The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of melatonin and vitamin C on expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in heart tissue of chronic alcoholic rats. Twenty-four adult male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 g were used in this study. Rats were divided into four groups. The first group served as control (n = 6). The second group was treated with ethanol (%7.2) for 28 days (n = 6), which was administered in artificial isocaloric diets. The third group was given ethanol and supplemented with 40 mg/kg vitamin C [intraperitoneally (i.p.)] (n = 6). The fourth group was given ethanol and supplemented with 4 mg/kg melatonin (i.p.) (n = 6). At the end of the experiment, rats were sacrificed and heart tissues were processed for immunohistochemistry analysis to endothelial NOS (eNOS). eNOS immunoreactivity showed heterogeneous distribution in control group. eNOS immunoreactivity was (+) in some myocytes and (++) in some others. Expression of eNOS in alcohol group was heterogeneous like control group but also stronger than that. Immunoreactivity was (+++) in myocytes near the epicardial zone and (++) in myocytes near the endocardium border. In melatonin and vitamin C-treated groups, eNOS immunoreactivity was diffuse and the intensity of reaction was (+++) in subepicardial region. However, eNOS immunoreactivity scores were weaker in these groups when compared with the alcohol group. Our results indicate that alleviation of oxidative stress by antioxidant therapy reduces reactive oxygen speciesmediated nitric oxide inactivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to clarify the factors associated with domestic violence against married women and to learn the attitude of women toward violence and toward the inquiry of health personnel about domestic violence, a cross-sectional survey was conducted on 116 married Turkish women. The prevalence of domestic physical violence was found to be 41.4%, emotional violence 25.9%, sexual violence 8.6%, and controlling behavior 77.6%. Physical violence experienced at any time in their life was 50.9%. Rate of physical violence was found related with lower formal education of both women and husbands and their place of birth. The opinion of 'husbands must not beat their wives' was more common among women with formal education. Eighty-two percent of women indicated that they would be willing to answer questions regarding domestic violence by health personnel. In conclusion, cultural background and formal education of either woman or man influence the likelihood of imposing or tolerating violent behavior at home. Purpose: In this cross-sectional survey, we assessed the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) in a representative German population sample. In addition, we examined the associations between DED, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and level of fatigue. Finally, we further validated the German version of the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) questionnaire and present norm data of the German population., Methods: A random sample of German residents aged 16 years and older was recruited between October and December 2021. All participants completed the SPEED, Short Form 36, and Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory 20 questionnaires., Results: Of the 2495 participants who completed the survey, 450 (21.6%; 95% confidence intervals 20.0-23.1) reported a SPEED total score of ≥4, indicating a positive screening for DED. DED was significantly more common in women and older age. Participants who screened positive for DED reported significantly higher levels of fatigue and lower values in all domains of HRQoL. A receiver operating characteristic curve of the SPEED was generated using an ophthalmologist's diagnosis. The area under the curve was estimated to be 0.886 (95% confidence intervals 0.858-0.913). A cutoff score ≥4 seemed to be appropriate as an indicator of DED. Cronbach's α was excellent (0.95)., Conclusions: DED is common in the German population. We confirmed associations with sex, age, HRQoL, and fatigue level, indicating a high burden of DED. Purpose: We performed biochemical and histopathological evaluations to assess the effects of 2-APB on ischemia-reperfusion induced testicular damage., Materials and Methods: A total of 28 rats were randomly divided into 4 groups, including sham treated, ischemia-reperfusion, ischemia-reperfusion plus 2 mg/kg 2-APB and ischemia-reperfusion plus 4 mg/kg 2-APB. Testicular tissue superoxide dismutase, glutathione, malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity and DNA fragmentation levels were determined. Testicular tissue samples were examined by histopathology and TUNEL staining., Results: Mean superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity and glutathione were significantly higher in the sham treated group than in the ischemia-perfusion group (p <0.05). Mean malondialdehyde and DNA fragmentation levels were significantly lower in the sham treated group than in the ischemia-reperfusion group (p <0.05). After 2-APB treatment superoxide dismutase, total antioxidant capacity and glutathione were significantly increased but malondialdehyde and DNA fragmentation levels were significantly decreased compared to the ischemia-reperfusion group (p <0.05). The number of TUNEL positive cells was significantly lower in the 2-APB treatment groups than in the ischemia-reperfusion group (p <0.05)., Conclusions: In rats 2-APB reduced the oxidative stress and apoptosis caused by testicular ischemia-reperfusion injury. Vesicouterine fistula (VUF) is a rare type of genitourinary fistula. Lower-segment cesarean section is the leading cause of VUF. Patients mostly present with the classical triad of menouria, amenorrhea, and urinary incontinence, with the history of a previous cesarean section. Conservative management with catheterization and open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgeries are the prescribed treatment options. We present the case of a 35-year-old woman who presented with cyclical menouria and urinary incontinence. After diagnosis of VUF by cystoscopy, the laparoscopic approach was chosen. During the procedure, we used anterior abdominal wall peritoneum and adjacent adipose tissue interposition for the first time, instead of omental interposition, because of the unavailability of omentum. The postoperative period was uneventful, and the procedure was successful. In conclusion, the laparoscopic approach is feasible and the anterior abdominal wall peritoneal flap can be used instead of omentum for tissue interposition when the omentum is not available.

A case of pure mutism without pseudobulbar palsy and other neurological findings resulting from simultaneous bilateral lenticulostriate artery territory infarction is presented. A 45-year-old woman suffered a transient ischemic attack with nonfluent aphasia and right hemiparesis. Six months later, she developed pure mutism without oral apraxia, pseudobulbar signs, and motor deficits. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed bilateral infarction in the lentiform nucleus regions. In the available data, there is only one report of simultaneous bilateral lenticulostriate infarction. To date, in all reported cases of mutism of subcortical vascular origin there are also various degrees of pseudobulbar signs and motor deficits and the responsible lesions are mostly consecutive. The case presented here is the first to show pure vascular mutism without other neurological findings.
