Abstract

A telescopic platform is equipment used in the Laboratory or Workshop to carry out different kinds of job on the ceiling e.g. fixing or replacing of electric bulbs, fixing of electric fans etc. it is also used to change streetlight on campus. Now that technology changes rapidly, the use of step ladders of different kinds with low reliability and quite a number of limitations should gradually be replaced by less expensive alternative. To this end, Telescopic Platform has been designed and constructed to meet the urgent need for replacement. Materials were locally sourced for such as Bevel gear, Sprockets, Chain, Power screw, Nut etc. and used for the fabrication, which involves welding grinding, fitting practices as well as assembly. The Telescopic Platform so produced is mobile, suitable for use on flat, sloping and terraced surfaces with high reliability. Its height can be varied within a range designed. The telescopic platform designed can offer a good capacity of 834 N with efficiency of 85% and can conveniently carry an average human weight of 736 N.

Abstract

The crankshaft is the part of an engine which translates reciprocating linear piston motion into rotation. Automobile crankshaft failure, apart from poor maintenance culture, is caused by age and distance covered. These attributes which caused crankshaft failure were investigated using questionnaire administration and oral interviews of the maintenance expert and experienced personnel in the three selected crankshaft maintenance shops in Akure, Nigeria based on six popular crankshaft brands. Information/data on failure rate and failure consequence thresholds were established and served as a decision rule on the basis at which optimal reconditioning process, replacement and interchangeability system of the crankshaft components were identified on the occurrence of failure rate (R1) and failure consequence (β1). Computer algorithm was developed for the software package, using Microsoft Visual C# computer language. The software was tested to determine their level of performance. The results generated from the application of these systems were categorised into six scenarios whereby the MC230 Class gave the best result. The software will be veritable tools in predicting crankshaft failure in automobile, manufacturing, and machine tools industries, for prompt solution.

12. Mechanical Properties of Aluminum–4043/Nickelcoated Silicon Carbide Composites Produced via Stir Casting

Abstract

Aluminum metal matrix composites (Al-MMCs) have become attractive for engineering structural applications due to their excellent properties and are increasingly seen as alternative to the conventional monolithic materials particularly in the automotive, aerospace and defence industries. In this study, Al-4043/Ni-coated SiC composite was developed via stir casting process and the mechanical properties of the composites investigated. The composites were produced with varying SiC reinforcement fraction between 5-25 wt%. The microstructure of the composites was characterized using optical microscope and tensile properties of the composite with the monolithic Al-4043 alloy were assessed using a universal testing machine. The composite hardness was assessed using a Brinell hardness testing machine, energy required to break the composite was assessed using Charpy impact testing machine and the wear rate of the composites were evaluated using a Rubin Disc machine. The composites were characterized to possess Al-SiC eutectic microstructure with SiC solid solution precipitates and SiC particles uniformly distributed in the Al matrix. The density of the composites was found to linearly increase with increasing SiC reinforcement fractions. The tensile strength, yield strength and elastic modulus were found to increase with increasing SiC reinforcement fraction and highest values obtained for composite with 25 wt% SiC were 350 MPa, 254 MPa and 13.4 GPa respectively. However, the elongation of the composite with the highest reinforcement was lowest at a value of 10%. The hardness, compressive strength and impact energy of the composites increased significantly as composite with 25 wt% SiC possessed 76 HB, 184 MPa and 48 J respectively. The wear resistance of the Al-4043/SiC composites with highest SiC reinforcement was found to be eleven times that of the monolithic Al-4043 alloy.

20. Modelling machinery procurement with an emphasis on engineering features.

Abstract

Engineering features are one of the predominant factors in considering machines for procurement; others are economic and supply conditions. Three major attributes considered under these strategic decisions are engineering features (reliability), economic features (annual operating cost) and supply condition (delivery date). This is an extension of previous work that focused on the economic factor as the predominant factor. There are benchmarks set for the three strategic decisions for selecting the best equipment or machinery supplier from available alternatives. Because of the multi-objective nature of this problem, there is a need for a surrogate model. A heuristic model was used because of its simplicity and the results were validated using a goal-programming model as the decision tools. This model finds acceptability when procuring equipment/machinery that requires a high level of reliability, and the economic feature as well as supply conditions should be within acceptable limits, such as machine tools, aircraft, industrial machinery, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

An Unmanned Surveillance Aerial Vehicle (USAV) is an air vehicle which is largely used for surveillance, monitoring, reconnaissance, data relay, and data collection or to enter an area which is not safe for human. This study documents the development and evaluation of a low cost, short range unmanned aerial vehicle to monitor a fixed operational urban area. Aerodynamic principles were employed to develop a better concept through reasonable design considerations and assumptions. The design was then modeled using National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Vehicle Sketch Pad (VSP). Analysis of aerodynamic properties of the wing airfoil section, lift and drag analysis of resisting surfaces, stability in flight were carried out with the aid of Computational Fluid dynamics software (JAVA FOIL). Ultimately, in achieving the goal of this study, the design concept was supported by the fabrication of a flying prototype and an economic analysis of the total cost of fabrication. Abstract

The present work reports investigations on mechanical and microstructural properties of foreign and locally fabricated brake disc. From safety point of view, brake disc is a crucial component of the braking system. Foreign brake disc (FBD) are known for their long life span and better mechanical properties under service condition. However, locally fabricated brake disc (LFBD) may possess similar or better mechanical properties than the foreign one. Therefore, the need to investigate their mechanical properties in order to determine which brake disc has better mechanical properties under the same service condition. It was observed that a high machinability index occurs in the locally fabricated brake disc as compared with the foreign brake disc, noticeable in the softness and weak graphite flakes formation in the matrix. Higher resistance to indentation was noticeable in the foreign brake disc as compared to the locally fabricated disc. The locally fabricated brake disc however, witnesses about 22% reduction in toughness compared to the foreign brake disc. An offshoot from this research will enhance the choice of material selection in the manufacturing of brake disc and assurance of locally made spare parts at affordable prices, and the provision of employment opportunities by establishing spare-parts production and allied industries. 27. Computer-aided system for determining industrial machinery optimal replacement period

Abstract

This paper focuses on bridging the gap between age-dependent optimal replacement theory and its industrial applications by identifying and incorporating the criteria considered by field (maintenance) engineers before embarking on industrial machine replacement, into an existing model to make it appropriate industrial-wise.We aim to economically quantify the identified criteria and thereafter integrate them into the weighted average cost of running the machine from the time of its installation to the date of analysis to alleviate the drudgery in using this approach most especially when multiple machines are to be analyzed, the Machine Replacement Analysis Software (MRAS) was developed and its implementation was done using data obtained from a Grinder used for cocoa processing.A curve with polynomial function and coefficient of determination of 0.935 was obtained and this implies replacing the machine after the seventh year of usage.

28. A mixed integer linear programming model for real-time task scheduling in multiprocessor computer system

Abstract

There has been an upsurge in real-time multimedia applications in recent time.On a network, the ability of an average uni processor computer to handle such data may be limited due to the large size of such data.Also, there may be a high number of concurrent users who may want to retrieve data and the need to process them in real-time; and in continuous stream. This may lead to low quality service and deadline misses. The advent of multi-processor systems offers a more efficient way of processing multimedia data in real-time.With the development of appropriate scheduling algorithm, another challenge is the mode of assigning tasks in multi-processor systems.This calls for the use of an appropriate mathematical model that will take cognizance of the nature of variables involved.In this research work, a Mixed Integer Linear Programming Model (MILP) was developed to assign tasks in a multiprocessor system.The MILP model was used to assign tasks to multi-processor systems ranging between 5 and 10 homogeneous processors.The result of the simulation runs shows that with the appropriate scheduling algorithm, a high success rate ratio and guaranteed number of deadlines met could be achieved.

29. Computer-Aided System for Modelling Machinery Procurement Due-Date Prediction in Production Industries

Abstract

Machinery procurement is carried out in both government and private sectors. One of the major criteria for the selection of vendors is their ability to meet the due-date of supply. Failure to meet the supply due-date will affect installation time, commissioning time, as well as start- up date negatively. The set target for the period will be difficult to meet and working overtime to recover the lost period will cause over-flogging of machine, increase in wear rate which can lead to the life-span reduction of the machine. To arrest this situation, a stochastic model was developed to predict machinery/equipment procurement flow time and set due-date for the supply of the machine by the vendor. The model utilized data on the procurement activities which were analysed based on optimistic, most likely and pessimistic time for each activity. The stochastic model used Project Evaluation and Review Techniques (PERT) for analysing these three time estimates from which expected time was predicted. The model accommodates procurement strategic decisions, flow chart development, data collection form, network analysis, activities paths determination and critical path identification. This research was able to develop a model for machinery procurement, develop computer software for implementing the model and validate the effectiveness of the model using an existing company as case study. The expected completion time is 45 days, with variance of 2 days while the probability of supplying the machine in not more than 2 days is 86%. This model will find application in small, medium and large scale industries in both developing and developed countries.
