Abstract Carbonaceous adsorbents were synthesized from palm kernel shell and palm mesocarp fiber for the adsorption of phenanthrene (PHE) and the highly carcinogenic-benzo(a)pyrene (BaP). The structure and properties of the activated biochar were characterized using standardized analytical tools. The microscopic examinations carried out with SEM and BET results revealed mesoporous structures and interstitial spaces in the activated samples (AB-PKS and AB-PMS). Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) results showed that prepared sorbents are amorphous and that activation affected the amorphous cellulose on the surface of the microfibrils which led to a decrease in the intensity of some peaks. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) affirms the availability of surface moieties that may promote polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) removal or decontamination of aqueous media. The sorption isotherm and effect of pH on the adsorption of PHE and BaP onto the activated palm kernel shell (AB-PKS) and activated palm mesocarp fiber (AB-PMF) were investigated. The isotherm studies and error analysis (SSE and R 2 ) confirm that the Freundlich model best fits experimental results for AB-PMF; while, the Langmuir model best describes AB-PKS sorption of BaP and PHE, respectively. The optimal removal efficiency for PHE was between 84 and 100% while that of BaP was between 68 and 87% with maximum adsorption capacity (q max) of 19.38–21.98 mg/g and 1.24–13.26 mg/g, respectively. The optimum pH condition for removing PHE is less than 7 and above 7 for BaP. Therefore, the conversion of waste materials to useful sorbents, as well as preliminary adsorption test results obtained suggests a cleaner and cost-effective pathway for waste management and water treatment.

Three new wood-inhabiting fungal species, Cerioporus yunnanensis, Perenniporiopsis sinensis, and Sarcoporia yunnanensis, are proposed based on a combination of the morphological features and molecular evidence. Cerioporus yunnanensis is characterized by the pileate basidiomata having a fawn brown to black pileal surface, a dimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, and the presence of the fusoid cystidioles and cylindrical basidiospores (9–12.5 × 3.5–5 µm). Perenniporiopsis sinensis is distinct from the osseous pileus with verrucose, an orange-yellow to dark reddish-brown pileal surface with a cream margin, a trimitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, and the presence of the fusiform cystidioles and ellipsoid basidiospores (9–11 × 5.5–6.5 µm). Sarcoporia yunnanensis is typical of the pileate basidiomata with a salmon to reddish-brown pileal surface, a monomitic hyphal system with clamped generative hyphae, and the presence of the ellipsoid basidiospores (4–5.5 × 2.5–4 µm). Sequences of ITS + nLSU + mt-SSU + TEF1 + RPB1 + RPB2 genes were used for the phylogenetic analyses using maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony, and Bayesian inference methods. The multiple genes with six loci analysis showed that the three new species nested within the order Polyporales, in which C. yunnanensis and P. sinensis nested into the family Polyporaceae, and S. yunnanensis grouped into the family Sarcoporiaceae.

Financial institutions in the form of banks provide facilities in the form of credit cards, but with the development of technology, fraud on credit card transactions is still common, so a system is needed that can detect fraud transactions quickly and accurately. Therefore, this study aims to classify fraudulent transactions. The proposed method is Ensemble Learning which will be tested using the Boosting type with 3 variations, namely XGBoost, Gradient Boosting, and AdaBoost. Then, to maximize the performance of the model, the dataset used is optimized with the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) function from the Imblearn library in the data train to handle imbalanced dataset conditions. The dataset used in this study is entitled "Credit Card Fraud Detection" with a total of 284807 data which is divided into two classes: Not Fraud and Fraud. The proposed model received a recall of 92% with Gradient Boosting, where the results increased by 10.37% compared to the previous study using Random Forest with a recall result of 81.63%. This is because the use of SMOTE in the data train greatly influences the classification of Not fraud and fraud classes.

Water-soluble graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have recently exhibited considerable potential for diverse biomedical applications owing to their exceptional optical and chemical properties. However, the pronounced heterogeneity in the composition, size, and morphology of GQDs poses challenges for a comprehensive understanding of the intricate correlation between their structural attributes and functional properties. This variability also introduces complexities in scaling the production processes and addressing safety considerations. Light and sound have firmly established their role in clinical applications as pivotal energy sources for minimally invasive therapeutic interventions. Given the limited penetration depth of light, photodynamic therapy (PDT) predominantly targets superficial conditions such as dermatological disorders, head and neck malignancies, ocular ailments, and early-stage esophageal cancer. Conversely, ultrasound-based sonodynamic therapy (SDT) capitalizes on its superior ability to propagate and focus ultrasound within biological tissues, enabling a diverse range of therapeutic applications, including the management of gliomas, breast cancer, hematological tumors, and modulation of the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Considering the advancements in theranostic and precision therapies, reevaluating these conventional energy sources and their associated sensitizers is imperative. This review introduces three prevalent treatment modalities that harness light and sound stimuli: PDT, SDT, and a synergistic approach that integrates PDT and SDT. This study delineated the therapeutic dynamics and contemporary designs of sensitizers tailored to these modalities. By exploring the historical context of the field and elucidating the latest design strategies, this review underscores the pivotal role of GQDs in propelling the evolution of PDT and SDT. Graphene quantum dot (GQD) integration into hydrogel matrices has become a viable approach for improving drug delivery and bioimaging in cancer treatment in recent years. Due to their distinct physicochemical characteristics, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted interest as adaptable nanomaterials for use in biomedicine. When incorporated into hydrogel frameworks, these nanomaterials exhibit enhanced stability, biocompatibility, and responsiveness to external stimuli. The synergistic pairing of hydrogels with GQDs has created new opportunities to tackle the problems related to drug delivery and bioimaging in cancer treatment. Bioimaging plays a pivotal role in the early detection and monitoring of cancer. GQD-based hydrogels, with their excellent photoluminescence properties, offer a superior platform for high-resolution imaging. The tunable fluorescence characteristics of GQDs enable real-time visualization of biological processes, facilitating the precise diagnosis and monitoring of cancer progression. Moreover, the drug delivery landscape has been significantly transformed by GQD-based hydrogels. Because hydrogels are porous, therapeutic compounds may be placed into them and released in a controlled environment. The large surface area and distinct interactions of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with medicinal molecules boost loading capacity and release dynamics, ultimately improving therapeutic efficacy. Moreover, GQDbased hydrogels' stimulus-responsiveness allows for on-demand medication release, which minimizes adverse effects and improves therapeutic outcomes. The ability of GQD-based hydrogels to specifically target certain cancer cells makes them notable. Functionalizing GQDs with targeting ligands minimizes offtarget effects and delivers therapeutic payloads to cancer cells selectively. Combined with imaging capabilities, this tailored drug delivery creates a theranostic platform for customized cancer treatment. In this study, the most recent advancements in the synergistic use of GQD-based hydrogels are reviewed, with particular attention to the potential revolution these materials might bring to the area of cancer theranostics. Hollow microgels and their hybrids have gained much attention in modern-day research because of their fascinating properties and potential applications. This article gives classification, preparation methods, properties and applications of hollow microgels and their hybrids in modern research. Some of the hollow microgels and their hybrids respond to change in specific environmental stimuli like pH, ionic strength and temperature of the medium. They are called smart polymer hollow microgels and smart hybrid microgels, respectively. This peculiar behaviour makes them a suitable candidate for their use in drug delivery, sensing, catalysis and many other fields.
