The study investigates the effect of different parameters for the removal of SO 2 and NO x through a wet process concurrently. Two separate processes have been compared for the removal of flue gases, that is, Ozone/UV and H 2 O 2 /UV. The research aims to develop a comparative study for the removal of SO 2 and NO x simultaneously using Ozone/H 2 O 2 and UV light and find the energy consumption (also known as E EO ) for each process. Combining UV with O 3 and H 2 O 2 play a crucial role in generating hydroxyl radicals. Different combinations of Ozone/H 2 O 2 , flue gas, and UV intensity were studied at different pH and temperatures of the solution to achieve maximum removal of the flue gases. For, the ozonation process it was observed that the removal% of flue gases increases with increasing UV intensity, and at higher UV intensity (250 W), the removal% for NO x is 92% and SO 2 is 95% simultaneously at optimum temperature 308 K. For H 2 O 2 /UV process (250 W UV intensity), removal% for NO x is 95% and SO 2 is 100% at 313 K, 0.3 LPM flow rate of flue gases. The E EO values obtained for both processes were less than 1 for 95% NO x /SO 2 removal efficiency.

The increasing use of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) has exposed large populations to this environmental and occupational carcinogenic agent. Therefore, researchers have been interested in removing this substance through adsorbents. This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of natural zeolite in the direct adsorption of Cr(VI) from airflow and its adsorption modeling. In this study, a nebulizer device produced the Cr(VI) mist. The efficiency of natural zeolite in Cr(VI) adsorption from airflow, modeling of fixed column adsorption, and the effective parameters on adsorption efficiency including the initial concentration of chromium, airflow rate, and adsorption bed depth were studied. To facilitate the prediction of the performance of natural zeolite's adsorption column, Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, BDST, and Buhart-Adams models were used. The results showed that the adsorption capacity diminished with increased airflow rate and initial concentration, while it increased with elevated height of the adsorption bed. Yoon-Nelson, Thomas, and BDST models corresponded to experimental data with a correlation coefficient of 0.9933, but the information of the Buhart-Adams model had a lower correlation coefficient (around 0.6677). The ability of indoor plants to purify benzene pollution is the basic basis for the selection of plants for ecological remediation of indoor benzene pollution. In this study, the purification rate and the purification amount per unit leaf area of 13 test plants at three benzene concentrations were determined by indoor fumigation experiments, and the benzene absorption and purification abilityability of indoor plants were comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that (1) there was a significant correlation between benzene concentration and purification rate and purification amount per unit leaf area. (2) At the three concentrations, Spathiphyllum floribundum showed the highest purification rate and Sansevieria trifasciata var. laurentii showed the highest purification per unit leaf area. (3) The combined results showed that Sansevieria trifasciata var. laurentii, Spathiphyllum floribundum and Aloe arborescens were the strongest absorbers and purifiers, while Podocarpus nagi and Anthurium andraeanum 'Pink champin' had the weakest absorption and purification capacity. The adverse impact of particulate air pollution on human health 1,2 has prompted the development of purification systems that filter particulates out of air 3-5 . To maintain performance, the filter units must inevitably be replaced at some point, which requires maintenance, involves costs and generates solid waste 6,7 . Here we show that an ion-doped conjugated polymer-coated matrix infiltrated with a selected functional liquid enables efficient, continuous and maintenance-free air purification. As the air to be purified moves through the system in the form of bubbles, the functional fluid provides interfaces for filtration and for removal of particulate matter and pollutant molecules from air. Theoretical modelling and experimental results demonstrate that the system exhibits high efficiency and robustness: its one-time air purification efficiency can reach 99.6%, and its dust-holding capacity can reach 950 g m -2 . The system is durable and resistant to fouling and corrosion, and the liquid acting as filter can be reused and adjusted to also enable removal of bacteria or odours. We anticipate that our purification approach will be useful for the development of specialist air purifiers that might prove useful in a settings such as hospitals, factories and mines., (© 2022. Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of aerosol spread of infection. We have conducted a study to detect bacterial contamination of room surfaces and room air during CT colonography and confirm the efficacy of room disinfection procedures carried out between examinations., Methods: Systematic sampling of the CT examination couch and horizontal surfaces 1 m and 3 m from the couch was performed before and after patient examinations. A 1 m 3 sample of room air was obtained during patient examinations. Samples were processed using routine laboratory methods. A case-control study design was used (30 CT colonography and 30 routine body CT scans)., Results: Evidence of airborne dissemination of bacteria was detected in >30% of CT colonography examinations and <10% of control examinations ( p = 0.01). No pathogenic bacteria were detected in surface samples taken before patient examinations., Conclusion: The room disinfection policy in use in our CT department is effective in eliminating pathogenic bacteria from surfaces in the patient environment. CT colonography causes contamination of room air with enteric bacteria in a significant proportion of cases., Advances in Knowledge: CT colonography may possibly be an aerosol-generating procedure. Larger-scale investigation is needed to fully evaluate this potential infection risk.

Plastic crisis, especially for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) bottles, has been one of the greatest challenges for the earth and human beings. Processing recycled PET (rPET) into functional materials has the dual significance of both sustainable development and economy. Providing more possibilities for the engineered application of rPET, porous PET fibers can further enhance the high specific surface area of electrospun membranes. Here, we use a two-step strategy of electrospinning and postprocessing to successfully control the surface morphology of rPET fibers. Through a series of optical and thermal characterizations, the porous morphology formation mechanism and crystallinity induced by solvents of rPET fibers were discussed. Then, this work further investigated both PM2.5 air pollutants and protein filtration performance of rPET fibrous membrane. The high capture capability of rPET membrane demonstrated its potential application as an integrated high-efficiency aerosol filtering solution.

Solid particles, predominantly in micron and submicron sizes, have repeatedly been observed as a threat to a human health unique compared to the other textures of the same materials. In this work, the hypothesis the solid metal-based particles play a role in the pathogenesis of chronic hypertrophic rhinitis was investigated in patients who had not responded positively to medication. In the group of 40 randomly selected patients indicated for surgical mucotomy, the presence of solid micro- and submicron particles present in their nasal mucosa was assessed. For comparison, a set of 13 reference samples from patients without diagnosed chronic hypertrophic rhinitis was evaluated. The analysis was performed using Raman microspectroscopy. The advantage of this method is the direct identification of compounds. The main detected compounds in the mucosa samples of patients with chronic hypertrophic rhinitis were TiO 2 , carbon-based compounds, CaCO 3 , Ca(Fe, Mg, Mn)(CO 3 ) 2 MgCO 3 , Fe 2 O 3 , BaSO 4 , FeCO 3 and compounds of Al and Si, all of which may pose a health risk to a living organism. In the reference samples, only TiO 2 and amorphous carbon were found. In the control group mucosa, a significantly lower presence of most of the assessed compounds was found despite the longer time they had to accumulate them due to their higher mean age. Identification and characterisation of such chemicals compounds in a living organism could contribute to the overall picture of the health of the individual and lead to a better understanding of the possible causes not only in the chronic hypertrophic rhinitis, but also in other mucosal and idiopathic diseases., (© 2021. Outdoor ozone transported indoors initiates oxidative chemistry, forming volatile organic products. The influence of ozone chemistry on indoor air composition has not been directly quantified in normally occupied residences. Here, we explore indoor ozone chemistry in a house in California with two adult inhabitants. We utilize space- and time-resolved measurements of ozone and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) acquired over an 8-wk summer campaign. Despite overall low indoor ozone concentrations (mean value of 4.3 ppb) and a relatively low indoor ozone decay constant (1.3 h -1 ), we identified multiple VOCs exhibiting clear contributions from ozone-initiated chemistry indoors. These chemicals include 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one (6-MHO), 4-oxopentanal (4-OPA), nonenal, and C8-C12 saturated aldehydes, which are among the commonly reported products from laboratory studies of ozone interactions with indoor surfaces and with human skin lipids. These VOCs together accounted for ≥12% molecular yield with respect to house-wide consumed ozone, with the highest net product yield for nonanal (≥3.5%), followed by 6-MHO (2.7%) and 4-OPA (2.6%). Although 6-MHO and 4-OPA are prominent ozonolysis products of skin lipids (specifically squalene), ozone reaction with the body envelopes of the two occupants in this house are insufficient to explain the observed yields. Relatedly, we observed that ozone-driven chemistry continued to produce 6-MHO and 4-OPA even after the occupants had been away from the house for 5 d. Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) pollution causes serious health disorders, because PM 2.5 becomes deposited in the tracheobronchial and alveoli regions. In the extrathoracic region, there are more deposits of coarse particulate matter than fine particulates. As adverse health issues caused by coarse particulates have not been well investigated, this study examined the cytotoxicity of water-soluble extracts of both fine (0.05-3 µm, PM 0.05-3 ) and coarse (> 3 µm, PM >3 ) particulates collected from April 2016 to March 2019 in Fukuoka, Japan. Also evaluated were concentrations of NH 4 + and SO 4 2- , multi-components of well-known secondary generation substances. The findings revealed that PM >3 showed stronger cytotoxic effects on mast cell lines than PM 0.05-3 . Cytotoxic effects were observed at concentrations of over 15 mM of (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 and over 30 mM of NH 4 Cl. In contrast, Na 2 SO 4 caused few cytotoxic effects up to a concentration of 50 mM. The causative substances for this cytotoxicity may not have been NH 4 + and SO 4 2- because their PM >3 concentrations indicating the largest cytotoxic effects were 1 and 0.4 mM, respectively. The cytotoxicities of PM >3 and PM 0.05-3 were the highest in the first half of FY2016. These cytotoxicities seem to be due to cross-border pollution, although this pollution has been declining in recent years. An increasing trend of cytotoxicity was observed in the second half of FY2018. This study showed that cytotoxicity and particulate concentrations are not always correlated. Thus, we should focus not only on the quantity of atmospheric particulate matter, but also on its quality.

Biofiltration is a typical air pollution control process for the treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Mass transfer of hydrophobic VOCs to the biofilm is limited which leads to low removal efficiency (RE). Aiming to enhance the transport of hydrophobic VOCs, the effect of hydrophobic fumed silica (HFS) addition to a biofilter (BF) for pentane removal was studied in this paper. The effect of HFS on pentane removal was evaluated by daily RE measurements and periodical headspace gas pentane pulse injections using SIFT-MS as analysis apparatus. The BF was operated during more than 100 days at an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 120 s reaching an elimination capacity (EC) up to 93.8 g pentane m -3  h -1 . At the last stage of the study, when a higher nutrient pulse and HFS to a concentration of 1.5% w/w wet were added, the BF showed better EC (46.3 ± 14.9 g pentane m -3  h -1 ; RE = 96.2%) compared to the previous stages (28.3 ± 4.4 g pentane m -3  h -1 ; RE = 68.3%). This overall performance improvement was in line with the short peak perturbation experiments carried out during the operational time which demonstrated, by net retention time (NRT) determination, to be a fast and reliable tool to gain insights into the behaviour of pollutants inside the BF and its state. Pentane demonstrated to have larger interactions with the packing material when HFS was added. The use of Fusarium solani fungi in an expanded perlite packed biofilter was investigated for the treatment of a hexane polluted waste gas stream using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). The latter analytical technique proved to be of utmost importance to evaluate the performance of the biofilter at high time resolution (seconds) under various transient conditions, analogous to industrial situations. The biofilter was operational for 277 days with inlet loads varying between 1 and 14 g m -3 h -1 and applying an empty bed residence time of 116 s. The results showed a positive behaviour of the biofilter against different types of disruptions such as: (i) changes in the relative humidity of the inlet gas, (ii) stopping the carbon supply for 1, 5 and 10 days, (iii) varying the inlet hexane concentration (step increases and intermittent pulses) and (iv) limiting the availability of nutrients. X-ray imaging (both conventional 2D μCT and X-ray fluorescence, XRF) was applied for the first time on biofilter media in order to get insight in the internal structure of expanded perlite and to visualise the biomass growth. The hygienic risk associated with evaporative cooling systems in Germany is currently only assessed by determining concentrations of Legionella spp. in the corresponding cooling waters. Relevant for the health risk is however the load of Legionella in emitted aerosols. In this work aerosol emissions from four industrial cooling systems (A - D) were analyzed. A microbiological air bioburden factor (MABF) is suggested to be useful to assess the overall microbiological load of emitted air and to judge the efficiency of droplet separation and overall microbiological retention. Whereas the MABF by itself only serves as a technical quality assurance (QA) parameter, the hygienic relevance has to be seen in combination with the assessment of Legionella either contained in the aerosol or in the cooling water. Plate counting of colonies was an appropriate method to quantify Legionella spp. in aerosols given the short time of flight at the chosen sampling locations and resulting low risk of desiccation. qPCR data on the other hand proved more reproducible than the culture approach to quantify Legionella spp. concentrations in cooling water-. The application of qPCR also allowed to assess the relative proportion of Legionella pneumophila within the total pool of Legionella which adds epidemiological relevance to risk assessment. A traffic light system was proposed to guide interpretation of qPCR data. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from cigarettes are one of the main pollutants affecting public health. Herein, a cellulose cigarette filter with three-dimensional (3D) hierarchically porous structure was fabricated using a natural cellulose Juncus effusus (JE) fiber, whose pore size was well controlled by biocompatible polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) using a simple dip-dry method. The adsorption capacity and mechanism of the PVP-JE filter tips (PJF) against PAHs were investigated in detail. Compared with conventional cellulose acetate filter tips (CAF), the cellulose PJF were superior at filtering and adsorbing of PAHs from mainstream smoke with the removal efficiency of 61.79 %, which was 22.57 % higher than that of CAF (39.22 %). The ternary structures including polymer filter membrane, 3D network, and interconnected channels were demonstrated as the main roles for highly effective removal of PAHs. Antimicrobial resistance is a global health risk, and the presence of resistant bacteria in the environment may be an indicative of fecal pollution. The objective of this study has been to assess the antibiotic resistance of airborne coliforms near a highly impacted urban river that may contain high levels of fecal waste. The pilot study has been located within an Andean river basin, the Choqueyapu River basin, which flows through La Paz city in Bolivia. Bioaerosol samples have been collected using liquid impingement and plated on mTEC agar. Coliforms have been detected within 80% of the air samples. The resistance profiles of coliforms present in 20 air samples have been determined by using a modified Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion test against amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, meropenem, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, and tetracycline, antibiotics commonly used to treat gram-negative infection. Broad patterns of antibiotic resistance have been observed throughout the study, with coliforms from at least one sample exhibiting resistance to each of the tested antibiotics. Resistance to sulfamethoxazole and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid has been the most commonly observed, with coliforms in 73% and 60% of samples which helps to demonstrate resistance to these antibiotics, respectively. This study provides insight into the prevalence of airborne, antibiotic resistant coliforms near concentrated fecal waste streams and this highlights an underappreciated hazard and the potential exposure risk in areas where fecal waste may become aerosolized at any given time., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier GmbH. Bacteria and fungi are abundant and ubiquitous in bioaerosols from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). However, the specificity and interactions of bioaerosol microorganism, particularly of potential pathogens, from WWTPs are still poorly understood. In this study, we investigated 9 full-scale WWTPs in different areas of China for 3 years, and found microbial variations in bioaerosols to be associated with regions, seasons, and processes. Relative humidity, total suspended particulates, wind speed, temperature, total organic carbon, NH 4 + , Cl - and Ca 2+ were the major factors influencing this variation, and meteorological factors were more strongly associated with the variation than chemical composition. In total, 95 and 22 potential bacterial and fungal pathogens were detected in bioaerosols, respectively. The linear discriminant analysis effect size method suggested that Serratia, Yersinia, Klebsiella, and Bacillus were discriminative genera in bioaerosols on the whole, and were also hub niches in the interactions within potential bacterial pathogens, based on network analysis. Strong co-occurrences such as Serratia-Bacillus and Staphylococcus-Candida, and co-exclusions such as Rhodotorula-Cladosporium and Pseudomonas-Candida, were found within and between potential bacterial and fungal pathogens in bioaerosols from WWTPs. Depletion of chloride from sea-salt aerosols affects their hygroscopicity, cloud condensation nuclei activity as well as microphysical and chemical properties of aerosols and clouds modifying earth-atmosphere radiative balance. Here, we proposed five possible reaction pathways through which the inorganic acids (H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 ) could deplete chloride from sea-salt aerosols. We determined "maximum potential contribution" (MPC) of each acid and compared the MPC with actual chloride depletion. This step-by-step approach enables us to identify the most preferable reaction pathway(s) for coarse, superfine, accumulation and ultrafine aerosols over a Himalayan station (Darjeeling), a tropical urban station (Kolkata) and a tropical mangrove forest at the north-east coast of Bay of Bengal (Sundarban) in India. Over Kolkata and Darjeeling, locally generated acids reacted with transported sea-salts. Over Sundarban, the locally generated sea-salts from the Bay of Bengal reacted with the acids of biomass burning plume transported from Eastern Ghat and continental haze transported from upper Indo-Gangetic Plain. The average chloride depletion in PM10 ranged between 70 and 74% over Sundarban and 31-34% over Kolkata and Darjeeling. We observed that HNO 3 (g) depleted the larger (>1 μm) chlorides whereas H 2 SO 4 (g) depleted the smaller (<1 μm) chlorides over Kolkata and Darjeeling. However, in addition to H 2 SO 4 (g) and HNO 3 (g), some other species could be involved in chloride depletion over Sundarban mainly during winter. Currently people are aware of the risk related to pollution exposure. Thus odor annoyances are considered a warning about the possible presence of toxic volatile compounds. Malodor often generates immediate alarm among citizens, and electronic noses are convenient instruments to detect mixture of odorant compounds with high monitoring frequency. In this paper we present a study on pattern recognition on ambient air composition in proximity of a gas and oil pretreatment plant by elaboration of data from an electronic nose implementing 10 metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) sensors and positioned outdoor continuously during three months. A total of 80,017 e-nose vectors have been elaborated applying the self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm and then k-means clustering on SOM outputs on the whole data set evidencing an anomalous data cluster. Retaining data characterized by dynamic responses of the multisensory system, a SOM with 264 recurrent sensor responses to air mixture sampled at the site and four main air type profiles (clusters) have been identified. One of this sensor profiles has been related to the odor fugitive emissions of the plant, by using ancillary data from a total volatile organic compound (VOC) detector and wind speed and direction data. The overall and daily cluster frequencies have been evaluated, allowing us to identify the daily duration of presence at the monitoring site of air related to industrial emissions. The refined model allowed us to confirm the anomaly detection of the sensor responses.

Atmospheric pollution by particulate matter represents a significant health risk and needs continuous monitoring by air quality networks that provide mass concentrations for PM10 and PM2.5 (particles with diameter smaller than 10 m and 2.5 m, respectively). We present here a new approach to monitor the urban particles content, using six years of aerosols number concentration measurements for particles in the 0.2-50 m size range. These measurements are performed by the Light Optical Aerosols Counter (LOAC) instrument onboard the tethered touristic balloon "Ballon de Paris Generali", in Paris, France. Such measurements have allowed us first to detect at ground a seasonal variability in the particulate matter content, due to the origin of the particles (anthropogenic pollution, pollens), and secondly, to retrieve the mean evolution of particles concentrations with height above ground up to 150 m. Measurements were also conducted up to 300 m above ground during major pollution events. The vertical evolution of concentrations varies from one event to another, depending on the origin of the pollution and on the meteorological conditions. These measurements have shown the interest of performing particle number concentrations measurements for the air pollution monitoring in complement with regulatory mass concentrations measurement, to better evaluate the intensity of the pollution event and to better consider the effect of smallest particles, which are more dangerous for human health., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest. A novel combined vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (VA-DLLME)-micro-solid-phase extraction (μ-SPE) procedure for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in ambient fine particulate matter of aerodynamic diameter of  ≤ 2.5 µm (PM 2.5 ), was developed. PM 2.5 was collected on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-coated glass fiber filter, that was first processed by ultrasonicating in aqueous solution. Then, VA-DLLME, followed by µ-SPE, were applied to the solution using 1-octanol and graphene oxide as extractant and sorbent, respectively for extracting the PAHs. The PAHs were determined by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Parameters affecting the extraction efficiency including selection of the sorbent, duration of DLLME and µ-SPE, desorption solvent type, and ultrasonication-assisted desorption time were investigated. Under the optimum extraction conditions, the method exhibited linear ranges of 0.5-50 μg/L and 0.5-100 μg/L depending on the analytes. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.013 μg/L-0.135 μg/L. The developed method was applied to determine the PAHs in genuine PM 2.5 samples collected on PTFE glass fiber filters. The concentration levels in the atmospheric PM 2.5 were determined to be from below the limit of quantification to 0.135 ng/m 3 . Toluene is highly toxic and mutagenic, and it is generally used as an industrial solvent. Thus, toluene removal from air is necessary. To solve the problem of reducing high toluene concentrations with a short gas retention time (GRT), a quorum-sensing molecule [N-(3-oxododecanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone] (OHL) was added to a biotrickling filter (BTF). In this study, a BTF was used to treat synthetic and natural waste gases containing toluene. An extensive analysis was performed to understand the removal efficiency, removal characteristics, and bacterial community of the BTF. The addition of 20 μM OHL to the BTF significantly improved toluene removal, and more than 99.2% toluene removal was achieved at a GRT of 0.5 min when natural waste gas containing toluene (590-1020 ppm or 2.21-3.83 g m -3 ) was introduced. The maximum inlet load for toluene was 337.9 g m -3 h -1 . Moreover, the BTF exhibited satisfactory adaptability to shock loading and shutdown operations. Pseudomonadaceae (33.0%) and Comamonadaceae (26.3%) were predominant bacteria in the system after a 98-day operation. These bacteria were responsible for toluene degradation. The optimal moisture content and low pressure drop for system operations demonstrated that the BTF was energy and cost efficient. Therefore, processing through a BTF with OHL is a favorable technique for toluene treatment.

The particulate matter (PM) could be simultaneously removed during the wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) process. To analyze the underlying mechanism and removal efficiency, the PM removal process in a desulfurization system was numerically simulated based on the population balance model and general dynamics equation in this study. The equation was solved using the fixed-step Monte Carlo method to determine the PM removal characteristics under different working conditions (such as spray intensity, velocity of the flue gas, and layers of slurry spray). When the flue gas velocity decreased from 7 to 3 m/s, the removal efficiency increased from 90.93 to 93.52%, and when the mean geometric droplet size decreased from 3 to 1 mm, the removal efficiency increased from 67.18 to 99.14%. Besides, large diameter PM was more easily removed by the desulfurization system. Thus, the numerical simulation method was proven to be feasible by comparing these results with field measurements of a WFGD system in a coal-fired power plant.

Grilling restaurants are a major contributor to airborne particulate matter (PM) in metropolitan areas. In this study, the removal of PM during the grilling of pork belly using an orifice scrubber, which is a form of gas-induced spray scrubber, was assessed. During grilling, the particle mass concentration was the highest for 1.0 < PM ≤ 2.5 μm (55.5% of total PM emissions), followed by 0.5 < PM ≤ 1.0 (27.1%), PM ≤ 0.5 (10.7%), and PM > 2.5 μm (7.0%). The PM removal efficiency of the orifice scrubber at a gas flow of 4.5 m 3 min -1 was > 99.7% for PM ≥ 2.5 μm, 89.4% for 1.0 < PM ≤ 2.5 μm, 62.1% for 0.5 < PM ≤ 1.0, and 36.5% for PM ≤ 0.5 μm. Although further research is necessary to optimize its use, the orifice scrubber offers a user-friendly technology for the control of PM in small grilling restaurants because of its simple design, uncomplicated operation, and satisfactory PM removal performance.

Particulate matter and volatile organic compounds have emerged as a prime environmental concern with increasing air pollution in metropolitan cities leading to lung and heart-related issues. This paper describes a facile and novel method for fabrication of polyester based air filter via surface coating with Sericin for imparting effective removal of particulate matter and volatile organic compounds. A simple dip-coating method followed by thermal fixation has been adopted to coat Sericin on the polyester fiber. The developed changes in surface functionality and morphology of the polyester fiber were confirmed by Attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and Field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis. The fabricated air filter was tested for removal of particulate matter (generated burning incense stick) and volatile organic compounds (generated vaporizing gasoline), in an indoor chamber. The Sericin coated filter was able to remove the PM 2.5 and PM 10 (from 1000 μg/m 3 level to 5 μg/m 3 in a 6.28 m 3 chamber) within 27 and 23 min of operation, respectively. The fabricated filter very effectively removed particulate matter for 2160 cycles with intermittent washing. The Sericin-coated air filter also proved very effective for removal of volatile organic compounds (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene) from an indoor chamber at a varying initial concentration of 100-1000 μg/m 3 . The adsorption behavior was described by Langmuir-Freundlich (sips) isotherm and pseudo-first order kinetics with minimal error. The photocatalytic deactivation of volatile organic compounds and mold fungi using TiO 2 modified with mono- and bimetallic (Pt, Cu, Ag) particles is reported in this study. The mono- and bimetal-modified (Pt, Cu, Ag) titanium(IV) oxide photocatalysts were prepared by chemical reduction method and characterized using XRD, XPS, DR/UV-Vis, BET, and TEM analysis. The effect of incident light, type and content of mono- and bimetallic nanoparticles deposited on titanium(IV) oxide was studied. Photocatalytic activity of as-prepared nanocomposites was examined in the gas phase using LEDs array. High photocatalytic activity of Ag/Pt-TiO 2 and Cu/Pt-TiO 2 in the reaction of toluene degradation resulted from improved efficiency of interfacial charge transfer process, which was consistent with the fluorescence quenching effect revealed by photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra. The photocatalytic deactivation of Penicillium chrysogenum, a pathogenic fungi present in the indoor environment, especially in a damp or water-damaged building using mono- and bimetal-modified (Pt, Cu, Ag) titanium(IV) oxide was evaluated for the first time. Removing benzene from indoor space plays an important role in indoor air purification. A novel filter with vegetal fiber paper (VFP) as matrix hosting silica gel is proposed in this paper for benzene removal. In order to investigate the feasibility and performance of this idea, firstly, three pieces of VFP samples impregnated with different amounts of silica gel are fabricated and their benzene adsorption quantities are tested. The results show that three times is recommended as the optimal number for impregnating. The VFP sample impregnated with silica gel after the third impregnating exhibits commendable coating stability and good benzene adsorption performance. Additionally, at low relative pressure (P b /P s  ≤ 0.05), the experimental data of benzene adsorption isotherms fit well with the Langmuir model with R 2 greater than 0.97. Then, two actual filters made of VFP impregnated with silica gel after the third impregnating were fabricated. It is found that the pressure drop of the actual filter is only 1200 Pa/m when the air velocity is 2 m/s. Besides, the one-pass efficiency of the filter can reach to 19.44%. The main aim of this work is to study gas-phase toluene removal in one- and two-liquid phase biotrickling filters (O/TLP-BTF) and model the BTF performance using artificial neural networks (ANNs). The TLP-BTF was operated for 60 d in the presence of silicone oil at empty bed residence times (EBRTs) of 120, 60, and 45 s, respectively, and toluene concentrations in the range of 0.9-3.1 g m -3 . A t-test analysis indicated that increasing the silicone oil volume ratio from 5 to 10% v/v, did not significantly improve the TLP-BTF performance (p-value = 0.65 > 0.05). The results from ANN modeling showed that toluene removal was more negatively affected by the inlet concentration (casual index, CI = -5.63) due to the kinetic limitation. The CI values for inlet concentration (+4.01) and liquid trickling rate (-2.45) indicated that the diffusion-limited regime controlled the removal process in the OLP-BTF., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Objective: Stachybotrys chartarum is a hydrophilic fungal species commonly found as a contaminant in water-damaged building materials. Although several studies have suggested that S. chartarum exposure elicits a variety of adverse health effects, the ability to characterize the pulmonary immune responses to exposure is limited by delivery methods that do not replicate environmental exposure. This study aimed to develop a method of S. chartarum aerosolization to better model inhalation exposures. Materials and methods: An acoustical generator system (AGS) was previously developed and utilized to aerosolize and deliver fungal spores to mice housed in a multi-animal nose-only exposure chamber. In this study, methods for cultivating, heat-inactivating, and aerosolizing two macrocyclic trichothecene-producing strains of S. chartartum using the AGS are described. Results and discussion: In addition to conidia, acoustical generation of one strain of S. chartarum resulted in the aerosolization of fungal fragments (<2 µm aerodynamic diameter) derived from conidia, phialides, and hyphae that initially comprised 50% of the total fungal particle count but was reduced to less than 10% over the duration of aerosolization. Acoustical generation of heat-inactivated S. chartarum did not result in a similar level of fragmentation. Delivery of dry, unextracted S. chartarum using these aerosolization methods resulted in pulmonary inflammation and immune cell infiltration in mice inhaling viable, but not heat-inactivated S. chartarum . Conclusions: These methods of S. chartarum growth and aerosolization allow for the delivery of fungal bioaerosols to rodents that may better simulate natural exposure within water-damaged indoor environments.

Alkali metal chlorides emitted from sintering flue gas are easily adsorbed on the surface of activated carbon (AC) in the purification process. In this paper, NaCl particles adsorbing onto AC were simulated by impregnation method, and the size and morphology of NaCl particles were similar to those of NaCl-PM 10 emitted from sintering flue gas. With the adsorption of NaCl particles, 2-10-μm pores of AC were filled, and the specific surface area of AC decreased. But NaCl led to the increase of acidic functional groups on the surface of AC. When 0.75 wt% NaCl was adsorbed, it was beneficial for AC catalytic denitration (de-NOx), because the chemical reaction was strengthened by acidic functional groups, so it showed a certain promotion of de-NOx efficiency. As 1.5 wt% NaCl and 3 wt% NaCl were adsorbed, NaCl had an inhibitory effect on AC de-NOx, which was because the specific surface area of AC decreased, and the prevention of physical adsorption played a major role. As a result, the de-NOx efficiency of AC adsorbed with 3 wt% NaCl decreased from 40.59 to 23.02% at 150 °C. Therefore, the absorption of NaCl fine particles on AC should not exceed 0.75 wt%.

The purpose of this study was to develop a new method for the sampling and analysis of naphthalene (Nap) and phenanthrene (Phe) in air. XAD-2 sorbent was prepared with polyaniline (PANI) to increase its adsorption area. Thus, 22-gauge needles were packed with XAD-2/PANI sorbent for the extraction of Nap and Phe, and sampling of the analytes of interest. The compounds were dynamically sampled from the headspace of the flask in laboratory and then analyzed using a gas chromatography (GC) device equipped with flame ionization detector (FID). The needle trap device (NTD) with the proposed sorbent was more sensitive and accurate than the NIOSH 5515 method. The results showed that the optimal temperature and time for the desorption of the analytes were 350 °C and 8 min, respectively. The analytical parameters such as carryover effect, breakthrough volume, and storage time were examined. The repeatability of the method was determined to be 9.4-13.5% for Nap and 7.1-15.7% for Phe. The limits of detection (LOD) for the analytes were in the range 0.002 - 0.09 ng L -1 , and the limits of quantitation (LOQ) were in the range 0.01- 0.23 ng L -1 . It was also found that the NTD packed with XAD-2/PANI sorbent was a sensitive and cost-effective method, and offered a high accuracy for the sampling and analysis of PAHs in air., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. As one of the main air pollutants, nitrogen oxides (NOx) have serious effects on human health and the environment. In our previous study, we found that Mn-MOF-74 shows excellent catalytic performance for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction with NH3 being the reductant (NH3-SCR) at low temperature. To obtain a further understanding of the NH3-SCR mechanism in Mn-MOF-74, in this paper, we investigated two important parts of the NH3-SCR process in Mn-MOF-74 using the density functional theory (DFT) method. On the one hand, the structural characteristics of two types of oxygen vacancies of Mn-MOF-74, namely carboxyl oxygen vacancies and hydroxyl oxygen vacancies, and their adsorption properties to reaction species were calculated. It was found that the oxygen vacancies not only activate the reaction species, but also promote the desorption of NO2 molecules from metal sites for the subsequent rapid SCR reactions. On the other hand, we studied the effect of H2O on the structural stability and catalytic performance of Mn-MOF-74. It was found that the interaction of Mn-O bonds was weakened by H2O. Therefore, the influence of H2O should be considered for the future design of MOF-based catalysts for the SCR process.

The application of an anoxic biotrickling filter (BTF) for H 2 S removal from contaminated gas streams is a promising technology for simultaneous H 2 S and NO 3 - removal. Three transient-state conditions, i.e. different liquid flow rates, wet-dry bed operations and H 2 S shock loads, were applied to a laboratory-scale anoxic BTF. In addition, bioaugmentation of the BTF with a H 2 S removing-strain, Paracoccus MAL 1HM19, to enhance the biomass stability was investigated. Liquid flow rates (120, 60 and 30 L d -1 ) affected the pH and NO 3 - removal efficiency (RE) in the liquid phase. Wet-dry bed operations at 2-2 h and 24-24 h reduced the H 2 S elimination capacity (EC) by 60-80%, while the operations at 1-1 h and 12-12 h had a lower effect on the BTF performance. When the BTF was subjected to H 2 S shock loads by instantly increasing the gas flow rate (from 60 to 200 L h -1 ) and H 2 S inlet concentration (from 112 (± 15) to 947 (± 151) ppm v ), the BTF still showed a good H 2 S RE (>93%, EC of 37.8 g S m -3  h -1 ). Strict microbial control is required in pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, for which environmental microbial monitoring is fundamental. Appropriate microbial control is based on understanding the abundance and community structure of the microbes in the target environment, but most microbes are not culturable by conventional methods. Here, we determined the bacterial abundance and assessed the environmental microbiome in a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility using rRNA gene-targeted quantitative PCR (qPCR) and high-throughput sequencing of rRNA gene fragments. A commercially available microbial particle counter was also used for real-time measurements. In the air of the first gowning room and the passageway of the facility, the microbial particle number determined by both the particle counter and qPCR was ca. 10 4 /m 3 ; the number of microbial particles was about 100 times the number of culturable bacteria. Thus, the measurement of microbes using the particle counter was accurate. In the second gowning room of the facility, managed by a HEPA filter, the number of particles in the air was dependent on human movement, and was below the detection limit around 10 min after movement. Bacteria of the phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were frequently detected in samples from the facility; these bacteria are constituents of the human microbiota. Among fungi, Aspergillus and Cladosporium were detected in the air, and Malassezia was dominant on the walls. Ammonia (NH 3 ) emission is one of the major environmental issues in livestock farming. Gas measurements are required to study the emission process, to establish emission factors, and to assess the efficiency of emission reduction techniques. However, the current methods for acquiring reference measurements of NH 3 are either high in cost or labor intensive. In this study, a cost-effective ammonia monitoring system (AMS) was constructed from a commercially-available gas analyzing module based on tunable diode laser absorption (TDLA) spectroscopy. To cope with the negative measurement biases caused by differing inlet pressures, a set of correction equations was formulated. Field validation of the AMS on NH 3 measurement was conducted in a fattening pig barn, where the system was compared to a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyzer. Under two test conditions in a fattening pig barn, the absolute error of the AMS measurements with respect to the average obtained values between the AMS and the FTIR was respectively 0.66 and 0.08 ppm v , corresponding to 5.9% and 0.5% relative error. Potential sources of the measurement uncertainties in both the AMS and FTIR were discussed. The test results demonstrated that the AMS was capable of performing high-quality measurement with sub-ppm accuracy, making it a promising cost-effective tool for establishing NH 3 emission factors and studying NH 3 emission processes in pig houses.

Artefact conditions need to be continuously monitored to avoid degradation effects naturally caused by time and public exploitation in order to increase the value of cultural assets. In this way, the atmospheric analysis of both biological and chemical pollutants potentially present inside conservation environments represents valid support for the adoption of preventive conservation actions by evaluating periodically the presence of risk for the same artefacts. The aim of the present study was to analyze the fungal particles, potentially biodeteriogen, through aerobiological volumetric monitoring, particularly inside valuable historical, artistic, and cultural sites. Different exposition and conservation typologies of the artefacts with different flows of visitors were considered. The applied methodologies have furnished a reliable description of biological air pollution due to the presence of fungal spores-moreover, they have allowed for the prevention of risk situations and the measurement of their evolution in order to limit degradation processes. Through aerobiological monitoring, it was possible to provide important indications for interventions of prevention, conservation and restoration of cultural heritage in indoor environments.

Adsorption is a typical method for air pollutant removal from flue gas. A CuS-modified active coke (CuS/AC) sorbent was developed to improve the elemental mercury removal efficiency from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) flue gas. The influences of the loading amount of CuS, reaction temperature, and flue gas components including O 2 , SO 2 , H 2 O, and HCl on Hg 0 removal efficiency were investigated, respectively. The results showed that the mercury adsorption capacity of CuS/AC (20%) sorbent was about 7.17 mg/g with 50% breakthrough threshold, which is much higher than that of virgin active coke. The analysis of XPS indicated that HgS was the main species of mercury on spent CuS/AC, which implied that adsorption and oxidation were both included in Hg 0 removal. S 2 2- played a vital role in the oxidation of physically adsorbed Hg 0 . Meanwhile, the common components of MSWI flue gas exhibited no significant inhibition effect on Hg 0 removal by CuS/AC sorbent. CuS/AC sorbent is a promising sorbent for the mercury removal from MSWI flue gas.

Background: Packing materials is a critical design consideration when employing biological reactor to treat malodorous gases. The acidification of packing bed usually results in a significant drop in the removal efficiency. In the present study, a biotrickling filter (BTF2) packed with plastic balls in the upper layer and with lava rocks in the bottom layer, was proposed to mitigate the acidification., Results: Results showed that using combined packing materials efficiently enhanced the removal performance of BTF2 when compared with BTF1, which was packed with sole lava rocks. Removal efficiencies of more than 92.5% on four sulfur compounds were achieved in BTF2. Average pH value in its bottom packing bed was about 4.86, significantly higher than that in BTF1 (2.85). Sulfate and elemental sulfur were observed to accumulate more in BTF1 than in BTF2. Analysis of principal coordinate analysis proved that structure of microbial communities in BTF2 changed less after the shutdown but more when the initial pH value was set at 5.5. Network analysis of significant co-occurrence patterns based on the correlations between microbial taxa revealed that BTF2 harbored more diverse microorganisms involving in the bio-oxidation of sulfur compounds and had more complex interactions between microbial species., Conclusions: Results confirmed that using combined packing materials effectively improved conditions for the growth of microorganisms. The robustness of reactor against acidification, adverse temperature and gas supply shutdown was greatly enhanced. These provided a theoretical basis for using mixed packing materials to improve removal performance.

This study examined the use of high dosages of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) (253.7 nm) to deal with various concentrations of air pollutants, such as formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), under various conditions of humidity. A number of irradiation methods were applied for various durations in field studies to examine the efficiency of removing HCHO, TVOC, bacteria, and fungi. The removal efficiency of air pollutants (HCHO and bacteria) through long-term exposure to UVGI appears to increase with time. The effects on TVOC and fungi concentration were insignificant in the first week; however, improvements were observed in the second week. No differences were observed regarding the removal of HCHO and TVOC among the various irradiation methods in this study; however significant differences were observed in the removal of bacteria and fungi., Competing Interests: This study did not cooperate with the government and there was no conflict of interest.

Large amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from industrial, mobile, and domestic sources, causing adverse effects on human health and environment. Among VOCs, toluene and isopropanol (IPA) are commonly used as solvent, soldering flux, and spray paint and their emissions need to be reduced. Several VOCs abatement technologies are available to reduce VOC emission and photocatalytic oxidation of VOC is regarded as a viable technique due to its advantage of utilizing solar energy. TiO 2 has been investigated for its oxidation capability toward VOCs because of its good photocatalytic activity. However the utilization is limited to UV due to its wider bandgap; furthermore, its fast recombination rate of electron-hole pair reduces the oxidation rate of VOCs. Black-TiO 2 and perovskite-type photocatalyst such as LaFeO 3 can be applied to enhance photocatalytic activity due to narrower bandgap and longer electron-hole pair lifetime. In this study, black-TiO 2 and LaFeO 3 are prepared and investigated for their photocatalytic oxidation rates toward toluene and IPA. Results show that toluene removals achieved with black-TiO 2 and LaFeO 3 are 89% and 98% while IPA removals are 90% and 94%, respectively. Both photocatalysts show better photocatalytic activity than TiO 2 and good absorption capability toward visible light. Graphical abstract.

CO 2 , SO 2 , and NO are the main components of flue gas and can cause serious environmental issues. Utilization of these compounds in oleaginous microalgae cultivation not only could reduce air pollution but could also produce feedstock for biodiesel production. However, the continuous input of SO 2 and NO inhibits microalgal growth. In this study, the toxicity of simulated flue gas (15% CO 2 , 0.03% SO 2 , and 0.03% NO, balanced with N 2 ) was reduced through automatic pH feedback control. Integrated lipid production and CO 2 fixation with the removal of SO 2 and NO was achieved. Using this technique, a lipid content of 38.0% DW was achieved in Chlorella pyrenoidosa XQ-20044. The lipid composition and fatty acid profile indicated that lipid production by C. pyrenoidosa XQ-20044 cultured with flue gas is suitable as a biodiesel feedstock; 81.2% of the total lipids were neutral lipids and 99.5% of the total fatty acids were C16 and C18. The ratio of saturated fatty acids to monounsaturated fatty acids in the microalgal lipid content was 74.5%. In addition, CO 2 , SO 2 , and NO from the simulated flue gas were fixed and converted to biomass and lipids with a removal efficiency of 95.9%, 100%, and 84.2%, respectively. Furthermore, the utilization efficiencies of CO 2 , SO 2 , and NO were equal to or very close to their removal efficiencies. These results provide a novel strategy for combining biodiesel production with biofixation of flue gas.

The removal of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) from the air at pilot-scale with elemental sulfur recovery was evaluated using Fe-EDTA chelate as a single treatment at a pH of about 8.5. This was later combined with a compost biofiltration process for polishing the pre-treated air. Experiments were performed in a unique container system that allowed deploying either Fe-EDTA chelate or Fe-EDTA chelate/biofiltration treatment (hybrid system). The results showed the feasibility of H 2 S removal at concentrations between 200 and 5300 ppmv (H 2 S loading rates of 7-190 g m -3 h -1 ) present in fouled air. The Fe-EDTA chelate as a single treatment was able to remove nearly 99.99% of the H 2 S at inlet concentrations ≤ 2400 ppmv (107 g m -3 h -1 ), while the hybrid system archived undetectable outlet H 2 S concentrations (<1 ppmv) at inlet levels of 4000 and 5300 ppmv. At 5300 ppmv, the Fe-EDTA chelate process H 2 S removal efficiency decreased to 99.20% due to the limitation of oxygen mass transfer in the Fe(III) regeneration reaction. Under the previous conditions, the pH was required to be controlled by the addition of NaOH, due to the likely occurrence of undesirable parallel reactions. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are of public concern due to their adverse health effects. Botanical air filtration is a promising technology for reducing indoor air contaminants, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. This study assessed active botanical biofilters for their single-pass removal efficiency (SPRE) for benzene, ethyl acetate and ambient total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), at concentrations of in situ relevance. Biofilters containing four plant species (Chlorophytum orchidastrum, Nematanthus glabra, Nephrolepis cordifolia 'duffii' and Schefflera arboricola) were compared to discern whether plant selection influenced VOC SPRE. Amongst all tested plant species, benzene SPREs were between 45.54 and 59.50%, with N. glabra the most efficient. The botanical biofilters removed 32.36-91.19% of ethyl acetate, with C. orchidastrum and S. arboricola recording significantly higher ethyl acetate SPREs than N. glabra and N. cordifolia. These findings thus indicate that plant type influences botanical biofilter VOC removal. It is proposed that ethyl acetate SPREs were dependent on hydrophilic adsorbent sites, with increasing root surface area, root diameter and root mass all associated with increasing ethyl acetate SPRE. The high benzene SPRE of N. glabra is likely due to the high wax content in its leaf cuticles. The SPREs for the relatively low levels of ambient TVOCs were consistent amongst plant species, providing no evidence to suggest that in situ TVOC removal is influenced by plant choice. Nonetheless, as inter-species differences do exist for some VOCs, botanical biofilters using a mixture of plants is proposed.

Urban green spaces have the potential to mitigate and regulate atmospheric pollution. However, existing studies have primarily focused on the adsorption effect of different plants on atmospheric particulate matter (PM), whereas the effect of green space on PM has not been adequately addressed. In this study, the effect of different urban green space structures and configurations on PM was investigated through the 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model ENVI-met by treating the green space as a whole based on field monitoring, and at the same time, the regulatory effect of green space on PM was examined by integrating information about the forest stand, PM concentration, and meteorological factors. The results show that the green space primarily affected wind speed but had no significant effect on relative humidity, temperature, or wind direction (P > 0.05). The PM concentration was significantly positively correlated with the relative humidity (P < 0.01), significantly negatively correlated with temperature (P < 0.05), but not significantly correlated with wind speed and direction (P > 0.05). Comparison with the measured values reveals that the ENVI-met model well reflected the differences in PM concentrations between different green spaces and the effect of green space on PM. In different green space structures, the uniform-type structure performed rather poorly at purifying PM, the concave-shaped structure performed the best, and the purifying effectiveness of the incremental-type and convex-shaped structure of green space was higher in the rear region than in the front region; in contrast, the degressional-type green space structure was prone to cause aggregation of the PM in the middle region. Broadleaf and broadleaf mixed forests had a better purifying effectiveness on PM than did coniferous forests, mixed coniferous forests, and coniferous broadleaf mixed forests. With raising awareness of gaseous air pollutants and their harmful impact, adsorption is considered one of the most prominent techniques for gaseous emissions control. The usage of polyaniline as a gas adsorbent is an innovative idea. This work aims to compare the efficacy of synthesized polyaniline nanotubes (PANT) as a novel adsorbent towards inorganic gases (ammonia NH 3 ) and volatile organic compounds (toluene vapor). PANT was prepared via a sol-gel preparation technique. The molecular structure of prepared PANT was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphological structure was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The PANT adsorbent surface area was determined using Brunner Emmett Teller (BET). Dynamic behavior of simulated feed gas mixture of NH 3 and toluene in air were examined using a fixed bed adsorption arrangement. The same adsorption conditions (inlet concentration, gas mixture feed flow rate, and a fixed amount of adsorbent) were applied for both NH 3 and toluene adsorption test. The NH 3 and toluene removal efficiencies were 100% and 96% respectively. Consequently, PANT is an auspicious adsorbent that can be utilized to control the indoor and outdoor gaseous air emissions. This study focuses on the removal of C 4 H 4 S using DC corona discharge plasma. The influences of various factors such as C 4 H 4 S concentration (ppm), temperature (°C), O 2 concentration (%), and dust concentration (mg/m 3 ) on the conversion of C 4 H 4 S were studied. Furthermore, gaseous compositions were determined using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Solid products, which were collected from earth and discharge electrodes, were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that, under the condition of DC corona discharge plasma, C 4 H 4 S converted to CO, CO 2 , S, SO 2 , and SO 4 2- , and that the conversion rate increased with the increase in specific input energy (SIE). The increase of O 2 concentration led to further energy consumption that generated O 3 , which in turn decreased the conversion rate of C 4 H 4 S. The increase in temperature exhibited a positive influence on the conversion of C 4 H 4 S when the SIE was less than 268 J/L. However, above this value of SIE, the temperature affected the conversion of C 4 H 4 S negatively with the increase in SIE. When dust was introduced, the conversion of C 4 H 4 S was significantly improved and the yield of SO 2 reduced due to the reaction which took place among C 4 H 4 S, SO 2 and dust in the electric field. The results showed that the DC corona discharge plasma exhibited considerable potential to remove C 4 H 4 S, while dust contributed positively towards the disposal of C 4 H 4 S. Graphical abstract In this work, DC corona plasma was used to remove thiophene (C 4 H 4 S) from a dust-containing gas stream. The results showed that electron collision, oxidizability of radicals, and existence of O 3 were the main causes of C 4 H 4 S decomposition. The electron collision effects, contents of radicals, O 3 , and the conversion rate of C 4 H 4 S were enhanced with the increase in SIE (specific input energy). The main products consisted of CO, CO 2 , SO 2 , and solid products. The solid products and dust moved to the earth electrode in the electric field.

A full-scale biotrickling filter (BTF) treating acetone air emissions of wood-coating activities showed difficulties to achieve outlet concentrations lower than 125 mg C m -3 , especially for high inlet concentrations and oscillating emissions. To solve this problem, a laboratory investigation on acetone removal was carried out simulating typical industrial conditions: discontinuous and variable inlet concentrations and intermittent spraying. The results were evaluated in terms of removal efficiency and outlet gas emission pattern. Industrial emissions and operational protocols were simulated: inlet load up to 70 g C m -3  h -1 during 2 cycles of 4 h per day and intermittent trickling of 15 min per hour. The outlet gas stream of the pollutant was affected by intermittent spraying, causing a fugitive emission of pollutant. Complete removal efficiency was obtained during non-spraying. Average removal efficiencies higher than 85% were obtained, showing the feasibility of BTF to treat acetone. The outlet gas stream showed a clear dependence on the pH of the trickling liquid, decreasing the removal at pH < 5.5. Thus, a proper control of alkalinity, with regular NaHCO 3 addition, was required for successful operation. The laboratory findings were fruitfully transferred to the industry, and the removal of acetone by full-scale BTF was improved.

Monte Carlo simulations were conducted on a set of flux chamber measurements at a landfill to estimate the relationship between the number of flux chamber samples and study area size on the emission rate measurement accuracy. The spatial variability of flux was addressed in the study by utilizing an existing flux chamber measurement data set that is one of the most dense flux chamber sampling arrays published to date for a landfill. At a probability of 95%, the Monte Carlo simulations indicated that achieving an accuracy within 10% with the flux chamber method is highly unlikely. An accuracy within 20% was achieved for small areas of less than about 0.2 hectares using 220 flux chamber measurements, but achieving this level of accuracy for area emission sources, of similar or greater variability, that are larger than this is highly unlikely. An accuracy within 30% was achieved up to the Full Area of about 0.4 hectares if more than approximately 120 samples were obtained. Even for an accuracy within 50%, at least 40 flux chamber measurements were needed for the Full Area of about 0.4 hectares. Available methods of estimating the number of samples required were compared to the Monte Carlo simulation results. The Monte Carlo simulations indicate that, in general, more samples are required than determined from an existing statistical method, which is a function of the mean and standard deviation of the population. Specifying the number of samples based on a regulatory method results in very poor accuracy. A modification to the statistical method for estimating the number of samples, or for estimating an accuracy for a given probability and number of samples, is proposed., Implications: The flux chamber method is the most widely used method of measuring fugitive emission rates from area sources. However, extrapolation of a set of individual flux chamber samples to a larger area results in area flux measurement values of unknown accuracy. Quantification of the accuracy of the extrapolation of a set of flux chamber measurements would be beneficial for understanding the confidence that can be placed on the measurement results. Guidance as to the appropriate number of flux chamber measurements to achieve a desired level of accuracy would benefit flux chamber method practitioners.

This study examined the effect of potassium permanganate (KMnO 4 )-modified activated carbon for formaldehyde removal under different face velocities and different initial formaldehyde concentrations in building environment. We chose the coconut shell activated carbon due to their high density and purity. Moreover, they have a clear environmental advantage over coal-based carbons, particularly in terms of acidification potential. The chemical properties were characterized by FTIR to show the functional groups, EDS to calculate each component of their energy bands to know how the ratio is. Also, the morphology of the surface was examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The BET determines specific surface area, pore size, and pore volume. It was found that where the initial formaldehyde concentration and the face velocity are low, adsorption capacity is high. The adsorption isotherms of formaldehyde on modified activated carbon are well fitted by both Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The rate parameter for the pseudo-first-order model, pseudo-second-order model, and intraparticle diffusion model was compared. The correlation coefficient of pseudo-second-order kinetic model (0.999 > R 2  > 0.9548) is higher than the coefficient of pseudo-first-order kinetic model (0.5785 < R 2  < 0.8755) and intraparticle diffusion model (0.9752 < R 2  < 0.9898). Thus, pseudo-second-order kinetic model is more apposite to discuss the adsorption kinetic in this test, and the overall rate of the modified activated carbon adsorption process appears to be influenced by more than one step that is both the intraparticle diffusion model and membrane diffusion.

A TiO 2 /MWCNTs/Al 2 O 3 /NF (TiO 2 nanoparticles/multi-walled carbon nanotubes /Al 2 O 3 -modified nickel foams) composite filter was prepared through grown of MWCNTs upon Al 2 O 3 -modified nickel foams using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and then coated TiO 2 nanoparticles onto MWCNTs using dip-coating method. The MWCNTs forms a network-like structure on the surface layer of composite filter. The BET surface area of TiO 2 /MWCNTs/Al 2 O 3 /NF composite filter is more than 375 times higher than that of the pristine nickel foam. The degradation performance of oil particles was evaluated. Under optimized reaction conditions, 90% of the oleic acid on the filter was decomposed after 25 h. In addition, the effect of reaction temperature and light intensity were studied. Increased reaction temperature and light intensity were found to significantly improve the degradation rate and restrain the formation of refractory product. Furthermore, a parallel reaction kinetic model was adopted for degradation of oleic acid on the composite filter. The composite filter can reduces the accumulation of oil particles on the filter and the energy consumption of the filter. Possible transmission pathways of fungi in indoor swimming pool facilities were assessed through fungal counting in different areas of the facilities and typing of the collected fungal isolates. Air, water and surface samples were collected from seven different indoor swimming pool facilities. Fungal species were identified based on their internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. Maximum fungal concentrations of 6.2 CFU/cm 2 , 1.39 CFU/100 mL, and 202 CFU/m³ were found on surfaces, in water and air, respectively. In total, 458 isolates were obtained, belonging to 111 fungal species, of which 50 species were clinically relevant. Phialophora oxyspora (13.3%) and Trichosporon dohaense (5.0%) were the most frequently isolated species and were merely detected on floors, as were the dermatophytes, Trichophyton interdigitale and T. rubrum. Penicillium spp. and Aspergillus spp. were the dominant fungi in water and air. No typical patterns of fungal concentrations along the preferential pathways of pool visitors were observed, however, sites where pool visitors converge while moving from one room (e.g. dressing room) to another (e.g. shower room) and walking barefoot displayed the highest fungal concentrations thus posing the highest risk of contamination. The dispersal of fungi on floors is most likely facilitated by the pool visitors and cleaning tools. Clinically relevant fungi, including the ones rarely identified in nature, were widely detected on floors, in water and in air, as well as on cleaning tools and flexibeams. Preventive measures such as cleaning should minimize the prevalence of clinically relevant fungi in swimming pool facilities since these potentially pose health risks to those vulnerable for infections., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier GmbH.
