This two-year quantitative study analyzes students' experiences during migration experiential learning study-abroad programs in 2017 and 2018 in Munich, Germany. U.S. students worked with German refugee organizations to gain a more comprehensive understanding about the political, social, and cultural complexity of Europe's current migration debate. Grounded-theory-based, this study's inferences expand on Dan Butin's innovative 2015 practice-to-theory critical service-learning approach toward multi- and transcultural adaptability, balanced reciprocity, and social justice.

The present article analyzes the service-learning experiences of US students during a short-term study-abroad trip to Germany in July 2017. The study identified a key, overarching challenge: the gap between students' expectations and the actual study-abroad outcome. The overall service-learning study-abroad experience was deemed very positive for the students. Almost all students reported to have gained a significantly increased knowledge about Europe's Migration 'Crisis' and a significantly increased understanding about integration processes in Germany. However, the analysis also pointed to a gap between students' expectations and actual outcomes. The article suggests recommendations how this gap could be narrowed, if not overcome for future experiential/service-learning courses. The recommendations provide an innovative model for future short-term experiential/service-learning pedagogy.

Background: One Health refers to the dynamic interdependence of human, animal and environmental health and provides a unique lens through which to examine health problems. Purpose: The purposes of this manuscript were: (1) to contextualize One Health in public health and health education; (2) provide examples of a One Health approach to communicable and chronic disease; and (3) explain how One Health interfaces with the NCHEC Areas of Responsibility. Model: One Health involves combining human, animal and environmental components to address global health challenges that have an ecological interconnectedness and plays a role in promoting public health and health education. While One Health has technically been practiced by some public health, veterinary and medical professionals for many years, it is now becoming more recognized and institutionalized. Both public health and health education programs are in ideal position to integrate a One Health approach into their educational programs. Discussion: One Health can be integrated into public health and health education professional preparation courses including practicum and capstone courses. This article both provides a background to contextualize One Health as it relates to public health and health education and presents two examples, one from a Master of Public Health (MPH) program and one from a Global Health Certificate program from Virginia and how One Health interfaces with the NCHEC Areas of Responsibility.

The impact of dust storms on human health has been well described in Asian and European countries. Several research studies have examined adverse health outcomes attributable to dust and dust storm events, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, across these and other developed countries. Despite an increasing number of dust storm events plaguing the Middle East attributable to climate change, little is presently understood about the effects of dust storms on the health of human populations residing in this region. This review sought to identify and assess what is currently understood about the health impacts of dust storms in the Middle East. A systematic review was designed and conducted using MEDLINE/PubMed and Google Scholar. Out of 534 articles identified, 16 met predetermined eligibility criteria and were included in our analysis. We pursued an understanding of 21 site supervisors' perspectives on the focus of counseling supervision in integrated behavioral health settings. Presenting organizational and clinical viewpoints, site supervisors reported mentoring supervisees on administrative and interdisciplinary work along with process‐oriented supervision practices. Hispanics/Latinos, particularly those that identify as foreign-born, are overrepresented in the agricultural sector in the U.S. Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, this subpopulation of farmworkers was recognized as an invaluable group of essential workers unable to implement COVID-19 protections. Previously validated COVID-19 stress scale measures were identified, adapted, and translated to collect COVID-19 stress data from Hispanic/Latino agricultural workers in two heavily agricultural counties in northeastern North Carolina. Participants were recruited using purposive convenience sampling. Data collection took place from June to November of 2021. The majority of Hispanic/Latino agricultural workers surveyed reported experiencing worries about catching COVID-19 (92.00%) and being infected with the virus (95.95%). A small proportion of the surveyed population indicated experiencing COVID-19 traumatic stress. More than half of participants were concerned about the impacts COVID-19 would have on their ability to see (53.42%) and provide for their families (58.33%). Farmworkers bore relatively heavy stress burdens associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Because this group is a vulnerable population at risk for adverse health outcomes, reports numerous barriers to healthcare access, and faces health and safety challenges related to acculturative stress, understanding their experiences with COVID-19 is essential for the development of protective and preventative efforts to improve outcomes among Hispanic/Latino farmworkers. Background: Healthcare professionals' knowledge of safe use of opioids for chronic pain management is critical in preventing opioid abuse and overdose. Undergraduate curricula of health professional schools, including undergraduate nursing programs, need to improve and adopt a comprehensive educational plan regarding this issue. Method: This study implemented and assessed an educational module on undergraduate nursing students' knowledge and attitudes regarding prescription opioids. Results: The educational module improved nursing students' knowledge and attitudes. Students reflected positively on the module. Conclusion: Undergraduate nursing students benefited from the educational module on prescription opioids and preferred to include a similar module in their undergraduate curricula. Background: Breastfeeding is proposed to play a role in reducing the risk of obesity throughout life. Kuwait has an extremely high prevalence of childhood obesity (45% of adolescents are overweight/obese) and extremely low breastfeeding indicators, particularly exclusive breastfeeding. In fact, little is known about the association between breastfeeding and obesity from Kuwait and the broader Middle East. Aims: To estimate the prevalence of overweight/obesity in female adolescents in Kuwait and assess its association with breastfeeding during infancy. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study that included 775 girls randomly selected from public and private high schools in Kuwait. The primary exposure was breastfeeding in the first four months of life, and the outcome was overweight/obesity during adolescence. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between breastfeeding and overweight/obesity while adjusting for potential confounders. Results: Approximately 45% of adolescent girls were either overweight/obese. We found no significant association between breastfeeding (exclusive/mixed breastfeeding and formula feeding/no breastfeeding) and overweight/obesity neither in univariable analysis (Crude Prevalence Ratio: 1.14, 95%CI [0.92–1.36] & Crude Prevalence Ratio: 1.29, 95%CI [0.86–1.68]; p = 0.293) for mixed feeding and no breastfeeding respectively, nor in multivariable analysis (Adjusted Prevalence Ratio: 1.14, 95%CI [0.85–1.42] & Adjusted Prevalence Ratio: 1.20, 95%CI [0.68–1.68]; p = 0.589) for mixed feeding and no breastfeeding respectively. Conclusion: Breastfeeding during infancy was not significantly associated with overweight/obesity during adolescence. However, breastfeeding should be encouraged for its indisputable benefits for infants and their mothers alike. Further prospective studies are needed to assess the association. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
