Meteorological droughts in Malaysia have significantly impacted critical sectors such as agriculture, water resources, health, the environment, tourism and various socio‐economic sectors, affecting the population's livelihood and well‐being. This study analyses drought characteristics over a 39‐year period, from 1982 to 2021, using the Standardised Precipitation Index (SPI) derived from 5‐km resolution Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS). The droughts were assessed on 3‐, 6‐, 9‐ and 12‐month timescales to investigate spatio‐temporal variations in characteristics such as frequency, duration, peak, severity and intensity. The study also provides an in‐depth analysis of large‐scale drought modulation, particularly associated with the El Niño phenomenon and its teleconnection in the Maritime Continent. Depending on the location and timescale, the number of meteorological drought occurrences varied from 10 to 22 for the 3‐month timescale and 4 to 14 for the 12‐month timescale. Generally, as the timescale of a drought increases, the peak intensity decreases, while the duration and severity increase. Additionally, drought intensity decreases over longer timescales. These characteristics show significant spatial variations. Results indicate that meteorological droughts in Malaysia were almost entirely modulated by the El Niño phenomenon through its induced teleconnection over the Maritime Continent. Drought characteristics exhibit a strong seasonality linked to changes in the Walker circulation and the strengthening and weakening of anticyclonic circulations associated with Rossby waves induced by heating in the Pacific Ocean. Very strong El Niño events had the most significant influence on the droughts. The positive Indian Ocean Dipole (pIOD) strengthened the effects of El Niño but it itself had no significant influence on the droughts. In most regions, there were no significant trends in the characteristics of meteorological droughts. However, in northeast Peninsular Malaysia and some scattered areas along the west coast of the peninsula, significant trends are observed in peak, duration and severity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A coastal area is an area that is very exposed to sea level changes for a long period, especially during the Holocene. Three marine sediment cores (TRC 3 and TER16-GC13C) in the offshore area were analysed for radiocarbon (14C) and some geochemical elements (Na, Al, Ca, Fe, Li, Pb, Zn, and Ba) in response to the terrigenous-and marine-originated sediment changes of in East Coast Peninsula Malaysia (ECPM) during the Holocene epoch. Across three Holocene stages, geochemical elements show a distinct temporal pattern. The average concentrations of the studied metals were in decreasing order as follows: Al > Na > Ca > Fe > Pb > Zn > Li > Ba. Dominant terrigenous/marine origin was captured by the ratio Ca/Al and Ca/Fe in the early Holocene/late Holocene. The present study suggests that sea level transgression is the primary factor controlling the shifting of terrigenous- and marine-originated sediments in the ECPM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluates the ability of Earth System Models (ESMs) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) to simulate biogeochemical variables in the southern South China Sea (SCS). The analysis focuses on key biogeochemical variables: chlorophyll, phytoplankton, nitrate, and oxygen based on their availability in the selected models at annual and seasonal scales. The models' performance is assessed against Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) data using statistical metrics such as the Taylor diagram and Taylor skill score. The results show that the models generally capture the observed spatial patterns of surface biogeochemical variables. However, they exhibit varying degrees of overestimation or underestimation in their quantitative measures. Specifically, their mean bias error ranges from -0.02 to +2.5 mg m -3 for chlorophyll, -0.5 to +1 mmol m -3 for phytoplankton, -0.1 to +1.3 mmol m -3 for nitrate, and -2 to +2.5 mmol m -3 for oxygen. The performance of the models is also influenced by the season, with some models showing better performance during June, July, and August than December, January, and February. Overall, the top five best-performing models for biogeochemical variables are MIROC-ES2H, GFDL-ESM4, CanESM5-CanOE, MPI-ESM1-2-LR, and NorESM2-LM. The findings of this study have implications for researchers and end users of the datasets, providing guidance for model improvement and understanding the impacts of climate change on the southern SCS ecosystem. The Eastern Indian Ocean (EIO) is one of the eastern boundary areas, which control currents circulation and atmospheric dynamics. This research mainly aimed to identify and analyze the water mass transformation in the EIO. The investigated physical properties of the ocean are the temperature, salinity, seasonal temperature–salinity, and water column stability. An extensive amount of in situ data measurements from 1950 to 2018 was downloaded from the global datasets inventory. The visualization and analysis of the data were defined in monthly spatial and vertical profiles. The result showed the mixed layer is shallower during the northwest monsoon relative to the southwest monsoon. The surface water in the EIO is documented to be warmer due to the interaction with the atmosphere. Furthermore, low-salinity surface water around the Java Seas area is caused by a mixing with fresh water from the eastern Indonesia rivers. The data also confirmed that, at latitude 16° S, the maximum salinity occurred at a depth between 150 and 350 m. There are ten types of water masses found in the EIO, which originate from several regions, including the Indonesia Seas, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Antarctic. During the northwest and southeast monsoons, a stable layer is found at a depth of 40 to 150 m and 80 to 150 m, respectively. For further research, it is recommended to focus on the coastal region, particularly the Timor Sea and Northwestern Australia, to investigate the dynamics between the Indonesian Throughflow, Holloway Currents, and Leeuwin Currents. Additionally, deep water observations below 800 m are crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the oceanographic variability in the deep layers of the EIO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
