Abstract

Bu çalışma kırmızı yumakta farklı dozlarda kadmiyum (Cd) ve nikele (Ni) maruz bırakılan tohumlarda farklı priming uygulamalarının çimlenme ve fide gelişimi üzerine etkilerini belirlemek amacıyla laboratuvar koşullarında yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada bu iki ağır metalin farklı konsantrasyonları (0, 75, 150, 300 mg l-1 ) kullanılmıştır. Ağır metal uygulamaları altında priming uygulamalarının çimlenmeye etkisini belirlemek amacıyla % 2’lik KNO3 ve 500 ppm GA3 uyarıcı ajanı olarak kullanılmıştır. Araştırma tesadüf parsellerinde faktöriyel deneme desenine göre 4 tekrarlamalı olarak kurulmuş ve yürütülmüştür. Araştırma sonucunda her iki ağır metalin de kırmızı yumağın çimlenme ve fide özellikleri üzerinde olumsuz etkiye neden olduğu, çimlenme özellikleri üzerine ağır metallerin etkisini azaltmada priming uygulamalarının etkisiz kaldığı, hatta yüksek ağır metal dozlarında çimlenmenin priming uygulamalarından negatif yönde etkilendiği görülmüştür. Kırmızı yumağın kök uzunluğu üzerinde priming uygulamalarının olumlu bir etkisi olmazken, fide gelişimi GA3 uygulaması ile olumlu yönde etkilenmiştir. Ayrıca kırmızı yumağın çimlenme özellikleri ve fide gelişimi üzerinde nikelin olumsuz etkilerinin kadmiyumdan daha yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir., The objectives of this study were to determine effects of different priming treatments on germination and seedling growth in red fescue infected with different levels (0, 75, 150 and 300 mg l-1 ) of cadmium and nickel. The study was conducted under laboratory conditions. In the study, two heavy metal kinds (Cadmium (Cd) and Nickel (Ni)) were considered 3 different concentrations (75, 150, 300 mg l -1 ) and distillate water as control application. To determine the effect of germination priming under heavy metal stress, 2% KNO3 and 500 ppm GA3 were used as priming agents. The research was performed as factorial arrangement of completely randomized design with four replications. The results of study indicated that both germination and seedling growth properties were negatively affected by both heavy metal kinds. Priming treatments were ineffective in reducing the effects of heavy metals on germination properties. Germination at high doses of heavy metals was negatively affected by priming treatments. There wasn't positively effect on root length of red fescue of priming treatments, while shoot length was positively affected by GA3 treatment. Also, the negatively effects on germination and seedling growth of nickel were greater than cadmium.

Abstract

Objective  Endotracheal intubation is a frequent procedure performed in neonates with respiratory distress. Clinicians use different methods to estimate the intubation insertion depth, but, unfortunately, the improper insertion results are very high. In this study, we aimed to compare the two different methods (Tochen's formula = weight in kilograms + 6 cm; and nasal septum–tragus length [NTL] + 1 cm) used to determine the endotracheal tube (ETT) insertion depth. Study Design  Infants who had intubation indications were enrolled in this study. The intubation tube was fixed using the Tochen formula (Tochen group) or the NTL + 1 cm formula (NTL group). After intubation, the chest radiograph was evaluated (above T1, proper place, and below T2). Results  A total of 167 infants (22–42 weeks of gestational age) were included in the study. The proper tube placement rate in both groups was similar (32.4 vs. 30.4% for infants < 34 weeks of gestational age and 56.8 vs. 45.0% in infants > 34 weeks of gestational age). The ETT was frequently placed below T2 at a higher rate in infants with a gestational age of <34 weeks, especially in the NTL group (46% in the Tochen group and 60.7% in the NTL group). Conclusion  The NTL + 1 cm formula led to a higher rate of ETT placement below T2, especially in infants with a birth weight of <1,500 g. Therefore, more studies are needed to determine the optimal ETT insertion depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the effects of priming treatments (GA3, KNO3 and Hydropriming) on germination and seedling growth in perennial ryegrass contaminated with different doses (0, 75, 150, and 300 mg l-1) of cadmium and nickel. The study was conducted under laboratory conditions. Perennial ryegrass cv. Integra was used as the plant material. The results showed that both germination and seedling growth properties were adversely affected by heavy metals. The adverse effects of nickel were more pronounced than those of cadmium. The GA3 seed priming pretreatment had positive effects on both germination properties and seedling growth. As a result, GA3 can be used as a seed priming agent if the perennial ryegrass is to be grown in areas contaminated with nickel and cadmium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Giriş: Purpura fulminans nadir görülen bir klinik tablodur. Yenidoğan döneminde sıklıkla konjenital veya kazanılmış protein C veya S eksikliğinden kaynaklanır. Sepsis ilişkili yaygın damar içi pıhtılaşma da bir diğer risk faktörüdür.Yöntem: Üçüncü basamak bir yenidoğan yoğun bakım ünitesinde Ocak 2008 ile Mayıs 2010 tarihleri arasında purpura fulminans tanısı ile izlenmiş olguların dosyaları geriye dönük olarak incelendi. Olguların faktör 5 Leiden, protrombin G20210A ve metilentetrahidrofolat redüktaz mutasyonu sonuçları, plazma protein C, S, antitrombin 3, antifosfolipid antikor ve homosistein düzeyleri ve kültür sonuçları kaydedildi.Bulgular: Toplam yedi olgunun verileri değerlendirildi. Olguların tamamının tanı anında plazma protein C, S ve antitrombin 3 düzeyi düşüktü. Metilentetrahidrofolat redüktazın homozigot mutasyonu bir olguda, heterozigot mutasyonu ise bir diğer olguda saptandı. Homosistein düzeyi metilentetrahidrofolat redüktaz mutasyonu olan olgularda hafif yüksek; diğerlerinde ise normaldi. Bir olguda tedavi sonrasında protein C, S ve antitrombin 3 düzeyi tekrarlanabildi ve sonuçlar normal bulundu. Dört olgunun kan kültüründe etken, izole edildi. İzole edilen mikroorganizmalar Pantoea agglomerans, Candida albicans, Klebsiella pneumonia ve Staphylococcus hominis’di.Sonuç: Bildiğimiz kadarıyla serimiz bugüne kadar yayınlanmış en geniş purpura fulminans tanılı yenidoğan olgu serisidir ve Pantoea agglomerans, Candida albicans ve Klebsiella pneumonia yenidoğanlarda purpura fulminans etkenleri olarak ilk kez bu seri ile gösterilmiştir. Purpura fulminans tanısı ile izlenen ve etiyolojide sepsis ilişkili yaygın damar içi pıhtılaşma düşünülen yenidoğan olgularda bu nadir patojenler de akılda tutularak tedavi ve takipler planlanmalıdır., Introduction: Purpura fulminans is a rare clinical entity. In the neonatal period it is commonly caused by inherited or acquired protein C or S deficiency. Disseminated intravascular coagulation associated with septicemia in newborns may be another risk factor for purpura fulminans. Methods: Charts of the patients followed up with the diagnosis of purpura fulminans at a tertiary level neonatal intensive care unit between January 2008 and May 2010 were retrospectively reviewed. Factor 5 Leiden, prothrombin 20210 A and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase mutations, levels of plasma protein C, S, antithrombin III, antiphospholipid antibody and homocystein, and culture results were recorded in all the patients. Results: Results of a total of seven patients were evaluated. Plasma protein C, S and antithrombin III levels were found decreased at the time of diagnosis in all the cases. One of the cases had methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase homozygous mutation, and another had methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase heterozygous mutation. Homocystein levels were slightly elevated in cases with methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase mutation, and normal in the others cases. Plasma protein C, S and antithrombin 3 levels were studied in only one case after treatment and were normal. A pathogen was identified in blood culture in four out of the seven cases. The isolated microorganisms were Pantoea agglomerans, Candida albicans, Klebsiella pneumonia and Staphylococcus hominis.Conclusion: Pantoea agglomerans, Candida albicans, and Klebsiella pneumonia were determined as the causative agents of purpura fulminans in this series of newborns, which, to our knowledge, is the largest one reported till now. These pathogens should be remembered in infants who are followed up with the diagnosis of purpura fulminans and suspected to have disseminated intravascular coagulation associated with sepsis

Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the neurodevelopment outcomes of very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants supplemented with oral probiotics for the prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Methods: A prospective follow-up study was performed in a cohort of VLBW preterm infants enrolled in a single center randomized controlled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of oral probiotics for the prevention of NEC. Cognitive and neuromotor developments were assessed by using the Bayley scales of infant development II. Sensory and neurological performance was evaluated by standard techniques. The primary outcome was neurodevelopmental impairment at 18–24 months’ corrected age. Results: A total of 400 infants completed the trial protocol. Of the 370 infants eligible for follow-up, 249 infants (124 in the probiotics group and 125 in the control group) were evaluated. There was no significant difference in any of the neurodevelopmental and sensory outcomes between the two groups. Conclusion: Oral probiotic given to VLBW infants to reduce the incidense and severity of NEC started with the first feed did not affect neuromotor, neurosensory and cognitive outcomes at 18–24 months’ corrected age.
