The objective of this work was to evaluate the physiological variables of the cultivar Opuntia stricta (Haw.) Haw in the first cycle and in the regrowth, under different frequencies of drip irrigation, cultivated in the Agreste da Paraíba mesoregion. Therefore, a randomized block design was used, with 2 treatments (irrigation frequencies) and 4 replications (blocks), with each treatment repeated 3 times within the block (triplicate) totaling 24 experimental plots. For physiological variables, data were evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and means compared by t test at 5% probability using SAS ® (2002). The present study shows that the stress of environmental conditions had a greater impact on the frequency of irrigation every 28 days, since the forage cactus irrigated every 7 days had the highest internal concentration of CO2; CO2 absorption rate; instant efficiency in water use; intrinsic efficiency of water use; instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, both in the first cycle and in the regrowth period. Respiratory rate and stomatal conductance did not differ between irrigation frequencies for both cycles, showing the good adaptation of the cultivar to the semiarid region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective was to evaluate the morphometric, productive and chemical aspects of purple elephant grass as a function of nitrogen fertilization. The treatments consisted of applying 0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 kg ha-1 of N, using a randomized block design, with five treatments and four replications. The following were evaluated: plant height, number, length and leaf mass, stem diameter and mass, leaf/stem ratio, production of green and dry mass, support capacity for dairy cows, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and mineral matter. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey's test at 5% probability. The increase in N doses did not affect (p < 0.05) the morphometry of the purple elephant grass, however it positively stimulated the productivity, the animal support capacity and the bromatological components of the harvested material. The lack of response to nitrogen fertilization may be related to the edaphocilimatic conditions during the experiment and efficiency in the use of N of the variety used. The genetic improvement program for Opuntia spp. aims to select new genotypes to meet the demands of rural producers in the Brazilian Semiarid region and to expand the genetic base of the crop. This study aimed to select accessions of Opuntia spp. with forager potential and resistance to false carmine cochineal. The research was carried out at the Active Germplasm Bank (BAG) of Opuntia spp. of Paraíba Company Research, Rural Extension and Land Regularization (EMPAER), Pendência Experimental Station, Soledade, State of Paraíba, Brazil. Accessions were cultivated in rainfed and evaluated in August 2019, 12 months after the implementation of the BAG. The measurement of the Total Green Mass weight of the plants of 121 accessions of the BAG was carried out and the productivity (ton ha-1) was estimated in dense cultivation of 100 thousand plants ha-1. The accessions of Opuntia spp. n° 10, 110, 115, and 119 have growth potential in the Brazilian Semiarid region, as a function of productivity (532.6, 118, 164, and 481 tons ha-1, respectively) and resistance to false carmine cochineal, in addition to genetic divergence (specific agronomic characteristics) about currently cultivated varieties. The Jatropha curcas L. is a shrub of the family Euphorbiaceae widely cultivated in tropical countries. Current study analyzes the effects of the manioc milky juice, known as manipueira in Brazil, and cow urine on the growth of jatropha. The experiment was conducted between January and December 2010 at CCAA, Campus II of UEPB, in Lagoa Seca PB Brazil. The assay had a 5 x 5 factorial design and randomized blocks with 25 treatments and 4 replications per treatment, divided into 4 blocks, with different volumes of cow urine and manipueira broth. The application of 1000 ml of the biofertilizer with cow urine increased the stem diameter by 4.75 %, number of leaves by 18.70 % and foliar area by 837.67 % when compared to control. Further, 1000 ml of manipueira broth increased the number of leaves and the foliar area of the jatropha plant by 53.48 % and 414.02 %, respectively when compared to the lowest rate. The interaction of cow urine and 1000 ml of manipueira broth increased the stem diameter by 23.53% when compared to the lowest rate and by 543.01 % of the foliar area. Results show that different volumes of biofertilizers with cow urine and manipueira affected the growth of jatropha plants during 360 days, except for the variable plant height. Macassar bean (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) is no longer a culture only for family farmers and is now grown by medium and large producers in the North and Northeast regions, and also in countries of Africa and Asia, especially for its nutritional characteristics. The objective was to make a productive diagnosis of bean Macassar culture and meet some techniques used by bean producers in the municipality of Parari, Paraíba State, Brazil. The survey was conducted in 2011 with questionnaires to the 50 producers. It was found that most farmers, 45% has an area of 2 hectares for common bean cultivation, as follows: 55% of farmers get their seeds with property of neighbors, while 45% of them cultivate this legume in clay soils. Almost 85% use the bean as intercropping, always with the corn. According to the data 90% of producers do crop rotation, and producing 90% of its grains stored in metal bins. It is concluded that the bean is a culture of extreme importance to the economy and agriculture of survival in this region, requiring therefore new technologies to increase production and sustainability of the producer. The diversity of soil fauna has been considered a key aspect for maintaining the structure and fertility of soils. The crops of Cocos nucifera L., Vigna unguiculata L. and Opuntia ficus indica Mill. are major crops for income generation in the semiarid. This study aimed to identify the population of macrofauna present in these crops. The study was conducted in the municipality of Parari, Paraíba State, Brazil, in February 2012 (rainy season). For soil macrofauna determination, the samples were collected in seven points, using Provid traps at the level of the soil surface. From the data obtained were quantified and calculated the number of groups, and the diversity and the uniformity by sthe Shannon (H) and Pielou (e) indexes. The data were submitted to analysis of variance (F test) and the means were compared by Tukey test at 5% and 1% probability. The most abundant taxa and that showed less Shannon and Pielou indexes were Hymenoptera, Coleoptera and Araneae respectively. Diplodia, Diptera and Thysanura had higher number of individuals in the cultivated area with C. nucifera, while the order Lepidoptera was higher in the culture O. ficus indica. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
