In this paper, we present results from of a large-scale replication of Hodgson and Rothman's (1999) seminal analysis of the institutional and geographical concentration of authors publishing in top economic journals. We analyze bibliometric data of more than 49.000 articles published in a set of 30 highly influential economic journals between 1990 and 2018. Based on a random sample of 3.253 authors, we further analyze the PhD-granting institutions of the authors under study to better scrutinize the claim of an institutional oligopoly. The findings confirm the long-term persistence of strong oligopolistic structures in terms of both, author affiliations as well as PhD-granting institutions.

The accumulation of new technological capabilities is of high empirical relevance, both for the development of countries and the business success of firms. In this paper, we aim to delineate strategies how these processes of capability accumulation can be considered more accurately in comprehensive macroeconomic models. To this end, we conduct an interdisciplinary review of the literature specialized on capability accumulation by analyzing both empirical as well as theoretical literature on the firm and aggregated level. In doing so, we collect evidence various determinants and mechanisms of capability accumulation and align them with the current representation of capability accumulation in macroeconomic models. Based on these results, we make some suggestions on how macroeconomists may integrate these determinants derived from the specialized literature into their models.

Trade liberalization during the neoliberal era since the 1980s has been on the political agenda of many countries. However, in recent years and especially in the course of rising populist movements, protectionist measures seem to be gaining importance again. Nationalist economic policies challenge the overly positive view on economic integration and the reduction of trade barriers established by standard economic theory. In contrast to politicians, for quite a long time the great majority of economists explicitly publicly supported trade liberalization policies. In this paper, we show how trade and trade related policies are addressed and framed in professional economic discourses. Thus, we follow a mixed-method-approach and combine quantitative textual analysis with critical discourse analysis to highlight dominant narratives and imaginaries present in these debates. By analyzing more than 400 trade-related research articles published in high-impact economic journals we highlight three core trade narratives which constitute the elite economists trade discourse: First, "free trade cheerleading" describes a clear link between the alleged lopsidedness of economists in favoring free trade (policies) in the public and academic debate. Second, "Ignorance in a world full of nails" relates to particular methodological and conceptual leanings in the profession, which seem to deepen the dominance of an overall positive evaluation of trade. And third, "success breeds exporting breeds success" postulates a positive causal relation between a firm's economic performance and its export orientation. We conclude that the narrow perspective in economic elite debates prevents a more comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted challenges related to international integration.

In the aftermath of recent populist upheavals in Europe, the U.S., the UK and other areas around the world, nationalist economic policies challenge the overly positive view on economic integration and the reduction of trade barriers established by standard economic theory. For quite a long time the great majority of economists supported trade liberalization policies, at least those, who were actively engaged in policy advice or public debates. Yet it was hardly investigated whether this general support emerges from a consensus view among economists on this issue or whether only a partisan interpretation of economic expertise is used to serve a distinct political purpose. Against this background, in this paper we examine the elite economics discourse on trade and trade policies by applying a multilevel mixedmethod approach. In doing so we combine quantitative methods with a discourse analytical approach in order to examine dominant narratives and imaginaries present in high impact papers dealing with trade, globalization and related policy issues. Our analysis yields the following results: First, the hierarchical structure of economics is also present in the economic debate on trade. Second, the top economic discourse on trade is predominantly characterized by a normative bias in favor of trade liberalization policies leading to a systematically underestimation of negative effects of free trade policies. Third, we found that other-thaneconomic impacts and implications (political, social and cultural as well as environmental issues) of trade policies either remain unmentioned or are rationalized by means of pure economic criteria. To sum up, we conclude that the narrow perspective present in top economics discourse on trade prevents a more comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted gains and challenges related to the issue of international integration.

Vor dem Hintergrund der fortdauernden Diskussion zu adäquaten Formen der Auftragsvergabe im Schienenpersonenverkehr, untersucht die vorliegende Studie den Zusammenhang zwischen der Form der Auftragsvergabe und dem Umfang, den Kosten sowie der Qualität öffentlicher Verkehrsdienstleistungen. Eine solche Analyse trägt insofern zu aktuellen Debatten der Verkehrspolitik bei, als zur Zeit kein systematischer, internationaler Vergleich zur Frage dieses Zusammenhangs im Schienenpersonenverkehr vorliegt. Ein solcher Vergleich soll dabei helfen, die Effektivität und Brauchbarkeit unterschiedlicher Vergabemodi in Europa sowie ihre Folgen auf die Entwicklung des öffentlich finanzierten Personenverkehrs besser abschätzen zu können. Zu diesem Zweck werden im Rahmen der Studie aktuell relevante theoretische und empirische Beiträge überblicksartig diskutiert. Ein wesentliches Resümee dieser Zusammenschau zur aktuellen wissenschaftlichen Literatur ist dabei, dass zu den Folgen einer stärkeren Markt- und Wettbewerbsorientierung im Rahmen der Auftragsvergabe weder eindeutige theoretische Argumente noch schlagende empirische Befunde vorliegen. Vielmehr ist die zeitgenössische Literatur durch sich widersprechende theoretische und empirische Argumente gekennzeichnet, die keine eindeutigen Schlüsse hinsichtlich den Auswirkungen einer erhöhten Marktorientierung zulassen. Um zur Schließung dieser Forschungslücke beizutragen entwickelt die vorliegende Studie abschließend einen eigenen empirischen Ansatz um die Folgen und Effekte einer stärkeren Marktorientierung im internationalen Vergleich und mit quantitativen Methoden zu untersuchen. Zu diesem Zwecke wurden Daten unterschiedlicher Quellen kombiniert um inhärente und teils drastische Limitationen in bestehenden Datenbeständen zumindest teilweise zu kompensieren. Die Ergebnisse der hieraus resultierenden statistischen Analysen zeigen, dass eine größere Markt- und Wettbewerbsorientierung im internationalen Mittel in einem negativen Zusammenhang mit dem erbrachten Leistungsvolumen und der damit verbundenen Leistungsqualität steht. Diese Schätzergebnisse sind dabei zwar statistisch signifikant, zeigen aber nur geringe Effektgrößen - ein Umstand, der als Indiz dafür verstanden werden kann, dass der Grad der Markt- und Wettbewerbsorientierung in der Auftragsvergabe für die effektive Performance des Eisenbahnwesens nur von nachrangiger Bedeutung ist. Darüber hinaus legen die in dieser Studie präsentierten Ergebnisse nahe, dass eine größere Marktorientierung im Eisenbahnsektor nicht notwendigerweise zu einer Reduktion der Aufwendungen der öffentlichen Hand führt. In Kombination mit den Ergebnissen des Literaturüberblicks muss vielmehr angenommen werden, dass die Determinanten eines effizienten und leistungsfähigen Eisenbahnwesens weniger in der jeweils gewählten Vergabeform als in der kontextadäquaten und professionellen Umsetzung dieser jeweiligen Vergabeformen zu finden sind. Insofern bieten diese Ergebnisse Anlass, bestehende Reformbemühungen in Europa, die auf eine Stärkung der Marktorientierung im Eisenbahnwesen abzielen, kritisch zu reflektieren, obgleich die vorliegenden Ergebnisse sicher nicht als abschließend bezeichnet werden können: Weiterführende Analysen scheinen für eine abschließende Beurteilung dabei mindestens ebenso notwendig wie eine (massive) Verbesserung der verfügbaren Datenbestände, deren grundlegende Limitationen auch in der vorliegenden Arbeit nur teilweise überwunden werden können.

Has the global financial crisis of 2007ff had a visible impact on the economics profession? To answer this question we employ a bibliometric approach and compare the content and orientation of economic literature before and after the crisis with reference to two different samples: A large-scale sample consisting of more than 440,000 articles published between 1956 and 2016 and a smaller sample of 400 top-cited papers before and after the crisis. Our results suggest that - unlike the Great Depression of the 1930s - the current financial crisis did not lead to any major theoretical or methodological changes in contemporary economics, although the topic of financial instability received increased attention after the crisis.

Citation metrics and its related indices and rankings become increasingly important in the evaluation of research. Such indices are part of a more general tendency aiming for the simplification of complex and interconnected phenomena through quantification. The purpose of our contribution is to analyze the impact of such quantitative indices on the further development of science with a special emphasis on economics. In this case we observe a multitude of interesting effects on both, the level of individual scientists as well as the global development of the discipline.

Zitationsmessungen und darauf basierende Indices und Ranglisten spielen eine immer wesentlichere Rolle im Wissenschaftsbetrieb, insbesondere im Rahmen der Bewertung und Evaluierung von Forschungsleistungen. Die Etablierung quantitativer Evaluationsroutinen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb steht dabei symptomatisch fuer einen umfassenderen sozialen Trend komplexe Sachverhalte durch ihre numerische Fassung scheinbar oder tatsaechlich zu vereinfachen. In diesem Kontext versucht dieser Beitrag die Auswirkungen wissenschaftsstatistischer Evaluationsverfahren auf die weitere Wissenschaftsentwicklung zu analysieren und dabei insbesondere das Beispiel der oekonomischen Disziplin in den Blick zu nehmen. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Macht der (evaluativen) Wissenschaftsstatistik vielfaeltige Auswirkungen hervorbringt: So werden akademische Reproduktionslogiken, das Verhalten einzelner AkteurInnen im Wissenschaftsbetrieb sowie die paradigmatische Entwicklung von Disziplinen durch wissenschaftsstatistische Verfahren beeinflusst.

Die Frage nach dem Wesen der Gerechtigkeit ist eine in Oekonomie, Politik und Philosophie umstrittene Frage. Die nachstehende Zusammenschau von philosophischen Argumenten zum Wesen und dem rechten Verstaendnis von "Gerechtigkeit" als normativem Konzept versucht dabei nicht nur einen groben Ueberblick zur Rolle von Gerechtigkeit in der Geschichte philosophischen Denkens sowie der zeitgenoessischen politischen Philosophie zu bieten, sondern auch eine polit-oekonomische Perspektive in die philosophische Diskussion rund um Fragen der Gerechtigkeit zu integrieren. Eine solche Perspektive ist dabei geeignet die Anwendung abstrakter philosophischer Konzepte auf konkrete wirtschafts- und verteilungspolitische Fragestellung zu ermoeglichen.
