Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to develop gather data on the rheological and mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing varying percentages of waste glass aggregate (WGA). In this current experiment, the coarse aggregate was substituted by adding WGA, with replacement percentages of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight being investigated. The rheological properties of SCC were performed to explore the consequence of WGA using various methods, including the J-ring, slump flow, L-box, and V-funnel. In contrast, the compressive, flexural, modulus of elasticity, and stress-strain responses of hardened concrete were assessed in this study. The results of the fresh concrete tests revealed that the substitution of an optimal level of waste glass in SCC provides adequate implementation in flowability, passing ability, and viscosity behaviors. Besides, hardened characteristics were shown to have a steady decrease in strength with increasing WGA content in the concrete mixtures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. Investigating the combined effect of aggregate size and sulphate attack on producing sustainable recycled aggregate concrete

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study investigates the performance of recycled aggregate concrete incorporating different sizes and concentrations of coarse aggregate under sodium sulphate and normal water curing. Ten mixes were produced, having two control mixes of 12 to 20 mm and 5 to 12 mm coarse aggregate size. The rest of the mixes have supplementary cementitious material with 0%, 15%, 30%, and 45% substitution of respective sizes normal aggregate by recycled aggregate. The fresh recycled aggregate concrete mixes were assessed through the slump, ball penetration, and compacting factor test, which exhibited a falling trend with the percentage increase of recycled aggregate. Moreover, compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity drop with the percentage of RCA increases at 7, 28, and 91-days normal curing and 5% Na2SO4solution curing at 91 days. The compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity of 5-12 mm coarse aggregate concrete showed improvement over 12–20 mm coarse aggregate concrete of the same replacement for both curing. However, 5% Na2SO4solution curing specimens exhibit around 5–11% decrease in compressive strength and higher penetration depth than normal curing . Furthermore, the outer face of the silica fume included samples have received fewer white patches after sodium sulphate immersion.

Abstract

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) is a revolutionary breakthrough in the history of structural engineering innovation due to its unique characteristics to strengthen and repair the deficient reinforced concrete structures. This paper aimed at evaluating the flexural characteristics of jute fiber reinforced polymer (JFRP) bonded reinforced concrete beams. The influence of the test variables comprised of strengthening scheme and corrosion rate for reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The experimental study comprised of casting six RC beams and testing them in flexure loading. To determine the flexural response of RC beams, three beams were fabricated with JFRP laminate having a level of corrosion of 0%, 7.5%, and 15%, whereas three beams were designated as control beams having same corrosion levels with no JFRP. Test results indicated that all JFRP strengthened beams exhibited increased ultimate load, yield load, first cracking load, and lower ductility index compared to control beams. The results also revealed that JFRP strengthening technique improved the flexural strength of the corroded beams efficiently, albeit the ultimate load of the beams diminished with higher corrosion level. Analytical calculations were carried out for quantifying the flexural characteristics and mass loss of beams which provided a good agreement with the test results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
