Oral mucositis is a frequently occurring and debilitating complication of radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. It is an early effect of radiation and results from mitotic death of the basal cells of the oral epithelium. It usually appears 2 weeks after initiation of radiotherapy. Many treatments have already been discussed regarding the management of this condition, but some reports show little evidence supporting the effectiveness of some of these interventions. The role of the general practitioner in the prevention and management of radiation induced mucositis is critical. The general practioner must collaborate with the oncologist, dental surgeon to ensure comprehensive treatment of this condition. Malaria control strategies for a particular area largely depends on the correct identification of the mosquito species prevalent in that area. This study aimed to develop an android mobile app named 'Pictorial Indian anophelines key', which can be used to identify the 58 species of Indian female adult anophelines based on morphological characteristics.The pre-requisite to use this app requires a minimum basic knowledge of mosquito morphological characteristics and features. The user needs to view the collected mosquito under a dissecting binocular microscope and has to select the observations on the app presented in the form of labelled picture format. The app uses a divide and conquer algorithm which narrows the selection from genus level to final identification of species.The app is user-friendly, quick and it accurately identifies the mosquito species in a maximum of six consecutive clicks. The result displays a complete image of identified mosquito along with its quick identification features. It can be used for both subgenus Cellia and Anopheles.This pictorial key-based mobile app could be helpful for entomologists, malariologists, researchers, public health workers as well as students in the quick and correct identification of anopheline mosquitoes prevalent in India which in turn could be helpful in devising appropriate approaches towards malaria control and prevention. The app can be modified as per future requirements.

Background & objectives: Plasmodiumfalciparum malaria causes wide variety of clinical symptoms ranging from a mild febrile illness to life-threatening complications. For prevention of the severity and early diagnosis, evaluation of potential biomarkers is much needed. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase protein and well-recognized marker of inflammation in the body. It is synthesized by liver in response to pro-inflammatory responses and has correlation with complications associated with malaria. The study was aimed to assess, if it could serve as a predictive marker for malaria disease severity. Methods: In the present study, 74 P. falciparum patients and 22 healthy controls were enrolled. Turbidimetric immunoassay was used to measure the CRP in serum samples of all the study participants. Mann-Whitney U-test for continuous data and chi-square test for categorical data were used to compare all malaria cases vs. healthy control group and uncomplicated vs. severe malaria groups. Using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, best threshold value was determined for CRP in severe malaria patients. Results: CRP level was significantly elevated in all malaria case groups (1.6 mg/dl IQ 1-2.6) as compared to healthy controls (0.10 mg/dl IQ 0.1-0.20), with p-value

Introduction: Nurses play an essential role in the society to improve public awareness about general and oral health. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess knowledge of nursing students and their attitude towards oral health, and examine their oral health-related behavior among nursing students of Karad taluka, Maharashtra. Method: The present study was carried out among 300 nursing students of Karad taluka, Maharashtra. The questionnaire was self-prepared and consisted of 15 questions related to oral health attitude, knowledge and behavior, and was distributed to the participants. The data obtained was then statistically analyzed and the frequency and percentage of the data for all three sections was obtained using statistical package for social science (SPSS) version 16. Result: Out of 300 nursing students, 175 (58.33%) were aware of different techniques used for brushing teeth and 135 (45%) students brushed their teeth twice daily. All the students (100%) preferred using toothbrush and toothpaste as a cleaning aid. Conclusion: The current study concluded that most of the studied students had satisfactory basic knowledge about oral health. The students showed positive attitude towards oral health.

G6PD deficiency results from numerous mutations in the G6PD gene and can cause alterations in enzyme function up to varying degrees. P. vivax malaria infections require G6PD deficiency screening because of the potential risk of haemolysis by the gametocytocidal drug (primaquine) during the radical treatment. The present study investigated the incidence of G6PD deficiency from northeast India and further, molecular characterization was performed. During 2014-16, a total of 1,015 patients from four north-eastern states of India (Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya & Arunachal Pradesh), were screened for G6PD deficiency, using Beutler's fluorescence spot test (FST) and confirmed with SPAN G6PD kit. The deficient individuals (55/1015, 5.4%) were further characterized by PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing except one case of lost to follow up. As observed by FST, the frequency of G6PD deficient males (42/538, 7.8%) were found to be higher than females (13/477, 2.73%), (p < 0.0001). Two non-synonymous mutations; G6PD-D (Mahidol)487A (48/54, 88.9%; 36 hemizygous males, 8 homozygous and 4 heterozygous females) and G6PD-D (Acores)595T (2/54, 3.7%) were identified. Remaining (4/54, 7.4%) individuals could not be characterized. Molecular modeling and dynamic simulations were performed for the G6PD wild-type (G6PD-WT) enzyme and its variants. The in-silico results demonstrated alterations in the secondary structures & crucial loss of ligand-protein interactions, which might result in reduced enzyme function, leading to enzyme deficiency. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to document G6PD-Mahidol and G6PD-Acores variants from malaria-endemic regions of northeast India, and provided molecular insights on the varied genetic makeup of the studied population.

Context: Identification of gender is of primary importance in forensic investigations when only fragment of skull remains. Mandible is a hard bone and exhibits a high degree of sexual dimorphism. Gender differences were observed in the height of mandible, gonial angle, bigonial breadth, bicondylar breadth, and position of mental foramen (MF). Aims of the Study: The purpose of this study is to evaluate gender differences in distances from superior border of MF (SMF) and inferior border of MF (IMF) to the lower border of mandible (LBM) and height of mandible in the Maharashtra population. Materials and Methods: A total of 400 patients (200 males and 200 females) were considered for the study. The panoramic radiographs of patients were captured using Xtropan 2000 system and Carestream (T-Mat GIRA) films. The distance from SMF and IMF to the LBM and the height of mandible was measured. Statistical Analysis Used: Unpaired t-test was applied to calculate the differences between the genders. Results: The distance from SMF and IMF to LBM and height of mandible was more in males when compared to females, which was statistically significant. Conclusion: The distances from SMF and IMF to the LBM and height of the mandible showed sexual dimorphism in the Maharashtra population of India.

OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to determine the number and types of oromucosal lesions (OMLs) in relation to tobacco habits in patients who attended the outpatient department. METHODOLOGY: A total of 1730 patients visiting the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology were interviewed and screened for tobacco habits (smoking and smokeless). Clinical oral examination was conducted with diagnostic instruments using the Color Atlas of Common Oral Diseases as a guide for diagnosis. When clinical features were not diagnostic, a biopsy was done. RESULTS: Of the 1730 outpatients, 975 (56.3% ) individuals used tobacco in one or other forms and 687 (70.4%) of these had OMLs. CONCLUSION: The results of this study provide important information on the prevalence of OMLs in patients seeking dental care. This provides baseline data for future studies on the prevalence of oral lesions in the general population.

Background & objectives: Vector control strategies play significant role in reducing the transmission of malaria, dengue and other vector-borne diseases. The control of vector population using synthetic insecticides has resulted in development of insecticide resistance and negative effects on humans and environment. The present investigation evaluated the larvicidal potential of methanol, dichloromethane and hexane extracts of leaves and seeds of Ricinus communis (castor) plant against the early IV instar larvae of the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, and malaria vector, Anopheles culicifacies. Methods: Plant extracts were screened for their efficacy against Ae. aegypti and An. culicifacies using WHO standard larval susceptibility test method. Dose response bioassay was performed to get lethal concentrations. Further, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis was carried out to identify the bioactive chemical constituents of the extracts of R. communis. Toxicity of the extracts towards non-target organism, Poecilia reticulata was also evaluated. Results: The leaf and seed extracts of R. communis showed significant mortality against the larvae of Ae. aegypti and An. culicifacies at concentrations of 31.25, 62.5, 125, 250, 500 ppm; and 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 ppm, respectively. At 24 h of the exposure period, the larvicidal activities were highest for the methanol extract of seeds with LC50 15.52 and 9.37 ppm and LC90 45.24 and 31.1 ppm for Ae. aegypti and An. culicifacies, respectively. The methanol extract of seeds and leaves was found to be safe towards non-target organism, P. reticulata. The GC-MS profile showed that seed extracts were having higher concentration of stigmasterol (7.5%), β-sitosterol (11.48%), methyl linoleate (2.5%), vitamin E (11.93%), and ricinoleic acid (34%) than the leaf extracts. Interpretation & conclusion: The seed extract of R. communis has better larvicidal activity than the leaf extract and can be used as an effective larvicide against mosquitoes. The non-toxicity of the extracts towards P. reticulata further suggests that these plant extracts could be used along with predatory fishes in integrated vector control approaches.

Objective of the Study: To evaluate the morphological variations of the coronoid process using Orthopantomograms in the western part of Maharashtra population. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out using 300 orthopantomograms (OPGs) comprised of both gender, the different shapes of the coronoid process were traced on both the right and left sides. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. Results: The most common shape of the coronoid process was observed to be triangular followed by beak shape, round shape and flat shape. Conclusion: Based on the present study in western population of Maharashtra, triangular shape of coronoid process was most common in males and females.
