Phonon-polaritons, mixed excitations of light coupled to lattice vibrations (phonons), are emerging as a powerful platform for nanophotonic applications. This is because of their ability to concentrate light into extreme sub-wavelength scales and because of their longer phonon lifetimes than their plasmonic counterparts. In this work, the infrared properties of phonon-polaritonic nanoresonators made of monoisotopic B-10 hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) are explored, a material with increased phonon-polariton lifetimes compared to naturally abundant h-BN due to reduced photon scattering from randomly distributed isotopes. An average relative improvement of 50% in the nanoresonators Q factor is obtained with respect of nanoresonators made of naturally abundant h-BN. Moreover, the monoisotopic h-BN nano-ribbon arrays are used to sense nanometric-thick films of molecules, both through surface-enhanced absorption spectroscopy and refractive index sensing. In addition, strong coupling is achieved between a molecular vibration and the phonon-polariton resonance in monoisotopic h-BN ribbons.

We study the selective excitation at infrared and THz frequencies of optical and acoustic plasmonic modes supported by thin topological insulators. These modes are characterized by effective net charge or net spin density, respectively, and we study their excitation by combining many-body and electromagnetic calculations. We first show that non-locality can significantly modify the plasmonic response: it changes the energy of propagating plasmons up to tens of percent. We then discuss how, by changing the distance between a dipolar source and a semi-infinite 10 nm thin film, it is possible to control the excitation of acoustic and optical propagating plasmons, which can propagate over a distance of several plasmonic wavelengths. Furthermore, we consider 10 nm thin TI nanodisks and study the excitation of acoustic and optical localized plasmon modes by a point dipole source and plane wave illumination, respectively. The resonant plasmonic modes appear at frequencies that strongly depends on the size of the disk, and that can be potentially tuned by applying electrostatic gating to modify the Fermi Energy of the conductive 2-dimensional layer that forms at the interfaces of the TI. We observe a spectral shift from ~29 $\mu$m to ~34 $\mu$m by changing the Fermi Energy from 250meV to 350meV. Last, the electromagnetic energy of these plasmonics modes can be confined to very small regions, of effective volume ~(120 nm)^3 for the smaller disk considered, much less than the free-space wavelength cubed $\lambda$^3 ~(35000 nm)^3. The strong confinement is desirable for achieving very efficient coupling with nearby systems. Our detailed study thus shows that thin topological insulators are a promising system to control both the spin and charge oscillations associated with the plasmonic resonances, with possible applications to fast, compact and electrically-controlled spintronics devices., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. We investigate the interplay of shape changes and localized surface plasmons in small metal particles with the potential of a large enhancement of the Raman signal from the particles own vibrations. The framework is a geometrical one where we study the change in geometric factors during the vibrational movement. The resulting cross-section is found to be of a detectable order of magnitude however much smaller than the elastic cross-section., Comment: 12 pages

The optical response of a coupled nanowire dimer is studied using a fully quantum mechanical approach. The translational invariance of the system allows to apply the time--dependent density functional theory for the plasmonic dimer with the largest size considered so far in quantum calculations. Detailed comparisons with results from classical electromagnetic calculations based on local and non local hydrodynamic response, as well as with results of the recently developed quantum corrected model is performed. We show that electron tunneling and dynamical screening are the major nonlocal quantum effects determining the plasmonic modes and field enhancement in the system. Account for the electron tunneling at small junction sizes allows semi-quantitative description of quantum results within classical framework. We also discuss the shortcomings of classical treatments using non-local dielectric permittivities based on hydrodynamic models. Finally, the implications of the actual position of the screening charge density for the plasmon ruler applications are demonstrated., Comment: article

Theory predicts a distinct spectral shift between the near- and far-field optical responses of plasmonic antennas. Here we combine near-field optical microscopy and far-field spectroscopy of individual infrared-resonant nanoantennas to verify experimentally this spectral shift. High-permittivity dielectric particles with resonant magnetic properties are being explored as constitutive elements of new metamaterials and devices in the microwave regime. Magnetic properties of low-loss dielectric nanoparticles in the visible or infrared are not expected due to intrinsic low refractive index of optical materials in these regimes. Here we analyze the dipolar electric and magnetic response of loss-less dielectric spheres made of moderate permittivity materials. For low material refractive index there are no sharp resonances due to strong overlapping between different multipole contributions. However, we find that Silicon particles with refractive index 3.5 and radius approx. 200nm present a dipolar and strong magnetic resonant response in telecom and near-infrared frequencies, (i.e. at wavelengths approx. 1.2-2 micrometer). Moreover, the light scattered by these Si particles can be perfectly described by dipolar electric and magnetic fields, quadrupolar and higher order contributions being negligible., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The response of gold nanoparticle dimers is studied theoretically near and beyond the limit where the particles are touching. As the particles approach each other, a dominant dipole feature is observed that is pushed into the infrared due to interparticle coupling and that is associated with a large pileup of induced charge in the interparticle gap. The redshift becomes singular as the particle separation decreases. The response weakens for very small separation when the coupling across the interparticle gap becomes so strong that dipolar oscillations across the pair are inhibited. Lower-wavelength, higher-order modes show a similar separation dependence in nearly touching dimers. After touching, singular behavior is observed through the emergence of a new infrared absorption peak, also accompanied by huge charge pileup at the interparticle junction, if initial interparticle-contact is made at a single point. This new mode is distinctly different from the lowest mode of the separated dimer. When the junction is made by contact between flat surfaces, charge at the junction is neutralized and mode evolution is continuous through contact. The calculated singular response explains recent experiments on metallic nanoparticle dimers and is relevant in the design of nanoparticle-based sensors and plasmon circuits.
