1. Incorporating model accuracy into gravitational-wave Bayesian inference

Abstract

Inferring the properties of colliding black holes from gravitational-wave observations is subject to systematic errors arising from modelling uncertainties. Although the accuracy of each model can be calculated through comparison to theoretical expectations from general relativity, Bayesian analyses are yet to incorporate this information. As such, a mixture model is typically used where results obtained with different gravitational-wave models are combined with either equal weight, or based on their relative Bayesian evidence. In this work we present a novel method to incorporate the accuracy of multiple models in gravitational-wave Bayesian analyses. By analysing simulated gravitational-wave signals in zero-noise, we show that our technique uses $30\%$ less computational resources, and more faithfully recovers the true parameters than existing techniques. 2. The Impact of Using Educational and Digital Games on Middle School Students Science Achievement

Abstract

Game-based learning has attracted great interest in science education as an effective way to increase student achievement. Most studies in this field have focused on digital or non-digital games. In the literature, some studies generally compare educational games with traditional teaching methods. More studies need to be conducted to compare the effects of digital and non-digital games on achievement. For this reason, the study's primary purpose is to examine the impact of different types of games, namely educational and digital games, and their combinations on students' academic achievement and views on the learning process. In this context, the researcher used three different methods to be applied to three experimental groups and one control group. The research was carried out on 77 5th-grade students studying in a public school in Turkey. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used in the quasi-experimental design. Data were obtained through the 'Human and Environment Unit Achievement Test' and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that students in the educational and digital games sections were significantly better at science achievement than students in the textbook-oriented section. No significant difference was found between the digital game-based and educational game-based students in terms of achievement. The academic achievement of the group in which these two game types were used together was higher than the others. In addition, most students were satisfied with the using educational and digital games in science lessons and found the games fun and motivating.

Abstract

Recommender systems are essential for enhancing user experiences by suggesting items based on individual preferences. However, these systems frequently face the challenge of data imbalance, characterized by a predominance of negative interactions over positive ones. This imbalance can result in biased recommendations favoring popular items. This study investigates the effectiveness of synthetic data generation in addressing data imbalances within recommender systems. Six different methods were used to generate synthetic data. Our experimental approach involved generating synthetic data using these methods and integrating the generated samples into the original dataset. Our results show that the inclusion of generated negative samples consistently improves the Area Under the Curve (AUC) scores. The significant impact of synthetic negative samples highlights the potential of data augmentation strategies to address issues of data sparsity and imbalance, ultimately leading to improved performance of recommender systems.

Abstract

This paper investigates the relation between the second-order coding rate, where the second-order turns out to be strictly larger than $\sqrt{n}$, and the mutual information as the leaked information for a fixed error probability by using wiretap codes constructed by universal$_2$ hash functions. We first generalize the upper bound on $\epsilon$-smooth max information in \cite{tyagi} and use it in our analysis where we adopt the method in \cite{hayashi-tan}, which uses universal hashing for compressing a source and making it secure from another correlated source, and apply it to the wiretap channel. We prove first- and second-order achievability results by assuming that the conjecture we state holds true.

5. Convergence of reputations under indirect reciprocity

Abstract

Previous research has shown how indirect reciprocity can promote cooperation through evolutionary game theoretic models. Most work in this field assumes a separation of time-scales: individuals' reputations equilibrate at a fast time scale for given frequencies of strategies while the strategies change slowly according to the replicator dynamics. Much of the previous research has focused on the behaviour and stability of equilibria for the replicator dynamics. Here we focus on the underlying reputational dynamics that occur on a fast time scale. We describe reputational dynamics as systems of differential equations and conduct stability analyses on their equilibria. We prove that reputations converge to a unique equilibrium for each of the five standard norms whether assessments are public or private. These results confirm a crucial but previously unconfirmed assumption underlying the theory of indirect reciprocity for the most studied set of norms.

Abstract

We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. 7. Divide and Conquer: High-Resolution Industrial Anomaly Detection via Memory Efficient Tiled Ensemble

Abstract

Industrial anomaly detection is an important task within computer vision with a wide range of practical use cases. The small size of anomalous regions in many real-world datasets necessitates processing the images at a high resolution. This frequently poses significant challenges concerning memory consumption during the model training and inference stages, leaving some existing methods impractical for widespread adoption. To overcome this challenge, we present the tiled ensemble approach, which reduces memory consumption by dividing the input images into a grid of tiles and training a dedicated model for each tile location. The tiled ensemble is compatible with any existing anomaly detection model without the need for any modification of the underlying architecture. By introducing overlapping tiles, we utilize the benefits of traditional stacking ensembles, leading to further improvements in anomaly detection capabilities beyond high resolution alone. We perform a comprehensive analysis using diverse underlying architectures, including Padim, PatchCore, FastFlow, and Reverse Distillation, on two standard anomaly detection datasets: MVTec and VisA. 8. A Survey of Four Precessing Waveform Models for Binary Black Hole Systems

Abstract

Angular momentum and spin precession are expected to be generic features of a significant fraction of binary black hole systems. As such, it is essential to have waveform models that faithfully incorporate the effects of precession. Here, we assess how well the current state of the art models achieve this for waveform strains constructed only from the $\ell=2$ multipoles.Specifically, we conduct a survey on the faithfulness of the waveform models %(approximants) \texttt{SEOBNRv5PHM}, \texttt{TEOBResumS}, \texttt{IMRPhenomTPHM}, \texttt{IMRPhenomXPHM} to the numerical relativity (NR) surrogate \texttt{NRSur7dq4} and to NR waveforms from the \texttt{SXS} catalog. The former assessment involves systems with mass ratios up to six and dimensionless spins up to 0.8. The latter employs $317$ short and $23$ long \texttt{SXS} waveforms. For all cases, we use reference inclinations of zero and $90^\circ$. We find that all four models become more faithful as the mass ratio approaches unity and when the merger-ringdown portion of the waveforms are excluded. We also uncover a correlation between the co-precessing $(2,\pm2)$ multipole mismatches and the overall strain mismatch. We additionally find that for high inclinations, precessing $(2,\pm 1)$ multipoles that are more faithful than their $(2,\pm2)$ counterparts, and comparable in magnitude, improve waveform faithfulness. As a side note, we show that use of uniformly-filled parameter spaces may lead to an overestimation of precessing model faithfulness. We conclude our survey with a parameter estimation study in which we inject two precessing \texttt{SXS} waveforms (at low and high masses) and recover the signal with \texttt{SEOBNRv5PHM}, \texttt{IMRPhenomTPHM} and \texttt{IMRPhenomXPHM}. As a bonus, we present preliminary multidimensional fits to model unfaithfulness for Bayesian model selection in parameter estimation studies.

9. AUPIMO: Redefining Visual Anomaly Detection Benchmarks with High Speed and Low Tolerance

Abstract

Recent advances in visual anomaly detection research have seen AUROC and AUPRO scores on public benchmark datasets such as MVTec and VisA converge towards perfect recall, giving the impression that these benchmarks are near-solved. However, high AUROC and AUPRO scores do not always reflect qualitative performance, which limits the validity of these metrics in real-world applications. We argue that the artificial ceiling imposed by the lack of an adequate evaluation metric restrains progression of the field, and it is crucial that we revisit the evaluation metrics used to rate our algorithms. In response, we introduce Per-IMage Overlap (PIMO), a novel metric that addresses the shortcomings of AUROC and AUPRO. PIMO retains the recall-based nature of the existing metrics but introduces two distinctions: the assignment of curves (and respective area under the curve) is per-image, and its X-axis relies solely on normal images. Measuring recall per image simplifies instance score indexing and is more robust to noisy annotations. As we show, it also accelerates computation and enables the usage of statistical tests to compare models. By imposing low tolerance for false positives on normal images, PIMO provides an enhanced model validation procedure and highlights performance variations across datasets. Our experiments demonstrate that PIMO offers practical advantages and nuanced performance insights that redefine anomaly detection benchmarks -- notably challenging the perception that MVTec AD and VisA datasets have been solved by contemporary models. 10. Optimal Fairness Scheduling for Coded Caching in Multi-AP Multi-antenna WLAN

Abstract

Coded caching (CC) schemes exploit the cumulative cache memory of network users, outperforming traditional uncoded schemes where cache contents are only used locally. Interestingly, this CC gain can also be combined with the spatial multiplexing gain of multi-antenna transmissions. In this paper, we extend the existing results of CC-aided data delivery in multi-access point (AP) wireless local area networks (WLAN) and video streaming applications by assuming multi-antenna transmitters at AP nodes. We present two distinct methods for using the extra resource that multi-antenna transmitters provide. While the first method tries to reduce the number of interference links in the network graph, the second one aims to remove inter-stream interference so that users with similar cache contents can be served simultaneously. While both methods provide increased throughput, they differ significantly in the underlying concept. Numerical simulations are used to compare the performance of different methods.

12. Examination of Pre-Service Science Teachers' Model Based-Content Knowledge and Knowledge of Students' Understanding on Chemical Bonds

Abstract

This study aims to examine pre-service science teachers' (PSTs') model-based (MB) content knowledge (CK) and knowledge of students' understanding (KSU) of chemical bonds. The participants of the study consist of 229 senior pre service science teachers. The study is a case study from qualitative research designs. The data of the study were collected by using the "Chemical Bonds Model Knowledge Test (CBMKT)". The obtained data were analyzed using the "Model Based-Content Knowledge Rubric (MB-CK Rubric)" and "Model Based-Knowledge of Students' Understanding Rubric (MB-KSU Rubric)". The findings showed that PSTs mostly have an understanding of wrong modeling and not being able to make any modeling in terms of MB-CK on chemical bonds. In addition, it has been determined that the majority of pre-service teachers have an invalid and weak level in terms of MB-KSU. 13. How Do the Images of Scientists in Secondary School Science Textbooks Affect Students' Perceptions of Scientists?

Abstract

This study aims to reveal whether there are any relations between secondary school students' perceptions of scientists and the images of scientists in secondary school science textbooks. The participants of the study were 140 secondary school students from a public school. The study is based on a qualitative research methodology. Qualitative research methods were used in the research. As a data collection tools, the Draw a Scientist Test (DAST) and secondary school science textbooks were used. The drawings obtained from the students and the images of scientists in the science textbooks were analyzed in the context of the determined themes. As a result of the study, it was determined that the students generally drew the scientist as male, thoughtful, wearing a lab coat and glasses, and young, with long and curly hair. It has been observed that scientists express their working environment as people who work alone in the laboratory and library environment. It also stands out that they benefit from computers and other technological apparatus like telescopes. It was determined that the students mostly included the drawings of Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei, and Albert Einstein at each grade level as famous scientists. It has been determined that the drawings made by the students were influenced by the images from the textbooks.

14. Effects of Computer Usage to Support 4th Grader Mathematics Learning: Comparative Study

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of using computers during mathematics lessons on the academic achievements of 4th-grade students. Additionally,this study aimed to determine the frequency of computer usage in selected countries. TIMSS 2019 4th-grade mathematics data were used in this study to determine the relationship between student mathematics achievement and the use of activities on computers during mathematics lessons, to support student learning by teachers in different countries. To identify the relationship between student mathematics achievement and the use of computers while teaching mathematics, a linear regression analysis was conducted. The results showed that the use of computers explained the high student achievements for the countries that ranked above average and the low student achievements for the countries that ranked below average. On the other hand, the relationship between computer usage in 4th-grade math education and test scores is likely to vary between the selected countries.

15. Design-Based Natural Disaster Education Practices for Primary School Teachers

Abstract

The goal of this study was to uncover primary teachers' perspectives on the use of design-based activities in disaster education and to thoroughly examine the plans. The study is designed as a case study. The participants were chosen using the purposeful sampling method. The study included 24 primary school teachers (12 male and 12 female) from various regions of the country. The data collection tools were group-prepared lesson plans and follow-up focus group interviews, which aimed to reveal their experiences and opinions on the lesson plan design process. The data was analyzed using the content analysis method. The findings revealed that the use of design-based activities in primary school, the importance of disaster education in the primary school curriculum, and the importance of disaster education awareness at the primary school level were all highlighted. The primary school teachers' lesson plans were examined, and the themes of drawing attention, design, material, career connections, and assessment-evaluation emerged. The significance of using design-based activities in primary schools, as well as the pedagogical benefits of using design-based activities in disaster education, was emphasized. Despite their abstract nature, natural disasters can be made more understandable through design-based education, particularly for primary school students who are in the concrete operational stage and have limited experience.

16. Examination of the Prediction of Flexibility for Learner Satisfaction in Online Courses

Abstract

Universities consider student satisfaction in order to improve the online education they give to students and to question the fulfillment of their responsibilities. Student satisfaction may depend not only on the educational institution but also on individual characteristics. One of these individual characteristics is flexibility, which requires multidimensional pedagogical responsibility in online learning environments. The aim of this study is to examine whether the flexibility of time management, the flexibility of teacher contact, and the flexibility of content predict online course satisfaction. In this research, the predictive relational research method was used. 1794 students participated in the research. During an academic term, students took an online Turkish II course at a university's Distance Education Research and Application Center. According to the results of the analysis, the students' three flexibility predicts their satisfaction and the model that explains their satisfaction is significant (R[superscript 2]=0.60; p<0.01). In the model, the variable that most explains student satisfaction is the flexibility of content. In addition, other variables explaining student satisfaction are students' flexibility in teacher contact and their flexibility in time management. Based on the results of the research, implications, and suggestions are presented.

LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Abstract

This survey presents the evolution of live media streaming and the technological developments behind today's IP-based low-latency live streaming systems. Live streaming primarily involves capturing, encoding, packaging and delivering real-time events such as live sports, live news, personal broadcasts and surveillance videos. Live streaming also involves concurrent streaming of linear TV programming off the satellite, cable, over-the-air or IPTV broadcast, where the programming is not necessarily a real-time event. The survey starts with a discussion on the latency and latency continuum in streaming applications. Then, it lays out the existing live streaming workflows and protocols, followed by an in-depth analysis of the latency sources in these workflows and protocols. The survey continues with the technology enablers, low-latency extensions for the popular HTTP adaptive streaming methods and enhancements for robust low-latency playback. An entire section is dedicated to the detailed summary and findings of Twitch's grand challenge on low-latency live streaming. The survey concludes with a discussion of ongoing research problems in this space.

30. Optimal Fairness Scheduling for Coded Caching in Multi-AP Wireless Local Area Networks

Abstract

Coded caching (CC) schemes exploit the cumulative cache memory of the users and simple linear coding to turn unicast traffic (individual file requests) into a multicast transmission. For the originally proposed $K$-user single-server/single shared link network model, CC yields an $O(K)$ gain with respect to conventional uncoded caching with the same per-user memory. While several information-theoretic optimality results for a variety of problems and carefully crafted network topologies have been proved, the gains and suitability of CC for practical scenarios such as content streaming over existing wireless networks have not yet been fully demonstrated. In this work, we consider CC for on-demand video streaming over WLANs where multiple users are served simultaneously by multiple spatially distributed access points (AP). Users sequentially request video ``chunks". The CC scheme operates above the IP layer, leaving the underlying standard physical layer and MAC layer untouched. The cache placement is completely asynchronous and decentralized, and the users are placed at random over the network coverage area. For such a system, we consider the region of achievable long-term average delivery rate (defined as the number of video chunks delivered per unit of time) and study the per-user rate distribution under proportional fairness scheduling. We also consider reduced complexity scheduling strategies and compare them with standard state-of-the-art techniques such as conventional (uncoded) caching and collision avoidance by allocating APs on different sub-channels (i.e., frequency reuse).

Abstract

Primary school teachers are one of the main actors in basic education. In this context, their 21st-century skills, math literacy, and financial literacy affect the quality of their teaching. This study aims at examining the relationship between pre-service primary school teachers' mathematical literacy, 21st-century skills, and financial literacy levels. This study used a relational survey model, and the study group involved a total of 276 pre-service primary school teachers. "Mathematical Literacy Self-Efficacy Scale," "21st-Century Skills Efficacy Perceptions Scale," and "Financial Literacy Attitude and Behavior Scale" were used in the study. The results showed that pre-service primary school teachers' perceptions of 21st-century skills efficiency were high, the mathematical literacy self-efficacy of the pre-service primary school teachers was above the average, and the pre-service primary school teachers' financial literacy attitude and behavior levels were low. Also, a positive and significant relationship was found between the mathematical literacy self-efficacy of pre-service primary school teachers and their perceptions of 21st-century skills efficiency. In addition, a negative and significant correlation was found between the mathematical literacy self-efficacy of the pre-service primary school teachers and their financial literacy attitudes and behaviors.

32. The Effects of Socio-Scientific STEM Activities on 21st Century Skills of Middle School Students

Abstract

In this study, the effects of the STEM activities integrated with socio-scientific issues on students' 21st century skills were investigated. In this research, nested mixed design was used. The study group of this research consisted of 16 middle school students who studied in the seventh grade of a public school in an eastern province of Turkey. Socio-scientific STEM activities were applied to the study group for 24 weeks in the first and second semesters. Students followed the engineering design stages for STEM activities. In the research, 21st Century Skills Scale, Interview Form, Perception of 21st Century Skills Form, Field Notes, and Informal Interview Notes were used as data collection tools. SPSS was used to analyze the quantitative data of the research, and content and descriptive analysis methods were used to analyze the qualitative data. The study results showed that STEM activities integrated with socio-scientific issues had a positive effect on students' 21st century skills. Also, as a result of the examination of the opinions of the students, it was determined that the application developed the "creativity and innovation" skills of the students the most. Furthermore, students' social and intercultural entrepreneurship, self-management, leadership and responsibility, critical thinking, problem solving, communication and cooperation, creativity and innovation skills were enhanced/developed at the end of the study.

Abstract

Introduction: Contrast nephropathy (CN) is characterized by oxidative stress, vasoconstriction, tubular toxicity, and hypoxia of the renal medulla. We aimed to test the therapeutic effects of an α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) agonist, GTS-21, in an experimental CN model. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 40) were divided into 4 groups: saline-treated control, GTS-21-treated control, contrast, and GTS-21-treated contrast groups. Starting on the 1st day, GTS-21 (4 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) or saline was administered twice a day for 3 days. CN was induced on the second day by intravenous injection of indomethacin (10 mg/kg), l-NAME (10 mg/kg), and a contrast agent with high osmolarity (6 mL/kg; Urografin 76%). At the 72nd hour, blood and kidney samples were obtained for the determination of biochemical, histological, and gene expression parameters. Results: Compared to those in control rats, the elevated serum BUN level in the contrast group decreased with GTS-21 treatment, while H&E staining and TUNEL assays showed that contrast-induced renal injury was improved by GTS-21. Moreover, GTS-21 treatment in the CN also increased the antioxidant glutathione level. In the contrast group, a significant increase in IL-6 expression and a decrease in TGF-β expression were observed; however, GTS-21 treatment decreased IL-6 expression and increased TGF-β expression. Conclusion: GTS-21 significantly alleviated renal injury parameters through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic mechanisms in the CN model.

Abstract

Background/purpose: It is known that COVID-19 patients show many clinical oral symptoms due to the immunological mechanisms triggered by the virus. Aim of this study is to analyze the antibody response to SARS-CoV-2, and to evaluate the oral health status of hospitalized patients. Materials and methods: 160 patients with COVID-19 confirmed by SARS-CoV-2–specific RT-PCR testing and 160 healthy volunteers (HI) with similar age, gender and systemic status were included to compare the bio-chemical and oral manifestations. Oropharyngeal swab specimens were collected to evaluate the salivary interleukins (IL-1, IL-6, IL-10) and immunoglobulins (sIgA, sIgG, sIgM). Oral findings (DMFT, plaque index, salivary flow rate), socio-demographic information and systemic conditions were also recorded. Chi-square, Mann–Whitney U and Spearman's ratio tests were applied to determine the possible correlations between the factors (P = 0.05). 36. Cyberbullying/Cyber-Victimization Status, Cyberbullying Awareness, and Combat Strategies of Administrators and Teachers of Pre-School Education Institutions

Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether the administrators and teachers of preschool education institutions are aware of cyberbullying, whether they are cyber victims or cyberbullies, and their situations of creating strategies by taking security measures to combat cyberbullying. In this regard; A total of 15 public, private and independent kindergartens and teachers of the Ministry of National Education in Edirne city center were included in the study. The Cyberbullying Scale for University Students, developed by Tanrikulu and Erdur - Baker (2019) was used as a data collection tool, the survey forms and the interview forms prepared by the researchers were used for managers and teachers. According to the results of the analysis, administrators and teachers' cyberbullying levels are lower than cyber victimization levels. Teachers who have not heard of cyberbullying are more likely to be cyberbullying than teachers who have heard of it. When the cyberbullying and cyber-victimization status of the teachers participating in the research were analyzed by age, it was concluded that younger teachers were more likely to be cyberbullies than older teachers. Managers with younger children are more cyberbullies than managers with older children. The managers and teachers who participated in the study stated that they learned the concept of cyberbullying most from social media. In addition, it was determined that participants' strategies to combat cyberbullying were also different from each other. Most managers and teachers have stated that seminars on cyberbullying should be held for them, and that family education is also important.

37. Pre-Service Teachers' Understanding of Continuity

Abstract

In this paper, we report the analysis of thought processes used by Pre-Service Teachers' (PSTs') through clinical interviews as they solved an algebra task involving a linear pattern. The PST's were asked about a mathematical model they had constructed to describe a pattern problem. Our analysis suggests that conflict factors arise due to incompatibility in participants' personal concept definition and the formal concept definition of continuity. We identified how personal concept definitions of the participants differed and how this difference affected their decision on whether a graph was continuous or not.

Abstract

Segmenting humans in 3D indoor scenes has become increasingly important with the rise of human-centered robotics and AR/VR applications. To this end, we propose the task of joint 3D human semantic segmentation, instance segmentation and multi-human body-part segmentation. Few works have attempted to directly segment humans in cluttered 3D scenes, which is largely due to the lack of annotated training data of humans interacting with 3D scenes. We address this challenge and propose a framework for generating training data of synthetic humans interacting with real 3D scenes. Furthermore, we propose a novel transformer-based model, Human3D, which is the first end-to-end model for segmenting multiple human instances and their body-parts in a unified manner. The key advantage of our synthetic data generation framework is its ability to generate diverse and realistic human-scene interactions, with highly accurate ground truth. Our experiments show that pre-training on synthetic data improves performance on a wide variety of 3D human segmentation tasks. Many patients with depressive disorder do not respond to conventional antidepressant treatment. There is an ongoing interest in investigating potential mechanisms of treatment resistance in depression to provide alternative treatment options involving inflammatory mechanisms. Increasing evidence implicates the NOD-like receptor pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome as a critical factor in neuroinflammation. ATP-induced P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) activation is a major trigger for inflammation, activating the canonical NLRP3 inflammatory cascade. Psychosocial stress, the primary environmental risk factor for depression, is associated with changes in ATP-mediated P2X7R signaling. Depression and stress response can be alleviated by Cannabidiol (CBD). CBD has an anti-inflammatory activity related to the regulation of NLRP3 inflammasome activation. However, CBD's effects on the inflammasome pathway are poorly understood in central nervous system (CNS) cells, including microglia, astrocytes, and neurons. This review will emphasize some findings for neuroinflammation and NLRP3 inflammasome pathway involvement in depression, particularly addressing the ATP-induced P2X7R activation. Moreover, we will underline evidence for the effect of CBD on depression and address its potential impacts on neuroinflammation through the NLRP3 inflammasome cascade.

45. Analysis of the Representations in Turkish Middle School Science Textbooks from 2002 to 2017

Abstract

Textbooks are one of the primary sources for students to obtain knowledge, so they should present accurate knowledge through textual and visual representations. The goal of the current study is to examine the representations in middle school science textbooks based on the diagram coding scheme to find out a general picture of how representations used in the science textbooks over the fifteen years. The sample consists of 6247 representations from twelve middle school science textbooks (four each of sixth, seventh, and eighth grades) from 2002 to 2017. Content analysis was used to analyze the representations in textbooks, which were gathered by document analysis. The representations were evaluated concerning the combination of two main diagram coding schemes. Findings showed that iconic representations are prevalent in middle school science textbooks. There are limited charts, graphs and augmented reality representations in the science textbooks. Furthermore, there are more male representations than female ones, representations are mostly indexed in the main texts, and captions are mainly problematic in middle school science textbooks. The findings based on the two diagrams coding scheme are mainly coherent with each other. Science textbooks should encourage students to interpret and translate between different representations to enable them accurate knowledge.

Abstract

Raynaud-Claes syndrome is rare condition characterized with intellectual disability and is caused by X-linked pathogenic variants in CLCN4 gene. Hemizygous missense variant NM_001830.4: c.1597G>A (p.V533M) was detected in a 6-year-old male followed up with intellectual disability, dysmorphism, and epileptic encephalopathy. The mother and one sister of the patient were also carrying the same variant. The clinical picture of the patient was significantly more severe, and the patient exhibited nonconvulsive status. Tonic status was observed with benzodiazepine treatment and the patient was successfully treated with a ketogenic diet. Many types of seizures can be seen in Raynaud-Claes syndrome, some of which can be life-threatening. CLCN4 variants can be investigated in patients who exhibit an increase in tonic seizures with benzodiazepine treatment. However, ketogenic dietary therapy as first-line treatment can be lifesaving in resistant epilepsy cases caused by the CLCN4 gene.
