Weather forecast using GNSS-R relies, to a large extent, on data acquired by airborne and spaceborne platforms due to the extended coverage that can be achieved. GEO satellites can retrieve measurements over large areas but with spatial resolutions on the order of thousands of meters per pixel. LEO satellites with polar orbits can provide measurements over the entire world, but they cannot provide good spatial or high temporal resolutions by themselves. LEO constellations of small satellites have the same coverage with improved spatial resolution and revisit times by using data fusion techniques. High-altitude pseudo-satellites offer an excellent temporal and spatial resolution but only over limited areas. In this article, the potential of using hosted GNSS-R payloads on commercial aircraft is explored as an alternative and cost-effective means to achieve a very high resolution and a very low revisit time for regional environmental applications. Finally, a case study of soil moisture monitoring over Europe is presented, including an analysis of the expected performance.

Remote sensing of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is a rapidly advancing front in terrestrial vegetation science, with emerging capability in space-based methodologies and diverse application prospects. Although remote sensing of SIF – especially from space – is seen as a contemporary new specialty for terrestrial plants, it is founded upon a multi-decadal history of research, applications, and sensor developments in active and passive sensing of chlorophyll fluorescence. Current technical capabilities allow SIF to be measured across a range of biological, spatial, and temporal scales. As an optical signal, SIF may be assessed remotely using high-resolution spectral sensors in tandem with state-of-the-art algorithms to distinguish the emission from reflected and/or scattered ambient light. Because the red to far-red SIF emission is detectable non-invasively, it may be sampled repeatedly to acquire spatio-temporally explicit information about photosynthetic light responses and steady-state behaviour in vegetation. Progress in this field is accelerating with innovative sensor developments, retrieval methods, and modelling advances. This review distills the historical and current developments spanning the last several decades. It highlights SIF heritage and complementarity within the broader field of fluorescence science, the maturation of physiological and radiative transfer modelling, SIF signal retrieval strategies, techniques for field and airborne sensing, advances in satellite-based systems, and applications of these capabilities in evaluation of photosynthesis and stress effects. Progress, challenges, and future directions are considered for this unique avenue of remote sensing. • Historical and current progress in remote sensing of SIF are reviewed. • Technical capabilities allow measurements over a range of spatial scales. • Sensor capabilities, retrieval methods, and modelling are now quite advanced. • Applications in vegetation include stress detection and photosynthesis. • Future directions include validation, optimized systems, and interpretation. We report on an airborne demonstration of atmospheric methane (CH 4 ) measurements with an Integrated Path Differential Absorption (IPDA) lidar using an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) and optical parametric oscillator (OPO) laser transmitter and sensitive avalanche photodiode detector. The lidar measures the atmospheric CH 4 absorption at multiple, discrete wavelengths near 1650.96 nm. The instrument was deployed in the fall of 2015, aboard NASA's DC-8 airborne laboratory along with an in-situ spectrometer and measured CH 4 over a wide range of surfaces and atmospheric conditions from altitudes of 2 km to 13 km. In this paper, we will show the results from our flights, compare the performance of the two laser transmitters, and identify areas of improvement for the lidar.
