We have developed a two-dimensional neutron imager based on a semiconductor pixelated sensor, especially designed for experiments measuring of a spatial and a temporal behavior of quantum bound states of ultra-cold neutrons. Through these measurements, we expect to measure the ratio between the inertial and gravitational masses of neutrons and to test the equivalence principle in the quantum regime. As one of the principal neutron imagers, we fabricated a sensor with a sandwich configuration, named 10B-INTPIX4-sw, and tested its response to ultra-cold neutrons at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). We observed simultaneous events on both sandwiching sensors without significant loss of detection efficiency. The efficiency was evaluated to be about 16%, relative to the 10B/ZnS reference detector. The coincidence condition reduces its efficiency by a factor of about 3.

The measurement of environmental neutrons is particularly important in the search for new physics, such as dark matter particles, because neutrons constitute an often-irreducible background source. The measurement of the neutron energy spectra in the sub-MeV scale is technically difficult because it requires a very good energy resolution and a very high $\gamma$-ray rejection power. In this study, we used a super-fine-grained nuclear emulsion, called Nano Imaging Tracker (NIT), as a neutron detector. The main target of neutrons is the hydrogen (proton) content of emulsion films. Through a topological analysis, proton recoils induced by neutron scattering can be detected as tracks with sub-micrometric accuracy. This method shows an extremely high $\gamma$-ray rejection power, at the level of $5 \times 10^7 ~ \gamma/\rm{cm}^2$, which is equivalent to 5 years accumulation of environmental $\gamma$-rays, and a very good energy and direction resolution even in the sub-MeV energy region. In order to carry out this measurement with sufficient statistics, we upgraded the automated scanning system to achieve a speed of 250 g/year/machine. We calibrated the detector performance of this system with 880 keV monochromatic neutrons: a very good agreement with the expectation was found for all the relevant kinematic variables. The application of the developed method to a sample exposed at the INFN Gran Sasso surface laboratory provided the first measurement of sub-MeV environmental neutrons with a flux of $(7.6 \pm 1.7) \times 10^{-3} \rm{cm}^{-2} \rm{s}^{-1}$ in the proton energy range between 0.25 and 1 MeV (corresponds to neutron energy range between 0.25 and 10 MeV), consistent with the prediction. We present a numerical and experimental study of feedback control of unstable cellular patterns in directional solidification (DS). The sample, a dilute binary alloy, solidifies in a 2D geometry under a control scheme which applies local heating close to the cell tips which protrude ahead of the other. For the experiments, we use a real-time image processing algorithm to track cell tips, coupled with a movable laser spot array device, to heat locally. We show, numerically and experimentally, that spacings well below the threshold for a period-doubling instability can be stabilized. As predicted by the numerical calculations, cellular arrays become stable, and the spacing becomes uniform through feedback control which is maintained with minimal heating., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We present an experimental study of the surface effects (interactions with the container walls) during the nucleation and growth of smectic B crystals from the nematic in free growth and directional solidification of a mesogenic molecule ($C_4H_9-(C_6H_{10})_2CN$) called CCH4 in thin (of thickness in the 10 $\mu$m range) samples. We follow the dynamics of the system in real time with a polarizing microscope. The inner surfaces of the glass-plate samples are coated with polymeric films, either rubbed polyimid (PI) films or monooriented poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) films deposited by friction at high temperature. The orientation of the nematic and the smectic B is planar. In PI-coated samples, the orientation effect of SmB crystals is mediated by the nematic, whereas, in PTFE-coated samples, it results from a homoepitaxy phenomenon occurring for two degenerate orientations. A recrystallization phenomenon partly destroys the initial distribution of crystal orientations. In directional solidification of polycrystals in PTFE-coated samples, a particular dynamics of faceted grain boundary grooves is at the origin of a dynamical mechanism of grain selection. We demonstrate by both experiments and phase-field simulations that lamellar eutectic growth can be stable for a wide range of spacings below the point of minimum undercooling at low velocity, contrary to what is predicted by existing stability analyses. This overstabilization can be explained by relaxing Cahn's assumption that lamellae grow locally normal to the eutectic interface., Comment: 4 pages, 5 eps figures

We present an experimental study of the directional-solidification patterns of a nematic - smectic B front. The chosen system is C_4H_9-(C_6H_{10})_2CN (in short, CCH4) in 12 \mu m-thick samples, and in the planar configuration (director parallel to the plane of the sample). The nematic - smectic B interface presents a facet in one direction -- the direction parallel to the smectic layers -- and is otherwise rough, and devoid of forbidden directions. We measure the Mullins-Sekerka instability threshold and establish the morphology diagram of the system as a function of the solidification rate V and the angle theta_{0} between the facet and the isotherms. We focus on the phenomena occurring immediately above the instability threshold when theta_{0} is neither very small nor close to 90^{o}. Under these conditions we observe drifting shallow cells and a new type of solitary wave, called "faceton", which consists essentially of an isolated macroscopic facet traveling laterally at such a velocity that its growth rate with respect to the liquid is small. Facetons may propagate either in a stationary, or an oscillatory way.
