Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether primary tumor localization may be a risk factor for relapse and survival in seminomatous germ cell tumors (GCT) patients. Methods: In our study, 612 seminomatous GCT patients diagnosed in 22 centers between 01.01.1989 and 03.02.2019 were retrospectively evaluated. Patient interview information, patient files and electronic system data were used for the study. Results: The primary tumor was localized in the right testis in 305 (49.9%) patients and in 307 (50.1%) in the left testis. Mean age of the patients was 36 years (range 16-85±10.4). The median follow-up period was 47 months (1-298). Recurrence was observed in 78 (12.7%) patients and 29 (4.7%) died during the follow-up period. Four-year overall survival (OS) was 95.4% and 4-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 84.5%. The relationship between localization and relapse was significant in 197 patients with stage 2 and stage 3 (p=0.003). In this patient group, 41 (20.8%) relapses were observed. Thirty (73.2%) of the relapses were in the right testis and 11 (26.8%) in the left testis. Four-year OS was 92.1% in patients with right tumor; and 98.7% in patients with left tumor (p=0.007). When 612 patients were evaluated with a mean follow-up of 4 years, there was a 6.6% survival advantage in patients with left testicular tumor and this difference was significant (p=0.007). Conclusion: Survival rates of patients with primary right testicular localization were worse compared with left testicular localization, and relapse rates were higher in stage 2 and 3 patients with right testicular localization. © 2020 Zerbinis Publications. 19. ALKALINE HYDROLYSIS OF SWINE MORTALITIES AND USING HYDROLYSATES TO GROW LETTUCE HYDROPONICALLY.

Abstract

Animal mortality management is an essential part of livestock production. Choosing a proper method to handle mortalities is essential for preventing the spread of animal diseases and maintaining the sustainability of livestock facilities. The objectives of this study were (1) to test the efficacy of alkaline hydrolysis at ambient conditions to dispose of piglet mortalities, and (2) to demonstrate if the hydrolysates of the alkaline hydrolysis process could be used to grow lettuce hydroponically. Three alkaline concentrations (1M, 2M, and 4M) were tested to hydrolyze piglet mortalities. The pH of all alkaline solutions stayed above 12.8 for 31 days, which could eliminate all the pathogens that might concern swine producers based on previous studies. The hydrolysates were neutralized using corn silage with a pH of 3.9 ?0.2 and aerobically treated for 15 days. After aerobic treatment, mixing 20? diluted hydrolysates with 2? diluted control (commercially available fertilizer) provided the highest yields (on average, 18.2% more fresh weight compared to control). This mixture also yielded the highest chlorophyll and total soluble sugar content. We concluded that alkaline treatment of piglet mortalities at ambient temperature and pressure was feasible, and the neutralized and aerobically treated hydrolysates could be used to grow lettuce, reducing the risk of environmental releases. Abstract

Proper planning and design of transportation networks in the cities is an important subject, and the avenues, boulevards and refuges in the cities give the cities an aesthetic and functional feature as open green spaces. In addition to their aesthetic qualities, planting in urban areas also plays an important role in preventing pollution and improving air quality in the cities. In this context, the existing woody plant taxa were identified on the boulevards located in Nilufer district of Bursa in Turkey. The soil characteristics and soil heavy metal accumulations of these woody plant taxa were also determined. In the studied boulevards, there were 34 genera, 31 species, 10 subspecies and varieties belonging to 23 families. Among the total woody species gathered, 72.73% of the woody species were tree species and the rest were shrubs. The soils found on the boulevards were usually sandy and clay loam, and inadequate in terms of organic matter contents. On the other hand, the heavy metal deposits in the territories of the boulevards situated in the industrial zones were higher than those in other housing areas but below the permissible values. Incontinentia pigmenti with ocular involvement: two cases: Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is a rare, X-linked dominant disorder that presents at or soon after birth and presents with cutaneous signs and symptoms. Besides its typical skin signs presenting in all patients, central nervous system (CNS), ophthalmologic and dental involvement are encountered as well. In this report, we present two patients at the verrucous stage of IP and review the literature concerning the diagnosis and course of IP.

Abstract

Alstrom syndrome with acanthosis nigricans: a case report and literature review: Alstrom syndrome (AS) is a very rare autosomal recessively inherited disorder that can lead to infantile-onset dilated cardiomyopathy, blindness, hearing impairment, obesity, diabetes, hepatic and renal dysfunction. AS is caused by mutations in the ALMS I gene, which is located at chromosome 2p13. The life span of patients with AS rarely goes beyond an age of 40 years. There is no specific therapy for AS, but early diagnosis and intervention may moderate the progression of the disease and may improve the length and quality of the patient's life. We report a 10 year-old boy presenting with Alstrom Syndrome and acanthosis nigricans.

Abstract

Mucocutaneous disorders in children with Down syndrome: case controlled study: Objective: Down's syndrome is the most frequent chromosomal anomaly that can affect a multiple organ systems, including skin. In this study, we compared the frequency of mucocutaneous disorders in children with Down's syndrome with normal children. Methods: We recruited fifty children with Down's syndrome and 50 healthy children as a control in our study. Mucocutaneous abnormalities were examined in both groups. Findings: Of 50 patients, 22 were girls and 28 were boys. The skin findings such as xerosis and Mongolian spots were the most frequently seen in the patients with Down's syndrome. Seborrheic dermatitis, cheilitis and fissured tongue were seen frequently, as well. The rare findings were plantar hyperkeratosis, alopecia areata, geographic tongue, cafe-au-lait macula, livedo reticularis, cutaneous infections, pityriasis capitis simplex, cutis marmorata, neurotic excoriation, trichotillomania, keratosis pilaris and diaper dermatitis. No mucocutaneous finding was seen in 16 patients. Abstract

Introduction: Behcet's disease (BD) is a chronic systemic disorder characterised by oral and genital ulcerative lesions, ocular and cutaneous manifestations. Cytokines are the major mediators of immunologic and inflammatory reactions. Nitric oxide is reactive nitrogen intermediate which plays a key role in pathogenesis of many inflammatory and autoimmune skin diseases. The study was conducted to determine serum interleukin-2 (IL-2), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and nitric oxide levels in relation to the pathogenesis of Behcet's disease. Materials and Methods: Serum IL-2, IL-6, and TNF-alpha levels were measured with test kits by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method, while serum nitric oxide levels were determined with a test kit by colorimetric method. Serum IL-2, IL-6, TNF-alpha and nitric oxide concentrations in 27 patients with Behcet's disease and in 16 healthy controls were determined by extrapolation from their standard curves. The significance of the mean differences between the 2 groups was assessed by the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The serum levels of IL-2, IL-6, TNF-alpha, and nitric oxide concentrations in patients with BD were significantly higher than those of the controls (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our results suggest that elevated levels of IL-2, IL-6, TNF-alpha, and nitric oxide in Behcet's disease appear to be related to the disease.

Abstract

Biofiltration is a proven method to reduce odor and gas emissions from swine buildings and manure storage units. Biofilter media selection and moisture content fluctuations significantly influence biofilter performance. The purpose of this study was to test corn cobs as an alternative biofilter media because wood chips may become less available in the future due to the spread of emerald ash borer disease. In addition, a naturally occurring adsorbent (diatomaceous shale) was tested as an additive to manage biofilter media moisture content. Five 1 m × 1 m × 1 m biofilter cells were built to treat pit fan exhaust air from a swine finishing barn. A semi-continuous sampling system was used to measure the biofilters' inlet and outlet gas concentrations. Results showed that all of the biofilters were effective, reducing H2S emissions on average by 7.3% to 50.1% and reducing NH3 emissions on average by 9.8% to 86.3%. The corn cobs were less dense and more porous than the wood chips and had lower pressure drop per unit depth. Adding 15% diatomaceous shale to the corn cobs helped manage media moisture and improved H2S and NH3 reduction efficiencies. However, after 16 months of media aging, high levels of N2O generation were observed during two sampling days. The estimated media cost with 15% diatomaceous shale was $0.52 per m³ h-1 ($0.89 per cfm) of air treated. Abstract

The objective of this study was to measure the long-term odor emissions and corresponding concentrations and emissions of 20 odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study was an add-on study to the National Air Emission Monitoring Study (NAEMS). Odor and odorous gas measurements at four NAEMS sites, including dairy barns in Wisconsin (WI5B) and Indiana (IN5B), a swine finisher barn in Indiana (IN3B), and swine gestation and farrowing barns in Iowa (IA4B), were conducted from November 2007 to May 2009. The odorous gas samples were collected every two weeks using sorbent tubes (samples were collected twice each season of the year, with the exception of spring 2009 when samples were collected three times) and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry-olfactometry (GC-MSO). In this article, we summarize the measured gas concentrations and emissions of the 20 target VOCs from each of the four sites. The average total odorous VOC concentrations for the entire sampling period were 276, 96.9, 1413 and 394 µg dsm-3 for WI5B, IN5B, IN3B, and IA4B, respectively. For the swine sites, the highest seasonal average total odorous VOC concentrations for each barn were observed during spring (1890 µg dsm-3 for IN3B and 458 µg dsm-3 for IA4B). For the dairy sites, the highest seasonal average total odorous VOC concentrations were observed in winter at WI5B (446 µg dsm-3) and in summer at IN5B (129 µg dsm-3). The average total emission rates for the 20 odorous VOCs were 290 mg h-1 AU-1 (WI5B), 36.0 mg h-1 AU-1 (IN5B), 743 mg h-1 AU-1 (IN3B), 33.9 mg h-1 AU-1 (IA4B swine gestation barns), and 91.7 mg h-1 AU-1 (IA4B swine farrowing room). The average seasonal total odorous VOC emission rates were highest during summer at WI5B (805 mg h-1 AU-1), IN5B (121 mg h-1 AU-1), and IN3B (1250 mg h-1 AU-1) and during spring at IA4B (95.8 mg h-1 AU-1). The emissions of specific VOCs varied between seasons, sites, and species.
