Abstract

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic polymer produced from lactic acid that has been chiefly utilized in biodegradable material and as a composite matrix material. PLA is a prominent biomaterial that is widely used to replace traditional petrochemical-based polymers in various applications owing environmental concerns. Green composites have gained greater attention as ecological consciousness has grown since they have the potential to be more appealing than conventional petroleum-based composites, which are toxic and nonbiodegradable. PLA-based composites with natural fiber have been extensively utilized in a variety of applications, from packaging to medicine, due to their biodegradable, recyclable, high mechanical strength, low toxicity, good barrier properties, friendly processing, and excellent characteristics. A summary of natural fibers, green composites, and PLA, along with their respective properties, classification, functionality, and different processing methods, are discussed to discover the natural fiber-reinforced PLA composite material development for a wide range of applications. This work also emphasizes the research and properties of PLA-based green composites, PLA blend composites, and PLA hybrid composites over the past few years. PLA’s potential as a strong material in engineering applications areas is addressed. This review also covers issues, challenges, opportunities, and perspectives in developing and characterizing PLA-based green composites.

Abstract

This paper reviews the mechanical performance of bamboo fibre reinforced polymer composites (BFRPs) for structural applications. Bamboo fibres are very promising reinforcements for polymer composites production due to their high aspect ratio, renewability, environmentally friendly, non-toxicity, cheap cost, non-abrasives, full biodegradability, and strong mechanical performances. Besides, bamboo has its own prospects and good potential to be used in biopolymer composites as an alternative for petroleum-based materials to be used in several advanced applications in the building and construction industry. For bamboo fibre to be reinforced with polymer, they must have good interfacial bond between the polymer, as better fibre and matrix interaction results in good interfacial adhesion between fibre/matrix and fewer voids in the composite. Several important factors to improve matrix-fibre bonding and enhance the mechanical properties of BFRP are by fibre treatment, hybridisation, lamination, and using coupling agent. Moreover, mechanical properties of BFRP are greatly influenced by few factors, such as type of fibre and matrix used, fibre-matrix adhesion, fibre dispersion, fibre orientation, composite manufacturing technique used, void content in composites, and porosity of composite. In order to better understand their reinforcing potential, the mechanical properties of this material is critically discussed in this review paper. In addition, the advantages of bamboo fibres as the reinforcing phase in polymer composites is highlighted in this review paper. Besides that, the bamboo-based products such as laminated bamboo lumber, glued-laminated bamboo, hybrid bamboo polymer composites, parallel bamboo strand lumber, parallel strand bamboo, bamboo-oriented strand board, and bamboo-scrimber have lately been developed and used in structural applications.

Abstract

Developments in the synthesis and scalable manufacturing of carbon nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been widely used in the polymer material industry over the last few decades, resulting in a series of fascinating multifunctional composites used in fields ranging from portable electronic devices, entertainment and sports to the military, aerospace, and automotive sectors. CNTs offer good thermal and electrical properties, as well as a low density and a high Young’s modulus, making them suitable nanofillers for polymer composites. As mechanical reinforcements for structural applications CNTs are unique due to their nano-dimensions and size, as well as their incredible strength. Although a large number of studies have been conducted on these novel materials, there have only been a few reviews published on their mechanical performance in polymer composites. As a result, in this review we have covered some of the key application factors as well as the mechanical properties of CNTs-reinforced polymer composites. Finally, the potential uses of CNTs hybridised with polymer composites reinforced with natural fibres such as kenaf fibre, oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fibre, bamboo fibre, and sugar palm fibre have been highlighted.

Abstract

Sambas adalah salah satu Kesultanan Melayu yang cukup lama eksis di tanah Borneo. Kerajaan Islam Sambas atau yang disebut Kesultanan Sambas berdiri pada paruh kedua pertengahan abad ke-17 M. Kesultanan Sambas terkenal besar sejak sultan Sambas yang pertama Sultan Muhammad Syafiuddin I (1631-1668 M). Kejayaan Kesultanan Sambas telah membesarkan nama negeri Sambas, sampai pada Sultan Sambas ke-15 yaitu Sultan Muhammad Mulia Ibrahim Syafiuddin (1931-1943 M). Raden Muhammad Mulia Ibrahim adalah putra Pangeran Adipati Ahmad bin Sultan Muhammad Syafiuddin II. Pendidikan awal Raden Muhammad Mulia Ibrahim diperolehnya dari lingkungan keluarga terutama pendidikan yang diterapkan oleh kakeknya sendiri Sultan Muhammad Syafiuddin II dan ayahnya Raden Ahmad. Sebelum dinobatkan, pada tanggal 2 Mei 1931 M, Belanda mengikat kontrak politik dengan Sultan Muhammad Mulia Ibrahim Syafiuddin, bahwa penyelenggaraan pemerintahan Kerajaan Sambas harus menyesuaikan diri dengan ketentuan yang termaktub dalam Staatsblad Pemerintah Hindia Belanda yang disebut dengan Korte Verklaring atau Akte Van Vereband . Kepada sultan sebagai Het Zelfbestuur dikuasakan oleh pemerintah Hindia Belanda antara lain untuk melaksanakan hukum agama Islam dan hukum adat. Adapun peran Sultan Muhammad Mulia Ibrahim Syafiuddin dalam pengembangan Islam meliputi pembaruan di bidang pendidikan Islam, revitalisasi lembaga peradilan agama dan pranata sosial keagamaan. Oleh sebab itu, penting untuk mengetahui dan mengkaji kembali bagaimana peran Sultan Muhammad Mulia Ibrahim Syafiuddin, khususnya dalam revitalisasi lembaga peradilan agama di Kesultanan Sambas 1931-1943.

39. Effects of Fabric Counts and Weave Designs on the Properties of Laminated Woven Kenaf/Carbon Fibre Reinforced Epoxy Hybrid Composites.

Abstract

The effects of different fabric materials namely weave designs (plain and satin) and fabric counts (5 × 5 and 6 × 6) on the properties of laminated woven kenaf/carbon fibre reinforced epoxy hybrid composites were evaluated. The hybrid composites were fabricated from two types of fabric, i.e., woven kenaf that was made from a yarn of 500tex and carbon fibre, by using vacuum infusion technique and epoxy resin as matrix. The panels were tested for tensile, flexural, and impact strengths. The results have revealed that plain fabric is more suitable than satin fabric for obtaining high tensile and impact strengths. Using a fabric count of 5 × 5 has generated composites that are significantly higher in flexural modulus as compared to 6 × 6 which may be attributed to their structure and design. The scanned electron micrographs of the fractured surfaces of the composites demonstrated that plain woven fabric composites had better adhesion properties than satin woven fabric composites, as indicated by the presence of notably lower amount of fibre pull out.
