Lactococcus garvieae is the etiological agent of lactococcosis, an emerging disease which affects several fish species and causes important economic losses both in marine and freshwater aquaculture. Lactococcosis usually happens when water temperature increases over 15°C during the year. Normally, it causes a hyperacute and haemorrhagic septicemia in fish. This paper presents a procedure for producing experimental vaccine for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) lactococcosis including aspects such as pathogen characterization, pathogenicity, mass cultivation, safety, potency and field trial tests for immersion use. In the potency test, after challenging the vaccinated fish with live pathogenic bacteria (1×107 bacteria per milliliter of immersing solution) and observing for 72 hours thereafter, 10% of fish died while the control group showed 60% mortality within the observation time. In the field trial from vaccination time onward till marketing of the fish, those mortalities that occurred in groups of vaccinated and non-vaccinated fish were recorded. Total death occurred in the vaccinated group was 11%, while in non vaccinated group this number was approaching 23%. This observation indicates a 50% reduction in mortality in the vaccinated group. This is the first report on experimental vaccine against lactococcosis in fish that is produced and tested in Iran.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are the prosperous group of NPs with the capability to apply as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Radiolabeling of targeted SPIONs with positron emitters can develop dual positron emission tomography (PET)/MRI agents to achieve better diagnosis of clinical conditions.Methods: In this work, N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan (TMC)-coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) conjugated to S-2-(4-isothiocyanatobenzyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane tetraacetic acid (DOTA) as a radioisotope chelator and bombesin (BN) as a targeting peptide (DOTA–BN–TMC–MNPs) were prepared and validated using fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) tests. Final NPs were radiolabeled with gallium-68 (68Ga) and evaluated in vitro and in vivo as a potential PET/MRI probe for breast cancer (BC) detection.Results: The DOTA–BN–TMC–MNPs with a particle size between 20 and 30 nm were efficiently labeled with 68Ga (radiochemical purity higher than 98% using thin layer chromatography (TLC)). The radiolabeled NPs showed insignificant toxicity (>74% cell viability) and high affinity (IC50=8.79 µg/mL) for the gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP)-avid BC T-47D cells using competitive binding assay against 99mTc–hydrazinonicotinamide (HYNIC)–gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)–BN (7–14). PET and MRI showed visible uptake of NPs by T-47D tumors in xenograft mouse models.Conclusion: 68Ga–DOTA–BN–TMC–MNPs could be a potential diagnostic probe to detect BC using PET/MRI technique. BACKGROUND Increases in aminotransferases (transaminitis) are potential major adverse reactions seen with long-term use of methotrexate (MTX). The aim of this study, therefore was to evaluate the incidence of MTX induced hepatotoxicity and its risk factors among rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. METHODS This retrospective study described 286 patients with RA who received ≥ 7.5 mg MTX weekly in an academic rheumatology clinic over a 15 year period. The results of serial liver function tests, concurrent MTX dose, cumulative dose and use of hepatotoxic drugs were collected and statistically analyzed according to a consecutive elevation in aminotransferases which occurred over at least a two week interval. RESULTS During the study period, 286 patients (84.4% female) with mean age of 46.6±12.7 years (18-84 years) were enrolled. Transaminitis occurred among 23.7% of patients (incidence: 6.9 per 100 person-years) during 40.5±34.6 month's exposure to MTX (989.6 person-years). The time difference between onset of therapy and occurrence of transaminitis was 22.1±22.0 months. The only significant factor related to the occurrence of transaminitis was the duration of MTX therapy. Background and Aim: Tobacco use in various ways such as cigarettes, hookahs, and nas is one of the most important and preventable factors in illness, disability and premature death in the world. Considering the importance of hookah consumption and its impact on the health of people in the community, studies in this regard will be significant. In this regard, the aim of present study was to determine the levels of heavy metals (zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg)) in the tobacco and hookah water used in cafes in Sanandaj city in 2017. Material and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical (cross sectional) study, two popular and common brands of hookah tobacco were selected in Sanandaj (Crystal and Palm), and each of the brands was evaluated for three flavors (dassib, lemon, and mint). A total of 36 tobacco samples (before and after use) and 36 samples of water (before and after use) were investigated. The samples were prepared by acid digestion and finally, the concentrations of metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, As, and Hg) was measured by atomic absorption. Results: The results of this study showed that the highest and lowest concentrations of metals were related to Zn (11/05 µg/g) and As (1/35 µg/g) respectively. In general, according to the results, the order of the metals was Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd > As. The results showed that there was a significant difference between Pb in burnt and unburned tobacco, and Pb in burnt tobacco is more than unburned tobacco. In contrast, no difference in the mean of the other metals before and after use has not been made. The results of comparison of metals before and after the use of hookahs in hookah water showed that there was a significant difference in Cu, Zn, and Pb. Moreover, there is no significant difference between the two brands in terms of metals as well as the different taste of the tobacco (p> 0/05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the concentration of metals in tobacco samples distributed in Sanandaj was higher than the standards of WHO. The values indicated were high levels of metals in aromatic tobacco samples, which also require more attention to protect people's health and ways to reduce tobacco use.

The deteriorating effects of greenhouse gases resulting from the use of fossil fuels have led to increased public attention to renewable energy sources, with wind energy being a particularly favored option. This prompted the development of various wind turbine types' efficiency. This study intends to explore the influence of key design parameters consisting of the number of blades, blade chord length, helical angle, and J-shaped blade on the performance and selfstarting ability of a Darrieus VAWT. Furthermore, implementing an efficient optimization model to obtain maximum power based on the numerical findings. To achieve this, two different numerical modeling approaches, namely Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Double Multi-Streamtube (DMST), have been applied. The results indicated that employing a higher blade number and chord length enhances the starting capability of the turbine. Moreover, increasing the helical angle to 60° reduces the generated torque fluctuations. Inspired by the design of the Savonius turbine, the implementation of a J-shaped airfoil boosted the Cp at low TSR. Finally, the Kriging optimization method has been employed to optimize the design parameters explored through CFD analysis. The outcomes showed that the optimum configuration of the examined Darrieus VAWT comprises a 3-bladed rotor with a blade chord length of 0.04 m and helical angle of 0° and a J-shaped blade length ratio of 0.68. Energy demand in Iran is increasing for many reasons including low price, large population, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth. Its trend shows that this situation cannot continue for many years and thus, it needs reviewing in energy policy in Iran. The aim of this paper is to review the whole energy system of Iran and it possible future and to offer some policies on solving current and future problems. First of all, this study investigates the growing trend of some parameters like GDP, electricity price, population, CO2 emission, and electricity consumption in eight years. After that, calculating the price of electricity generated in Iran under three different circumstances, this study can investigate the electricity and natural gas trade according to their prices. Studying the effects of renewable energy on CO2 emission reduction, subsidy reduction, and water saving prompted this study to prepare and offer relevant policies. Ultimately, results reveal that energy saving in Iran is not held in high regard and two policies are offered accordingly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Silicon hydrogel bandage contact lenses are used to enhance epithelial healing, control surface-generated pain, and prevent epithelial erosions after refractive surgery. Considering the importance of faster reepithelialization in preventing complications of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and the fact that the features and specifications of these commercially-available lenses are different and their performance as a postoperative bandage lenses would be different also, the aim of this study was comparison the efficacy of senofilcon A and lotrafilcon A after PRK. Methods: In this prospective study, 44 patients with PRK in both eyes randomly received a silicon hydrogel contact lens of senofilcon A in one eye and lotrafilcon A in other eye. Then the epithelial defect size, visual acuity and subjective level of pain and discomfort were measured for both eyes and compared on day 1, 3 and 5 postoperatively. Results: There was no statistical difference in rate of reepithelialization between senofilcon A and lotrafilcon A (P > 0.05). The mean pain and discomfort index was significantly lower in eyes with senofilcon A (P < 0.05). The mean subjective visual scores were similar with both bandage contact lenses (BCLs) (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Silicon hydrogel BCLs are safe and effective for corneal reepithelialization and have great therapeutic outcome on visual outcomes after PRK. But, senofilcon A had better effect on postoperative pain and discomfort which made it superior than lotrafilcon A. However for more conclusive results, it is recommended to study larger sample size with evaluation the possible factors responsible for the obtained findings regarding postoperative pain and discomfort.

For statistical analysis of datas, the statistical product and service solution (SPSS version 16) program was used and unvariate and multivariate discriminant function analysis were performed to indicate the efficiency of each variable for sex determination."n"nResults: The mean of patella height in male was 4.46 cm and in female was 3.87, the mean of patella width in male was 4.60 and in female was 4.03cm and the mean of patella thickness in male was 2.25 and in female was 2.07cm. Among these measurements maximal width with average accurancy of 94% and then maximal height with 91% and finally maximal thickness with 71.6-73.1% respectively were better variables for sex determination. Also in multivariate discriminant analysis, combination of all three measurements with average accuracy of 94% was the best function for sex determination."n"nConclusion: The results of this study revealed that we can determine sex with high confidence in situations such as explosions, air crashes and etc, just by using the patella measurement.

Isolated hematuria and its association with proteinuria, and urinary cast and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease activity, and decision for renal biopsy is a dilemma for physician in SLE patients. The aim of this study was to investigate 1. whether isolated hematuria is associated with active SLE, 2. to determine duration between hematuria and proteinuria and urinary cast, and 3. to determine renal histological type in SLE patients with isolated hematuria. All episodes of isolated hematuria between 1981 and 1997 were identified from Lupus Unit, Rheumatology Research Center database. Isolated hematuria was defined as >5 RBC/hpf in the absence of urinary infection and other renal manifestations. Relation of hematuria was assessed with proteinuria and urinary cast and SLE disease activity. Needle renal biopsy was done in 19 SLE patents with isolated hematuria. 4.42% (31/700) of our cohort had at least one episode of isolated hematuria. Out of 31 patients in whom the isolated hematuria was the first documented renal manifestation, 11 patients (35.48%) developed another renal manifestation (25.8% proteinuria and 9.67% casts). 54.54% (6/11) of patients developed proteinuria and urinary cast within 3 months. The mean time for development of a second renal manifestation for the patients with isolated hematuria was 19.9 months. Renal needle biopsy was performed for 19 patients (5.78% type IV, 63.15% type III and 21.50% type II). The results of the present study indicate that isolated hematuria is not rare in SLE patients. Also, there was no significant relationship between isolated hematuria and anti ds-DNA, C3, C4 and major organ involvement in patients with SLE. Our study suggests that SLE patients who have isolated hematuria should undergo renal biopsy and that isolated hematuria should be considered a manifestation of active renal SLE.

Background: The value of the mandibulo-canine index (MCI) in gender identification has been proved in some studies in various countries. The goal of our study was to determine the utility of MCI in gender identification in Iran.Methods: This descriptional survey was performed on a group of 18- to 25-year-old Iranian students at the Tehran University of Medical Science. We included 50 males and 50 females that were selected using a single sampling method. Data were statistically analyzed by SPSS (v. 13) and t-test.Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the mean ages of the two groups. Among men, the MCI ranged from 0.209 to 0.293, with a mean of 0.252. Among women, the MCI ranged from 0.202 to 0.276, with a mean of 0.245. There was significant statistical difference between the two means, (0.007; P value = 0.04). The standard MCI of 0.247 was compared to that of each gender, after which no significant statistical difference was found between the two genders (P value = 0.8). Conclusions: Despite some studies performed in other countries displaying the usefulness of MCI in sex determination, our data did not support this conclusion. Perhaps this difference can be explained because of the variety ethnic groups from various cities of Iran represented in this research had some influence on the results.

In this research Quil-A and levamisole as immunostimulants were used both by immersion route (Quil-A, 40 mg/L and levamisole, 50 mg/L) and oral route (Quil-A 5, 10 mg and levamisole 20, 40mg) in common carp (Cyprinus carpio)(mean weight ~80g) daily for 20 days. After twenty days of treatment with immunostimulants, stained heat killed Candida albicans and Bacillus cereus were injected intravenously via caudal vein. Two hours after injection, blood and kidney tissue samples were collected. Phagocytosis rate of blood and kidney smears were studied using Gimsa staining. Results showed that phagocytosis of Candida albicans cells by blood leukocytes in immersion groups into 40mg/L and 50 mg/L levamisole and orally used 5 and 10 mg Quil-A groups were significantly increased in comparison with the control group. While fish given 20 mg levamisole orally did not show a significant difference with control group and phagocytosis in 40mg levamisole by oral administration was suppressed as showed significant difference with control and other groups. Phagocytosis of Bacillus cereus cells showed similar results to the Candida albicans cells. Phagocytosis rate in kidney tissue was also stimulated in all groups except for 20 and 40mg levamisole groups presumably due to immunosuppressive effect of high levamisole rate.
