1. Infectious bursal disease (IBD) is an acute, highly contagious viral disease of chickens caused by a virus (IBDV) which has a bi-segmented, double-stranded RNA genome. It has five viral proteins in its structure; the VP1 gene is encoded in segment B and the other four are in segment A.2. In this study, bursae of Fabricius and spleen samples taken from chickens suspected of having clinical or subclinical IBD from a total of 50 chicken flocks located in different geographical regions of Turkey were examined.3. The RT-PCR analysis of the VP2 gene showed that 30 of the 50 samples (60%) tested positive. Eight positive isolates were chosen and RT-PCR was performed to amplify the VP1 gene.4. The study showed that reassortant field strains that cause clinical or subclinical disease are currently circulating in broiler flocks across Turkey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Astrophysics - Abstract
PG 1159-035, a pre-white dwarf with T_eff=140,000 K, is the prototype of both two classes: the PG1159 spectroscopic class and the DOV pulsating class. Previous studies of PG 1159-035 photometric data obtained with the Whole Earth Telescope (WET) showed a rich frequency spectrum allowing the identification of 122 pulsation modes. In this work, we used all available WET photometric data from 1983, 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2002 to identify the pulsation periods and identified 76 additional pulsation modes, increasing to 198 the number of known pulsation modes in PG 1159-035, the largest number of modes detected in any star besides the Sun. From the period spacing we estimated a mass M = 0.59 +/- 0.02 solar masses for PG 1159-035, with the uncertainty dominated by the models, not the observation. Deviations in the regular period spacing suggest that some of the pulsation modes are trapped, even though the star is a pre-white dwarf and the gravitational settling is ongoing. The position of the transition zone that causes the mode trapping was calculated at r_c = 0.83 +/- 0.05 stellar radius. From the multiplet splitting, we calculated the rotational period P_rot = 1.3920 +/- 0.0008 days and an upper limit for the magnetic field, B < 2000 G. The total power of the pulsation modes at the stellar surface changed less than 30% for l=1 modes and less than 50% for l=2 modes. We find no evidence of linear combinations between the 198 pulsation mode frequencies. PG 1159-035 models have not significative convection zones, supporting the hypothesis that nonlinearity arises in the convection zones in cooler pulsating white dwarf stars., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, appendix with 6 long tables. The resolution of some of the figures were changed and some of them can appear with a bit lower quality

Astrophysics - Abstract
We discuss new photometric data collected on the gamma Dor variables HD 224945 and HD 224638. Multiperiodicity was detected in both stars, thanks to the clear spectral window of a multisite campaign that involved five observatories. HD 224945 shows the shortest period among the gamma Dor stars, i.e., 0.3330 d. The pulsation behaviour is very different: HD 224945 displays a set of frequencies spread over an interval much wider than that of HD 224638. We clearly found evidence for amplitude variations in the excited modes by comparing data from different years. HD 224945 and HD 224638 are among the best examples of $\gamma$ Dor stars that show multimode pulsations, which make them very interesting from an asteroseismological point of view., Comment: 8 pages (in A&A style), 3 eps figures. Astrophysics - Abstract
The preliminary results of a 1996 multisite campaign on the pulsating lambda Bootis star 29 Cyg are presented. This campaign, initiated by the Central Asian Network (CAN), allowed to collect data during 48 photometric and 2 spectroscopic nights at observatories of Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Hungary, Canada and USA. The multiplicity of excited modes is confirmed in both spectroscopy and photometry. The analysis of all 1995 and 1996 data, combined with new CAN observations made in July-October 1997, is under way., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, to appear in: Proc. of the 26th workshop of the European Working Group on CP stars, eds. GALLIFORMES ,MITOCHONDRIA ,TURKS ,GENETIC distance ,GENETIC variation ,SALMONELLA enterica ,TAPEWORMS - Abstract
The poultry red mite, PRM, Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer, 1778), is widely regarded as the primary ectoparasite affecting egg-laying hens around the world. Besides direct feeding damage, the transmission of avian pathogens by PRMs is also a significant concern. Therefore, we aimed to screen the presence of 14 common avian pathogens in 32 PRM populations from egg-laying hens in Türkiye. As a result, Salmonella enterica (n=3), Tsukamurella paurometabola (n=18), and Avian fowlpox virus (n=4) (3 of which were wild-type APV) were detected in tested PRM populations. The results showed that the prevalence of avian pathogens in Turkish PRM populations was low. Nevertheless, these findings suggested that PRM can harbor disease-causing agents and may act as a vector in the spread of these pathogens in farms. In addition, four mitochondrial genes (mtDNAs) of D. gallinae, namely ND4, ND5, cytb, and atp6, were amplified, and obtained sequences were submitted to the GenBank database for the first time, which will allow further analyses. The genetic variation within cytb sequences of Turkish PRMs was the highest (1.01%), whereas intra-specific genetic distance was 1.7% when compared to a Chinese population (only available cytb sequence in the GenBank), indicating increasing genetic differentiation by distance. Last, more sequences belonging to mitochondrial genes are required to reveal their potential as molecular markers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
As most of the unenriched cages will soon switch to enriched cages, it is important to characterize all the effects in the laying hens for sustainable production. Laying hens can be used in several production periods by applying molting. The aim of this study was to determine the cage type (unenriched and enriched) on performance, welfare, and microbiological properties of laying hens during the molting period and the second production cycle. Overall, 840 brown laying hybrids were used in the experiment. Laying hens were reared on two different cage types (unenriched cage (UEC) and enriched cage (EC)) in the same poultry house. When the hybrids were 75 weeks old, they were subjected to force molting with whole grain barley. Performance, welfare, microbiological, and serological data of laying hens were obtained from 73 to 107 weeks of age. Egg production, egg weight, feed conversion ratio, breaking strength, albumen and yolk index, Haugh unit, feather condition, and breaking force of femur and metatarsus were better in the post-molting period. However, keel bone deformities and Newcastle disease virus antibody titers are the worst in the post-molting period. Stiffness of femur and metatarsus was increased with period. These results indicate that necessary precautions should be taken against the problems that may occur in the direction of bone and health. During the molting period, hens kept in EC had lower egg production but they returned to egg production at a high rate. EC type had a positive effect on egg production, feed conversion ratio, feather and foot condition, and breaking force of metatarsus.

The precise expression of genes is one of the foundations of biotechnology. Here we present GeneEE, a straightforward method for generating artificial gene expression systems. We demonstrate that GeneEE segments, containing a 200 nucleotide DNA with random nucleotide composition, can facilitate constitutive and inducible gene expression. To highlight the universal character of our method, we demonstrate GeneEE-mediated gene and protein expression in six bacterial species and Baker’s yeast.

We present new spectroscopic observations of the double-lined eclipsing binary V850 Cyg. The long cadence photometric observations obtained by Kepler were analysed and combined with the analysis of radial velocities for deriving the absolute parameters of the components. Masses and radii were determined as M-p=1.601 +/- 0.076 M-circle dot and R-p=4.239 +/- 0.076 R-circle dot, M-s=0.851 +/- 0.053 M-circle dot and R-s=5.054 +/- 0.087 R-circle dot for the components of V850 Cyg. We estimate an interstellar reddening of 0.28 +/- 0.12 mag and a distance of 1040 +/- 160 pc for the system. The measured rotational velocity of the secondary appears to lower than that of synchronize rotation. However its spectral lines are too weak to be measured the rotational velocity with reasonable accuracy. We have extracted the synthetic light curve from the observations and excluded the data within the eclipses for the frequency analysis. We obtained at least nine frequencies in the gamma Dor regime. It seems that the primary component oscillates with a dominant period of about 1.152549 +/- 0.000009 days. We also compare pulsational properties of the primary star of V850 Cyg with the gamma Dor type pulsating components in other binaries. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance is an increasing concern in ICUs worldwide. Infection with an antibiotic resistant (ABR) strain of an organism is associated with greater mortality than infection with the non-resistant strain, but there are few data assessing whether being admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) with high levels of antimicrobial resistance is associated with a worse outcome than being admitted to an ICU with low rates of resistance. The aim of this study was, therefore, to compare the characteristics of infections and antibiotic treatments and patient outcomes in patients admitted to ICUs in countries considered as having high levels of antibiotic resistance and those admitted to ICUs in countries considered as having low levels of antibiotic resistance. Methods: Data from the large, international EPIC II one-day point prevalence study on infections in patients hospitalized in ICUs were used. For the current study, we compared the data obtained from patients from two groups of countries: countries with reported MRSA rates of ≥ 25% (highABR: Greece, Israel, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey) and countries with MRSA rates of < 5% (lowABR: Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden). Results: On the study day, 1187/2204 (53.9%) patients in the HighABR ICUs were infected and 255/558 (45.7%) in the LowABR ICUs (P < 0.01). Patients in the HighABR ICUs were more severely ill than those in the LowABR ICUs, as reflected by a higher SAPS II score (35.6 vs 32.7, P < 0.05) and had longer median ICU (12 days vs 5 days) and hospital (24 days vs 16 days) lengths of stay. They also had higher crude ICU (20.0% vs 15.4%) and hospital (27.0% vs 21.5%) mortality rates (both P < 0.05). However, after multivariable adjustment and matched pair analysis there were no differences in ICU or hospital mortality rates between High or LowABR ICU patients overall or among those with infections. Conclusions: Being hospitalized in an ICU in a region with high levels of antimicrobial resistance is not associated per se with a worse outcome., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the presence of pathogenic mycoplasma species in the turkey population of Turkey. Tracheal samples randomly collected from a total of 624 apparently healthy meat-type turkeys at a commercial abattoir located in the north of the country were examined by culture and genus- and species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for mycoplasma. In the direct plating onto solid specific media, mycoplasma growth was observed from 1.4% (9/624) of the samples, which were confirmed to belong to the Mycoplasma genus by genus-specific PCR. Mycoplasma iowae (MI) and M. meleagridis (MM) were identified by the species-specific PCR from eight and one of the samples, respectively. However, genus-specific PCR amplification was obtained from 2.6% (16/624) of the samples which produced turbidity in the liquid media. Interestingly, these positive samples were different from those obtained from solid agar and mycoplasma growth was not observed when the broth samples were inoculated onto solid media. In the species-specific PCR analysis of the broth samples, MI, MM and M. gallisepticum were identified from twelve, two and two samples, respectively. The inconsistency between the results obtained from liquid and solid media raises questions about the efficiency of isolation procedures for mycoplasma and this warrants further investigation.

PubMed: 26787795, Background: Transfusion of allogeneic blood influences outcome after surgery. Despite widespread availability of transfusion guidelines, transfusion practices might vary among physicians, departments, hospitals and countries. Our aim was to determine the amount of packed red blood cells (pRBC) and blood products transfused intraoperatively, and to describe factors determining transfusion throughout Europe. Methods: We did a prospective observational cohort study enrolling 5803 patients in 126 European centres that received at least one pRBC unit intraoperatively, during a continuous three month period in 2013. Results: The overall intraoperative transfusion rate was 1.8%; 59% of transfusions were at least partially initiated as a result of a physiological transfusion trigger- mostly because of hypotension (55.4%) and/or tachycardia (30.7%). Haemoglobin (Hb)- based transfusion trigger alone initiated only 8.5% of transfusions. The Hb concentration [mean (sd)] just before transfusion was 8.1 (1.7) g dl-1 and increased to 9.8 (1.8) g dl-1 after transfusion. The mean number of intraoperatively transfused pRBC units was 2.5 (2.7) units (median 2). Conclusions: Although European Society of Anaesthesiology transfusion guidelines are moderately implemented in Europe with respect to Hb threshold for transfusion (7-9 g dl-1), there is still an urgent need for further educational efforts that focus on the number of pRBC units to be transfused at this threshold. © 2016 The Author. Conclusions: Being hospitalized in an ICU in a region with high levels of antimicrobial resistance is not associated per se with a worse outcome. © 2014 Hanberger et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.

We consider an assemble-to-order generalized M-system with multiple components and multiple products, batch ordering of components, random lead times, and lost sales. We model the system as an in nite-horizon Markov decision process and seek an optimal control policy, which speci es when a batch of components should be produced and whether an arriving demand for each product should be satis ed. To facilitate our analysis, we introduce new functional characterizations for convexity and submodularity with respect to certain non-unitary directions. These help us characterize optimal inventory replenishment and allocation policies under a mild condition on component batch sizes via a new type of policy: lattice-dependent base-stock and lattice-dependent rationing.

- Abstract
Multiple conceptualizations of laiklik were pronounced in the writing of the 1961 Turkish Constitution. Based on an analysis of the records of the writing of the 1961 Constitution as well as on memoirs, newspapers, and interviews, this paper seeks to answer the question: Which conceptualizations of laiklik were put to the defense of which institutional arrangements and for what political goals? Then, the paper explores a possible critique from the narrative of the questions of laiklik and religions in the writing of the 1961 Turkish Constitution to (1) some liberal and multicultural assumptions prevailing in the contemporary literature on secularism and religion; (2) some aspects of Charles Taylor’s hermeneutical approach; (3) some aspects of the rising multiple modernities approach.

In lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolutions (KRs), the choice of immobilization support and acylating agents (AAs) is crucial. Lipase B from Candida antarctica immobilized onto magnetic nanoparticles (CaLB-MNPs) has been successfully used for diverse KRs of racemic compounds, but there is a lack of studies of the utilization of this potent biocatalyst in the KR of chiral amines, important pharmaceutical building blocks. Therefore, in this work, several racemic amines (heptane-2-amine, 1-methoxypropan-2-amine, 1-phenylethan-1-amine, and 4-phenylbutan-2-amine, (±)-1a–d, respectively) were studied in batch and continuous-flow mode utilizing different AAs, such as diisopropyl malonate 2A, isopropyl 2-cyanoacetate 2B, and isopropyl 2-ethoxyacetate 2C. The reactions performed with CaLB-MNPs were compared with Novozym 435 (N435) and the results in the literature. CaLB-MNPs were less active than N435, leading to lower conversion, but demonstrated a higher enantiomer selectivity, proving to be a good alternative to the commercial form. Compound 2C resulted in the best balance between conversion and enantiomer selectivity among the acylating agents. CaLB-MNPs proved to be efficient in the KR of chiral amines, having comparable or superior properties to other CaLB forms utilizing porous matrices for immobilization. An additional advantage of using CaLB-MNPs is that the purification and reuse processes are facilitated via magnetic retention/separation. In the continuous-flow mode, the usability and operational stability of CaLB-MNPs were reaffirmed, corroborating with previous studies, and the results overall improve our understanding of this potent biocatalyst and the convenient U-shape reactor used.

Fimbrial proteins are important for adhesion and colonization of Bordetella bronchiseptica in the upper respiratory tract. In this study, determination of immunogenicity of the fimbrial proteins isolated from different strains of B. bronchiseptica and their protective efficacy against letal challenge was aimed. For this purpose, fimbrial proteins of seven standard strains and clinical isolates of B. bronchiseptica were partially purified by gel filtration chromatography and analysed by SDSPAGE. In microagglutination test, whole cell F415 was used as the antigen and the agglutination of sera from mice immunized with the purified fimbrial proteins was observed at titers of 1:128 for strains 219 and 4617 and the isolate CA; 1:256 for strain F415 and the isolate UK7; 1:512 for the isolate UK6 and 1:4096 for strain 3036. In addition, by ELISA against F415 fimbrial antigen, the anti-fimbriae antibody levels of the immune mouse sera were observed at serum dilutions of 1:6400 for UK7; 1:3200 for UK6, F415 and 3036; 1:1600 for CA; 1:800 for 219 and 1:400 for 4617. The protective values of the fimbrial proteins against letal challenge with strain F415 in mice immunized with the fimbrial proteins (2x25 ?g/dose) were; 100% for F415 and 3036, 84% for UK6 and 50% for UK7, but no protection was observed with the other strains and isolates. In conclusion, fimbrial antigens were determined to have important protective efficacy and anti-fimbriae antibody levels were found correlated with that protective efficacy.
