1. Asthma is a risk factor for general fatigue of long COVID in Japanese nation-wide cohort study

Abstract

Background: Multiple prolonged symptoms are observed in patients who recover from an acute COVID-19 infection, which is defined as long COVID. General fatigue is frequently observed in patients with long COVID during acute and post-acute phases. This study aimed to identify the specific risk factors for general fatigue in long COVID. Methods: Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 aged over 18 years were enrolled in a multicenter cohort study at 26 medical institutions. Clinical data during hospitalization and patient-reported outcomes after discharge were collected from medical records, paper-based questionnaires, and smartphone apps. Results: Among prolonged symptoms through 1-year follow-ups, general fatigue was the most interfering symptom in daily life. Patients with protracted fatigue at all follow-up periods had lower quality of life scores at the 12-month follow-up. Univariate logistic regression analysis of the presence or absence of general fatigue at the 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month follow-ups identified asthma, younger age, and female sex as risk factors for prolonged fatigue. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that asthma was an independent risk factor for persistent fatigue during the 12-month follow-up period. Longitudinal changes in the symptoms of patients with or without asthma demonstrated that general fatigue, not cough and dyspnea, was significantly prolonged in patients with asthma. Conclusions: In a Japanese population with long COVID, prolonged general fatigue was closely linked to asthma. A preventive approach against COVID-19 is necessary to avoid sustained fatigue and minimize social and economic losses in patients with asthma.

2. New 'iPARKO' finger extensor facilitation training device for chronic hemiplegic hand after stroke: development and verification of its effectiveness in healthy individuals

Abstract

Abstract After stroke, hemiplegic individuals have difficulty opening their hands by themselves due to paralysis. A finger extensor facilitation technique was therefore developed to increase the activity of the extensor muscle in hemiplegic individuals who cannot open their paralyzed hands by themselves. In our previous study, we created a training device prototype called the “PARKO”, that imitates the finger extensor facilitation technique; however, the activity of the extensor muscle using the device was much smaller than that of the finger extensor facilitation technique. In this study, we developed a new finger extensor facilitation training device, the “iPARKO”, to increase the activity of the extensor muscle during active training. We thus improved the structure of the PARKO device—including a modified method to apply force to the fingertips—and attached force sensors to the device to monitor these forces. To verify the effectiveness of the iPARKO device, we conducted active training using the device in healthy individuals. Comparing the results of the muscle activities between the PARKO and iPARKO devices among three healthy participants demonstrated that the iPARKO device increased the mean activity of the extensor muscle by 43.8%. Furthermore, the activity of the extensor muscle in two healthy individuals while moving the hand forward with the iPARKO device was 84% and 96% of the maximal voluntary contraction during the hand-opening motion without the iPARKO device.

4. Impact of Antibody Cocktail Therapy Combined with Casirivimab and Imdevimab on Clinical Outcome for patients with COVID-19 in A Real-Life Setting: A Single Institute Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Background: Recent data from clinical trials suggest that antibody cocktail therapy, which combined casirivimab and imdevimab, is linked to the reduction of the risk of hospitalization or death among high-risk patients with COVID-19. However, it remains unclear how effective the therapy is in a real-life clinical practice. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients with COVID-19 with high-risk factors who underwent the antibody cocktail therapy, compared with those who were not given the cocktail therapy while being isolated in nonmedical facilities during the same period. Results: Data from 55 patients who received the antibody cocktail therapy and 53 patients with initial isolation in nonmedical facilities were analyzed. A total of 22 (41.5 %) of 53 patients staying in isolation facilities were eventually hospitalized and received medical interventions. By contrast, 13 (23.6 %) of 55 patients who received the antibody cocktail therapy subsequently underwent further medical interventions. In multivariate analysis, the antibody cocktail therapy significantly reduced the need for further medical interventions by 70 % compared with isolation (odds ratio=0.30, 95%CI [0.10-0.87], p=0.027). Patients with percutaneous oxygen saturation 96% or higher were significantly favoured for the therapy and had an advantage. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the antibody cocktail therapy is associated with reducing burden on hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

5. Development of a wristband-type wearable device for the colorimetric detection of ammonia emanating from the human skin surface

Abstract

Human skin gas is the term used to describe gas emanating from the human skin surface. Ammonia, one such gas, has a pungent odor affecting body odor. As ammonia’s dermal emission increases with physical load and/or psychological stress, the resulting body odor is called “fatigue odor.” Previously, human skin gases were collected via direct contact or headspace sampling, using a homemade sampling probe or bag and passive flux sampler. We developed a wristband-type wearable device for rapid, on-site detection of dermal ammonia based on headspace passive sampling coupled with Alizarin red as a pH indicator. Color change was measured with a colorimetric indicator tested in an exposure chamber and calibrated using dermal emission flux measured with a passive flux sampler. The indicator was developed as a tablet-like device comprising a polyethylene terephthalate body with a transparent window, detection sheet, diffuser, and disk with concentric spaces. The detection sheet was prepared by pipetting 50 μL 0.1 % Alizarin red–1 % glycerol into a methanol solution onto a cellulose filter paper and drying. The colorimetric indicator was placed on the skin surface using a wristband. For quantitative evaluation, the color-change amount was evaluated using color difference (ΔE*ab), which was calculated from L*, a*, and b* measured using a spectrophotometer. The colorimetric response to ammonia on the colorimetric indicator was evaluated by comparison with the conventional passive flux sampler. Good correlations were obtained between the color change amounts and those collected with the passive flux sampler. To simulate living human-skin conditions, the influence of temperature and humidity was also tested, and the effect on the passive indicator was clarified. Compared to conventional dermal ammonia-measuring methods, this newly developed passive indicator was more user-friendly because the results were obtained on-site without external evaluation. The passive indicator was also found to be an effective and simplified instrument for dermal ammonia measurements.

Abstract

The gap structure of a novel uranium-based superconductor UTe_{2}, situated in the vicinity of ferromagnetic quantum criticality, has been investigated via specific-heat C(T,H,Ω) measurements in various field orientations. Its angular Ω(ϕ,θ) variation shows a characteristic shoulder anomaly with a local minimum in H∥a at moderate fields rotated within the ab and ac planes. Based on theoretical calculations, these features can be attributed to the presence of point nodes in the superconducting gap along the a direction. Under the field orientation along the easy-magnetization a axis, an unusual temperature dependence of the upper critical field at low fields together with a convex downward curvature in C(H) were observed. These anomalous behaviors can be explained on the basis of a nonunitary triplet state model with equal-spin pairing whose T_{c} is tuned by the magnetization along the a axis. From these results, the gap symmetry of UTe_{2} is most likely described by a vector order parameter of d(k)=(b+ic)(k_{b}+ik_{c}).

8. Electronic Properties and de Haas-van Alphen effect of Cr3P with Noncentrosymmetric Tetragonal Structure.

Abstract

We succeeded in growing single crystals of an incongruent compound Cr3P with the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure by the Bridgman method using a sealed Mo crucible. The electronic specific heat coefficient γ is determined as 16 mJ=(K²·mol) from the specific heat measurement, which is mainly due to Cr-3d electrons. To clarify the Fermi surface properties, we carried out the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) experiment and detected several dHvA branches with the cyclotron effective masses of 1.1-3.6m0 (m0: rest mass of an electron). Each detected dHvA branch, which is well explained by the results of FLAPW energy band calculations, splits into two branches, reflecting the noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. 10. Superconducting and Fermi Surface Properties of a Valence Fluctuation Compound CeIr2.

Abstract

CeIr2 was reported as a valence fluctuation compound with a superconducting transition temperature of ~0.3 K. To investigate its electronic and superconducting properties, we measured the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect at low temperatures cooled to ~30mK and in high magnetic fields up to 36 T. The upper critical field (µ0Hc2 = 0.23 T) determined by the electrical resistivity under the magnetic field and the electron-phonon coupling constant (λep = 0.39) estimated from the Debye temperature suggested a weak-coupling BCStype superconductivity. The dHvA effect measurements mapped the Fermi surface in detail. The dHvA branches with the frequencies of F = 122-2180 T and the effective masses of m*c = 0:83{2:4m0 (m0: rest mass of an electron) were observed. These were reasonably explained by the band-structure calculation based on the full potential linearized augmented-plane-wave method within the local density approximation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To investigate the static and dynamic magnetic properties on the uranium-based superconductor UTe$_{2}$, we measured the NMR Knight shift $K$ and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ in $H \parallel a$ by $^{125}$Te-NMR on a $^{125}$Te-enriched single-crystal sample. $1/T_1T$ in $H \parallel a$ is much smaller than $1/T_1T$ in $H \parallel b$ and $c$, and magnetic fluctuations along each axis are derived from the $1/T_1T$ measured in $H$ parallel to all three crystalline axes. The magnetic fluctuations are almost identical at two Te sites and isotropic at high temperatures, but become anisotropic below 40 K, where heavy-fermion state is formed. The character of magnetic fluctuations in UTe$_2$ is discussed with the comparison to its static susceptibility and the results on other U-based superconductors. It is considered that the magnetic fluctuations probed with the NMR measurements are determined by the magnetic properties inside the two-leg ladder formed by U atoms, which are dominated by the $q_a$ = 0 ferromagnetic fluctuations., 10 pages, 6 figures

22. Magnetic and Fermi Surface Properties of Semimetals EuAs3 and Eu(As1-xPx)3.

Abstract

A Eu-divalent antiferromagnet EuAs3 exhibits six magnetic phases in the magnetic field vs temperature (H-T) phase diagram for the magnetic field along the monoclinic b+ (b)-axis. The existence of such multiple magnetic phases is rare among Eu compounds because the magnetism is governed by the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction and the corresponding localized 4 f-electrons only exhibit the spin angular momentum S. To clarify characteristics in these magnetic phases of EuAs3 and Eu(As1-xPx)3 (0.7 < x < 0.97), we measured the magnetization, magnetoresistance, and Hall resistivity using single-crystal samples. A large anomalous Hall resistivity was found in these magnetic phases, especially in Eu(As0.97P0.03)3. In addition, we carried out de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) experiments to clarify the Fermi surface properties of the semimetal EuAs3, and it was revealed that there are small and closed electron and hole Fermi surfaces with equal volumes. Abstract

28. New 'iPARKO' finger extensor facilitation training device for chronic hemiplegic hand after stroke: Development and verification of its effectiveness in healthy individuals

Abstract

After stroke, hemiplegic individuals have difficulty opening their hands by themselves due to paralysis. A finger extensor facilitation technique was therefore developed to increase the activity of the extensor muscle in hemiplegic individuals who cannot open their paralyzed hands by themselves. In our previous study, we created a training device prototype called the "PARKO", that imitates the finger extensor facilitation technique; however, the activity of the extensor muscle using the device was much smaller than that of the finger extensor facilitation technique. In this study, we developed a new finger extensor facilitation training device, the "iPARKO", to increase the activity of the extensor muscle during active training. We thus improved the structure of the PARKO device—including a modified method to apply force to the fingertips—and attached force sensors to the device to monitor these forces. To verify the effectiveness of the iPARKO device, we conducted active training using the device in healthy individuals. Comparing the results of the muscle activities between the PARKO and iPARKO devices among three healthy subjects demonstrated that the iPARKO device increased the mean activity of the extensor muscle by 43.8%, and decreased the mean activity of the flexor muscle by 33.7% when compared with the PARKO device. Additionally, when the iPARKO device was used to apply force to the fingertips, the fingertip forces and normalized values for maximum voluntary contraction of the extensor muscle were revealed in two healthy subjects. In conclusion, the iPARKO device improved the accuracy of imitating manual therapy compared with the PARKO device.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect in the novel spin-triplet superconductor UTe2 using high quality single crystals with the high residual resistivity ratio (RRR) over 200. The dHvA frequencies, named alpha and beta, are detected for the field directions between c and a-axes. The frequency of branch beta increases rapidly with the field angle tilted from c to a-axis, while branch alpha splits, owing to the maximal and minimal cross-sectional areas from the same Fermi surface. Both dHvA branches, alpha and beta reveal two kinds of cylindrical Fermi surfaces with a strong corrugation at least for branch alpha. The angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies is in very good agreement with that calculated by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) method taking into account the on-site Coulomb repulsion of U = 2 eV, indicating the main Fermi surfaces are experimentally detected. The detected cyclotron effective masses are large in the range from 32 to 57 m0 . They are approximately 10-20 times lager than the corresponding band masses, consistent with the mass enhancement obtained from the Sommerfeld coefficient and the calculated density of states at the Fermi level. The local density approximation (LDA) calculations of ThTe2 assuming U4+ with the 5f^2 localized model are in less agreement with our experimental results, in spite of the prediction for two cylindrical Fermi surfaces, suggesting a mixed valence states of U4+ and U3+ in UTe2., 7 pages, 8 figures, submitted to J. Abstract

Applying an external force to a person's hyperextended fingertip produces electrical activity in the extensor digitorum communis, even if the person does not try to open their hand. Based on this, a finger extensor facilitation technique conducted by therapists was developed. In this study, we developed a finger extensor facilitation training device named iPARKO that imitates this technique. We examined the relationship between the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint angle of the four fingers and the activities in the extensor digitorum communis resulting from active training using iPARKO. At the same time, the relationship between the MP joint angle and the reduced activities in the flexor digitorum superficialis was also examined. The experiments were conducted on five healthy subjects. It was found that as the MP joint approached its own maximum hyperextension position, the amount of activity of the extensor digitorum communis increased, and the amount of activity of the flexor digitorum superficialis decreased.

Abstract

This study investigates the spin susceptibility in U-based superconductor UTe$_2$ in the superconducting (SC) state by using Knight shift measurements for a magnetic field $H$ along the $a$ axis, which is the magnetic easy axis of UTe$_2$. Although a tiny anomaly ascribed to the SC diamagnetic effect was observed just below the SC transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$, the $a$-axis Knight shift in the SC state shows no significant decrease, following the extrapolation from the normal-state temperature dependence. This indicates that the spin susceptibility is nearly unchanged below $T_{\rm c}$. Considering the previous Knight shift results for $H \parallel b$ and $H \parallel c$, the dominant SC state is determined to be $B_{\rm 3u}$ in the spin-triplet pairing, which is consistent with the spin anisotropy in the normal state. Abstract

$^{125}$Te NMR experiments in field ($H$) applied along the easy magnetization axis (the $a$-axis) revealed slow electronic dynamics developing in the paramagnetic state of UTe$_2$. The observed slow fluctuations are concerned with a successive growth of long-range electronic correlations below 30$-$40 K, where the spin susceptibility along the hard magnetization axis (the $b$-axis) shows a broad maximum. The experiments also imply that tiny amounts of disorder or defects locally disturb the long-range electronic correlations and develop an inhomogeneous electronic state at low temperatures, leading to a low temperature upturn observed in the bulk-susceptibility in $H\|a$. We suggest that UTe$_2$ would be located on the paramagnetic side near an electronic phase boundary, where either magnetic or Fermi-surface instability would be the origin of the characteristic fluctuations., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in J. Abstract

Magnetic-field-angle-resolved specific heat and magnetization measurements were conducted on a ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe with remarkable anisotropic upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$. Although $H_{\rm c2}$ reaches a high magnetic field ($\sim 20$~T) along the $b$ axis, it is small ($\sim~0.6$~T) when a magnetic field is applied along the magnetic easy $c$-axis. This study indicates that the specific heat is abruptly suppressed when the magnetic field is applied toward the $c$ axis from the $a$ and $b$ axes in the ferromagnetic state. The field response of density of states (DOS) is anisotropic, relative to the $c$ axis, and its angle dependence is slightly singular. The Ising-type magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnetic state is dominant even in the anisotropic reinforced superconducting state. These facts indicate that the suppression of DOS may closely relate to the superconducting state. We theoretically analyze these findings together with URhGe and UTe$_2$ by highlighting the common and distinctive features among three compounds., Comment: This paper is accepted in Phys. Rev. B

Abstract

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a recently-emerged infectious disease that has caused millions of deaths, where comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms is still unestablished. In particular, studies of gene expression dynamics and regulation landscape in COVID-19 infected individuals are limited. Here, we report on a thorough analysis of whole blood RNA-seq data from 465 genotyped samples from the Japan COVID-19 Task Force, including 359 severe and 106 non-severe COVID-19 cases. We discover 1169 putative causal expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) including 34 possible colocalizations with biobank fine-mapping results of hematopoietic traits in a Japanese population, 1549 putative causal splice QTLs (sQTLs; e.g. two independent sQTLs at TOR1AIP1), as well as biologically interpretable trans-eQTL examples (e.g., REST and STING1), all fine-mapped at single variant resolution. We perform differential gene expression analysis to elucidate 198 genes with increased expression in severe COVID-19 cases and enriched for innate immune-related functions. Finally, we evaluate the limited but non-zero effect of COVID-19 phenotype on eQTL discovery, and highlight the presence of COVID-19 severity-interaction eQTLs (ieQTLs; e.g., CLEC4C and MYBL2). Abstract

OBJECTIVES Gas sampling tubes are essential tools for the evaluation of air quality in work environments. It adsorbs toxic gaseous matters onto the surface of various granular adsorbents, such as silica gel or activated carbon packed in a thin glass tube, for quantitative analysis by gas chromatography. Currently, most of the semi-volatile matters are evaluated via aerosol filtration or solid-phase gas adsorption depending on the main phase of the substances; however, only a few substances have a sampling protocol regarding both solid and gaseous phases. Therefore, semi-volatile components evaluated by the solid-phase adsorption may result in the underestimation of the component concentrations due to particulate components passing through and remaining in the adsorbent. To highlight issues on sampling of semi-volatile matters by the solid-phase adsorption method, the collection efficiency of aerosol particles by 17 commercial gas sampling tubes were measured via pressure drop. METHODS To measure the particle collection efficiency of the gas collection tubes, precise control and dilution of the aerosol particle monitors are essential. However, we cannot apply typical filter test methods at a lower filtration flow rate than that of the aerosol particles monitors. Therefore, we developed a new experimental method that considers flow adjustment between the aerosol monitors. By assuming two specific particle size distributions and five inlet conditions, the collection efficiencies of total mass particles are estimated. From the gas-particle partitioning ratio of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a coal tar pitch manufacturing industry, the underestimation of the concentration of semi-volatile matters using the gas collection tubes has been discussed. RESULTS The aerosol particles were collected in all kinds of layers in the gas sampling tubes, such as in the glass wool cap, gas adsorbent granular bed, and polyurethane foam. Furthermore, the collection efficiency curve of all 17 gas sampling tubes tested showed similar trends; a valley around particle sizes ranging from 0.2-0.3 μm between high collection zones below 0.1 μm and above 1 μm was observed. The observations suggested granular bed filters collection mechanisms such as inertial impaction, Brownian diffusion, gravity, and interception as same as air filters. CONCLUSIONS Solid-phase collection can underestimate the concentrations of multi-phase matters. Thus, we wish to highlight the importance of solid-phase collection methods along with filtration collection methods to collect all phases of semi-volatile matters.

Abstract

Metamagnetic transitions in the novel spin-triplet superconductor UTe$_2$ were investigated through the newly developed simultaneous measurements of magnetization and sample temperature for the field along the orthorhombic $b$-axis and close to the [011] direction, where reentrant superconductivity (RSC) is detected below and above the first-order metamagnetic transition field $H_{\rm m}$. Combining the Maxwell's relation and the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, we obtained the field dependence of Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma$ through the first-order metamagnetic transition. A significant enhancement of the effective mass toward $H_{\rm m}$ were detected for both field directions. On the other hand, above $H_{\rm m}$, the effective mass discontinuously decreases for $H~||~b$, while it discontinuously increases for $H~||~\sim [011]$, which seems to make a crucial role for the RSC., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, including supplemental material. 47. Impact of Antibody Cocktail Therapy Combined with Casirivimab and Imdevimab on Clinical Outcome for Covid-19 patients in A Real-Life Setting: A Single Institute Analysis

Abstract

BackgroundRecent data from clinical trial suggest that antibody cocktail therapy, a combination of the monoclonal antibodies casirivimab and imdevimab, has been shown to rapidly reduce the viral load and markedly decrease the risk of hospitalization or death among high-risk patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). However, it remains unclear how effective in a real-life clinical setting the therapy is.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed mild to moderate Covid-19 patients with one or more high-risk factors for severe disease who consecutively underwent the antibody cocktail therapy of the disease in our institute in June 2021 through early September 2021, compared to those with high-risk factors who were isolated in non-medical facilities consecutively during the same period, thereby being not given the antibody cocktail therapy there. The key outcome was the percentage of patients with Covid-19-related deterioration which needed additional medical interventions, such as oxygen support or other antiviral therapies.ResultsData from 55 patients with initially receiving antibody cocktail therapy and 53 patients with isolation into non-medical facilities are analyzed. 22 (41.5 %) of 53 patients with isolation facilities were finally hospitalized to receive medical interventions. On the other hand, 13 (23.6 %) of 55 patients with antibody cocktail therapy in our hospital subsequently underwent further medical interventions because of the progression. In multivariate analysis with variables of age, BMI, and high-risk factors, the antibody cocktail therapy significantly reduced 70 % in the need for further medical interventions compared to the initial isolation in the non-medical facilities (odds ratio=0.30, 95%CI [0.10-0.87], p=0.027). Furthermore, patients with 96% or above of SPO2 were significantly more favorable for the therapy than those with 95% or below of SPO2.ConclusionThe treatment of antibody cocktail was closely linked to reduction in the need for further medical interventions. The result indicates that the antibody cocktail therapy is associated with reducing the strain on hospitals, which is related to the improvement of medical management for public health care in Covid-19 pandemic era.

Abstract

We report the results of muon spin relaxation ($\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{SR}$) and $^{29}\mathrm{Si}$ NMR measurements carried out on the cubic chiral magnet EuPtSi. This compound exhibits a helimagnetic transition at ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}=4$ K, and hosts a unique skyrmion phase characterized by a short modulation period and strong anisotropy under magnetic fields. Our zero-field $\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{SR}$ experiments revealed the development of critical slowing down of Eu spin fluctuations over a relatively wide critical region $(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{\mathrm{N}})/{T}_{\mathrm{N}}l5$ above ${T}_{\mathrm{N}}$. We also found from $^{29}\mathrm{Si}$ NMR that the spin fluctuations are strongly suppressed by magnetic field in the paramagnetic state above 20 K. These characteristic spin dynamics observed over a wide region of temperature and magnetic field suggest the presence of magnetic frustration in the spin system. Such frustration would underlie the mechanism stabilizing the short-period skyrmion lattice observed in this compound.

Abstract

To elucidate the host genetic loci affecting severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection, or Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is an emerging issue in the face of the current devastating pandemic. Here, we report a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of COVID-19 in a Japanese population led by the Japan COVID-19 Task Force, as one of the initial discovery GWAS studies performed on a non-European population. Enrolling a total of 2,393 cases and 3,289 controls, we not only replicated previously reported COVID-19 risk variants (e.g., LZTFL1, FOXP4, ABO, and IFNAR2), but also found a variant on 5p35 (rs60200309-A at DOCK2) that was significantly associated with severe COVID-19 in younger (-8 (odds ratio = 2.01, 95% confidence interval = 1.58-2.55). This risk allele was prevalent in East Asians, including Japanese (minor allele frequency [MAF] = 0.097), but rarely found in Europeans. Cross-population Mendelian randomization analysis made a causal inference of a number of complex human traits on COVID-19. In particular, obesity had a significant impact on severe COVID-19. The presence of the population-specific risk allele underscores the need of non-European studies of COVID-19 host genetics.
