1. Drivers of Electric Vehicle Adoption in Nigeria: An Extended UTAUT Framework Approach

Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) represent a significant advancement in automotive technology, utilizing electricity as a power source instead of traditional fossil fuels, while incorporating sophisticated navigation and autopilot systems. These vehicles align with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by offering a more environmentally sustainable alternative to internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Despite their potential, the adoption of EVs in developing nations such as Nigeria remains constrained. This study expands the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) framework by incorporating key enablers, including poor infrastructure, affordability issues, and government support, within the broader category of facilitating conditions. Additionally, it examines factors such as trust, performance expectations, social influences, and network externalities to identify the primary determinants influencing Nigerian consumers' propensity to adopt EVs. Results show that the percentage increase of H6 (facilitating conditions - behavioral intentions) compared to H5 (network externalities - behavioral intentions) is approximately 32.35%, indicating that traditional drivers significantly influence individuals' willingness to purchase EVs and are particularly strong factors in adoption decisions. The paper concludes with a discussion of these findings and proposes strategies for future research to further explore the barriers and drivers of EV adoption in Nigeria.

2. A Comparative Study of Hybrid Models in Health Misinformation Text Classification

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models in detecting COVID-19-related misinformation on online social networks (OSNs), aiming to develop more effective tools for countering the spread of health misinformation during the pan-demic. The study trained and tested various ML classifiers (Naive Bayes, SVM, Random Forest, etc.), DL models (CNN, LSTM, hybrid CNN+LSTM), and pretrained language models (DistilBERT, RoBERTa) on the "COVID19-FNIR DATASET". These models were evaluated for accuracy, F1 score, recall, precision, and ROC, and used preprocessing techniques like stemming and lemmatization. The results showed SVM performed well, achieving a 94.41% F1-score. DL models with Word2Vec embeddings exceeded 98% in all performance metrics (accuracy, F1 score, recall, precision & ROC). The CNN+LSTM hybrid models also exceeded 98% across performance metrics, outperforming pretrained models like DistilBERT and RoBERTa. Our study concludes that DL and hybrid DL models are more effective than conventional ML algorithms for detecting COVID-19 misinformation on OSNs. The findings highlight the importance of advanced neural network approaches and large-scale pretraining in misinformation detection. 3. Modeling and Simulation of a Fully Autonomous Electric Vehicle (AEV)

Abstract

With continuous advancements in science and technology, there is increasing focus on environmental sustainability, leading to heightened interest in autonomous electric vehicles (AEVs). AEVs hold significant potential for enhancing electric mobility, energy efficiency, environmental preservation, and driving capabilities. They offer numerous advantages that could revolutionize transportation and urban lifestyles, notably by improving road safety through the reduction of human error, a leading cause of accidents. This paper presents a comprehensive simulation of an AEV by developing and integrating models for the driving system, battery, motor, transmission, and vehicle body within the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Each component is configured and interconnected to create a pure vehicle model. The simulation is conducted under UDDS cycle conditions to evaluate the vehicle's performance in speed maintenance, driving distance, acceleration capabilities, and battery state-of-charge (SoC) dynamics. The results demonstrate that the vehicle exhibits strong output characteristics. Furthermore, the driver model incorporates an energy brake recovery function, which, when set to a 50% recovery efficiency, increases the driving distance by 25% compared to a vehicle without this function.

Abstract

This paper presents a protocol that optimizes message dissemination in C-V2X technology, crucial for advancing intelligent transportation systems (ITS) aimed at enhancing road safety. As vehicle density and velocity rise, the volume of data requiring communication significantly increases. By considering the risk levels that vehicles encounter and using inter-vehicle proximity as a key indicator of potential hazards, the proposed protocol prioritizes communication, allowing vehicles facing higher risks to transmit their messages first. Our results show that this prioritization effectively reduces the number of concurrent transmissions, leading to improved performance metrics such as packet delivery ratio, throughput, latency, and lower probabilities of channel congestion and collision.

Abstract

The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in academia is a subjective and hotly debated topic. Currently, there are no agreed guidelines towards the usage of GenAI systems in higher education (HE) and, thus, it is still unclear how to make effective use of the technology for teaching and learning practice. This paper provides an overview of the current state of research on GenAI for teaching and learning in HE. To this end, this study conducted a systematic review of relevant studies indexed by Scopus, using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The search criteria revealed a total of 625 research papers, of which 355 met the final inclusion criteria. The findings from the review showed the current state and the future trends in documents, citations, document sources/authors, keywords, and co-authorship. The research gaps identified suggest that while some authors have looked at understanding the detection of AI-generated text, it may be beneficial to understand how GenAI can be incorporated into supporting the educational curriculum for assessments, teaching, and learning delivery. Furthermore, there is a need for additional interdisciplinary, multidimensional studies in HE through collaboration. Abstract

The higher education (HE) sector benefits every nation's economy and society at large. However, their contributions are challenged by advanced technologies like generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive assessment of GenAI tools towards assessment and pedagogic practice and, subsequently, discuss the potential impacts. This study experimented using three assessment instruments from data science, data analytics, and construction management disciplines. Our findings are two-fold: first, the findings revealed that GenAI tools exhibit subject knowledge, problem-solving, analytical, critical thinking, and presentation skills and thus can limit learning when used unethically. Secondly, the design of the assessment of certain disciplines revealed the limitations of the GenAI tools. 7. Analysing the Influence of Macroeconomic Factors on Credit Risk in the UK Banking Sector

Abstract

Macroeconomic factors have a critical impact on banking credit risk, which cannot be directly controlled by banks, and therefore, there is a need for an early credit risk warning system based on the macroeconomy. By comparing different predictive models (traditional statistical and machine learning algorithms), this study aims to examine the macroeconomic determinants impact on the UK banking credit risk and assess the most accurate credit risk estimate using predictive analytics. This study found that the variance-based multi-split decision tree algorithm is the most precise predictive model with interpretable, reliable, and robust results. Our model performance achieved 95% accuracy and evidenced that unemployment and inflation rate are significant credit risk predictors in the UK banking context. Our findings provided valuable insights such as a positive association between credit risk and inflation, the unemployment rate, and national savings, as well as a negative relationship between credit risk and national debt, total trade deficit, and national income. In addition, we empirically showed the relationship between national savings and non-performing loans, thus proving the paradox of thrift. 8. Tertiary Students' Understanding of Sampling Distribution

Abstract

In this paper, the SOLO taxonomy is used to identify different levels of student understanding of the statistical concepts associated with sampling distribution. This study was part of a research project investigating students' conceptual understanding of concepts of hypothesis testing taught with the support of simulation learning activities. The study involved eight students enrolled in a first-year tertiary introductory statistics unit and the examination of their written responses to three questions about sampling distribution concepts. The SOLO taxonomy categorisations revealed that some students had only pre- and unistructural understanding of sampling distribution, and none providing responses at the extended abstract level.

Abstract

Despite the recent progress on scaling multilingual machine translation (MT) to several under-resourced African languages, accurately measuring this progress remains challenging, since evaluation is often performed on n-gram matching metrics such as BLEU, which typically show a weaker correlation with human judgments. Learned metrics such as COMET have higher correlation; however, the lack of evaluation data with human ratings for under-resourced languages, complexity of annotation guidelines like Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM), and limited language coverage of multilingual encoders have hampered their applicability to African languages. In this paper, we address these challenges by creating high-quality human evaluation data with simplified MQM guidelines for error detection and direct assessment (DA) scoring for 13 typologically diverse African languages. Furthermore, we develop AfriCOMET: COMET evaluation metrics for African languages by leveraging DA data from well-resourced languages and an African-centric multilingual encoder (AfroXLM-R) to create the state-of-the-art MT evaluation metrics for African languages with respect to Spearman-rank correlation with human judgments (0.441)., Comment: Accepted by NAACL 2024

Abstract

This paper presents findings on dynamic cell modeling for state-of-charge (SOC) estimation in an autonomous electric vehicle (AEV). The studied cells are Lithium-Ion Polymer-based with a nominal capacity of around 8Ah, optimized for power-needy applications. The AEV operates in a harsh environment with rate requirements up to +/-25C and highly dynamic rate profiles, unlike portable-electronic applications with constant power output and fractional C rates. SOC estimation methods effective in portable electronics may not suffice for the AEV. Accurate SOC estimation necessitates a precise cell model. The proposed SOC estimation method utilizes a detailed Kalman-filtering approach. The cell model must include SOC as a state in the model state vector. Multiple cell models are presented, starting with a simple one employing "Coulomb counting" as the state equation and Shepherd's rule as the output equation, lacking prediction of cell relaxation dynamics. An improved model incorporates filter states to account for relaxation and other dynamics in closed-circuit cell voltage, yielding better performance. The best overall results are achieved with a method combining nonlinear autoregressive filtering and dynamic radial basis function networks. The paper includes lab test results comparing physical cells with model predictions. The most accurate models obtained have an RMS estimation error lower than the quantization noise floor expected in the battery-management-system design. This paper aims to enhance our understanding of the critical factors that influence the acceptance of mobile payments in Nigeria by exploring the impact of network externalities in addition to conventional technology acceptance factors. It posits that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, trust, and network externality are the key drivers of mobile payment acceptance. The research findings indicate that while traditional drivers still have an impact on customer's willingness to adopt mobile payment, network externalities have the strongest influence. Abstract

Autonomous electric vehicles (AEVs) hold great promise for the future of automotive engineering, but safety remains a significant challenge in their development and commercialization. Therefore, conducting a comprehensive analysis of AEV development and reported accidents is crucial. This paper reviews the levels of automation in AEVs, their disengagement frequencies, and on-road accident reports. According to the report, numerous manufacturers thoroughly tested AEVs across a distance of more than 3.9 million miles between 2014 and 2022. Disengagement frequencies vary among manufacturers, and approximately 65% of accidents during this period occurred while AEVs were operating in autonomous mode. Notably, the majority of accidents (90%) were caused by other road users, with only a small fraction (approximately 8%) directly attributed to AEVs. Enhancing AEVs' ability to detect and mitigate safety risks from external sources has the potential to significantly improve their safety. This paper provides valuable insights into AEV safety by emphasizing the importance of comprehensively understanding AEV development and reported accidents. Through the analysis of disengagement and accident reports, the study highlights the prevalence of passive accidents caused by other road users. Future research should concentrate on enabling AEVs to effectively detect and respond to safety risks originating from external sources to enhance AEV safety. Overall, this analysis contributes to the ongoing efforts in AEV development and provides guidance for strategies aimed at improving their safety features.

Abstract

Abstract Background Fibroids are non-cancerous uterine growths that can cause symptoms impacting quality of life. The breadth of treatment options allows for patient-centered preference. While conversation aids are known to facilitate shared decision making, the implementation of these aids for uterine fibroids treatments is limited. We aimed to develop two end-user-acceptable uterine fibroids conversation aids for an implementation project. Our second aim was to outline the adaptations that were made to the conversation aids as implementation occurred. Methods We used a multi-phase user-centered participatory approach to develop a text-based and picture-enhanced conversation aid for uterine fibroids. We conducted a focus group with project stakeholders and user-testing interviews with eligible individuals with symptomatic uterine fibroids. We analyzed the results of the user-testing interviews using Morville’s Honeycomb framework. Spanish translations of the conversation aids occurred in parallel with the English iterations. We documented the continuous adaptations of the conversation aids that occurred during the project using an expanded framework for reporting adaptations and modifications to evidence-based interventions (FRAME). Results The first iteration of the conversation aids was developed in December 2018. Focus group participants (n = 6) appreciated the brevity of the tools and suggested changes to the bar graphs and illustrations used in the picture-enhanced version. User-testing with interview participants (n = 9) found that both conversation aids were satisfactory, with minor changes suggested. However, during implementation, significant changes were suggested by patients, other stakeholders, and participating clinicians when they reviewed the content. The most significant changes required the addition or deletion of information about treatment options as newer research was published or as novel interventions were introduced into clinical practice. Conclusions This multi-year project revealed the necessity of continuously adapting the uterine fibroids conversation aids so they remain acceptable in an implementation and sustainability context. Therefore, it is important to seek regular user feedback and plan for the need to undertake updates and revisions to conversation aids if they are going to be acceptable for clinical use.

Abstract

Abstract Background Exposure to chemical toxins, including insecticides, harms bodily organs like the brain. This study examined the neuroprotective of thymoquinone on the cypermethrin’s harmful effects on the histoarchitecture of the dentate gyrus and motor deficit in the dentate gyrus. Methods Forty adult male rats (180–200 g) were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 8 per group). Groups I, II, III, IV, and V received oral administration of 0.5 ml of phosphate-buffered saline, cypermethrin (20 mg/kg), thymoquinone (10 mg/kg), cypermethrin (20 mg/kg) + thymoquinone (5 mg/kg), and cypermethrin (20 mg/kg) + thymoquinone (10 mg/kg) for 14 days respectively. The novel object recognition test that assesses intermediate-term memory was done on days 14 and 21 of the experiment. At the end of these treatments, the animals were euthanized and taken for cytoarchitectural (hematoxylin and eosin; Cresyl violet) and immunohistochemical studies (Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), Parvalbumin, and B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl2). Result The study shows that thymoquinone at 5 and 10 mg/kg improved Novelty preference and discrimination index. Thymoquinone enhanced Nissl body integrity, increased GABBAergic interneuron expression, nuclear factor erythroid 2-derived factor 2, and enhanced Bcl-2 expression in the dentate gyrus. It also improved the concentration of nuclear factor erythroid 2-derived factor 2, increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione, and decreased the concentration of malondialdehyde level against cypermethrin-induced neurotoxicity. Conclusion thymoquinone could be a therapeutic agent against cypermethrin poisoning.

Abstract

This study investigated the best mix sawdust, bamboo leaves, and urea formaldehyde to create particleboard by optimizing the mixing ratio. Finding the optimal ratio of sawdust, urea formaldehyde, and bamboo leaves for the binders used in particle board production was the aim of this study. The particle boards' mechanical and physical tests were investigated. The surface morphology of particleboards and its elemental compositions were examined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The result observed from mechanical and physical tests conducted particle boards showed that best particleboard of composition 100 % sawdust, 50 % bamboo leaves and 2.5 g urea had the highest density of 675.643 kg/m3, modulus rupture of 3.84 N/mm2 and modulus elasticity of 2756 N/mm2. The optimal level generated by the experimental design of composition 50 % sawdust, 50 % bamboo leaves and 2.0 g urea were validated. MOR of 13.02 N/mm2 and MOE observed were 881.39 N/mm2. The SEM and EDS results revealed that optimal particleboard of validated experiment had surface with more fibrous network structures than particle board of the best process level. The particleboard that was produced from validated experiment complied with the American National Standard ANSI/A208.1–999.

The proliferation of cyber crimes is a huge concern for various stakeholders in the banking sector. Abstract

Timely and accurate monitoring of water quality is crucial to ensure their sustainable use and safeguard public health. Therefore, this study assessed surface water quality in Mubo River (SP1) and Sobi Dam (SP2) in Ilorin, using phytoplankton as baseline indicator organisms. Water samples were collected on July 20th (rain period) and December 20th (dry period), 2023, at a depth of 0.3 meters from the mid-water column. The physicochemical parameters of the water samples were determined using standard methods. The standard microscopic techniques were used for the enumeration and identification of phytoplankton genera. The findings showed that the pH and DO (mg/l) levels were within the permissible limit stipulated by the National Environmental Standard and Regulation Enforcement Agency for Surface Water in Nigeria (NESREA). The BOD (mg/l) and COD (mg/l) levels were above the permissible limit for SP1 for both seasons. The 8 genera of pollution-tolerant phytoplankton recorded were Cyclotella, Chlorophyta, Chlorella, Closterium, Chlamydomonas, Micractinium, Microcystis, Euglena and Phacus with Chlorella had the highest abundance percentage in all the sampling sites. The Shannon diversity indices values indicate lower phytoplankton species diversity (H ≤ 1.99) in all the water samples. The Palmer’s pollution index (PPI) scores were in the range of 14 to 18 in the sampling sites. Palmer's index suggests likely high organic pollution in Mubo Rivers' in both sampling periods. A notable high level of organic pollution was recorded in Sobi Dam only during the rainy season. The BOD (mg/l) and COD (mg/l) levels were above the permissible limit for SP1 for both seasons. The 8 genera of pollution-tolerant phytoplankton recorded were Cyclotella, Chlorella, Closterium, Chlamydomonas, Micractinium, Microcystis, Euglena, and Phacus, with Chlorella having the highest abundance percentage in all the sampling sites. The Shannon diversity indices values indicate lower phytoplankton species diversity (H ≤ 1.99) in all the water samples. Abstract

Both tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19 are infectious diseases with similar clinical manifestations, which mainly affect the lungs. Clinical studies have revealed that the immunosuppressive drugs taken by COVID-19 patients can affect the immunological functions in the body, which can cause the patients to contract active TB via a new infection or reinfection, and the co-infection of the two diseases portends a clinical complexity in the management of the patients. Thus, this paper presents a mathematical model to study the dynamics and control of COVID-19-TB co-infection. The full model of the co-infection is split into two submodels, namely, the TB-only and the COVID-19-only models. The equilibria of the disease-free and endemic situations of the two sub-models are shown to be globally asymptotically stable when their control reproduction numbers $ R_{o}^{TV}, R_{o}^{CV} < 1 $ and $ \tilde {R}_{o}^{TV}, \tilde {R}_{o}^{CV} > 1 $, respectively. However, the disease-free equilibrium of the co-infection model was found to lose its global stability property when the reproduction number $ R_{o}^{F} < 1 $, therefore exhibiting a backward bifurcation. Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the associated reproduction number of the full model has been performed by using the Latin hypercube sampling/Pearson rank correlation coefficient (LHS/PRCC) method. The rate of transmission of COVID-19 and the proportions of individuals vaccinated with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) and against COVID-19 were found to be highly significant in the spread and control of COVID-19-TB co-infection. Furthermore, the simulation results show that decreasing the COVID-19 transmission rate and increasing the proportion of people vaccinated with BCG and against COVID-19 can lower the number of cases of COVID-19-TB co-infection. Therefore, measures to reduce the transmission rate and the provision of adequate resources to increase the proportions of people vaccinated against TB and COVID-19 should be implemented to minimize the cases of co-infection.

Abstract

The high prevalence of nutrition-related health issues has spurred a growing interest in developing healthier snack alternatives. The aim of this study therefore was to develop and assess the sensory as well as the nutritional properties of biscuits supplemented with Vernonia amygdalina leaf (VA) and Heteroclarias spp viscera oil. Four biscuit samples were developed: one without Vernonia amygdalina and fish oil (labeled BWVF) and three others containing increasing quantities of VA (BWVF-1 g, BWVF-2 g, and BWVF-3 g). A commercially purchased conventional biscuit (CB) was utilized as a control. Physicochemical parameters of fish viscera oil, proximate analysis and sensory evaluation using a 9-point hedonic scale was carried out on the formulated biscuits. Results showed that the physicochemical properties of the fish viscera oil were within range recommended for edible oil. Carbohydrate was significantly lower (p < 0.05) in BWVF- 1 g, BWVF- 2 g and BWVF- 3 g in a dose dependent manner compared to the CB, while percentage crude protein, lipid and ash contents increased significantly (p < 0.05) compared to CB. The rating of appearance, texture/consistency, crunchiness, and overall acceptability of the test biscuits were not significantly different (p > 0.05) to CB. However, there was a dose-dependent decrease in the ratings for the taste of BWVF-1 g, BWVF-2 g and BWVF-3g compared to CB and BWVF. In conclusion, Vernonia amygdalina and fish oil-supplemented biscuits have good sensory evaluation and contain nutrients that can contribute to the daily nutritional and caloric needs of consumers.

Abstract

The torrefaction of biomass generated from by-products of post-harvest agricultural activities such as corncob or woody residues from saw milling, pruning, and furniture production such as African birch wood, are renewable energy sources whose pyrolytic and combustion properties are crucial during process heating in various applications. This study investigated the combustion characteristics of corncob and African birch wood residues at a higher heating rate and their comparative energy qualities. Samples of corncob and African birch wood residues were collected, sorted, pulverised into particles, and torrefied independently. The raw and torrefied corncob and African birch wood particles were screened into 0.3, 0.5, and 1.0 mm sizes, and their thermogravimetric, proximate, ultimate, heating values, and energy quality analyses were carried out. The torrefied biomass showed better pyrolytic and combustion characteristics relative to the raw samples. However, African birch wood residues appear to be better than corncob residues. The higher heating values (HHVs) ranged from 21.46 to 21.63 MJ/kg and 23.1 to 25.6 MJ/kg for the torrefied samples of corncob and African birch wood residues, respectively. The torrefied sample of African birch wood residues exhibited the highest HHV (25.6 MJ/kg), which compared favourably with the value from a low-rank coal, such as lignite or brown coal. Torrefied African birch wood residues, with their high HHV, can be densified to replace low-rank coal and firewood in a variety of applications.

Abstract

Oral manifestations of disseminated histoplasmosis are rare but can present in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of disseminated Histoplasmosis presenting with presumed oral involvement and Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in a seropositive HIV individual. A 32-year-old male with HIV presented to the emergency department for a two-week history of abdominal pain and a tongue ulcer in the setting of significant weight loss, blood-tinged sputum, and non-adherence with antiretroviral therapy for three years. Physical exam revealed a verrucous ulcer on the lateral aspect of the tongue. CT scan of the chest revealed diffuse bilateral pulmonary nodules and ground glass opacities. At presentation, his CD4 + count was 12 cells/mm3. During his hospitalization, he developed acute hypoxic respiratory failure requiring non-invasive ventilation. His urine histoplasma antigen was positive at greater than 25 ng/mL and liposomal amphotericin was started. Shortly thereafter, Pneumocystis jirovecii PCR on bronchoalveolar lavage returned positive prompting additional therapy with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. At discharge, the patient had no respiratory symptoms and near-resolution of his tongue ulcer.

Abstract

Reactive Black 5 (RB-5) dye is extensively used in industries such as textile, paper, and leather, raising environmental concerns due to its persistence and adverse effects. This study aimed to develop efficient and eco-friendly strategies for RB-5 dye removal from industrial wastewater. RB-5 dye-degrading bacteria, namely NAF1, NAF2, NAF3, and NAF4, were isolated from soil contaminated with textile effluents. Evaluation of their decolorization potential revealed NAF4 as the most effective, achieving a decolorization percentage of 89%, followed by NAF3 and the co-culture at 75% and 73%, respectively. NAF2 exhibited the lowest decolorization potential. The isolate NAF4 showed significant production of tyrosinase and laccase enzymes, with lower quantities of lignin peroxidase and azoreductase. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the identities of the isolates as Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Escherichia, and Citrobacter. The decolorization potential exhibited by Bacillus wiedmannii NAF4 has instigated the investigation of its capacity to secrete degradative enzymes implicated in the breakdown of azo dyes. Substantial enzyme production was observed over a duration of 192 hours. The biodegradation potential of B. wiedmannii strain NAF4 for RB-5 dye was assessed using Surface Response Optimization (SRO) modeling. The optimized conditions for RB-5 degradation were determined to be an agitation speed of 115.777 rpm, pH of 7.449, inoculum size of 12.255, and temperature of 29.74°C. ABSTRACT: A 35-d study investigated the impact of dietary supplementation with Arginine (Arg) or branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) of broilers receiving low-protein diets whilst infected with mixed Eimeria species. All birds were given the same starter (d0–10) and finisher (d28–35) diets. The 4 grower diets used were a positive control (PC) with adequate protein (18.5%), a low protein diet (NC;16.5% CP), or the NC supplemented with Arg or BCAA. Supplemental AA was added at 50% above the recommended levels. The treatments were in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 4 diets, with or without Eimeria inoculation on d14. Birds and feed were weighed after inoculation in phases: prepatent (d14–17), acute (d18–21), recovery (d22–28), and compensatory (d29–35). Ileal digesta, jejunum, and breast tissue were collected on d21, 28, and 35. There was no diet × Eimeria inoculation on growth performance at any phase. Infected birds weighed less and consumed less feed (P < 0.05) in all phases. In the prepatent and acute phases, birds on the Arg diets had higher weight gain (P < 0.05) and lower FCR, similar to PC, when compared to NC and BCAA-fed ones. Infection reduced AA digestibility on d21 and 28 (Met and Cys). However, birds that received supplemental AA had higher digestibility (P < 0.05) of their respective supplemented AA on d 21 only. Infected birds had lower (P < 0.05) BO + AT and higher PEPT1 expression on d21. There was a diet × Eimeria interaction (P = 0.004) on gene expression at d28; 4EBP1 genes were significantly downwardly expressed (P < 0.05) in birds fed Arg diet, irrespective of infection. Infected birds exhibited an upward expression (P < 0.05) of Eef2 on d21 and d28 but experienced a downward expression on d35. Supplemental Arg and BCAA had variable effects on growth performance, apparent ileal AA digestibility, and genes of protein synthesis and degradation, but the effect of Arg on promoting weight gain, irrespective of the Eimeria challenge, was more consistent.

Abstract

Termites are widely dispersed throughout the tropics and attain the highest diversity and abundance in the rainforests of Africa. Understanding their diversity in areas with human activities can provide insights into the local biodiversity and health of the ecosystem. The present study investigated the abundance and diversity of termite species at the Kwara State University campus. The study area was divided into five zones, and thorough examinations of all microhabitats were conducted to detect termite presence. Random handpicking and transect sampling methods were employed to evaluate termite diversity. There were 353 instances of termites encountered between May 2021 and August 2022. The analysis revealed eight termite species in seven genera and three subfamilies. Among these, Trinervitermes geminatus had the highest relative abundance at 48.7 %, whereas Fulleritermes tenebricus had the lowest at 1.98 %. All identified species belonged to the family Termitidae, with subfamilies Nasutitermitinae accounting for 50.7 %, Macrotermitinae for 37.7 %, and Termitinae for 11.6 % of the species. Grass-feeding Trinervitermes geminatus was the most frequently collected species, followed by fungus-growing Macrotermes subhyalinus; both were found across all five campus zones. The species diversity and richness indices observed in the five zones were moderately high. The considerable abundance of termites within the university campus suggests their significance in the ecosystem. There is a need to document termite species present in an ecosystem with human activities because it helps to monitor biodiversity loss in the environment.

Abstract

Macroeconomic factors have a critical impact on banking credit risk, which cannot be directly controlled by banks, and therefore, there is a need for an early credit risk warning system based on the macroeconomy. By comparing different predictive models (traditional statistical and machine learning algorithms), this study aims to examine the macroeconomic determinants’ impact on the UK banking credit risk and assess the most accurate credit risk estimate using predictive analytics. This study found that the variance-based multi-split decision tree algorithm is the most precise predictive model with interpretable, reliable, and robust results. Our model performance achieved 95% accuracy and evidenced that unemployment and inflation rate are significant credit risk predictors in the UK banking context. Our findings provided valuable insights such as a positive association between credit risk and inflation, the unemployment rate, and national savings, as well as a negative relationship between credit risk and national debt, total trade deficit, and national income. In addition, we empirically showed the relationship between national savings and non-performing loans, thus proving the “paradox of thrift”. These findings benefit the credit risk management team in monitoring the macroeconomic factors’ thresholds and implementing critical reforms to mitigate credit risk.
