The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN), a cluster of GABAergic cells, modulates sensory attention and perception through its inhibitory projections to thalamic nuclei. Cortical and thalamic topographic projections to the auditory TRN are thought to compose tonotopic organizations for modulation of thalamic auditory processing. The present study determined tonotopies in the TRN and examined interactions between probe and masker sounds to obtain insights into temporal processing associated with tonotopies. Experiments were performed on anesthetized rats, using juxta-cellular recording and labeling techniques. Following determination of tonotopies, effects of sub-threshold masker sound stimuli on onset and late responses evoked by a probe sound were examined. The main findings are as follows. Tonotopic organizations were recognized in cell location and axonal projection. Tonotopic gradients and their clarities were diverse, depending on sound intensity, response type and the tiers of the TRN. Robust alterations in response magnitude, latency and/or burst spiking took place following masker sounds in either a broad or narrow range of frequencies that were close or far away from the probe sound frequency. The majority of alterations were suppression recognizable up to 600 ms in the interval between masker and probe sounds, and directions of alteration differed depending on the interval. Finally, masker sound effects were associated with tonotopic organizations. These findings suggest that the auditory TRN is comprised of sound intensity-dependent multiple tonotopic organizations, which could configure temporal interactions of auditory information across sound frequencies and impose complex but spatiotemporally structured influences on thalamic auditory processing.

Aims The methodology to distinguish between the heart failure (HF) with recovered ejection fraction (HFrecEF) and those with continuously reduced ejection fraction (EF) (HFcrEF) on admission has not been established. We recently demonstrated that the ratio of plasma levels of pro‐B‐type natriuretic peptide (proBNP) to total BNP (proBNP plus mature BNP) is decreased on admission in patients with mild acute HF, but not in severe acute HF as a compensatory mechanism for activating cyclic GMP via increases of bioactive mature BNP. We aimed to test the hypothesis that the ratio of bioactive mature BNP to total BNP is associated with reverse remodelling capacity in patients with HF with reduced EF. Methods and results Plasma proBNP and total BNP were measured in patients with acute decompensated HF by using specific and sensitive enzyme immunochemiluminescent assay. Estimated percent mature BNP (%emBNP) was calculated as ([total BNP − proBNP]/total BNP) × 100. We retrospectively identified the patients with reduced EF (≤40%, on admission) who had echocardiographic data after discharge (n = 93). We defined patients with increased EF by >10% during the follow‐up term (median, 545 days) after the admission as HFrecEF group. Background: Takotsubo syndrome occasionally occurs in patients with fever due to underlying diseases. However, the impact of body temperature on inhospital prognosis of patients with takotsubo syndrome remains unknown. Methods: Using the patient cohort in the Tokyo Cardiovascular Care Unit Network Registry from 2013 to 2015, we identified 421 eligible patients whose data on body temperature at admission were available and classified them into three groups: high body temperature group (≥37.5°C; n=27), normal body temperature group (36.0–37.4°C; n=319), and low body temperature group (≤35.9°C; n=75). We compared the patient characteristics and inhospital outcomes among the three groups. Results: On admission, the high body temperature group showed a higher proportion of men and preceding physical triggers, higher heart and respiratory rates, and higher C-reactive protein level than the other groups. Inhospital all-cause mortality was significantly higher in the high body temperature group than in the normal or low body temperature group (18.5% vs. 2.2% vs. 4.0%, respectively, P Conclusions: Our findings suggest that high body temperature at admission is a strong predictor of inhospital mortality in patients with takotsubo syndrome. Febrile takotsubo syndrome patients may need to be managed with recognition of life-threatening conditions from the time of diagnosis, no matter what the causes of fever are.

A 43-year-old woman presented with worsening shortness of breath and lower-extremity edema. Echocardiography and computed tomography showed obstruction of blood flow due to a mass filling the right atrium. Emergency surgery was performed for circulatory failure. Primary cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma was diagnosed based on a histological examination. The patient died about two months after the diagnosis despite surgical excision and radiation therapy. The poor prognosis may have resulted from the grossly incomplete removal of the tumor and chemotherapy intolerance. We herein report a case of primary cardiac rhabdomyosarcoma filling the right atrium and offer possible reasons for the poor prognosis.

However, ethnic disparities in takotsubo syndrome (TTS) remain elusive. This study assessed differences in clinical characteristics between Japanese and European TTS patients and determined the impact of ethnicity on in-hospital outcomes. Methods: TTS patients in Japan were enrolled from 10 hospitals and TTS patients in Europe were enrolled from 32 hospitals participating in the International Takotsubo Registry. Clinical characteristics and in-hospital outcomes were compared between Japanese and European patients. Results: A total of 503 Japanese and 1670 European patients were included. Japanese patients were older (72.6 ± 11.4 years vs. 68.0 ± 12.0 years; p < 0.001) and more likely to be male (18.5 vs. 8.4%; p < 0.001) than European TTS patients. Physical triggering factors were more common (45.5 vs. 32.0%; p < 0.001), and emotional triggers less common (17.5 vs. 31.5%; p < 0.001), in Japanese patients than in European patients. Japanese patients were more likely to experience cardiogenic shock during the acute phase (15.5 vs. 9.0%; p < 0.001) and had a higher in-hospital mortality (8.2 vs. 3.2%; p < 0.001). However, ethnicity itself did not appear to have an impact on in-hospital mortality. Machine learning approach revealed that the presence of physical stressors was the most important prognostic factor in both Japanese and European TTS patients. Conclusion: Differences in clinical characteristics and in-hospital outcomes between Japanese and European TTS patients exist. Ethnicity does not impact the outcome in TTS patients. Psychophysical stresses frequently increase sensitivity and response to pain, which is termed stress-induced hyperalgesia (SIH). However, the mechanism remains unknown. The rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) and locus coeruleus (LC) are core elements of the descending pain modulatory system, which modulate nociceptive transmission in the spinal dorsal horn. In the present study we examined the acetylation of histone H3 in the RVM and LC after repeated restraint stress for 3 weeks to clarify changes in the descending pain modulatory system in the rat with SIH. The repeated restraint stress induced mechanical hypersensitivity in the hindpaw and an increase in acetylation of histone H3 in the RVM but not the LC. The number of acetylated histone H3-IR cells in the RVM was significantly higher in the repeated restraint group (282.9 ± 43.1) than that in the control group (134.7 ± 15.6, p 0.05). Furthermore, the repeated restraint stress increased acetylation of histone H3 in the RVM GABAergic neurons but not the RVM serotonergic neurons. The GAD67 protein level in the RVM was significantly higher in repeated restraint group (144.9 ± 17.0%) than that in the control group (100.0 ± 8.9%, p 0.05). These findings suggest the possibility that the stress-induced neuroplasticity in the RVM GABAergic neurons is involved in the mechanical hypersensitivity due to the dysfunction of the descending pain modulatory system.

Background: Although the typical apical form of Takotsubo syndrome and anterior acute myocardial infarction have similar electrocardiographic and echocardiographic presentations, data on the clinical differences between the two disorders are limited. Methods: Using the Tokyo Cardiovascular Care Unit network registry, we identified patients hospitalised with apical Takotsubo syndrome ( n=540; 2010–2014) or anterior acute myocardial infarction ( n=2,806; 2013–2014) and created 522 age and sex-matched pairs (mean age 74.1 years; women 78.5%). We compared the clinical characteristics and inhospital outcomes between the two groups. Results: On admission, patients with apical Takotsubo syndrome showed a lower body mass index, less frequent chest pain/tightness, lower systolic blood pressure, higher heart rate, lower creatine kinase, higher C-reactive protein and brain natriuretic peptide, and less frequent ST-elevation than patients with anterior acute myocardial infarction. Patients with apical Takotsubo syndrome received catecholamine (12.8% vs. 24.5%, PConclusions: This study found that cardiac and non-cardiac mortality risks differed significantly between apical Takotsubo syndrome and anterior acute myocardial infarction. Our findings underscore the importance of differentiating between the two disorders for appropriate management.

The subcortical areas such as medial preoptic area (MPO), dorsomedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (DMH), basolateral (BLA) and central nuclei of the amygdala (CeA), and the cortical areas such as insular (IC) and anterior cingulate cortices (ACC) play an important role in pain control via the descending pain modulatory system. In the present study we examined the expression of phosphorylated -cAMP-response element binding protein (pCREB) and the acetylation of histone H3 in these subcortical and cortical areas after repeated restraint stress to reveal changes in the subcortical and cortical areas that affect the function of descending pain modulatory system in the rats with SIH. The repeated restraint stress for 3 weeks induced a decrease in mechanical threshold in the rat hindpaw, an increase in the expression of pCREB in the MPO and an increase in the acetylation of histone H3 in the MPO, BLA and IC. The MPO was the only area that showed an increase in both the expression of pCREB and the acetylation of histone H3 among these examined areas after the repeated restraint stress. Furthermore, the number of pCREB-IR or acetylated histone H3-IR cells in the MPO was negatively correlated with the mechanical threshold. Together, our data represent the importance of the MPO among the subcortical and cortical areas that control descending pain modulatory system under the condition of SIH.

Cross-modal auditory influence on cell activity in the primary visual cortex emerging at short latencies raises the possibility that the first-order visual thalamic nucleus, which is considered dedicated to unimodal visual processing, could contribute to cross-modal sensory processing, as has been indicated in the auditory and somatosensory systems. To test this hypothesis, the effects of sound stimulation on visual cell activity in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus were examined in anesthetized rats, using juxta-cellular recording and labeling techniques. Visual responses evoked by light (white LED) were modulated by sound (noise burst) given simultaneously or 50-400 ms after the light, even though sound stimuli alone did not evoke cell activity. Alterations of visual response were observed in 71% of cells (57/80) with regard to response magnitude, latency, and/or burst spiking. Suppression predominated in response magnitude modulation, but de novo responses were also induced by combined stimulation. Sound affected not only onset responses but also late responses. Late responses were modulated by sound given before or after onset responses. Further, visual responses evoked by the second light stimulation of a double flash with a 150-700 ms interval were also modulated by sound given together with the first light stimulation. In morphological analysis of labeled cells projection cells comparable to X-, Y-, and W-like cells and interneurons were all susceptible to auditory influence. These findings suggest that the first-order visual thalamic nucleus incorporates auditory influence into parallel and complex thalamic visual processing for cross-modal modulation of visual attention and perception.

This study examines the impacts of plain English on the length of annual reports for the sample of 20-F forms which are annually filed by foreign firms listed on NYSE and NASDAQ. We found out that foreign firms have better complied with plain English in their disclosures over time with shorter sentences, less jargon, and readable writing styles; however, there was a significant increase in the length of 20-F from 2004 to 2013. We also recognize the impacts of plain English on the length of annual reports are mixed. The issuers may completely improve the readability of annual reports without significantly increasing the length of annual reports if they sophisticatedly combine all four elements of plain English in their disclosures. Additionally, the usage of passive voice and jargon in firms’ disclosures negatively influences the liquidity of stocks. There are significant differences in behaviors of issuing annual reports among countries. After the financial crisis in 2009, annual reports become longer and less readable.

The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) occupies a highly strategic position to modulate sensory processing in the thalamocortical loop circuitries. It has been shown that TRN visual cells projecting to first- and higher-order thalamic nuclei have distinct levels of burst spiking, suggesting the possibility that the TRN exerts differential influences on information processing in first- and higher-order thalamic nuclei that compose the lemniscal and non-lemniscal sensory systems, respectively. To determine whether this possibility could extend across sensory modalities, the present study examined activities of TRN auditory cells projecting to the ventral and dorsal divisions (first- and higher-order auditory thalamic nuclei) of the medial geniculate nucleus (TRN-MGV and TRN-MGD cells) in anesthetized rats, using juxta-cellular recording and labeling techniques. Burst spiking of TRN-MGV cells consisted of larger numbers of spikes with shorter inter-spike intervals as compared with that of TRN-MGD cells in auditory response evoked by noise burst stimuli. Similar distinctions, although not statistically significant, were observed in spontaneous activity. Furthermore, the features of burst spiking varied in association with the topographies of cell body and terminal field locations. These features of burst spiking are similar to those observed in the two types of TRN visual cells. First- and higher-order thalamic nuclei are known to have distinct levels of burst spiking across sensory modalities. Taken together, it is suggested that the distinctions in burst spiking in the TRN, in conjunction with those in thalamic nuclei, could constitute distinct circuitries for lemniscal and non-lemniscal sensory processing in the thalamocortical loop.

Conventional extracellular recording has revealed cross-modal alterations of auditory cell activities by cutaneous electrical stimulation of the hindpaw in first- and higher-order auditory thalamic nuclei (Donishi et al., 2011). Juxta-cellular recording and labeling techniques were used in the present study to examine the cross-modal alterations in detail, focusing on possible nucleus and/or cell type-related distinctions in modulation. Recordings were obtained from 80 cells of anesthetized rats. Cutaneous electrical stimulation, which did not elicit unit discharges, i.e., subthreshold effects, modulated early (onset) and/or late auditory responses of first- (64%) and higher-order nucleus cells (77%) with regard to response magnitude, latency and/or burst spiking. Attenuation predominated in the modulation of response magnitude and burst spiking, and delay predominated in the modulation of response time. Striking alterations of burst spiking took place in higher-order nucleus cells, which had the potential to exhibit higher propensities for burst spiking as compared to first-order nucleus cells. A subpopulation of first-order nucleus cells showing modulation in early response magnitude in the caudal domain of the nucleus had larger cell bodies and higher propensities for burst spiking as compared to cells showing no modulation. These findings suggest that somatosensory influence is incorporated into parallel channels in auditory thalamic nuclei to impose distinct impacts on cortical and subcortical sensory processing. Further, cutaneous electrical stimulation given after early auditory responses modulated late responses. Somatosensory influence is likely to affect ongoing auditory processing at any time without being coincident with sound onset in a narrow temporal window.

CFA injection into the hindpaw did not induce a significant change in those expression and acetylation. Quantitative image analysis demonstrated that the numbers of pCREB-, acetylated histone H3- and ΔFosB-IR cells in the RVM were significantly higher in the FS group than those in the naive group. The CFA injection after the FS did not affect the FS-induced increases in the expression of pCREB and ΔFosB and the acetylation of histone H3 in the RVM even though nullified the increase in the acetylation of histone H3 in the LC. These findings suggest different neuroplasticities between the RVM and LC after the FS, which may be involved in activity change of descending pain modulatory system after the CFA injection.

The descending pain modulatory system is thought to undergo plastic changes following peripheral tissue injury and exerts bidirectional (facilitatory and inhibitory) influence on spinal nociceptive transmission. The mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) superfamily consists of four main members: the extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase1/2 (ERK1/2), the c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs), the p38 MAPKs, and the ERK5. MAPKs not only regulate cell proliferation and survival but also play important roles in synaptic plasticity and memory formation. Recently, many studies have demonstrated that noxious stimuli activate MAPKs in several brain regions that are components of descending pain modulatory system. They are involved in pain perception and pain-related emotional responses. In addition, psychophysical stress also activates MAPKs in these brain structures. Greater appreciation of the convergence of mechanisms between noxious stimuli- and psychological stress-induced neuroplasticity is likely to lead to the identification of novel targets for a variety of pain syndromes.

Recent studies have highlighted cross-modal sensory modulations in the primary sensory areas in the cortex, suggesting that cross-modal sensory interactions occur at early stages in the hierarchy of sensory processing. Multi-modal sensory inputs from non-lemniscal thalamic nuclei and cortical inputs from the secondary sensory and association areas are considered responsible for the modulations. On the other hand, there is little evidence of cross-sensory modal sensitivities in lemniscal thalamic nuclei. In the present study, we were interested in a possibility that somatosensory stimulation may affect auditory response in the ventral division (MGV) of the medial geniculate nucleus (MG), a lemniscal thalamic nucleus that is considered to be dedicated to auditory uni-modal processing. Experiments were performed on anesthetized rats. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the hindpaw, which is thought to evoke nociception and seems unrelated to auditory processing, modulated unit discharges in response to auditory stimulation (noise bursts). The modulation was observed in the MGV and non-lemniscal auditory thalamic nuclei such as the dorsal and medial divisions of the MG. The major effect of somatosensory stimulation was suppression. The most robust suppression was induced by electrical stimuli given simultaneously with noise bursts or preceding noise bursts by 10 to 20 ms. The results indicate that the lemniscal (MGV) and non-lemniscal auditory nuclei are subject to somatosensory influence. In everyday experience intense somatosensory stimuli such as pain interrupt our ongoing hearing or interfere with clear recognition of sound. The modulation of lemniscal auditory response by somatosensory stimulation may underlie such cross-modal disturbance of auditory perception as a form of cross-modal switching of attention.

In the present study we examined whether the descending facilitation from the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) is required for the enhancement of formalin-evoked nocifensive behavior following repeated forced swim stress. Rats were subjected to forced or sham swim stress for 3days. Withdrawal latency to noxious thermal stimuli and mechanical withdrawal threshold to von Frey filaments did not change significantly in both groups at 24h after the last stress session. The forced swim stress showed significantly enhanced nocifensive behavior to the subcutaneous administration of formalin at 2days after the last stress session (1330.1+/-62.8s), compared to the sham swim (1076+/-102.4s, p0.05) and naive groups (825.9+/-83.2s, p0.01). The destruction of the RVM with ibotenic acid led to prevent the enhancement of formalin-evoked nocifensive behavior in the forced swim group. These findings suggest that the descending facilitation from the RVM may be involved in the enhancement of formalin-evoked nocifensive behavior following the forced swim stress.

In the rat cortex, the two non-primary auditory areas, posterodorsal and ventral auditory areas, may constitute the two streams of auditory processing in their distinct projections to the posterior parietal and insular cortices. The posterior parietal cortex is considered crucial for auditory spatial processing and directed attention, while possible auditory function of the insular cortex is largely unclear. In this study, we electrophysiologically delineated an auditory area in the caudal part of the granular insular cortex (insular auditory area, IA) and examined efferent connections of IA with anterograde tracer biocytin to deduce the functional significance of IA. IA projected to the rostral agranular insular cortex, a component of the lateral prefrontal cortex. IA also projected to the adjacent dysgranular insular cortex and the caudal agranular insular cortex and sent feedback projections to cortical layer I of the primary and secondary somatosensory areas. Corticofugal projections terminated in auditory, somatosensory and visceral thalamic nuclei, and the bottom of the thalamic reticular nucleus that could overlap the visceral sector. The ventral part of the caudate putamen, the external cortex of the inferior colliculus and the central amygdaloid nucleus were also the main targets. IA exhibited neural response to transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the forepaw in addition to acoustic stimulation (noise bursts and pure tones). The results suggest that IA subserves diverse functions associated with somatosensory, nociceptive and visceral processing that may underlie sound-driven emotional and autonomic responses. IA, being potentially involved in such extensive cross-modal sensory interactions, could also be an important anatomical node of auditory processing linked to higher neural processing in the prefrontal cortex.

We assessed the contribution of central 5HT2A receptors to the craniofacial tissue nociception in naïve male rats. First, we tested whether activation of central 5HT2A receptors affected nociceptive neural activities recorded from superficial laminae of the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis (Vc)/upper cervical spinal cord junction (Vc/C2) region. Two types of units, such as deep-nociceptive or skin-wide dynamic range (WDR) units were identified from extracellular recordings. Topical administration of 5HT2A receptor agonist, (+/-)-2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI) onto the Vc/C2 region significantly reduced deep-nociceptive unit discharges evoked by formalin injection into the masseter muscle. Noxious pinch stimulation to the facial skin-evoked skin-WDR unit discharges was significantly reduced by topical administration of 0.1 mg/rat DOI onto the Vc/C2 region. Second, we tested whether i.c.v. administration of DOI affected Fos-like immunoreactivity (-LI) evoked by formalin injection into the masseter muscle. Fos-LI was significantly induced mainly at the ventrolateral (vl) area of trigeminal subnucleus interpolaris (Vi)/Vc junction (vl-Vi/Vc) region and Vc/C2 region in vehicle-treated rats. Formalin-evoked Fos-LI was significantly reduced in laminae I-II of the Vc/C2, but not vl-Vi/Vc region after i.c.v. administration of DOI. Finally, orofacial nocifensive behavioral activities evoked by formalin injection into the masseter muscle were significantly reduced by intracisternal administration of DOI. These results suggest that 5HT2A receptors in the Vc/C2 region mediate antinociceptive effects in the craniofacial nociception.

We investigated the contribution of peripheral 5-HT2A or 5-HT3 receptors to Fos expression in the trigeminal spinal nucleus (VSP) following acute masseter muscle injury in male rats with or without temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation persisting for 7 days. TMJ inflammation was evoked by an injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). Two hours after formalin injection into the masseter muscle produced Fos-like immunoreactivity (Fos-LI) in several regions of the VSP and upper cervical spinal cord (C2), such as ventrolateral (vl) area of the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis (Vc)/subnucleus interpolaris (Vi) transition (vl-Vi/Vc), paratrigeminal nucleus (dPa5), middle portion of the Vc (mid-Vc) and Vc/C2 transition (Vc/C2) regions in both groups. Significant increases in the number of Fos-LI were observed in these areas in CFA group compared with non-CFA group. TMJ inflammation alone did not induce a significant level of Fos-LI in the VSP. In order to assess the effect of antagonizing 5-HT2A or 5-HT3 receptors on formalin-induced Fos-LI, rats were pre-treated with local (masseter muscle) administration of ketanserin or tropisetron (0.01, 0.1 mg/rat) 20 min prior to formalin injection. In CFA group, these antagonists given locally reduced the Fos-LI response in the laminae I-II at the mid-Vc and Vc/C2 regions. These antagonists reduced the Fos-LI response in the dPa5, but not in the vl-Vi/Vc region. The Fos-LI response was not affected by i.v. administration of ketanserin (0.01, 0.1 mg/rat) or tropisetron (0.01 mg/rat). In non-CFA group, these antagonists given locally did not reduce the Fos-LI response. These results suggest that peripheral 5-HT2A and 5-HT3 receptors contribute to nociceptive processing in the masseter muscle in TMJ inflammatory conditions.

The role of peripheral serotonin (5HT) 2A and 5HT1A receptors on the orofacial nocifensive behavioral activities evoked by the injection of formalin into the masseter muscle was evaluated in the rats with persistent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation evoked by Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA). The orofacial nocifensive behavioral activities evoked by the injection of formalin into masseter muscle were significantly enhanced at 1 day (CFA day 1 group) or 7 days (CFA day 7 group) during TMJ inflammation. Pretreatment with local administration of 5HT2A receptor antagonist, ketanserin (0.01, 0.1 mg/rat) into the masseter muscle or systemic administration of ketanserin via i.p. injection (1 mg/kg) reduced the orofacial nocifensive behavioral activities of the late phase evoked by formalin injection into masseter muscle on the side of TMJ inflammation (CFA day 7 group). However, local (0.001-0.1 mg/rat) or systemic (1 mg/kg) administration of 5HT1A receptor antagonist, propranolol, into masseter muscle did not produce the antinociceptive effect in CFA day 7 group. Moreover, local administration of ketanserin (0.1 mg) or propranolol (0.1 mg) into masseter muscle did not inhibit nocifensive orofacial behavior in rats without TMJ inflammation. These data suggest that persistent TMJ inflammation causes the elevation of the orofacial nocifensive behavior, and peripheral 5HT2A receptors play an important role in mediating the deep craniofacial tissue nociception in rats with TMJ inflammation.

Thalamocortical projections from the auditory thalamic nuclei were examined systematically in the rat, including those from the dorsal division (MGD) of the medial geniculate body (MG), which were less clearly determined in previous studies. Injections of biocytin confined in each thalamic nucleus revealed characteristic features of projections in terms of cortical areas and layers of termination. In contrast to exclusively selective projections to cortical area Te1 from the ventral division (MGV) of the MG, diffuse and selective terminations were observed in the projections from the dorsal (MGD) and medial divisions (MGM) of the MG and the suprageniculate nucleus (SG). Diffuse termination was continuous in layer I or VI of the temporal cortex, while selective termination was in layers III and IV of discrete cortical areas. In addition to diffuse termination in the upper half of layer I of cortical areas Te1, Te2d and Te3v, the MGD and SG projections formed plexuses of axons selectively in lower layer III and layer IV of Te2d and Te3v. The SG projections targeted further the dorsal bank of the perirhinal cortex (PRh), while the MGD projections targeted in part the ventral fringe of Te1. The MGM projections terminated diffusely in layer VI of Te1 and Te3v, and selectively in lower layer III and layer IV of the rostral part of Te3v. Diffuse projections to layers I and VI from the SG and MGM extended in cortical regions over the dorsal fringe of Te1. Selective dense projections to middle cortical layers of Te2d and Te3v (especially its rostral part) indicate the existence of auditory areas, which could be involved in cross-modal interaction with visual and somatosensory system, respectively. Diffuse projections are supposed to bind information processings in these areas and the primary auditory area (Te1).

Typically, long-term potentiation (LTP) has been assessed as long-lasting changes in field potentials or intracellularly recorded postsynaptic potentials evoked by activation of a set of afferents. In the present experiment, we determined changes in spontaneous unit activity in the dentate gyrus (DG) following high-frequency (HFS) or low-frequency stimulation (LFS) of the medial perforant pathway. Experiments were performed in anesthetized rats. Field potentials and unit recordings were obtained alternatively from the same recording electrode. Of 39 single units isolated (from 25 independent sessions), the spontaneous discharges of 13 units (33%) increased, while 7 units (18%) decreased their discharges following HFS that induced significant LTP of the field potentials. Such opposing modulations of unit discharges following HFS were observed on simultaneously recorded units. LFS applied following HFS also induced bi-directional effects on unit discharges. Of 20 single units isolated from a subset of recordings (12 experiments) to which LFS was applied, 6 units increased and 4 units decreased their discharges. LFS produced a long-lasting (>20 min) depotentiation, to the baseline level, on field potentials in four recording cases. The autocorrelation functions indicated that the isolated unit discharges were comparable to those of the putative DG granule cells and interneurons, shown in previous studies. The results suggest that changes in synaptic efficacy following HFS or LFS produce rather dynamic changes in cell activity in the DG.

Experiments on anesthetized cats were used to study the activity of motor cortex neurons (field 4 gamma) in response to separate and simultaneous stimulation of the ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus and the somatosensory cortex (field 2) of the brain. Long-term potentiation of motor cortex neuron activity in response to simultaneous stimulation of the ventrolateral nucleus and somatosensory cortex arose only in regions receiving corticocortical projections from the stimulation site in the somatosensory cortex of the brain, while regions lacking corticocortical projections from the somatosensory cortex showed no such effect. Experiments demonstrated that the duration of increased motor cortex neuron activity following stimulation of the ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus and somatosensory cortex was greater than one hour after recording was started. These data led to the conclusion that simultaneous stimulation of corticocortical and thalamocortical afferents can alter the level of neuronal activity in the motor cortex only in regions with convergent sensory inputs from the thalamus and somatosensory cortex of the brain.

Our attention to a sensory cue of a given modality interferes with attention to a sensory cue of another modality. However, an object emitting various sensory cues attracts attention more effectively. The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) could play a pivotal role in such cross-modal modulation of attention given that cross-modal sensory interaction takes place in the TRN, because the TRN occupies a highly strategic position to function in the control of gain and/or gating of sensory processing in the thalamocortical loop. In the present study cross-modal interactions between visual and auditory inputs were examined in single TRN cells of anesthetised rats using juxta-cellular recording and labeling techniques. Visual or auditory responses were modulated by subthreshold sound or light stimuli, respectively, in the majority of recordings (46 of 54 visual and 60 of 73 auditory cells). However, few bimodal sensory cells were found. Cells showing modulation of the sensory response were distributed in the whole visual and auditory sectors of the TRN. Modulated cells sent axonal projections to first-order or higher-order thalamic nuclei. Suppression predominated in modulation that took place not only in primary responses but also in late responses repeatedly evoked after sensory stimulation. Combined sensory stimulation also evoked de-novo responses, and modulated response latency and burst spiking. These results indicate that the TRN incorporates sensory inputs of different modalities into single cell activity to function in sensory processing in the lemniscal and non-lemniscal systems. This raises the possibility that the TRN constitutes neural pathways involved in cross-modal attentional gating.

Stress affects brain activity and promotes long-term changes in multiple neural systems. Exposure to stressors causes substantial effects on the perception and response to pain. In several animal models, chronic stress produces lasting hyperalgesia. Postmortem studies of patients with stress-related psychiatric disorders have demonstrated a decrease in the number of astrocytes and the level of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a marker for astrocyte, in the cerebral cortex. Since astrocytes play vital roles in maintaining neuroplasticity via synapse maintenance and secretion of neurotrophins, damage of astrocytes is thought to be involved in the neuropathology. In the present study we examined GFAP, S100β and CD11b protein levels in the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) after the subacute and chronic restraint stresses to clarify changes in descending pain modulatory system in the rat with stress-induced hyperalgesia. Chronic restraint stress (6h/day for 3 weeks), but not subacute restraint stress (6h/day for 3 days), caused a marked mechanical hypersensitivity. The effects of adrenal steroids on synaptic plasticity were investigated in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Experiments were performed in either adrenalectomized or intact (non-adrenalectomized), anesthetized rats. High-frequency stimulation was applied to the medial perforant pathway at three different frequencies; 100, 200 or 400 Hz, either post- or pre- and post-administration of the specific Type-II adrenal steroid receptor agonist RU 28362. High-frequency stimulation prior to RU 28362 administration produced a frequency-dependent long-term potentiation of the population spike, with 100 Hz showing no long-term potentiation and 400 Hz the highest degree of potentiation. In contrast, following administration of RU 28362, high-frequency stimulation produced a long-term depression (in comparison to baseline). In the experiments in which high-frequency stimulation was applied both pre- and post-RU 28362 administration, the size of the population spike was initially potentiated and then depotentiated after the RU 28362 injection. This effect was also frequency dependent, although opposite to the long-term potentiation effect. That is, 400 Hz was the least effective frequency for inducing long-term depression/depotentiation, while 100 Hz was the most effective. Long-term depression/depotentiation was immediate following high-frequency stimulation and lasted for the extent of the recording session, in some cases longer than 1 h. Similar to the finding reported in the accompanying paper, induction of long-term potentiation was substantially suppressed by RU 28362. However, in a number of experiments long-term potentiation could still be induced after RU 28362 administration, even after long-term depression/depotentiation had been established. Asparagine-linked glycans (N-glycans) are crucial signals for protein folding, quality control, and endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-associated degradation (ERAD) in yeast and mammals. Although similar ERAD processes were reported in plants, little is known about their biochemical mechanisms, especially their relationships with N-glycans. Here, we show that a missense mutation in the Arabidopsis EMS-mutagenized bri1 suppressor 3 ( EBS3 ) gene suppresses a dwarf mutant, bri1-9, the phenotypes of which are caused by ER retention and ERAD of a brassinosteroid receptor, BRASSINOSTEROID-INSENSITIVE 1 (BR1). EBS3 encodes the Arabidopsis ortholog of the yeast asparagine-linked glycosylation 9 (ALG9), which catalyzes the ER luminal addition of two terminal α1,2 mannose (Man) residues in assembling the three-branched N-glycan precursor [glucose(Glc)] 3 (Man) 9 [ N -acetylglucosamine(GlcNAc)] 2 . Consistent with recent discoveries revealing the importance of the Glc 3 Man 9 GlcNAc 2 C-branch in generating an ERAD signal, the ebs3-1 mutation prevents the Glc 3 Man 9 GlcNAc 2 assembly and inhibits the ERAD of bri1-9. By contrast, overexpression of EBS4 in ebs3-1 bri1-9, which encodes the Arabidopsis ortholog of the yeast ALG12 catalyzing the ER luminal α1,6 Man addition, adds an α1,6 Man to the truncated N-glycan precursor accumulated in ebs3-1 bri1-9 , promotes the bri1-9 ERAD, and neutralizes the ebs3-1 suppressor phenotype. Furthermore, a transfer (T)-DNA insertional alg3-T2 mutation, which causes accumulation of an even smaller N-glycan precursor carrying a different exposed α1,6 Man, promotes the ERAD of bri1-9 and enhances its dwarfism. Taken together, our results strongly suggest that the glycan signal to mark an ERAD client in Arabidopsis is likely conserved to be an α1,6 Man-exposed N-glycan.

Synaptic plasticity in the motor cortex of anesthetized cats was examined using intracellular recording and labeling techniques. Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) was delivered in the superficial layers and recordings were made from cells in layer V. When the neuron responded to ICMS with an excitatory postsynaptic potential (EPSP), tetanic ICMS (100-200 Hz, 10-20 s) was delivered to the same site. Five of 19 cells which were examined and labeled with biocytin showed long-term potentiation (LTP) of the EPSP, and 12 cells showed post-tetanic potentiation (PTP) following the tetanic stimulation. All the examined cells were pyramidal neurons. These results demonstrate that plasticity exists within the intracortical connection of the motor cortex that may be involved in motor learning.

We investigated spike trains of the feline nervous system, which are considered to be non-stationary point processes characterized by changes of the functional interneuronal connectivities. Ordinary long-term averaged correlation methods are useful as processing time series data as a quasi-stationary point process, but not as a non-stationary point process. We depicted the joint impulse configuration scatter diagram proposed by D.H. Perkel et al. for subsets of the neural spike train to find changes of functional connectivities The time-dependent scatter diagram wasgenerated by arranging these scatter diagrams in chronological order. Time-dependent scatter diagrams were generated for spike trains derived from the anterior ectosylvius sulcus, the coronal sulcus, the lateral bank of the presylvius sulcus, the medial wall of the presylvius sulcus, the medial wall of the cruciate sulcus. The patterns of time-dependent scatter diagrams for these cortices are considered to change in relation to eye movement. Changes of these patterns correspond to those of the functional connectivities related to the dynamics of eye movement in the neural system.

The auditory sector of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) plays a pivotal role in gain and/or gate control of auditory input relayed from the thalamus to cortex. The TRN is also likely involved in cross-modal sensory processing for attentional gating function. In the present study, we anatomically examined how cortical and thalamic afferents intersect in the auditory TRN with regard to these two functional pathways. Iontophoretic injections of biocytin into subregions of the auditory TRN, which were made with the guidance of electrophysiological recording of auditory response, resulted in retrograde labeling of cortical and thalamic cells, indicating the sources of afferents to the TRN. Cortical afferents from area Te1 (temporal cortex, area 1), which contains the primary and anterior auditory fields, topographically intersected thalamic afferents from the ventral division of the medial geniculate nucleus at the subregions of the auditory TRN, suggesting tonotopically organized convergence of afferents, although they innervated a given small part of the TRN from large parts. In the caudodorsal and rostroventral parts of the auditory TRN, cortical afferents from nonprimary visual and somatosensory areas intersected thalamic afferents from auditory, visual, and somatosensory nuclei. Furthermore, afferents from the caudal insular cortex and the parvicellular part of the ventral posterior thalamic nucleus, which are associated with visceral processing, converged to the rostroventral end of the auditory TRN. The results suggest that the auditory TRN consists of anatomical nodes that mediate tonotopic and/or cross-modal modulation of auditory and other sensory processing in the loop connectivity between the cortex and thalamus.

The deep cortical tissue in the caudal portion of the anterior ectosylvian sulcus (AES) of cats anesthetized with alpha-chloralose was explored to examine the sensory response properties of neurons in this area, which is known to contain an area evoking eye movement. Of 873 neurons isolated, 262 (30.0%) were multimodal, i.e. responsive to two or more of the stimulus modalities of visual, auditory, or somatic. The ratio of multimodal neurons to total neurons in the eye-movement-evoking area was significantly larger than this ratio in other areas; 79 (39.5%) of 200 neurons in the eye-movement-evoking area were multimodal, while 183 (27.2%) of 673 neurons in other areas were multimodal. Neuronal minimal latency in response to visual stimulation was widely and bimodally distributed, showing two peaks at 35 ms and 60 ms, whereas latencies to auditory and somatic stimulation were narrowly distributed, with one peak at 10 ms and 15 ms, respectively. There was no remarkable difference either between unimodal neurons and multimodal neurons or between the neurons in the eye-movement-evoking area and those in other areas in distribution of latency. That there was a significant difference in ratio of multimodal to total neurons between the eye movement area and other areas suggests that some convergence or integration of different kinds of sensory input in relation to eye movement might be carried out in the caudal portion of the AES.

The thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) is a crucial anatomical node of thalamocortical connectivity for sensory processing. In the rat auditory system, we determined features of thalamic projections to the TRN, using juxtacellular recording and labeling techniques. Two types of auditory cells (short latency, SL, and long latency, LL), exhibiting unit discharges to noise burst stimuli (duration, 100 ms) with short (50 ms) and long (100 ms) response latencies, were obtained from the ventral division of the medial geniculate nucleus (MGV). Both SL and LL cells had a propensity to exhibit reverberatory discharges in response to sound stimuli. The primary discharges of SL cells were mostly single spikes while the non-primary discharges of SL cells and the whole discharges of LL cells were mostly burst spikes. SL cells sent topographic projections to the TRN along the dorsoventral and rostrocaudal neural axes while LL cells only along the rostrocaudal axis. As tonotopy-related cortical projections to the TRN are topographic primarily along the dorsoventral extent of the TRN and the MGV is tonotopically organized along the dorsoventral axis, SL cells, directly activated by ascending auditory inputs, may be closely involved in tonotopic thalamocortical connectivity. On the other hand, LL cells, which are suppressed by ascending inputs and could be driven to discharge by corticofugal inputs, are assumed to activate the TRN in a manner less related to tonotopic organization. There may exist heterogeneous projections from the MGV to the TRN, which, in conjunction with corticofugal connections, could constitute distinct channels of auditory processing.

We have previously shown that the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) is activated in the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) during peripheral inflammation. In the present study, the relationship between ERK signaling in the RVM and pain hypersensitivity was investigated in the rat. Microinjection of U0126, a mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase inhibitor, into the RVM decreased phosphorylated ERK at 7 h after complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) injection into the hindpaw. The U0126 microinjection also attenuated thermal hyperalgesia in the ipsilateral hindpaw at 24 h after CFA injection. The ipsilateral paw withdrawal latency in the U0126 group (67.9% ± 5.3% vs. baseline, n = 7) was significantly longer than that in the control group (52.0% ± 3.6% vs. baseline, n = 8). These findings suggest that activation of ERK in the RVM contributes to thermal hyperalgesia during peripheral inflammation.

In the present study, the activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) in the rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) following the injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) into the rat hindpaw was examined in order to clarify the mechanisms underlying the dynamic changes in the descending pain modulatory system after peripheral inflammation. Phospho-p38 MAPK-immunoreactive (p-p38 MAPK-IR) neurons were observed in the nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) and nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis pars alpha (GiA). Inflammation induced the activation of p38 MAPK in the RVM, with a peak at 30 min after the injection of CFA into the hindpaw, which lasted for 1 h. The rat auditory cortex is made up of multiple auditory fields. A precise correlation between anatomical and physiological areal extents of auditory fields, however, is not yet fully established, mainly because non-primary auditory fields remain undetermined. In the present study, based on thalamocortical connection, electrical stimulation and auditory response, we delineated a non-primary auditory field in the cortical region ventral to the primary auditory area and anterior auditory field. We designated it as "ventral" area after its relative location. At first, based on anterograde labeling of thalamocortical projection with biocytin, ventral auditory area was delineated as a main cortical terminal field of thalamic afferents that arise from the dorsal division of the medial geniculate body. Cortical terminal field (ventral auditory area) extended into the ventral margin of temporal cortex area 1 (Te1) and the dorsal part of temporal cortex area 3, ventral (Te3V), from 3.2-4.6 mm posterior to bregma. Electrical stimulation of the dorsal division of the medial geniculate body; evoked epicortical field potentials confined to the comparable cortical region. On the basis of epicortical field potentials evoked by pure tones, best frequencies were further estimated at and around the cortical region where electrical stimulation of the dorsal division of the medial geniculate body evoked field potentials. Ventral auditory area was found to represent frequencies primarily below 15 kHz, which contrasts with our previous finding that the posterodorsal area, the other major recipient of the dorsal division of the medial geniculate body; projection, represents primarily high frequencies (>15 kHz). The ventral auditory area, as the other main cortical region that would relay auditory input from the dorsal division of the medial geniculate body to higher cortical information processing, could serve an important extralemniscal function in tandem with the posterodorsal area. The results provide insight into structural and functional organization of the rat auditory cortex.

Effects of persistent temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inflammation on nociceptive responses of remote bodily areas of the rat were investigated. Monoarthritis of the TMJ region was evoked by the injection of complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) into the left TMJ region. Rats without injection of CFA into the TMJ region served as controls (non-CFA group). Time spent on licking behavior evoked by the injection of formalin into the left hindpaw and withdrawal thresholds of mechanical stimulation to both sides of the hindpaw were measured during TMJ inflammation for 3 weeks. Furthermore, expression of Fos protein in the lumbar dorsal horn was immunohistochemically investigated following the injection of formalin into the hindpaw during TMJ inflammation. Formalin-evoked nocifensive behavioral activities were significantly enhanced at 10 and 14 days after CFA injection in the late phase, while the withdrawal threshold to mechanical stimulation was significantly decreased bilaterally at 8, 10 and 14 days after CFA injection. Both formalin-evoked licking behavior and mechanical withdrawal thresholds to bilateral hindpaw at 21 days after CFA injection were similar to those in the non-CFA group. The number of Fos-positive neurons in the lumbar dorsal horn ipsilateral to the formalin injection at 1 and 7 days after CFA injection into the TMJ were similar to those in the non-CFA group; however, those were significantly increased in the laminae I–II and V–VI of the lumbar dorsal horn at 14 days after CFA injection. TMJ inflammation for 7 and 14 days alone produced a small number of Fos-expressing neurons in the lumbar dorsal horn. These results provide evidence that persistent unilateral inflammation of the TMJ region causes an increase in behavioral hyperalgesia of the hindpaw, which is attributed to the modulation of neural activities, in part, in the lumbar dorsal horn, likely mediated by supraspinal neural mechanisms.

The functional significance of parallel and redundant information processing by multiple cortical auditory fields remains elusive. A possible function is that they may exert distinct corticofugal modulations on thalamic information processing through their parallel connections with the medial geniculate body and thalamic reticular nucleus. To reveal the anatomical framework for this function, we examined corticothalamic projections of tonotopically comparable subfields in the primary and non-primary areas in the rat auditory cortex. Biocytin was injected in and around cortical area Te1 after determining best frequency at the injection site on the basis of epicortical field potentials evoked by pure tones. The rostral part of area Te1 (primary auditory area) and area temporal cortex, area 2, dorsal (Te2D) (posterodorsal auditory area) dorsal to the caudal end of area Te1, which both exhibited high best frequencies, projected to the ventral zone of the ventral division of the medial geniculate body. The caudal end of area Te1 (auditory area) and the rostroventral part of area Te1 (a part of anterior auditory field), which both exhibited low best frequencies, projected to the dorsal zone of the ventral division of the medial geniculate body. In contrast to the similar topography in the projections to the ventral division of the medial geniculate body, collateral projections to the thalamic reticular nucleus terminated in the opposite dorsal and ventral zones of the lateral and middle tiers of the nucleus in each pair of the tonotopically comparable cortical subfields. In addition, the projections of the non-primary cortical subfields further arborized in the medial tier of the thalamic reticular nucleus. The results suggest that tonotopically comparable primary and non-primary subfields in the auditory cortex provide corticofugal excitatory effects to the same part of the ventral division of the medial geniculate body. On the other hand, corticofugal inhibition via the thalamic reticular nucleus may operate in different parts of the ventral division of the medial geniculate body or different thalamic nuclei. The primary and non-primary cortical auditory areas are presumed to subserve distinct gating functions for auditory attention.

The role of central serotonin 3 receptors on neural activities recorded from superficial laminae of trigeminal subnucleus caudalis/upper cervical spinal cord junction region was investigated using rats with (Complete Freund's Adjuvant day 7 group) or without (non-Complete Freund's Adjuvant group) persistent temporomandibular joint inflammation evoked by Complete Freund's Adjuvant for 7 days. We identified two types of units, Deep-wide dynamic range units and Skin-wide dynamic range units from extracellular recordings. Deep-wide dynamic range units have mechanoreceptive fields in the deep craniofacial tissues including masseter muscle but do not have cutaneous mechanoreceptive fields. Deep-wide dynamic range unit discharges evoked by the formalin injection into masseter muscle were significantly enhanced in the late phase in Complete Freund's Adjuvant day 7 group. Discharges of Skin-wide dynamic range units evoked by the noxious pinch stimulation to facial skin in Complete Freund's Adjuvant day 7 group were significantly enhanced compared with those in non-Complete Freund's Adjuvant group. Topical administration of central serotonin 3 receptor antagonist, tropisetron, onto trigeminal subnucleus caudalis/upper cervical spinal cord junction region significantly reduced both formalin-evoked Deep-wide dynamic range unit and pinch-evoked Skin-wide dynamic range unit discharges in non-Complete Freund's Adjuvant and Complete Freund's Adjuvant day 7 groups significantly. The inhibitory effects of tropisetron on pinch-evoked Skin-wide dynamic range unit discharges were prolonged in Complete Freund's Adjuvant day 7 group compared with those in non-Complete Freund's Adjuvant group. The role of central serotonin 3 receptors in trigeminal subnucleus caudalis/upper cervical spinal cord junction region was also tested by orofacial formalin test in Complete Freund's Adjuvant day 7 group. Intracisternal administration of tropisetron decreased the orofacial nocifensive behavior in the late phase evoked by the injection of formalin into the masseter muscle. These results suggest that central serotonin 3 receptors in trigeminal subnucleus caudalis/upper cervical spinal cord junction region are involved in mediating pronociceptive effects in both superficial and deep craniofacial tissues nociception during persistent temporomandibular joint inflammation.

Auditory neurons have been identified in the caudoventral part of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN). We examined the acoustic input to single cells in the rostrodorsal part of the TRN.In alpha-chloralose-anesthetized cats, we extracellularly recorded the responses of single neurons in the rostral TRN to acoustic and light stimuli. Next, to examine efferent projections of auditory neurons in the rostral TRN, we injected wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) into other thalamic nuclei where auditory neurons were detected, including the lateral posterior nucleus (LP), the lateral medial and suprageniculate nuclei and the centromedian nucleus. Finally, intracortical microstimulation of the LP was performed to demonstrate antidromic activation of the auditory neurons in the rostral TRN.In the rostral TRN, 2 types of response to auditory stimuli were observed: brief, short-latency bursts (13-20 ms; mean 16.5 ms) and longer bursts with a long latency (38.8-50 ms; mean 44.8 ms). Injection of WGA-HRP into the medial LP labeled cells only in the rostrodorsal TRN, while extending the injection to the other nuclei labeled cells in the rostrodorsal and rostrolateral parts of the nucleus. Auditory neurons in the rostral TRN were activated antidromically by microstimulation of auditory neurons in the LP, with a latency of 1.2 ms.These results strongly suggest that auditory neurons in the rostrodorsal TRN project to auditory neurons in the LP. The rostral auditory TRN may be involved in transmission of auditory information via the non-specific association system of the thalamus.

We examined efferent connections of the cortical auditory field that receives thalamic afferents specifically from the suprageniculate nucleus (SG) and the dorsal division (MGD) of the medial geniculate body (MG) in the rat [Neuroscience 117 (2003) 1003]. The examined cortical region was adjacent to the caudodorsal border (4.8-7.0 mm posterior to bregma) of the primary auditory area (area Te1) and exhibited relatively late auditory response and high best frequency, compared with the caudal end of area Te1. On the basis of the location and auditory response property, the cortical region is considered identical to "posterodorsal" auditory area (PD). Injections of biocytin in PD revealed characteristic projections, which terminated in cortical areas and subcortical structures that play pivotal roles in directed attention and space processing. The most noticeable cortical terminal field appeared as dense plexuses of axons in area Oc2M, the posterior parietal cortex. Small terminal fields were scattered in area frontal cortex, area 2 that comprises the frontal eye field. The subcortical terminal fields were observed in the pontine nucleus, the nucleus of the brachium inferior colliculus, and the intermediate and deep layers of the superior colliculus. Corticostriatal projections targeted two discrete regions of the caudate putamen: the top of the middle part and the caudal end. It is noteworthy that the inferior colliculus and amygdala virtually received no projection. Corticothalamic projections terminated in the MGD, the SG, the ventral zone of the ventral division of the MG, the ventral margin of the lateral posterior nucleus (LP), and the caudodorsal part of the posterior thalamic nuclear group (Po). Large terminals were found in the MGD, SG, LP and Po besides small terminals, the major component of labeling. The results suggest that PD is an auditory area that plays an important role in spatial processing linked to directed attention and motor function. The results extend to the rat findings from nonhuman primates suggesting the existence of a posterodorsal processing stream for auditory spatial perception.
