Abstract Disposable bamboo chopsticks (DBCs) are difficult to recycle, which inevitably cause secondary pollution. Based on energy and environmental issues, we propose a facile strategy to fabricate floatable photocatalyst (fPC) coated onto DBCs, which can be flexibly used in water purification. The photocatalyst of titania and titanium carbide on bamboo (TiO2/TiC@b) was successfully constructed from TiC-Ti powders and DBCs using a coating technique followed heat treatment in carbon powder, and the fPC exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity under visible light irradation. The analysis results indicate that rutile TiO2 forms on TiC during heat treatment, achieving a low-density material with an average value of approximately 0.5233 g/cm3. The coatings of TiO2/TiC on the bamboo are firm and uniform, with a particle size of about 20–50 nm. XPS results show that a large amount of oxygen vacancies is generated, due to the reaction atmosphere of more carbon and less oxygen, further favoring to narrowing the band gap of TiO2. Furthermore, TiO2 formed on residual TiC would induce the formation of a heterojunction, which effectively inhibits the photogenerated electron–hole recombination via the charge transfer effect. Notably, the degradation of dye Rhodamine B (Rh.B) is 62.4% within 3 h, while a previous adsorption of 36.0% for 1 h. The excellent photocatalytic performance of TiO2/TiC@b can be attributed to the enhanced reaction at the water/air interface due to the reduced light loss in water, improved visible-light response, increased accessible area and charge transfer effect. Our findings show that the proposed strategy achieves a simple, low-cost, and mass-producible method to fabricate fPC onto the used DBCs, which is expected to applied in multiple fields, especially in waste recycling and water treatment.

Here, we propose a two-step pervaporation system with a high-silica CHA (chabazite) membrane, which has sufficient resistance to water and acid, to demonstrate the extraction and condensation of the formic acid formed by electroreduction of CO2. The kinetic diameters of water and formic acid are similar and smaller than the pore size of CHA, while the hydrated electrolyte ions (e.g., K+ and Cl−) are larger than the pore size of CHA. Consequently, the electrolyte ions are separated from the mixture of water and formic acid in the first desalination process, and then water molecules are easily removed from the mixture in the second dehydration process. From 300 ml of an approximately 3 wt% formic acid aqueous solution containing 0.5 M KCl, 10 ml of 18.2 wt% formic acid was obtained.

ZnO spheres were synthesized by solid state oxidation of ZnS microspheres at different oxidation temperatures of 600 and 700 °C in an ambient atmosphere. The high temperature transformation of ZnS microspheres into hexagonal structured and highly crystalline ZnO microspheres comprising interconnected nanoparticles facilitating efficiently electron transport as well as charge collection through an intended path in the solar cell. The comparative physico-chemical and photovoltaic studies were done for synthesized ZnO microspheres. The structural study by x-ray diffraction of ZnO confirmed the hexagonal ZnO; the UV–Visible spectroscopy study showed λmax varying from 410 to 413 nm and 397 to 407 nm for ZnO microspheres synthesized by heating at 600 and at 700 °C, respectively. Additionally, crystalline and electronic structures were validated by density functional theory studies. The computational studies also revealed growth of hexagonal ZnO, where the bandgap varied with the oxidation temperature. The photovoltaic properties of ZnO microspheres synthesized at 600 °C exhibited better performance than the ones synthesized at 700 °C due to high surface roughness leading to enhanced dye loading and favorable charge collection. Dye-sensitized solar cells fabricated from ZnO microspheres synthesized at 600 and 700 °C exhibited the maximum power conversion efficiency of 3.38% and 3.06% correspondingly.

Background: The interferon (IFN)-γ release assay (IGRA) has recently been established as a method to evaluate the infection status of tuberculosis instead of the tuberculin skin test. However, indeterminate results can create challenges to interpretation. The IGRA has been available in Japan since 2005, including the recently launched QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus (QFT-plus) assay. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features and predictors of indeterminate results by the QFT-plus test in routine practice. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 1258 patients. Multivariate logistic regression models were employed to investigate the clinical factors related to indeterminate results by the QFT-plus. Results: Overall, 91.8% of results were found to be conclusive and 8.2% were indeterminate. The QFT-plus indeterminate results were predominantly due to a low level of IFN-γ production by mitogens. Multivariate analysis indicated that an indeterminate result was significantly associated with age, sex, corticosteroid use, autoimmune disease, and inpatient setting. Conclusion: Certain types of individuals are at higher risk of an indeterminate IGRA result. The QFT-plus test for hospitalized patients should be avoided as much as possible, and it is better to perform the test for those patients in outpatient settings.

The presented work shows the antibacterial activity of TiO2 photocatalysts modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The APTES-functionalized TiO2 samples were obtained by the solvothermal process followed by calcination. The antibacterial activity of APTES/TiO2 samples was evaluated with two species of bacteria, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, under artificial solar light (ASL) irradiation. The used bacteria are model organisms characterized by negative zeta potential (approx. −44.2 mV for E. coli and −42.3 mV for S. epidermidis). For the first time, the antibacterial properties of APTES-functionalized TiO2 were evaluated against mono- and co-cultured bacteria. The high antibacterial properties characterized the obtained APTES-modified nanomaterials. The best antibacterial properties were presented in the TiO2-4 h-120 °C-300 mM-Ar-300 °C sample (modified with 300 mM of APTES and calcined at 300 °C). The improvement of the antibacterial properties was attributed to a positive value of zeta potential, high surface area, and porous volume.

Semiconductor-based photocatalyst materials played an important role in the degradation of organic compounds in recent years. Photocatalysis is a simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly process for degrading organic compounds. In this work, vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) and V2O5/RGO (reduced graphene oxide) composite were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. The prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopic analysis, etc. Raman analysis shows the occurrence of RGO characteristic peaks in the composite and different vibrational modes of V2O5. The band gap of flake-shaped V2O5 is reduced and its light absorption capacity is enhanced by making its composite with RGO. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) was studied using both V2O5 and V2O5/RGO composite photocatalyst materials. The V2O5/RGO composite exhibits a superior photocatalytic performance to V2O5. Both catalyst and light play an important role in the degradation process.

Abstract Colored wide‐bandgap semiconductor oxides with abundant mid‐gap states have long been regarded as promising visible light responsive photocatalysts. However, their catalytic activities are hampered by charge recombination at deep level defects, which constitutes the critical challenge to practical applications of these oxide photocatalysts. To address the challenge, a strategy is proposed here that includes creating shallow‐level defects above the deep‐level defects and thermal activating the migration of trapped electrons out of the deep‐level defects via these shallow defects. A simple and scalable solution plasma processing (SPP) technique is developed to process the presynthesized yellow TiO2 with numerous oxygen vacancies (Ov), which incorporates hydrogen dopants into the TiO2 lattice and creates shallow‐level defects above deep level of Ov, meanwhile retaining the original visible absorption of the colored TiO2. At elevated temperature, the SPP‐treated TiO2 exhibits a 300 times higher conversion rate for CO2 reduction under solar light irradiation and a 7.5 times higher removal rate of acetaldehyde under UV light irradiation, suggesting the effectiveness of the proposed strategy to enhance the photoactivity of colored wide‐bandgap oxides for energy and environmental applications.

We describe a sensitive plant monitoring system by the detection of the bioelectric potentials in plants with boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. For sensor electrodes, we used commercially available BDD, Ag, and Pt plate electrodes. We tested this approach on a hybrid species in the genus Opuntia (potted) and three different trees (ground-planted) at different places in Japan. For the Opuntia, we artificially induced bioelectric potential changes by the surface potential using the fingers. We detected substantial changes in bioelectric potentials through all electrodes during finger touches on the surface of potted Opuntia hybrid plants, although the BDD electrodes were several times more sensitive to bioelectric potential change compared to the other electrodes. Similarly for ground-planted trees, we found that both BDD and Pt electrodes detected bioelectric potential change induced by changing environmental factors (temperature and humidity) for months without replacing/removing/changing electrodes, BDD electrodes were 5–10 times more sensitive in this detection than Pt electrodes. Given these results, we conclude that BDD electrodes on live plant tissue were able to consistently detect bioelectrical potential changes in plants.

A practical and long-term usable air-cleaner based on the synergy of photocatalysis and plasma treatments has been developed. A field test of the air-cleaner was carried out in an office smoking room. The results were compared to previously reported laboratory test results. Even after a treatment of 12,000 cigarettes-worth of tobacco smoke, the air-cleaner maintained high-level air-purification activity (98.9% ± 0.1% and 88% ± 1% removal of the total suspended particulate (TSP) and total volatile organic compound (TVOC) concentrations, respectively) at single-pass conditions. Although the removal ratio of TSP concentrations was 98.6% ± 0.2%, the ratio of TVOC concentrations was 43.8% after a treatment of 21,900 cigarettes-worth of tobacco smoke in the field test. These results indicate the importance of suitable maintenance of the reactors in the air-cleaner during field use.

There is a need for highly efficient photocatalysts, particularly for water purification. In this study, we fabricated a mesoporous TiO2 thin film on a boron-doped diamond (BDD) layer by a surfactant-assisted sol-gel method, in which self-assembled amphiphilic surfactant micelles were used as an organic template. Scanning electron microscopy revealed uniform mesopores, approximately 20 nm in diameter, that were hexagonally packed in the TiO2 thin film. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy clarified that the framework crystallized in the anatase phase. Current⁻voltage (I⁻V) measurements showed rectification features at the TiO2/BDD heterojunction, confirming that a p⁻n hetero-interface formed. The as-synthesized mesoporous TiO2/BDD worked well as a photocatalyst, even with a small volume of TiO2 (15 mm × 15 mm × c.a. 1.5 µm in thickness). The use of deep UV light (λ = 222 nm) as a light source was necessary to enhance photocatalytic activity, due to photo-excitation occurring in both BDD and TiO2.

Detecting the bio-potential changes of plants would be useful for monitoring their growth and health in the field. A sensitive plant monitoring system with flexible boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes prepared from BDD powder and resin (Nafion or Vylon-KE1830) was investigated. The properties of the electrodes were compared with those of small BDD plate-type electrodes by monitoring the bioelectric potentials of potted Aloe and hybrid species in the genus Opuntia. While flexible BDD electrodes have wide potential windows, their cyclic voltammograms are different from those of the BDD plate. Further, the potential gap between a pair of electrodes attached to the plants changes as the plants are stimulated artificially with a finger touch, suggesting that the bioelectric potentials in the plant also changed, manifesting as changes in the potential gap between the electrodes. The BDD electrodes were assessed for their response reproducibility to a finger stimulus for 30 days. It was concluded that the plant monitoring system worked well with flexible BDD electrodes. Further, the electrodes were stable, and as reliable as the BDD plate electrodes in this study. Thus, a flexible and inexpensive BDD electrode system was successfully fabricated for monitoring the bioelectric potential changes in plants.

A simple, handy, reusable, and inexpensive water purification unit including a one-end sealed porous amorphous-silica (a-silica) tube coated with 2 μm of porous TiO2 photocatalyst layers has been developed. Both TiO2 and a-silica layers were formed through outside vapor deposition (OVD). Raman spectrum of the porous TiO2-coated a-silica glass tube indicated that the anatase content of the TiO2 layers of the tube was estimated to be approximately 60 wt%. Developed porous TiO2-coated a-silica glass tube has been assayed for the tube filtering feature against Escherichia coli (E. coli) solution used as one of the typical bacteria size species or Qβ phage also used as typical virus size species and compared with the feature of porous a-silica tubes alone. The tubes removed E. coli completely from the aqueous suspension which contained 106 CFU/mL of E. coli without UV irradiation. The porous TiO2-coated a-silica glass tube with UV-C lamps successfully reduced the Qβ phage amount in the suspension from 109 to 103 PFU/mL.

Cosensitization by glutathione-protected Au25 clusters on Ru complex, N719-sensitized TiO2 photoelectrodes is demonstrated. Glutathione-protected Au25 clusters showed no significant changes in properties after adsorption onto TiO2 particles, as confirmed by optical absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry. Adsorption property of the glutathione-protected Au25 clusters depends on the pH, which affects the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of the TiO2 photoelectrode containing Au25 clusters. When pH < 5, the IPCE increases with pH. Conversely, the IPCE decreases with pH when pH > 7. The IPCE of a TiO2 photoelectrode sensitized by both glutathione-protected Au25 clusters and N719 was increased compared with photoelectrodes containing either glutathione-protected Au25 clusters or N719, which suggests that glutathione-protected Au25 clusters act as a coadsorbent for N719 on TiO2 photoelectrodes. This is also supported by the results that the IPCE of N719-sensitized TiO2 photoelectrodes increased upon addition of glutathione. Furthermore, cosensitization by glutathione-protected Au25 clusters on N719-sensitized TiO2 photoelectrodes allows that wavelength of photoelectric conversion was extended to the near infrared (NIR) region. These results suggest that glutathione-protected Au25 clusters act not only as a coadsorbent to increase IPCE but also as an NIR-active sensitizer.

The electrochemical activity of the surface of Nitrogen-doped hydrogenated amorphous carbon thin films (a-CNH, N-doped DLC) toward the inner sphere redox species is controllable by modifying the surface termination. At the oxygen plasma treated N-doped DLC surface (O-DLC), the surface functional groups containing carbon doubly bonded to oxygen (C=O), which improves adsorption of polar molecules, were generated. By oxidative treatment, the electron-transfer rate for dopamine (DA) positively charged inner-sphere redox analyte could be improved at the N-doped DLC surface. For redox reaction of 2,4-dichlorophenol, which induces an inevitable fouling of the anode surface by forming passivating films, the DLC surfaces exhibited remarkably higher stability and reproducibility of the electrode performance. This is due to the electrochemical decomposition of the passive films without the interference of oxygen evolution by applying higher potential. The N-doped DLC film can offer benefits as the polarizable electrode surface with the higher reactivity and higher stability toward inner-sphere redox species. By making use of these controllable electrochemical reactivity at the O-DLC surface, the selective detection of DA in the mixed solution of DA and uric acid could be achieved.

Photoresponsive fibers based on poly(acrylamide) (PAA) with methylene blue (MB) dye were prepared. All semicircular fibers show bending towards the direction of the flat surface of the fiber when illuminated. The fibers recover their initial shape when the illumination stops. The fiber is heated upon illumination and cooled to room temperature once the illumination is stopped. The fiber also is sensitive to humidity, showing bending behavior towards the direction of the flat surface of the fiber upon changing the humidity. The mechanical energy of the PAA/MB fiber is approximately 0.6 mN for the bending direction when it is illuminated. A possible mechanism for the bending behavior is as follow: (1) the fiber is heated upon illumination because of the photothermal effect, (2) the fiber loses water molecules, (3) the fiber shrinks; bending towards the direction of the flat surface of the fiber occurs because of a difference in the shrinkage for the flat surface and the other side of the fiber. Finally, we demonstrated that a PP ball (1.5 mg) can be moved by the mechanical energy produced by the changing shape of the fiber upon illumination.

Fe-doped TiO2 was prepared by hydrothermal treating Ti peroxide sol with different amount of iron nitrate. Fe ions can enter TiO2 lattice by substituting Ti4+ ions, which significantly affect the crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanoparticles. Fe doping also influences the UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence of TiO2, due to the change of electronic structure. It is shown that Fe ions are more easily doped on TiO2 surface than in bulk. The theoretical computation based on the density functional theory (DFT) shows that the Fe ions in TiO2 bulk are localized and mainly act as the recombination centers of photoinduced electrons and holes. Some results support that the Fe3+ ions on surface can form intermediate interfacial transfer pathway for electrons and holes, which is beneficial for increasing the photocatalytic activity of TiO2. The photocatalytic activity first increases and then decreases as the Fe concentration increases, which is coaffected by the bulk-doped and surface-doped Fe ions.
