WOS: 000485852800042 Upper Akcay River (Denizli-Mugla, Turkey) is located in Mugla and Denizli province from Buyuk Menderes Basin, in Southern part of Turkey. Kemer Dam Lake separates the river from the downstream and prevents the fish passages. Akcay River is important for aquaculture activities, irrigation and fisheries activities. In upper Akcay River have many threats which affect the study area these are pollution of agricultural and domestic activities, fishing pressure, habitat degradation, over-abstraction of water and barriers. The study was conducted to assess the physical and chemical water quality parameters and fisheries activities of upper Akcay River. The upper Akcay River goes through Kemer Dam Lake, in this river fisheries and aquaculture are practice. This study was carried out between June 2012 and May 2013. Water samples were taken in three stations from upper Akcay River and were analyzed for water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, amonium nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and orthophosphate. In this study, fish samples were collected by electrofishing and cast net from tree station from the river. River water quality is important because it is used for domestic purpose, drinking, irrigation and aquatic activity. The upper Akcay River is one of the most prominent and a sensitive region that is not too exposed to human effects in Buyuk Menderes Basin. The river can play a vital role in contributing to social economic and development. This study describes the water quality assessment of upper Akcay River in the Southwestern Anatolia. The mean values of overall water quality parameters results have been observed as water temperature (15.15 degrees C), pH (7.58), conductivity (555.25 mu S/cm), TDS (371.44), dissolved oxygen (8.56 mg/L), ammonium (0.09 mg/L), nitrate (3.84 mg/L), orto-phosphate (0.04 mg/L). The economic species caught in the river are Onchorynchus mykiss, Capoeta bergamae, Alburnus escherichii, Vimba mirabilis, Chondrostoma meandrense, Squalius fellowesii, Barbus pectoralis and Carassius gibelio. According to the WPRA, surface water quality of the upper River was classified as level I. At the end of the analyses, it was revealed that the areas is suitable for trout aquaculture and fisheries. Çalışma sahasının lokasyonu Muğla-Denizli il sınırını oluşturan Akçay'ın yukarı çığırını kapsamaktadır. Sahanın büyük bir bölümü Muğla il sınırları içerisinde kalmaktadır. Ege bölgesinin güneyinde bulunan saha Akdeniz iklimi bölgesi içerisinde kalmaktadır. Çalışmanın amacı, bitki örtüsün dağılışı ve karakteri açısından son derece önemli olan ekolojik şartların, bitki örtüsünün dağılışının ve insan ile bitki örtüsü arasındaki ilişkinin ortaya konulmasıdır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda iklim şartlarının, jeomorfolojik şartların, jeolojik yapının ve toprak şartlarının ortaya konması hedeflenmiştir. Bunun için Meteoroloji Genel Müdürlüğü'nden alınan iklim verileri, sahanın yer şekillerini gösteren topografya haritaları, toprak haritası gibi farklı formatta materyal kullanılmıştır. İklim verileri düzenlenip analiz edilmiştir. Topografya haritaları ArcGIS 10.2.2 programı sayesinde sayısallaştırılmıştır. Büyük toprak gruplarını gösteren harita yorumlanmıştır. Arazi çalışmaları ve gözlemler yapılıp örnekler toplanmıştır. Bunun sonucunda bir vejetasyon çalışmasının ilk aşaması olan ekolojik şartların ortaya konulması sağlanmıştır. İklim verilerin analizi yardımı ile sahanın yağış şartları, yıllık ve mevsimlik rüzgârın durumu, sıcaklıkların uzun yıllık günlük, aylık ve yıllık gösterdiği özellikler ortaya konulmuştur. Saha iklim tasnifleri içerisinde tipik Akdeniz iklimi özellikleri sergilediği tanımlanmıştır. Tüm analiz çalışmaları sonucunda bitki hayatını kısıtlayan ve yön veren ekolojik şartlar ortaya konulmuştur. Vejetasyon haritası oluşturulmuştur. İnsan ve bitki örtüsü arasındaki ilişki ortaya konulmuştur. İnceleme alanının asıl bitki örtüsünü kuru orman karakterindeki Pinus brutia ormanları oluşturmaktadır. İnsan tahribi sonucunda çalı formasyona rastlanmaktadır. Bölgede esas itibariyle suyun noksanlığı bitki hayatını en çok kısıtlayan faktör olmuştur. Suyun varlığına bağlı olarak bitki örtüsünün dağılışında meydana gelen değişimler oldukça belirgindir. Liquidambar orientalis, Platanus orientalis ve Alnus orientalis var. orientalis gibi riperyan türlerin dağılışında bu bağlılık görülmektedir. The location of the study area includes upper course of Akçay river, which forms the Muğla-Denizli provincial border. Much of the area remains within the boundaries of Muğla province. The area is located within south of the Aegean region and included Mediterranean climate zone. The purpose of the study is to reveal the ecological conditions, the distribution of the vegetation cover and the relationship between the people and the vegetation cover which are very important in terms of the distribution of vegetation cover and characteristics. For this purpose, it is aimed to reveal climatic conditions, geomorphological conditions, geological structure and soil conditions. For this purpose, different format materials such as climate data obtained from the Turkish State Meteorological Service, topographical maps showing landforms of the site and soil maps have been used. Climate data was organized and analyzed. The topography maps are digitized by ArcGIS 10.2.2 program. A map showing large soil groups has been interpreted. Land studies and observations were made and samples were collected. As a result, it is ensured that ecological conditions. With the help of the analysis of climate data, the conditions of precipitation, annual and seasonal winds, long-term daily, monthly and yearly temperatures are shown. It has been described that typical climate features in the field climate classifications. Consequently all the analysis studies, ecological conditions which restrict and direct the life of the plant were revealed. A vegetation map was created. The relationship between human and vegetation has been revealed. The main plant cover of the study area is the Pinus brutia forests in the dry forest character. The result of human destruction is maquis formation. Essentially water shortage in the region has been the most limiting factor for plant life. The changes that occur in the distribution of vegetation depending on the presence of water are quite evident The distribution of riperyan species such as Liquidambar orientalis, Platanus orientalis and Alnus orientalis is observed to be related to the presence of water. 119

ÖZET Bu çalışmada, Akçay'ın fiziko-kimyasal özellikleri ve epilitik alglerin mevsimsel değişimleri Haziran-2001 ile Eylül-2002 tarihleri arasında incelenmiş, fiziko-kimyasal verilerle, incelenen organizmalar arasındaki ilişki belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Yapılan incelemede epilitik alglerden diatomlann hem takson hem de birey sayısı yönünden baskın oldukları belirlenmiştir. Akçay'ın epilitik algleri: Cyanophyta'ya ait 30 takson, Chrysophyta'ya ait 1 takson, Euglenophyta'ya ait 6 takson, Chlorophyta`ya ait 27 takson ve Bacillariophyta'ya ait 75 takson olmak üzere toplam 138 taksonla temsil edilmiştir. Su kalitesi fiziko-kimyasal verilere ve epilitik alglere göre her istasyonda belirlenmiş ve birbirleriyle karşılaştınlmıştır. Akçay'da tespit edilen organizmalara bağlı sıklık, baskınlık, çeşitlilik ve benzerlik analizleri de yapılarak su kalitesi sonuçlarıyla değerlendirilmiştir. Yapılan çalışmalar sonucunda Akçay'da I. ve I - II. su kalitesi basamakları saptanmıştır. ANAHTAR KELİMELER: Epilitik alg, Su kalitesi, Akçay. n ABSTRACT In this study, the physical and chemical caracteristics of Akçay and the seasonal developments of epilithic algae were investigated during the period of June- 2001 and September-2002. The relationship between the physical and chemical data and the investigated organisms were determinated. In this study, it was determinated that diatoms among the benthic algae communities were occupy dominant in respect of both taxa and occurance. Epilithic algae of Akçay represented by total of 138 taxa which were belong to 30 taxa to Cyanophyta, 1 taxon to Chrysophyta, 6 taxa to Euglenophyta, 27 taxa to Chlorophyta and 75 taxon to Bacillariophyta. Quality of water was determinated at each station according to the physical and chemical data and epilithic algae and compared with each other. Based on the organisms of Akçay, the frequency, dominancy, diversity and similarity analysis were performed and used to make comperation the result of water quality. m ÖZET Bu çalışma, Haziran 2001 ile Eylül 2002 tarihleri arasında Akçay nehri üzerinde seçilen 6 istasyonda yapılmıştır. Akçay'ın fiziko-kimyasal özellikleri ile birlikte bentik makroinvertebratlann mevsimsel değişimleri incelenmiş olup fiziko-kimyasal veriler ile incelenen organizmalar arasındaki ilişki belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Bentik makroinvertebratlardan Mollusca, Annelida ve Arthropoda şubelerine ait olmak üzere toplam 76 takson tespit edilmiştir. Insecta, belirlenen bentik makroinvertebratlar içerisinde en baskın gruptur. Su kalitesi, her istasyon için fiziko-kimyasal verilere ve bentik makroinvertebratlara göre belirlenmiş ve birbiriyle karşılaştırılmıştır. Akçay' da belirlenen organizmaların sıklık, baskınlık, çeşitlilik ve benzerlik analizleri de yapılarak su kalitesi sonuçlarıyla değerlendirilmiştir. Yapılan çalışma Akçay ile ilgili ilk limnofaunistik çalışma olduğu için, tespit edilen taksonlar bölge için ilk kayıttır. IV ABSTRACT This study was carried out between June 2001 and September 2002 in the choosen 6 stations on Akçay River. The physical and chemical characteristics of Akçay River and seasonal developments of benthic macroinvertebrates were investigated. The relationship between the physical and chemical data and the investigated organisms were determined. A total of 76 taxa belong to Mollusca, Annelida and Arthropoda phylla were determined. Insecta was found to be the most dominant group among benthic macroinvertebrates. Quality of water was determined at each station according to -the physical and chemical data and benthic macroinvertebrates and compared with each other. Based on the organisims of Akçay River, the frequency, dominancy, diversity and similarity analysis were performed and used to make comparison the results of water quality.
