Abstract

A multi-cell He gas-scintillator active target, designed for the measurement of photoreaction cross sections, is described. The target has four main chambers, giving an overall thickness of 0.103 $\mathrm{g/cm^{2}}$ at an operating pressure of 2 MPa. Scintillations are read out by photomultiplier tubes and the addition of small amounts of $\mathrm{N}_{2}$ to the He, to shift the scintillation emission from UV to visible, is discussed. First results of measurements at the MAX IV Laboratory tagged-photon facility show that the target has good timing resolution and can cope well with a high-flux photon beam. The determination of reaction cross sections from target yields relies on a Monte Carlo simulation, which considers scintillation light transport, photodisintegration processes in $^{4}\mathrm{He}$, background photon interactions in target windows and interactions of the reaction-product particles in the gas and target container. Abstract

Effects of antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) on neutron and gamma-radiation shielding parameters of tellurite vanadio-antimonite glasses with compositions 40TeO2-(60-x)V2O5-xSb2O3: 0 ≤ xSb2O3 ≤ 10 mol% coded as (TVS0-TVS10) were investigated. The mass attenuation coefficients (MAC) were evaluated using the Monte Carlo simulation code (MCNP-5) and WinXcom program for photon energies in the range of 15 keV to 15 MeV. The SRIM program was used to compute the stopping power and projected range of the charged particles, such as proton and alpha particles, on the investigated glass samples. Based on the theoretically evaluated MAC, some shielding parameters were computed, such as linear attenuation coefficient, electric cross-section, atomic cross-section, effective atomic number, half-value thickness (HVT), and the mean free path. The EXABCal program was applied to predict the level of the photons accumulation in the investigated glass samples (buildup factors). The effective cross-section for fast neutrons was computed theoretically based on the fast neutron effective removal cross-section (ΣR ) for the constituting components. Results revealed that the maximum values of MAC exceed in the range between 28.9-31.3 cm2/g with increasing the Sb2O3 substitution ratio between 0-10 mol %, respectively. In contrast, the HVT values decrease with an increase in the increment of Sb2O3 rate. The maximum (ΣR) was obtained for glass coded TVS0 among the investigated glasses. Results concluded that the higher Sb2O3 concentration in TVS glasses leads to an increase in their capability to apply in several radiation shielding applications.

30. The influence of MgO on the radiation protection and mechanical properties of tellurite glasses

Abstract

Mechanical moduli, such as Young's modulus (E), Bulks modulus (B), Shear modulus (S), longitudinal modulus (L), Poisson's ratio (σ) and micro Hardness (H) were theoretically calculated for (100-x)TeO2+x MgO glasses, where x = 10, 20, 30, 40 and 45 mol%, based on the Makishima–Mackenzie model. The estimated results showed that the mechanical moduli and the microhardness of the glasses were improved with the increase of the MgO contents in the TM glasses, while Poisson's ratio decreased with the increase in MgO content. Moreover, the radiation shielding capacity was evaluated for the studied TM glasses. Thus, the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), transmission factor (TF) and half-value thickness (Δ0.5) were simulated for gamma photon energies between 0.344 and 1.406 MeV. The simulated results showed that glass TM10 with 10 mol % MgO possess the highest LAC and varied in the range between 0.259 and 0.711 cm−1, while TM45 glass with 45 mol % MgO possess the lowest LAC and vary in the range between 0.223 and 0.587 cm−1 at gamma photon energies between 0.344 and 1.406 MeV. Furthermore, the BXCOM program was applied to calculate the effective atomic number (Zeff), equivalent atomic number (Zeq) and buildup factors (EBF and EABF) of the glasses. The effective removal cross-section for the fast neutrons (ERCSFN, ∑R) was also calculated theoretically. The received data depicts that the lowest ∑R was achieved for TM10 glasses, where ∑R = 0.0193 cm2 g−1, while TM45 possesses the highest ERCSFN where ∑R = 0.0215 cm2 g−1. © 2020 Korean Nuclear Society

Background: KCNJ11 mutations cause permanent neonatal diabetes through pancreatic ATP-sensitive potassium channel activation. 90% of patients successfully transfer from insulin to oral sulfonylureas with excellent initial glycaemic control; however, whether this control is maintained in the long term is unclear. Sulfonylurea failure is seen in about 44% of people with type 2 diabetes after 5 years of treatment. Therefore, we did a 10-year multicentre follow-up study of a large international cohort of patients with KCNJ11 permanent neonatal diabetes to address the key questions relating to long-term efficacy and safety of sulfonylureas in these patients. Methods: In this multicentre, international cohort study, all patients diagnosed with KCNJ11 permanent neonatal diabetes at five laboratories in Exeter (UK), Rome (Italy), Bergen (Norway), Paris (France), and Krakow (Poland), who transferred from insulin to oral sulfonylureas before Nov 30, 2006, were eligible for inclusion. Clinicians collected clinical characteristics and annual data relating to glycaemic control, sulfonylurea dose, severe hypoglycaemia, side-effects, diabetes complications, and growth. The main outcomes of interest were sulfonylurea failure, defined as permanent reintroduction of daily insulin, and metabolic control, specifically HbA 1c and sulfonylurea dose. Neurological features associated with KCNJ11 permanent neonatal diabetes were also assessed. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02624817. Findings: 90 patients were identified as being eligible for inclusion and 81 were enrolled in the study and provided long-term (>5·5 years cut-off) outcome data. Median follow-up duration for the whole cohort was 10·2 years (IQR 9·3–10·8). At most recent follow-up (between Dec 1, 2012, and Oct 4, 2016), 75 (93%) of 81 participants remained on sulfonylurea therapy alone. Excellent glycaemic control was maintained for patients for whom we had paired data on HbA 1c and sulfonylurea at all time points (ie, pre-transfer [for HbA 1c ], year 1, and most recent follow-up; n=64)—median HbA 1c was 8·1% (IQR 7·2–9·2; 65·0 mmol/mol [55·2–77·1]) before transfer to sulfonylureas, 5·9% (5·4–6·5; 41·0 mmol/mol [35·5–47·5]; p
