Abstract: International audience, The diversity of requirements elicited from different customers leads to the development of many variants. Furthermore, compliance with safety standards as mandated for safety-critical systems requires high test efforts for each variant. Model-based testing aims to reduce test efforts by automatically generating test cases from test models. In this paper, we introduce variability management to usage models, a widely used model-based testing formalism. We present an approach that allows to derive usage model variants from a desired set of features and thus generate test cases for each variant. The approach is integrated in the industrial model-based testing tool chain MaTeLo and exemplified using an industrial case study from the aerospace domain.

Abstract: International audience, Testing techniques in industry are not yet adapted for product line engineering (PLE). In particular, Model-based Testing (MBT), a technique that allows to automatically generate test cases from requirements, lacks support for managing variability (differences) among a set of related product. In this paper, we present an approach to equip usage models, a widely used formalism in MBT, with variability capabilities. Formal correspondences are established between a variability model, a set of functional requirements, and a usage model. An algorithm then exploits the traceability links to automatically derive a usage model variant from a desired set of selected features. The approach is integrated into the professional MBT tool MaTeLo and is currently used in industry.

Abstract: International audience; Autonomous flight for large aircraft appears to be within our reach. However, launching autonomous systems for everyday missions still requires an immense interdisciplinary research effort supported by pointed policies and funding. We believe that concerted endeavors in the fields of neuroscience, mathematics, sensor physics, robotics, and computer science are needed to address remaining crucial scientific challenges. In this paper, we argue for a bio-inspired approach to solve autonomous flying challenges, outline the frontier of sensing, data processing, and flight control within a neuromorphic paradigm, and chart directions of research needed to achieve operational capabilities comparable to those we observe in nature. One central problem of neuromorphic computing is learning. In biological systems, learning is achieved by adaptive and relativistic information acquisition characterized by near-continuous information retrieval with variable rates and sparsity. This results in both energy and computational resource savings being an inspiration for autonomous systems. We consider pertinent features of insect, bat and bird flight behavior as examples to address various vital aspects of autonomous flight. Insects exhibit sophisticated flight dynamics with comparatively reduced complexity of the brain. They represent excellent objects for the study of navigation and flight control. Bats and birds enable more complex models of attention and point to the importance of active sensing for conducting more complex missions. The implementation of neuromorphic paradigms for autonomous flight will require fundamental changes in both traditional hardware and software. We provide recommendations for sensor hardware and processing algorithm development to enable energy efficient and computationally effective flight control.

Abstract: This is the second of two companion papers that describe the development of the RemoveDEBRIS space mission. This second article describes the in-orbit operations that were performed to demonstrate technologies to be used for the active removal of space debris, whereas the first paper described the development of the satellite's hardware. The RemoveDebris mission has been the world's first Active Debris Removal (ADR) mission to successfully demonstrate, in orbit, some cost effective technologies, including net and harpoon capture; and elements of the whole sequence of operations, like the vision-based navigation. The satellite was launched the 2nd of April 2018, to the International Space Station (ISS) and from there, on the 20th of June 2018, was deployed via the NanoRacks Kaber system into an orbit of 405 km altitude. During the mission, two 2U CubeSats have been released by the mothercraft platform as artificial debris targets, to demonstrate net capture and cameras to be used for vision based navigation. Harpoon capture has been demonstrated by deploying a target and then firing at it a harpoon tethered to the platform. The various phases of the missions have been monitored using relevant telemetry and video cameras, and this paper reports the results of the various demonstrations.

7. Towards Embedded Packet Processing Devices for Rapid Prototyping of Avionic Applications

Abstract: International audience; Recent developments made in the area of network-specific reconfigurable hardware and associated description language – namely the P4 language and its back-ends – promise interesting features for rapid prototyping of packet processing devices. Due to the need for high flexibility and increasing trend towards softwarization, such solution is of interest for the aeronautical industry where custom network protocols are generally used. Our contributions in this paper are two fold. First, an analysis of the functionalities of P4 with respect to requirements usually necessary for applications and network protocols in the aeronautic industry is performed. In a second step, a performance evaluation of three different platforms was done. Those platforms represent three use-cases: an existing software-based back-end using Intel DPDK, a hardware network accelerator based on a network processor unit, and an FPGA-based platform. Performance of those platforms are compared to existing state-of-the-art hardware solutions used in by the aeronautical industry.

Abstract: This paper presents a comparative study of two algorithms for detecting and analyzing 29 the characteristic shapes of reflection obtained as a result of Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) 30 scanning technology. The first algorithm is a sub-array processing method that uses direction-of31 arrival algorithms and the matched filter technique; this approach is implemented in SPOT-GPR 32 (release 1.0), a new freeware tool for the detection and localization of targets in radargrams. The 33 second algorithm, APEX, is based on machine learning and pattern recognition techniques and it 34 allows finding the coordinates of apexes and further characteristic points of hyperbolas in 35 radargrams. Both software solutions are implemented in MATLAB environment. As a first step, 36 we compare the accuracy of our algorithms when applied to synthetic data, calculated by using 37 the open-source finite-difference time-domain simulator gprMax; the considered scenarios are 38 two concrete cells hosting different metallic and dielectric targets. Then, we compare the 39 accuracy of our algorithms when applied to experimental data, recorded over district heating 40 pipes in a trench, with known geometry and depth of the pipes. For the latter scenario, we have 41 also generated a gprMax radargram, matching the geometry and scanning settings of the real one: 42 both algorithms are tested on this synthetic radargram, as well. Overall, both algorithms perform 43 well and rather uniformly in localizing the targets; the accuracy of the algorithms is at centimeter 44 level, which is sufficient in most applications.

Abstract: This paper presents the first extensive study of the performances of solid polymers used as confinement materials for laser shock applications such as laser shock peening (LSP) as opposed to the exclusively used water-confined regime up to now. The use of this new confinement approach allows the treatment of metal pieces needing fatigue behavior enhancement but located in areas which are sensitive to water. Accurate pressure determination in the polymer confinement regime was performed by coupling finite element simulation and experimental measurements of rear free-surface velocity using the velocity interferometer system for any reflector (VISAR). Pressure could reach 7.6 and 4.6 GPa for acrylate-based polymer and cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), respectively. At 7 and 4.7 GW/cm 2 , respectively, detrimental laser breakdown limited pressure for acrylate and PDMS. These results show that the pressures produced were also as high as in water confinement, attaining values allowing the treatment of all types of metals with LSP and laying the groundwork for future determination of the fatigue behavior exhibited by this type of treated materials.

Abstract: In recent years, European manufacturing companies are gradually applying innovative PSS (Product Service Systems), as strategic opportunity for differentiating from competitors, offering an integrated bundle of products and services, targeted on specific needs of different customers. At the same time, frugal innovation has also surged as a new business concept based upon an intelligent use of resources to fulfill region-dependent customers’ needs. Both approaches bring forth rethinking of established business models, which in turn asks for an in-depth analysis of the implications on the company organization and infrastructure, at supply chain and plant levels, urging towards manufacturing networks and reconfigurable assembly lines. This paper presents a formalized framework to support product-service design and the related business model characterization, in the context of frugal innovation. The methodology is applied to three real industrial scenarios respectively in the aeronautics, the domestic appliances and the machinery industry, which are analyzed within the framework of the H2020 European funded project ‘ProRegio’.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, the cure kinetics, rheological and electrical behaviors of the MWCNTs/epoxy nanocomposites produced using a three-roll mill are studied. After defining the domain of linear response, the influence of temperature and MWCNTs on the shear viscosity has been investigated. The shear-thinning effect caused by adding CNTs to the epoxy matrix is more pronounced at increased temperature and MWCNT weight content. Furthermore, a mechanical manifestation of the percolation phenomenon may have been observed. At last the electrical conductivity was investigated to characterize the percolation behavior and determine the best CNT content/electrical properties ratio.

Abstract: International audience; This paper discusses design and integration associated with distributed propulsion as a means of providing motive power for future aircraft concepts. The technical work reflects activities performed within a European Commission funded Framework 7 project entitled Distributed Propulsion and Ultra-high By-Pass Rotor Study at Aircraft Level, or, DisPURSAL. In this instance, the approach of distributed propulsion includes one unique solution that integrates the fuselage with a single propulsor (dubbed Propulsive-Fuselage Concept, PFC) as well as a Distributed Multiple-Fans Concept (DMFC) driven by a limited number of engine cores – both targeting entry-in-service year 2035+. The strong coupling between airframe aerodynamics and motive power performance is analysed using high-end, low-fidelity and interlaced-fidelity methods. Although this paper reflects work-in-progress results, initial indications show for a PFC undertaking medium-to-long-range operations around 9% reduction in CO 2 -emissions compared to an evolutionary, year 2035, conventional morphology gas-turbine aircraft appears to be a worthwhile target.

Abstract: International audience; The strong cost pressure of the market and safety issues faced by aerospace industry affect the development. Suppliers are forced to continuously optimize their life-cycle processes to facilitate the development of variants for different customers and shorten time to market. Additionally, industrial safety standards like RTCA/DO-178C require high efforts for testing single products. A suitably organized test process for Product Lines (PL) can meet standards. In this paper, we propose an approach that adopts Model-based Testing (MBT) for PL. Usage models, a widely used MBT formalism that provides automatic test case generation capabilities, are equipped with variability information such that usage model variants can be derived for a given set of features. The approach is integrated in the professional MBT tool MaTeLo. We report on our experience gained from an industrial case study in the aerospace domain.

Abstract: Hypersonic airliner would be exposed to temperatures that are beyond the limits of classical aircraft materials. In order to handle this problem the latest developments of new materials and composite structures suitable for high temperature application need to be taken into account. The focus of the European Research program ATLLAS is on advanced light-weight, high-temperature material development strongly linked to a high-speed passenger aircraft design. ATLLAS stands for Aerodynamic and Thermal Load Interactions with Lightweight Advanced Materials for High Speed Flight. The 4 years program ATLLAS-II is a logical continuation project built upon the experience and technology development gained within ATLLAS-I. The corresponding work related to combustor structures and material integration deals with the opportunity to investigate at academic level, both in basic and relevant environment, different solutions possibly usable to ensure the long range cruise of a high speed airliner. Different materials (UTHC, CMC, metallic) and different cooling techniques (radiation, convective, transpiration) are studied. Available numerical or semi-empirical tools are used to prepare the test, to design the different architectures. A pin fin experiment allows to better know the pressure drop and the heat transfer for different channel patterns with thermal cristal techniques. The ERBURIG-K long duration test facility allow to characterize different ceramic matrix composite uncooled samples and will allow to realize, at small scale, a long duration (several hours) investigation of cooled ceramic structure in PTAH-SOCAR technology. A multifonctionnal metallic transpiration cooled HSS panel using Hollow Spheres Stacking as core material was designed and preliminary tested in cold conditions with GN2 and in hot conditions with infra lamps under 1 MW/m² heat flux. CMC and UHTC materials are used to design, manufacture and test generic fin injectors usable in high speed combustors. Industrial hypersonic METHYLE test facility is used to test in relevant Mach 6 combustor environment HSS panel as well as advanced fin injectors. Hot and cold permeability of composites is documented with GN2 and GH2. Numerical models are used in accordance with the experiments, some examples are given in the present paper.

Abstract: International audience; The EC FP7 RemoveDebris mission aims to be one of the world’s first Active Debris Removal (ADR) missions to demonstrate key technologies in-orbit in a cost effective ambitious manner, including: net capture, harpoon capture, vision-based navigation, dragsail de-orbitation. RemoveDebris is a low-cost mission funded jointly by the European Commission (EU) and 10 partners: the University of Surrey (UK), Airbus (France, Germany, UK); Ariane Group (France); Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, (UK); Innovative Solutions In Space (Netherlands); CSEM (Switzerland); Inria (France); Stellenbosch University (South Africa). The mission will utilise two CubeSats as artificial debris targets to demonstrate the technologies. In early 2018, the main 100-kg satellite was launched to the International Space Station (ISS) and deployed via the NanoRacks Kaber system into an orbit of around 400 km. The mission comes to an end in early 2019 with all space entities having been de-orbited.This paper reports on the LEOP and commissioning phase of the mission in preparation for experimental tests due to begin end of 2018.

Abstract: International Altimetry Team., In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and provides guidance for future mission design, research activities, and sustainable operational radar altimetry data exploitation. Recommendations provided are fundamental for optimizing further scientific and operational advances of oceanographic observations by altimetry, including requirements for spatial and temporal resolution of altimetric measurements, their accuracy and continuity. There are also new challenges and new openings mentioned in the paper that are particularly crucial for observations at higher latitudes, for coastal oceanography, for cryospheric studies and for hydrology. The paper starts with a general introduction followed by a section on Earth System Science including Ocean Dynamics, Sea Level, the Coastal Ocean, Hydrology, the Cryosphere and Polar Oceans and the “Green” Ocean, extending the frontier from biogeochemistry to marine ecology. Applications are described in a subsequent section, which covers Operational Oceanography, Weather, Hurricane Wave and Wind Forecasting, Climate projection. Instruments’ development and satellite missions’ evolutions are described in a fourth section. A fifth section covers the key observations that altimeters provide and their potential complements, from other Earth observation measurements to in situ data. Section 6 identifies the data and methods and provides some accuracy and resolution requirements for the wet tropospheric correction, the orbit and other geodetic requirements, the Mean Sea Surface, Geoid and Mean Dynamic Topography, Calibration and Validation, data accuracy, data access and handling (including the DUACS system). Section 7 brings a transversal view on scales, integration, artificial intelligence, and capacity building (education and training). Section 8 reviews the programmatic issues followed by a conclusion., At the forefront of this support, we must obviously mention the space agencies CNES, ESA and NASA which have played and still play a decisive role in the development and launch of several prominent altimetry missions from the outset. Other agencies such as DLR, EUMETSAT, ISRO, NOAA, NSOAS and organizations such as CMEMS, also contribute significantly to developments in all forms of altimetry.
