, ensure that all school agents are committed to instructional delivery, and gain the trust of parents is crucial for adequate support to enhance students learning outcomes. Objective: To study the epidemiological profile of urologic cancers in the department of urology at the teaching hospital of Cotonou., Methodology: We analysed the course of all urological cancer data over a 42-month period, from January the 1st 2008 to 30th June 2011., Results: Urologic cancers were frequent in our hospital practice with a frequency of 17.38%. They are dominated by prostatic cancer (69%), the cancer of bladder (28.5%), the cancer of the kidney (8.5%) and cancers of the external genitals (testis and scrotum) which are marginal in our review. We did not report any case of penis cancer and urethral cancer. They occured at an advanced age with an average age 62.89±15.51 years. Urologic cancers were the prerogative of the subjects of male sex with a sex ratio of 9/10. Specific mortality rate which is attached to them was high., Conclusion: The epidemiologic profile of urologic cancers in our practice had some essential characteristic for the primary prevention. The improvement of the quality of data, the installation of a cancer register and the improvement of the technical skills will allowed a better approach of urologic cancer in our urology unit., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Masson SAS. Aim: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the use and appropriateness of preventive measures for venous thrombosis among adult inpatients in a Benin teaching hospital., Patients and Methods: All patients were systematically enrolled. The risk of venous thrombosis was estimated according to international guidelines. Thromboembolic events were diagnosed using the Wells score and, when possible, by paraclinical investigations. The following variables were studied: the risk of venous thrombosis, the use and appropriateness of preventive measures, and the frequency of thromboembolic events. The data were analyzed with Epiinfo 6.04.fr and SPSS software, and significance was assumed at p=0.05., Results: The study population consisted of 487 patients recruited in four surgical wards, four general wards and one obstetric-gynecology ward. Mean age was 38.7+/-11.3 years and the sex ratio 0.51. The risk of thrombosis was considered low in 15% of patients, moderate in 60.8%, high in 21.1% and very high in 3.1%. Prophylactic measures were prescribed to 33.9% of the patients overall, 53.6% in the obstetric gynecology ward, 28.5% in the surgical wards and 12.9% in the general wards. The frequency of preventive measures rose with the level of risk (p<0.0001). Preventive measures consisted of passive mobilization, aspirin, enoxaparin and acenocoumarol. The prescriptions were appropriate in only 6% of cases. Among 198 patients who were monitored for two months after hospital discharge, 8% had a venous thromboembolic event. Such events were more frequent in the absence of prophylaxis (12% vs 3.3%, p=0.02)., Conclusion: The risk of venous thromboembolic is recognized but poorly managed in this Bénin teaching hospital.

Based on the principle of supramolecular preorganization, three different types of new oligofunctional surfactants have been designed and prepared differing in both the degree of conformational flexibility and the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance of their structures due to the chosen building blocks including rather rigid and shape-persistent backbones or a dendritic subunit. Surface-active properties of the oligofunctional surfactants involving critical micellization concentration, surface tension at cmc, effectiveness of surface tension reduction, and the efficiency of adsorption were determined by use of the surface tension isotherms, respectively. In particular the amino-acid-based amphiphiles show remarkable surface-active properties with the adsorption at the air/water interface and also the aggregation to micelles starting at very low concentration. By analysis of the surface pressure-surface area isotherms interesting information on the packing behavior and orientation of the amphiphilic molecules in relation to the molecular structure could be obtained. Moreover, limiting area and collapse pressure of the Langmuir-films were determined. Morphological observation of the dynamic process of monolayer compression at the air/water interface was carried out by Brewster angle microscopy illustrating several phase states visualized as snap shots. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the new surfactants acting as collecting agents in the process of flotation using the model mineral fluorite was studied. A surprisingly high recovery of the mineral was obtained for the surfactants with constricted flexibility. The flotation plots clearly manifest that bundling of surfactant subunits by tethering to an aromatic core or by dendritic branching is profitable, indicating that effects of preorganization of the oligofunctional surfactant molecules are important.

Objective: To analyse the clinical and radiological features of cases of vesicouterine fistula (VUF) seen in the department and the results of treatment in order to improve the therapeutic management of patients with VUF., Material and Methods: The medical records of 17 woman admitted to the department and treated for vesicouterine fistula between 01/01/1994 and 15/06/2001 were reviewed. Two were excluded from this essentially retrospective study, as they were considered to be uninterpretable due to missing data. Predefined forms comprising the parameters indicated in the text constituted the basis of this study., Results: The authors indicate that VUF is a rare disease: 17 cases in 7 and a half years. Detailed review of 15 cases showed that the constant presenting complaint is permanent urine leak from the cervix. It was isolated in 12 cases and associated with "vesical menstrual periods" in 3 cases. Women between the ages of 30 and 39 years were the most frequently affected. Pauciparous women were more frequently affected (7 out of 15 cases). Caesarean section was incriminated in 14 out of 15 cases. 11 out of 15 subjects consulted after at least one year of symptoms. The margins of the fistula were fibrotic in 11 cases, which did not prevent satisfactory results, with 14 cures out of 15 cases after the first surgical operation., Conclusion: VUF is an uncommon and very frequently iatrogenic disease, in which the presenting complaint is permanent urine leak from the genital tract, either isolated or associated with cyclic haematuria. Even when patients are seen late, with fibrotic margins, surgical treatment of VUF achieves a good cure rate. The best treatment is prevention, based on a perfect caesarean section technique.

A 10-year-old black child presented with bloody urine and urine retention due to a bladder tumor. Cystoprostetatectomy led to the diagnosis of embryonal botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma. At gross examination, tumor presented a grape-shaped form. Microscopically, the specimen presented undifferentiated cells in a myxoid stroma and subepithelial cambium. The tumor was desmin and MyoD positive. The child died before chemotherapy could be completed.

The authors analyse the epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of peno-perineo-scrotal gangrene in the urology department of a university hospital of a developing African country. The frequency of this disease is low, four cases per year, and most patients (about 72%) are between the ages of 40 to 70 years. The authors identified urethral stricture (31.25%) and idiopathic causes as the main predisposing factors, and many pathogenic bacteria, including P. mirabilis, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, K. pneumoniae etc., as decisive factors. The treatment of peno-perineo-scrotal gangrene must be both medical and surgical. In addition to the medical treatment currently performed in the department, the authors would like to combine hyperbaric oxygen therapy and, as in Japan, the use of argatroban to accelerate wound healing.

Over a 6-year period in the surgical departments of Cotonou hospital, urethral diseases in children represented 20% of all infantile urological diseases and essentially consisted of urethral strictures (26 cases), hypospadias (22 cases), posterior urethral valves (12 cases), prolapsed urethral mucosa, the only disease observed in girls (9 cases). These diseases generally do not raise any diagnostic problems, but the real problem concerns follow-up of these children, who are usually lost to follow-up after discharge.

About two cases of Buschke-Loewenstein tumor--one of the penis in man infected with HIV and another of perianal area-, the authors insist on the relative frequency of Buschke-Loewenstein tumor in non-circumcised and homosexual groups. They emphasize the continuous precancerous spectrum of Buschke-Loewenstein tumor.
