In this work, the airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) infrastructure developed at the Institute for Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment (IREA) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) is described. This infrastructure allows IREA-CNR to plan and execute airborne SAR campaigns and to process the acquired data with a twofold aim. On one hand, the aim is to develop research activities; on the other hand, the aim is to support the emergency prevention and management activities of the Department of Civil Protection of the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, for which IREA-CNR serves as National Centre of Competence. Such infrastructure consists of a flight segment and a ground segment that include a multi-frequency airborne SAR sensor based on the Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technology and operating in the X- and L-bands, an Information Technology (IT) platform for data storage and processing and an airborne SAR data processing chain. In this work, the technical aspects related to the flight and ground segments of the infrastructure are presented. Moreover, a discussion on the response times and characteristics of the final products that can be achieved with the infrastructure is provided with the aim of showing its capabilities to support the monitoring activities required in a possible emergency scenario. This paper investigates the airborne synthetic aperture radar via outfield experiments based on carrier-free ultra-wideband signals with fifth-order Gaussian pulses with imaging using the backward projection algorithm. Typical blanket jamming is selected in the study, and NAM, NFM, and SFM are used as jamming signals to investigate the backward projection BP imaging effect of airborne synthetic aperture radar when subjected to blanket jamming in a real-world environment. Subsequently, a variational modal decomposition algorithm is proposed, aiming at the anti-jamming processing of airborne synthetic aperture radar. Further, the variational modal decomposition algorithms are compared with the empirical modal decomposition for the anti-jamming effect, which verified the effectiveness and high efficiency of the method. This study provides a new solution for the imaging problem of airborne synthetic aperture radar when subjected to blanket jamming, and a helpful reference is provided for the selection of anti-jamming processing methods. When Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observes complex structural targets such as oil tanks, it is easily interfered with by multipath signals, resulting in a large number of multipath ghost images in the SAR image, which seriously affect the image clarity. To address this problem, this paper proposes a multi-aspect multipath suppression method. This method observes complex structural targets from different azimuth angles to obtain a multi-aspect image sequence and then uses the difference in sequence features between the target image and the multipath ghost image with respect to aspect angle to separate them. This paper takes a floating-roof oil tank as an example to analyze the propagation path and the ghost image characteristics of multipath signals under different observation aspects. We conclude that the scattering center of the multipath ghost image changes with the radar observation aspect, whereas the scattering center of the target image does not. This paper uses the Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) method to decompose the image sequence matrix into two parts: a sparse matrix and a low-rank matrix. The low-rank matrix represents the aspect-stable principal component in the image sequence; that is, the real scattering center. The sparse matrix represents the part of the image sequence that deviates from the principal component; that is, the signal that varies with aspect, mainly including multipath signals, sidelobes, anisotropic signals, etc. By reconstructing the low-rank matrix and the sparse matrix, respectively, we can obtain the image after multipath signal suppression and also the multipath ghost image. Both the target and the multipath signal provide useful information. The image after multipath signal suppression is useful for obtaining the structural information of the target, and the multipath ghost image is useful for analyzing the multipath phenomenon of the complex structure target. This paper conducts experimental verification using real airborne SAR data of an external floating roof oil tank and compares three methods: RPCA, PCA, and sub-aperture fusion method. Effective utilization of airborne synthetic-aperture (Airborne SAR) imagery often requires precise location of each image pixel. Historically, the positioning of airborne SAR imagery either relies on the use of reliable reference points to determine the relative position of the image, or requires the precise motion information of the aircraft and the characteristics of the SAR data collection system as input to determine the absolute position of the image. However, for many applications, the accuracy of traditional positioning methods is not high due to the challenge in obtaining the accurate geographic positions of reliable reference points and the inaccuracy of the recorded aircraft motion information. This study introduces an airborne SAR image planar positioning approach based on the premise that the systematic positioning error of the dual-view airborne SAR images are relatively consistent. The suggested planar positioning method applies the positioning auxiliary parameters of the initial ground-range airborne SAR image to ascertain the transformation relationship between the target's initial geographic position and pixel position, and it then uses the equivalent equation for the position of the homologue point to assess the systematic positioning error of the SAR image and determine the geographic position of a pixel in a digital SAR image. This approach has advantages over previous techniques in that it requires no precise geographic position information of the ground reference points, and on the basis of using the RD model to accomplish coarse positioning of four corners of SAR image, it no longer needs aircraft trajectory data. Tests were conducted using two airborne SAR images actually captured, and the experimental results indicate that the proposed method can achieve high precision planar positioning of dual-view airborne SAR images. • We analyzed the factors affecting the positioning errors of airborne SAR. • We constructed a geometric calibration model by considering the platform motion constraints. • We designed a joint geometric calibration strategy using multiple SAR images. • The calibrated positioning accuracy of SAR images improved from 336 m to 1.42 m in Hainan city. • The multiple image combination strategy improved the initial positioning accuracy of 930 m from 14.50 m using single image to 12.47 m using 5 images in Rizhao city. Airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has the advantages of flexible scanning geometry and high spatial resolution compared with spaceborne SAR. However, the quality and positioning accuracy are affected by platform instability caused by air turbulence and other factors. In this paper, the sources of geometric positioning error in airborne SAR were analyzed, including platform position error, time delay error and tropospheric delay error. To improve the positioning quality of airborne SAR, an imaging parameters calibration model considering velocity constraints (IFP-VC) was proposed to rectify the orbit parameters and enable geometric calibration to improve the positioning accuracy. The proposed IFP-VC model was applied to improve the positioning accuracy of airborne SAR images acquired in Hainan and Rizhao, China. The IFP-VC model demonstrated good positioning performance when using measured ground control points (GCPs) in Hainan, achieving a positioning accuracy of 1.42 m. In Rizhao, the proposed IFP-VC model yielded a positioning accuracy of 7.16–12.71 m and 2.05–6 m higher than the slant range and time calibration model and the unconstrained model when using manually selected GCPs, respectively. The multiple images combination strategy was superior to the single image strategy, and the initial positioning accuracy of 930 m was improved from 14.50 m using a single image to 12.47 m using 5 images. When applying the imaging parameters calibration results to the images in different tracks, the positioning accuracy can be improved to 31 m compared with the initial positioning accuracy. The geometric calibration of airborne SAR images has the potential to enhance its applications in remote sensing mapping, land-use change monitoring and ground target detection. Airborne synthetic aperture radar (Airborne SAR) can accurately locate key targets and regions by using the flight parameters of the aircraft and the relative position information between the aircraft and the target which can be obtained from the airborne positioning and orientation system (POS). In the course of flight, the aircraft will deviate from the ideal flight path due to atmospheric turbulence, which results in the calculation deviating from the actual target position. In order to improve the target positioning accuracy, it is necessary to study the influence of aircraft motion error on the target positioning error. This study discusses the positioning accuracy of single-view airborne SAR from the perspective of linear Range-Doppler algorithm (RDA), and deduces the multi-view airborne SAR positioning error transfer model based on the multi-view airborne SAR positioning model. Based on these, we analyze the main factors that affect the positioning accuracy of the two positioning methods in detail and quantitatively reveal the mechanism by which the multi-view airborne SAR positioning method can improve the target positioning accuracy compared with the single-view airborne SAR positioning method; we also solve the problem of course planning for multi-view airborne SAR optimal positioning. Aircraft inevitably experience motion caused by the flight environment in airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems. Therefore, motion compensation is essential. The real-time motion method is vital for high-resolution SAR image formation and onboard SAR signal processing. In this paper, an effective implementation scheme for a radar-timing signal generator is presented. This paper also describes a motion prediction method suitable for airborne SAR systems. Abstract We present detailed maps of local-scale 3D deformation preceding the 2018 phreatic eruption at Iwo-yama volcano (south of Kyushu Island, Japan), using a combination of airborne and spaceborne Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data. The 3D and 2.5D deformation maps obtained at different periods allow us to successfully track their spatiotemporal evolution and to infer the transition of subsurface conditions responsible for the precursory deformation observed from 2014 to 2018. From 2014 to 2016, ground inflation depicted an axisymmetric pattern with the maximum displacement at the center of the deformed area. However, from 2016 to 2018, an inflation peak moved to the southern edge of the area deformed during 2014–2016 and became more localized, which was close to the newly generated vents in the 2018 eruption. Modeling of the inflations suggests that pressurization within a crack at a depth of 150 m beneath the Iwo-yama geothermal area caused the 2014–2016 deformation and had continued until the 2018 eruption. Modeling results highlight the persistence of the local ground inflation pattern just above the southern edge of the crack, which suggests the presence of a shallower inflation source contributing to the local inflation. Consequently, we interpret the sequence of these deformations as follows: from 2014, deeper-rooted fluid started to inject into a fluid-saturated crack at 150-m depth, which caused the 2014–2016 deformation. Then, after 2016, the crack inflation continued because of the continuous fluid injection and formed another pressurized part directly above the southern tip of the crack. Additionally, the results of the time-series analysis of the satellite InSAR data revealed that the local inflation started around April 2017 for which thermal activity including a mud emission became pronounced around the location of the local inflation. As a result of an episodic increase in supply rate of magmatic fluids from a deep magma reservoir from early 2018, a phreatic eruption finally occurred in the vicinity of the most deformed point, providing a clue for predicting future eruption sites, as was also observed in the Hakone 2015 eruption.

In this paper, we consider the problem of fusion of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from spaceborne and airborne sensors and investigate its applications to inshore ship target detection. Existing SAR image fusion methods mainly focus on image denoising or texture enhancement, but show limited improvement of target-to-clutter ratios (TCRs) in composite images and lead to deteriorated target detection performance. To address this issue, we propose a new method for the fusion of spaceborne and airborne SAR images based on the target proposal and the copula theory (TPCT). In TPCT, target and clutter correspondence between different images are exploited to improve the TCRs of composite images. TPCT consists of three steps. First, target proposals are extracted from spaceborne and airborne SAR images and then fused to enhance the common ship target areas therein. Second, a new method to construct the joint probability density function (PDF) of clutter in spaceborne and airborne SAR images is presented to model the statistical dependence of clutter therein based on the copula theory. This copula-based joint PDF is used to suppress the clutter areas remained in the intersection of target proposals. Third, clues from the intersection of target proposals and the copula-based joint PDF of clutter are fused by the Hadamard product to generate the composite image with enhanced ship targets and the suppressed clutter. This paper describes the L-band airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system and an experimental study of repeat-pass SAR interferometry. The discussions mainly focus on the internal calibration method, the imaging method based on Differential Global Positioning System/Inertial Measurement Unit (DGPS/IMU) data, Residual Motion Error (RME) estimation and compensation, and the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) inversion method with Interferometric SAR (InSAR). Two typical test areas were chosen from the acquired SAR data for detailed analyses. The DEMs in these two areas were inversed with repeat-pass InSAR, and comparisons with the measured ground points show errors in these two areas with a standard deviation 3.40 m and 2.85 m, respectively. This demonstrates the good performance of this L-band repeat-pass interferometric SAR system. These results have important significance for the design of airborne repeat-pass InSAR systems and typical terrain mapping. When the flight tracks are under good control, this L-band SAR system is applicable in the fields of differential InSAR, polarimetric InSAR, and tomographic SAR.

The evaluation of buildings damage following disasters from natural hazards is a crucial step in determining the extent of the damage and measuring renovation needs. In this study, a combination of the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data before and after the earthquake were used to assess the damage to buildings caused by the Kumamoto earthquake. For damage assessment, three variables including elevation difference (ELD) and texture difference (TD) in pre- and post-event LIDAR images and coherence difference (CD) in SAR images before and after the event were considered and their results were extracted. Machine learning algorithms including random forest (RDF) and the support vector machine (SVM) were used to classify and predict the rate of damage. The results showed that ELD parameter played a key role in identifying the damaged buildings. The SVM algorithm using the ELD parameter and considering three damage rates, including D0 and D1 (Negligible to slight damages), D2, D3 and D4 (Moderate to Heavy damages) and D5 and D6 (Collapsed buildings) provided an overall accuracy of about 87.1%. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) which acquires planar images at any time of the day and under any weather conditions is an important surveillance sensor in modern hi-tech war. For airborne SAR the image formation algorithms are ideally analyzed with the presumption that the aircraft moves in a straight line and at constant speed. However, the aircraft is affected by kinds of factors such as airstreams and its own instability, so the motion error between real aviation and ideal aviation exists, which can seriously blur the SAR image. So the motion compensation must be executed. In this paper a novel method for resolving turbulent aircraft motion is proposed based on SAR raw data. This method is very valid to conquer the turbulent aircraft motion, also the SAR image can be focused. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by measured data imaging experiment. The traditional range Doppler (RD) imaging algorithm has become the most intuitive and classical method in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging processing because of its easy implementation and high processing efficiency. However, owing to the poor quality of the image produced by RD algorithm, this traditional imaging method is growing increasingly unable to meet practical needs. In an effort to solve the problem of poor azimuth imaging quality, this study proposes a high‐resolution RD azimuth imaging algorithm. The expression of the optimal order of the SAR azimuth signals using fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) is derived in detail herein. A theoretical analysis shows that this optimal order is unique and depends on the azimuth imaging parameters. The experimental results based on airborne SAR simulation data and spaceborne SAR measurement data indicate that the azimuth resolution of the proposed algorithm is improved by 31.6 or 46.8% as against that of the traditional RD algorithm, whereas the peak side lobe ratio (PSLR) and integrated side lobe ratio (ISLR) values obtained via the proposed algorithm are approximately equivalent to those obtained via the traditional RD algorithm. In this paper, the problems of mariculture area segmentation and corresponding area value estimations are investigated on the basis of airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. In order to deal with a limited amount of noisy airborne SAR image data in an efficient way, an effective coarse-to-fine approach is proposed, consisting of three major components, including (1) an adaptive segmentation method for each local patch to remove noise from the ocean background, (2) a dynamic coarse-to-fine clustering method for grouping pixels to achieve image segments, and (3) a polygon-fitting-based algorithm to obtain regular borders for each region and corresponding area value. Some feasible experiments are operated based on the restricted airborne SAR images, and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated in terms of the provided pixel level evaluation annotations. Use of Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems requires to accurately know the electronic parameters of the system. In particular, the use of an incorrect value of the Frequency Sweep Rate (FSR) introduces geometric distortions in the focused images. Recently, a method, that we name FSR Estimate Through Corner reflectors (FSRETC), has been proposed to estimate the FSR value actually employed by the radar. The method is based on the use of the SAR image focused with the available erroneous FSR. Moreover, it exploits a number of Corner Reflectors (CRs) deployed over the illuminated area. In this work, we provide an assessment of the capabilities of the FSRETC algorithm. The overall analysis is performed through the use of a real dataset consisting of 10 acquisitions carried out in 2018 (5 acquisitions) and 2019 (5 acquisitions) with an airborne FMCW SAR system. The presented experimental analysis shows that even with a single acquisition, use of two CRs sufficiently far from each other in the range direction, allows achieving an accurate estimate of the searched FSR. Moreover, it is shown that the obtained estimate is very stable over the time. Therefore, the overall procedure can be applied only once, since the estimated values can be safely used for the subsequent missions, at least for the time interval considered in the work, that is, 14 months. In addition, the presented results pose the basis for an enhanced measurement strategy that allows effective application of the FSRETC algorithm through the use of only one CR.

Airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems are gaining increasing interest within the remote sensing community due to their operational flexibility and observation capabilities. Among these systems, those exploiting the Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) technology are compact, lightweight, and comparatively low cost. For these reasons, they are becoming very attractive, since they can be easily mounted onboard ever-smaller and highly flexible aerial platforms, like helicopters or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In this work, we present the imaging and topographic capabilities of a novel Italian airborne SAR system developed in the frame of cooperation between a public research institute (IREA-CNR) and a private company (Elettra Microwave S.r.l.). The system, which is named AXIS (standing for Airborne X-band Interferometric SAR), is based on FMCW technology and is equipped with a single-pass interferometric layout. In the work we first provide a description of the AXIS system. Then, we describe the acquisition campaign carried out in April 2018, just after the system completion. Finally, we perform an analysis of the radar data acquired during the campaign, by presenting a quantitative assessment of the quality of the SLC (Single Look Complex) SAR images and the interferometric products achievable through the system. The overall analysis aims at providing first reference values for future research and operational activities that will be conducted with this sensor.

Recent years have seen a surging interest in several novel tools pertaining to SAR, such as multichannel high-resolution and wide-swath (HRWS) SAR, multibaseline interferometric SAR (InSAR), multisubband SAR, polarimetric SAR (PolSAR), and polarimetric SAR interferometry (PolInSAR). We believe that these new approaches to SAR have valuable scientific applications. Here, we present a new experimental airborne SAR system named “N-SAR” (SAR of the Nanjing Research Institute of Electronic Technology) that can fulfill new requirements and is scalable to allow rapid development of modern SARs. As a dual-antenna airborne SAR system, the N-SAR system will be used to test new technologies and signal processing algorithms such as PolSAR and PolInSAR, multibaseline SAR interferometry, multichannel multichannel HRWS SAR/InSAR, and SAR ground moving target indicator. It will play a key role in evaluating the performance of current engineering-oriented SAR systems by using several new operational modes for scientific purposes. In this paper, we provide a conceptual description of the general system design features, instrument design, and capabilities of the N-SAR system. To meet the requirements of different experiments, a novel operational mode, named the alternating bistatic multipolarized mode based on the N-SAR system, is presented. A series of flight tests that started in April 2017 and will be carried out over the next few years are shown. Several preliminary experimental results pertaining to the calibration of PolSAR, multichannel SAR imaging, and interferometry are presented in this paper as an early validation of the capabilities of the N-SAR system. Water flow patterns across coastal and deltaic wetlands affect biogeochemical cycling, denitrification, organic carbon burial, and coastal landscape evolution. Our understanding of such patterns across these important landscapes is incomplete, however, because of the inherent difficulty of conducting spatially and temporally dense ground- or boat-based surveys in shallow, vegetated terrain. We conducted an airborne L-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) acquisition campaign on Wax Lake Delta, Louisiana, USA, in May 2015, to investigate whether water velocities and flow patterns over kilometer scales can be determined from remote sensing. Thirteen SAR flight lines over the delta region were acquired in 3 h with six different flight directions, concurrently with a small boat campaign. We show that SAR azimuth displacement due to Doppler shift can be used to estimate the surface water flow relative to the static and submerged vegetation interspersed on delta islands, using a simple Bragg wave scattering model and accounting for the Bragg wave's free velocity and wind drift. At Wax Lake Delta, we find that ~0.40 m/s water velocities within the main deltaic channels slow to 0.1–0.2 m/s as flow spreads laterally across, and converges within, the vegetated islands, coinciding with shallow (<0.5 m) depths and heightened flow resistance. This work is aimed at showing the present capabilities and future potentialities of an imaging radar system that can be mounted onboard flexible aerial platforms, such as helicopters or small airplanes, and may operate in the UHF and VHF frequency bands as Sounder and as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). More specifically, the Sounder operates at 165 MHz, whereas the SAR may operate either at 450 MHz or at 860 MHz. In the work, we present the first results relevant to a set of Sounder and SAR data collected by the radar during a helicopter-borne campaign conducted in 2018 over a desert area in Erfoud, Morocco, just after the conclusion of a system upgrading procedure. In particular, a first analysis of the focusing capabilities of the Sounder mode and of the polarimetric and interferometric capabilities of the SAR mode is conducted. The overall system, originally developed by CO.RI.S.T.A. according to a ASI funding set up in 2010, has been upgraded in the frame of a contract signed in 2015 between ASI and different private and public Italian Research Institutes and Universities, namely CO.RI.S.T.A., IREA-CNR, Politecnico di Milano and University of Trento.

Ocean waves are the richest texture on the sea surface, from which valuable information can be inversed. In general, the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images of surface waves will inevitably be distorted due to the intricate motion of surface waves. However, commonly used imaging algorithms do not take the motion of surface waves into consideration. Therefore, surface waves on the obtained SAR images are rather blurred. To solve this problem, an airborne SAR imaging algorithm for ocean waves based on optimum focus setting is proposed in this paper. Firstly, in order to obtain the real azimuth phase speed of dominant wave, the geometric and scanning distortion in the blurred SAR image is calibrated. Subsequently, according to the SAR integration time and wavelength of the dominant wave, a proper focus setting variation section is selected. Afterwards, all the focus settings in this variation section are used to refocus the image, which are then compared to decide the optimum focus setting for dominant wave. Finally, by redesigning the azimuth matched filter using this optimum focus setting, a well-focused SAR image for the dominant wave can be obtained. The proposed algorithm is applied to both simulation and field data, and SAR images of surface waves are obtained. Furthermore, the obtained images are compared with those obtained with a zero-focus setting. The comparison shows that the focus of surface waves is significantly improved, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Finally, how to choose the appropriate focus setting variation section under different parameters and the applicability of the algorithm are analyzed.

In this work, we investigate the sea surface monitoring capabilities of a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system equipped with a three-antenna hybrid Across Track (XT)/Along Track (AT) inteferometric configuration. To do this, we focus on the X-Band airborne InSAeS4 SAR system. Moreover, we propose a simple but effective methodology that allows simultaneous retrieval of the sea surface height and velocity by means of a straightforward, easy-to-implement, linear inversion procedure, which is very general and can be implemented with any system equipped with a three-antenna hybrid XT/AT Interferometric SAR (InSAR) configuration. In our case, we present an experiment carried out in January 2013 in South Italy over the coastline stretch of the Campania region including the Volturno River outlet. In this regard, we highlight that in situ measurements of the retrieved sea surface height and velocity at the time of the airborne mission are unfortunately not available. Notwithstanding, the obtained results show some interesting evidence that the estimated quantities are physically sound. This, on the one side, provides a preliminary validation of the effectiveness of the overall presented methodology and, on the other side, highlights the potentialities of the three-antenna hybrid XT/AT InSAR configuration of the InSAeS4 system for sea state monitoring. To compensate the degraded SAR image due to the residual errors and the spatial variant errors remaining after the motion compensation in the airborne SAR, we have introduced the autofocus method based on the partition processing. Thus, after we perform the spatial partition for the spotlight SAR data and the time partition for the stripmap SAR data, we reconstruct the subpatch images for the partitioned data. Then, we perform the local autofocus with the suitability analysis process for the phase errors estimated by the autofocus. Moreover, if the estimated phase errors are not properly compensated for the subpatch images, we perform the phase compensation method with the weight to the estimated phase error close to the degraded subpatch image to increase the SAR image quality. motion errors, frequently occur in SAR images. For airborne SAR system with very high resolution and airborne repeat-pass SAR interferometry, the residual motion errors must be estimated and compensated. Multi-squint Technique with Point Targets (MTPT) is able to estimate the residual motion errors for an individual SAR image, but errors in the platform velocity and the slant range will deteriorate the accuracy of the method. Based on the detailed analysis of the velocity and slant range to residual motion error estimation, simulated and real SAR data are used to validate it in this paper. It is also pointed out that though MTPT is able to estimate the errors in the velocity and slant range, it is sensitive to the phase error. Therefore, it is advised that the errors in the velocity and slant range should be removed with other precise method before MTPT is utilized to estimate the residual motion errors.

Finite element modeling and structural dynamic characteristics of antenna pedestal in airborne SAR were studied in this paper. The Finite element model of antenna pedestal in airborne SAR was set up on the basis of structural dynamic theory, then, the key technologies of dynamic simulation were pointed out, and the modal analysis and transient analysis were carried out. Simulation results show that the dynamic characteristics of antenna pedestal in airborne SAR can meet the requirements of servo bandwidth and structural strength. The fast finite element modeling and simulation method proposed in this paper are of great significance to the weight reducing design of antenna pedestal in airborne SAR.

In recent years, various attempts have been undertaken to obtain information about the structure of forested areas from multi-baseline synthetic aperture radar data. Tomographic processing of such data has been demonstrated for airborne L-band data but the quality of the focused tomographic images is limited by several factors. In particular, the common Fourierbased focusing methods are susceptible to irregular and sparse sampling, two problems, that are unavoidable in case of multi-pass, multi-baseline SAR data acquired by an airborne system. In this paper, a tomographic focusing method based on the time-domain back-projection algorithm is proposed, which maintains the geometric relationship between the original sensor positions and the imaged target and is therefore able to cope with irregular sampling without introducing any approximations with respect to the geometry. The tomographic focusing quality is assessed by analysing the impulse response of simulated point targets and an in-scene corner reflector. And, in particular, several tomographic slices of a volume representing a forested area are given. The respective P-band tomographic data set consisting of eleven flight tracks has been acquired by the airborne E-SAR sensor of the German Aerospace Center (DLR).

We present in this work a first assessment of the imaging and topographic mapping capabilities of the InSAeS4 system, which is a single-pass interferometric airborne X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). In particular, we first provide a brief description of the InSAeS4 sensor. Then, we discuss the results of our analysis on the SAR and interferometric SAR products relevant to the first flight-test campaign. More specifically, we have exploited as reference the GPS measurements relevant to nine Corner Reflectors (CRs) deployed over the illuminated area during the campaign and a laser scanner Digital Elevation Model (DEM). From the analysis carried out on the CRs we achieved a mean geometric resolution, for the SAR products, of about 0.14 m in azimuth and 0.49 m in range, a positioning misalignment with standard deviation of 0.07 m in range and 0.08 m in azimuth, and a height error with standard deviation of 0.51 m. From the comparison with the laser scanner DEM we estimated a height error with standard deviation of 1.57 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the automation of SAR image Block Adjustment, this paper proposed a method of SAR image matching integrating multi-information. It takes full advantage of SAR image geometric information, feature information, gray-related information and external auxiliary terrain information for SAR image matching. And then Image Tie Points (ITPs) of Block Adjustment can be achieved automatically. The main parts of extracting ITPs automatically include: First, SAR images were rectified geometrically based on the geometric information and external auxiliary terrain information (existed DEM) before match. Second, ground grid points with a certain interval can be get in the block area and approximate ITPs were acquired based on external auxiliary terrain information. Then match reference point was extracted for homologous image blocks with Harris feature detection operator and ITPs were obtained with pyramid matching based on gray-related information. At last, ITPs were transferred from rectified images to original SAR images and used in block adjustment. In the experiment, X band airborne SAR images acquired by Chinese airborne SAR system--CASMSAR system were used to make up the block. Oil spill experiment results in the coastal waters of Diu, India, with an airborne DLR ESAR sensor are discussed with reference to the SAR frequency, polarization and viewing angle. The SAR data acquired in the quad polarization of the L band and dual polarization of the C band over two spills are studied. A higher oil and water contrast is observed in the L-VV polarization than in the C-HH mode. Oil spill discrimination is possible over a wider view angle of the airborne SAR sensor data in L band than in C band. This study has also analyzed the spread and drift of oil in coastal waters. Digital elevation model (DEM) generation through interferometric processing of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data requires the calculation of a constant phase offset present in the unwrapped interferograms. This operation is usually carried out by exploiting the external information provided by GPS measurements in correspondence of corner reflectors (CRs) properly deployed over the illuminated area. This is, however, expensive in terms of cost and time. Moreover, deployment of CRs along with the corresponding in situ GPS measurements can be difficult (if not impossible) in unfriendly areas or in natural disaster scenarios. To circumvent these limitations, we address in this work the estimation of the required phase offset by exploiting a low-accuracy external DEM, without using CRs. More specifically, a two-step approach is proposed. The first step exploits the synthetic phase computed by means of the external DEM and represents a straightforward extension of the procedure that is usually applied in the presence of CRs. Subsequently, in order to refine the achieved solution, a second step is introduced. It is based on a least squares approach that properly exploits the difference between the available low-accuracy DEM and the interferometric DEM generated by means of the phase offset value roughly estimated through the first step. The presented approach is very easy to implement and allows us to achieve an accurate and fast estimate of the needed phase offset, even in the presence of an externalDEM affected by a vertical bias and/or a planar shift. The algorithm performances improve in the presence of a large variation of the look angle, as it generally happens in airborne systems. On the other side, the effectiveness of the algorithm may be impaired by the possible presence of artifacts in the unwrapped interferograms, such as those due to the residual motion errors typical of repeat-pass airborne SAR scenarios. Accordingly, the proposed solution is particularly suitable for single-pass interferometric airborne SAR systems, as demonstrated through the presented experimental results achieved on real data. Airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) raw data are affected by motion errors. These are commonly accounted for via standard two-step motion compensation (MOCO) algorithm followed by the Precise Topography- and Aperture-dependent (PTA) procedure proposed some years ago. For the high-resolution airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) stereo geolocation application, the final geolocation accuracy is influenced by various error parameter sources. In this paper, an airborne SAR stereo geolocation parameter error model, involving the parameter errors derived from the navigation system on the flight platform, has been put forward. Moreover, a kind of near-direct method for modeling and sensitivity analysis of navigation parameter errors is also given. This method directly uses the ground reference to calculate the covariance matrix relationship between the parameter errors and the eventual geolocation errors for ground target points. In addition, utilizing true flight track parameters’ errors, this paper gave a verification of the method and a corresponding sensitivity analysis for airborne SAR stereo geolocation model and proved its efficiency. The influence derived from atmosphere transmitting of radar wave, in the application of high-resolution airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) stereo positioning, may produce some phase errors, and eventually be introduced into positioning model. This paper described the principle of airborne SAR stereo positioning and the error sources of stereo positioning accuracy that arose from atmosphere transmitting, established a corresponding assessment model of atmosphere transmitting influence, and testified the model and the assessment principle taking the 1-m resolution airborne SAR images of Zigong City, Sichuan Province in China, as the test dataset. The test result has proved that the assessment model is reliable and reasonable. And, it has shown that the phase error arisen from time delay is the main error source during the atmosphere transmitting, which has much more influences on cross-track direction and introduces a stereo positioning error of about eight meters, but less on the along-track direction.
