Abstract

Objective: Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (AT/RT) is a rare subgroup of embryonal tumors of childhood central nervous system (CNS) tumors. It has been reported that approximately 75-98% of patients with AT/RT have somatic changes (deletion, point mutation, loss of heterozygosity) in the SMARCB1/INI1 gene localized in 22q11.2 and also one-third of the patients have germline mutations. This study aimed to investigate the SMARCB1/INI1 mutations, a tumor suppressor gene associated with this tumor, in patients with AT/RT. Material and Methods: The demographic, clinical, pathological features and SMARCB1/INI1 mutations of patients diagnosed at Ege University between 2010-2015 were evaluated. DNA was isolated from pathological preparations of tumor tissue of all cases and peripheral blood of accessible patients, and all exonic regions for the SMARCB1/INI1 gene were reproduced by polymerase chain reaction, and DNA sequence analysis was performed after control by gel electrophoresis. Pathogenicity of the variations found was evaluated according to American College of Medical Genetics 2015 criteria. Results: 7/10 patients were diagnosed as AT/RT of CNS, 2/10 as soft tissue RT, and 1/10 as the renal RT. In 77% of the patients, loss of SMARCB1/INI1 protein expression was detected by immunohistochemical methods in tumor tissue and mean survival was 5 months (1-69 months, SE: 9.29 months). The mutation was detected in SMARCB1/INI1 in tumor tissue of four patients and median survival was 5.5 months (1-15 months, SE: 2.95 months). The median survival of patients without a mutation in the SMARCB1/INI1 gene was found to be 10.5 months (1-81 months, SE: 14.6 months). Conclusion: The median survival time of the patients with SMARCB1/INI1 mutation seems to be shorter than the ones without the mutation. Unlike previous publications, in our patient group diagnosed as AT/RT, no germline mutation was detected in the SMARCB1/INI1 gene. Copyright © 2020 by Türkiye Klinikleri. Abstract

Actinomycosis is a chronic, suppurative, granulomatous and spreading disease which is caused by anaerobic bacteria of the family Actinomycetaceae. It is an endogenous infection and is induced by some predisposing factors that introduce Actinomyces species, which are the normal in habitants of the host, into the mucosa. There are a variety of forms including cervico-fasial, abdominal, toracic, pelvic, cerebral, and cutaneous actinomycosis. Cutaneous actinomycosis is extremely rare. Further more, actinomycosis is frequently undiagnosed or misdiagnosed and thus is not treated correctly. In most cases, definitive diagnosis is made after surgical resection. We present 9-year-old boy who was referred to our center with the complaint of back mass and the histopathological examination of excisional biopsy which was performed for excluding malignancy revealed actinomycosis . © 2017 by Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society.

Abstract

Nous avons conçu et construit un système optique de synthèse d’ondes hyperfréquences, millimétriques et submillimétriques à très bas bruit de phase. Les résultats préliminaires montrent une densité spectrale de bruit de phase à 10 kHz de la porteuse d’une onde à 9 GHz limitée par l’appareil de mesure. Pour les bruits plus près de la porteuse, le bruit de phase est limité par une modulation d’amplitude résiduelle : le système est en cours de modifications.

Abstract

PubMed ID: 26506977, Acremonium species are saprophytic molds widely distributed in nature, existing in soil and decaying vegetation. Penetrating wounds, intravascular catheters and immunosuppression are risk factors for invasive infections of Acremonium. The fungus can also cause cutaneous infections and mycetoma in the immunocompetent; such infections occur in extremities open to trauma. In this paper, a female patient with skin infection due to Acremonium strictum in both legs is described.

Abstract

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) commonly arises from smooth muscles of visceral organs, such as uterus, gastrointestinal system and has a poor prognosis due to its metastatic potential. LMS derived from smooth muscles of the skin, named superficial LMS, usually indolent and has a better prognosis. Especially, LMS derived from pilar muscles is usually restricted to the dermis and rarely metastasizes. However, LMS originating from smooth muscles of subcutis behaves more aggressively and metastasizes more commonly. Here, we report a patient with giant superficial LMS on the lower extremity which invaded the underlying tissues like bone, tendons and joint and metastasized to the lung. The patient received chemotherapy following a below-knee amputation.

Abstract

Here we have carried out a multiparameter analysis using a panel of 28 immunohistochemical markers to identify markers of transformation from benign and dysplastic naevus to primary melanoma in three separate cohorts totalling 279 lesions. We have identified a set of eight markers that distinguish naevi from melanoma. None of markers or parameters assessed differentiated benign from dysplastic naevi. Indeed, the naevi clustered tightly in terms of their immunostaining patterns whereas primary melanomas showed more diverse staining patterns. A small subset of histopathologically benign lesions had elevated levels of multiple markers associated with melanoma, suggesting that these represent naevi with an increased potential for transformation to melanoma.

Abstract

Background The Runx family proteins, including RUNX3, are tissue-restricted transcription factors and play role in neuronal development and tumorigenesis. RUNX3 has an important role in glioblastoma (GBM) tumorigenesis because of its promoter hypermethylation. Aim We aimed to evaluate the methylation-mediated expression regulation of RUNX3 gene in brain tumors. Patients and methods Cases of meningiomas WHO grade III (3), anaplastic astrocytomas (3), diffuse astrocytoma (3), and GBM (12) were recruited into this study. Real-time quantitative PCR was performed for analyses of DNA promoter methylation and analyses of methylation-mediated expression status of RUNX3 gene was performed by real-time quantitative RT-PCR. Results There was no significant difference between methylated and unmethylated quantitative ratio of RUNX3 gene promoter region and also no significant difference in relative ratio of RUNX3 gene expression in brain tumor groups. Methylated and unmethylated ratio in anaplastic astrocytoma, diffuse astrocytoma, GBM, meningioma (WHO grade III) and in all groups were; 1.44, 1.09, 1.51, 1.52 and 1.43, respectively. One allele was found methylated necessarily. No methylation was detected in one case of GBM group and one case of anaplastic astrocytoma group. There was no unmethylated promoter in one of the GBM cases. There were significant differences between relative ratio of RUNX3 gene expression and methylated/unmethylated ratio rates for all cases (p = 0.001) and GBM groups (p = 0.041). Conclusion This study overemphasized the RUNX3 gene importance in brain tumors, due to the existence of at least one methylated allele.

Abstract

PubMed ID: 24448706, Objective: We aimed to determine the prognostic value of bcl-2, c-myc and survivin in synovial sarcoma cases and to evaluate the relationship between the conventional morphological findings with prognosis. Material and Method: In this study, we evaluated 81 synovial sarcoma cases referred to our tertiary tumor center during a period of 20 years. We applied bcl-2, c-myc and survivin immunohistochemically and investigated the relationship with prognosis for those 65 cases with follow-up. The relationship between the conventional morphological findings (mitosis, necrosis, grade) with prognosis was also investigated. Results: Five-year disease free survival rate was 44% and ten-year progression free survival rate was 38%, reflecting the aggressive behavior of synovial sarcoma. Tumor grade (according to FNCLCC) was the most significant prognostic input in this study. Abstract

Reports on keratinous cysts involving the tarsal plate are very rare. Herein, we present a 69-year-old male patient with a giant tarsal keratinous cyst of the right upper eyelid who was misdiagnosed as chalazion of the eyelid. Interventional case report with cytopathologic correlation. Due to recurrence after the surgery for presumed chalazion, the patient was referred to our clinic for tumor evaluation. In the second surgery, which was performed in our clinic, the lesion was found to have a fine capsule and was totally excised. Histopathologic examination revealed keratinous cyst of the tarsal plate. Keratinous cyst must be considered in the differential diagnosis of tarsal plate lesions, as the curettage of the keratinous cyst might result in multiple recurrences.

Abstract

International audience; The radiation and temporal properties of one-dimensional and two-dimensional (Bull's-eye) corrugated antennas are investigated numerically and experimentally at terahertz. The thickness of the antenna is miniaturized, within the fabrication limits, by using the transverse slot resonance rather than the longitudinal resonance. Square and triangular corrugations are discussed. The comparison between these two profiles shows that, in terms of return loss and gain, the antenna is robust to the corrugation shape, which alleviates the fabrication complexity. The temporal analysis of the Bull's eye antenna is also shown to demonstrate the contributions coming from the leakage of the surface wave at each groove. This insight allows us to engineer the temporal shape of the output pulse by varying independently the depth of each groove. The antennas presented here hold promise for manipulating with very low profiles pulse- and beam-shapes of THz radiation.

Abstract

Both leukocytoclastic vasculitis and metastatic pulmonary calcification are conditions that rarely occur during the course of multiple myeloma. We present a multiple myeloma patient that had severe dyspnea due to metastatic pulmonary calcinosis, and ulceronecrotic skin lesions caused by leukocytoclastic vasculitis. After 3 courses of standarddose chemotherapy all skin and pulmonary lesions disappeared. Autologous peripheral stem cell transplantation was performed and during 1 year of follow-up the patient was in complete remission; after 1 year, laboratory test results indicated disease relapse. Although the patient was treated with bortezomib and dexamethasone, the disease progressed. Non-myeloablative allogeneic stem cell transplantation was performed, but despite of all treatment the patient died due to disease progression.

Abstract

Rheumatoid nodules are the most common extra-articular lesions. They usually occur in rheumatoid factor positive patients and indicate activity and severity of the disease. These nodules characteristically occur subcutaneously on extensor surfaces over the elbows or other bony prominences. They may be overlooked if they occur in sites other than well-known areas. We present a case with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who developed multiple subcutaneous, histologically- proven rheumatoid nodules in both buttocks as well as on palmar aspects of phalanges after 3.5 years of very low-dose weekly methotrexate (MTX) treatment. These nodules occurred abruptly while there was not active arthritis in any joint. MTX-induced large nodules may occur even with very low doses of MTX, in atypical localizations such as both buttocks. © 2011 by Türkiye Klinikleri.

Abstract

International audience; Using a dual frequency Brillouin fiber laser and a 1.55 μm photomixer, we report the generation of a highly coherent kilo-Hertz level sub-millimeter wave emission. This system does not require any electrical synthesizer, and low cost telecom components are used to achieve very simple source architecture. The THz photomixer is composed of a uni-travelling carrier photodiode integrated with an antenna. A ~ 1 kHz linewidth emission at 316 GHz is observed, with a signal to noise ratio >; 65 dB.
