Abstract

This paper investigates how individual dimensions of airline service quality determine airline image and passengers' future behavioural intentions. To investigate the effects of individual dimensions of airline service quality, Structural Equation Modeling using a maximum likelihood estimator, was applied to data collected from Australian international air passengers. It was found that there were significant relationships between the variables except one path. The dimension of in-flight service and the dimension of convenience and accessibility were each found to have a positive effect on airline image, which was directly related to Australian international air passengers' future behavioural intentions.

Byline: Fredrik Carlsson (1), Olof Johansson-Stenman (1), Peter Martinsson (1) Keywords: contingent valuation; transport; value of a statistical life; willingness to pay; anchoring; bad deaths Abstract: Using a contingent valuation survey, people's willingness to pay for a given risk reduction is found to be much larger, consistently more than two times as large, when traveling by air compared to by taxi. Follow-up questions revealed that an important reason for this discrepancy is that many experience a higher mental suffering from flying, and that they are willing to pay to reduce this suffering. It was also consistently found that people are willing to pay more for a certain risk reduction if the original price was higher. Policy implications are discussed. The role of consumers' wealth in the demand for international air travel is rarely touched on by researchers. To redress this limitation, an aggregated time series model of medium-to-long-distance international air travel demand for Israel was developed. This formula incorporates variables that account for current income, financial assets and non-financial assets of travelers. Results show that wealth determines air travel. Demand elasticities in terms of financial and non-financial assets were found to be statistically similar and significantly less than a unit.

This article applies the method of intervention analysis to the study of flows of U.K. air passengers to a variety of destinations. The significance and form of interventions on U.K. air travel are examined for the U.S. bombing of Libya in 1986 for which implicit assistance was given by the United Kingdom, the Lockerbie air disaster (1988), and the Persian Gulf crisis (1990-1991). The effects of these interventions on U.K. air travel vary in onset, magnitude, and duration according to the destination involved and the state that a crisis has reached. This article addresses the issue of whether airline deregulation has changed patterns of interurban accessibility. Changes in air passenger travel times between 1978 and 1990 were analyzed for flights between seven Ohio cities and the 100 largest United States air passenger destinations. The results indicate that although regional patterns in travel time changes were evident, in general deregulation has not reduced interurban accessibility.

A behavioural choice model is used to predict the market share of Sheffield airport for a range of flight frequencies and fares. The model has been assessed on the actual choice of airport of travellers in 1983 who began their trips within an hour of Sheffield's airport location. Results indicate that comparable flight frequencies need to be offered to those at the competitive airports if the Sheffield airport hopes to recapture a sizable market share. Fare as well as aircraft size were found to have lesser bearing, at least for business traffic.

Nevertheless, the first direct encounter with air travel for most of us is via the commercial airlines.

This article explores alternative ways of collecting data on air travel. Comparisons are made between two different survey methods (general household surveys and intercept air travel surveys), and two alternative data collection procedures in intercept surveys (on-board and at gate). Results show that air travel estimates do not depend heavily on survey method. Intercept and household surveys produce a more or less comparable picture of the air travel market, although some differences are found with regard to trip purpose distributions. Regarding data collection procedure in intercept surveys, interviews conducted at gate are found to be more susceptible to nonresponse than are on-board interviews. However, no significant differences exist between the samples with regard to trip and respondent characteristics, suggesting that the increased nonresponse in gate surveys is not systematic and that an equally valid picture of airline passengers can be obtained through gate and on-board surveys.

The full cost of three modes of intercity transportation which are air, highway and high-speed rail for the California corridor was evaluated. Estimates of four types of external social costs were also presented, namely, accidents, congestion, noise and air pollution. Findings showed that air transportation is less costly than the other two modes. High-speed rail and highway transportation had more or less the same full costs. The modes had a different distribution of internal costs, with automobile having the highest external cost and high-speed rail having the highest internal costs.
