The electromagnetic eigenmodes of the Fermilab Recycler RF cavities were simulated with ACE3P running on NERSC's 'Perlmutter' supercomputer in an attempt to optimize their tuning range to comfortably support slip-stacking. A theory, based on coupled circuits and avoided crossings, was developed to explain the origins of the tuning range for tuner-cavity waveguide systems. This provided a logical, rigorous method to carry out this optimization, although engineering problems due to high voltages in the tuner and the operational $\mu$ range of the garnet had to be carefully implemented. It was shown that the desired goal of 10kHz of tuning was not attainable with the current cavity specifications. The maximum tuning range obtained was 5.59kHz for a single tuner with a coaxial line of length 63in. A double tuner cavity was also studied using the simulation software, although with little improvement in the tuning range. A promising technique to improve the tuning range involving the desynchronization of the garnets' magnetic permeabilities is proposed.

The ionization profile monitors (IPMs) are used to measure the beam size in synchrotrons. Both the Fermilab Recycler and Main Injector (MI) machines have IPMs. However, they were not well understood enough to provide confidence in their measurements. Accurately measuring beam size through the IPMs was crucial to recognize the loss mechanisms for accelerators and to keep the beam loss to a minimum. Thus, performing measurements with different parameters using the IPMs led to a better analysis on how changes in conditions affect the beam size. The IPM measurements are compared with that of multi-wires in the upstream transfer line after applying corrections. We present a simulation study to characterize the stability region of the Fermilab (FNAL) Recycler in the context of secondary emission yield (SEY). Interactions between electrons and beam pipe material can produce electron clouds that jeopardize beam stability in certain focusing configurations. Such an instability was documented in the Recycler, and the work presented here reflects improvements to better understand that finding. We incorporated the Furman-Pivi Model into a PyECLOUD analysis, and we determined the instability threshold given various bunch lengths, intensities, SEY magnitudes, and model parameters.

DUNE/LBNF constitutes an international multi-decadal physics program for leading-edge neutrino science and proton decay studies [1] and is expected to serve as the flagship particle experiment based at Fermilab.

The completion of the PIP-II project and its superconducting linear accelerator will provide up to 1.2 MW of beam power to the LBNF/DUNE facility for neutrino physics. It will also be able to produce high-power beams directly from the linac that can be used for lower-energy particle physics experiments as well, such as directing beam toward the Muon Campus at Fermilab for example. Any further significant upgrade of the beam power to DUNE, however, will be impeded by the limitations of the present Booster synchrotron at the facility. To increase the power to DUNE by a factor of two would require a new accelerator arrangement to feed the Main Injector that does not include the Booster. In what follows, a path toward upgrading the Fermilab accelerator complex to bring the beam power for DUNE to 2.4 MW is presented, using a new rapid-cycling synchrotron plus an energy upgrade to the PIP-II linac. The path includes the ability to instigate a new lower-energy, very high-power beam delivery system for experiments that can address much of the science program presented by the Booster Replacement Science Working Group. DG Tau A, a class-II young stellar object (YSO) displays both thermal, and non-thermal, radio emission associated with its bipolar jet. To investigate the nature of this emission, we present sensitive ($\sigma\sim2\,\mu {\rm Jy \,beam^{-1}}$), Karl G.\ Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) $6$ and $10\,{\rm GHz}$ observations. Over $3.81\,{\rm yr}$, no proper motion is observed towards the non-thermal radio knot C, previously thought to be a bowshock. Its quasi-static nature, spatially-resolved variability and offset from the central jet axis supports a scenario whereby it is instead a stationary shock driven into the surrounding medium by the jet. Towards the internal working surface, knot A, we derive an inclination-corrected, absolute velocity of $258\pm23\, {\rm km\,s^{-1}}$. DG Tau A's receding counterjet displays a spatially-resolved increase in flux density, indicating a variable mass loss event, the first time such an event has been observed in the counterjet. For this ejection, we measure an ionised mass loss rate of $(3.7\pm1.0) \times 10^{-8}\, {\rm M_\odot\, yr^{-1}}$ during the event. A contemporaneous ejection in the approaching jet isn't seen, showing it to be an asymmetric process. Finally, using radiative transfer modelling, we find that the extent of the radio emission can only be explained with the presence of shocks, and therefore reionisation, in the flow. Our modelling highlights the need to consider the relative angular size of optically thick, and thin, radio emission from a jet, to the synthesised beam, when deriving its physical conditions from its spectral index.

High average current, transportable energy recovery linacs (ERLs) can be very attractive tools for a number of applications including next generation high-luminosity, compact light sources. Conventional ERLs are based on an electron beam circulating through the same set of rf cavity cells. This leads to an accumulation of high-order modes inside the cavity cells, resulting in the development of a beam breakup (BBU) instability, unless the beam current is kept below the BBU start current. This limits the maximum current which can be transported through the ERL and hence the intensity of the photon beam generated. It has recently been proposed that splitting the accelerating and decelerating stages, tuning them separately and coupling them via a resonance coupler can increase the BBU start current. The paper presents the first experimental rf studies of a dual axis 7-cell asymmetric cavity and confirms the properties predicted by the theoretical model. The field structures of the symmetric and asymmetric modes are measured and good agreement with the numerical predictions is demonstrated. The operating mode field flatness was also measured and discussed. A novel approach based on the coupled mode (Fano-like) model has been developed for the description of the cavity Eigenmode spectrum and good agreement between analytical theory, numerical predictions and experimental data is shown. In order for sources of coherent high brightness and intensity THz and X-Ray radiation to be accepted by university or industrial R&D laboratories, truly compact, high current and efficient particle accelerators are required. The demand for compactness and efficiency can be satisfied by superconducting RF energy recovery linear accelerators (SRF ERL) allowing effectively minimising the footprint and maximising the efficiency of the system. However such set-ups are affected by regenerative beam-break up (BBU) instabilities which limit the beam current and may terminate the beam transport as well as energy recuperation. In this paper we suggest and discuss a SRF ERL with asymmetric configuration of resonantly coupled accelerating and decelerating cavities. In this type of SRF ERL an electron bunch is passing through accelerating and decelerating cavities once and, as we show in this case, the regenerative BBU instability can be minimised allowing high currents to be achieved. We study the BBU start current in such an asymmetric ERL via analytical and numerical models and discuss the properties of such a system.

The Accelerator Test Facility 2 (ATF2) is a scaled demonstrator system for final focus beam lines of linear high energy colliders. This paper describes the high resolution cavity beam position monitor (BPM) system, which is a part of the ATF2 diagnostics. Two types of cavity BPMs are used, C-band operating at 6.423 GHz, and S-band at 2.888 GHz with an increased beam aperture. The cavities, electronics, and digital processing are described. The resolution of the C-band system with attenuators was determined to be approximately 250 nm and 1 m for the S-band system. We examine how best to design qubits for use in topological quantum computation. These qubits are topological Hilbert spaces associated with small groups of anyons. Op- erations are performed on these by exchanging the anyons. One might argue that, in order to have as many simple single qubit operations as possible, the number of anyons per group should be maximized. However, we show that there is a maximal number of particles per qubit, namely 4, and more generally a maximal number of particles for qudits of dimension d. We also look at the possibility of having topological qubits for which one can perform two-qubit gates without leakage into non-computational states. It turns out that the requirement that all two-qubit gates are leakage free is very restrictive and this property can only be realized for two-qubit systems related to Ising-like anyon models, which do not allow for universal quantum computation by braiding. Our results follow directly from the representation theory of braid groups which means they are valid for all anyon models.
