This study introduces a technique for determining surface orientations by projecting a monochrome, spatial pixel-encoded pattern and calculating the surface normals from single-shot measurement. Our method differs from traditional methods, such as shape from shading and shape from texture, in that it does not require relating the local surface orientations of adjacent points. We propose a multi-resolution system incorporating symbols varying in sizes from 8 × 8, 10 × 10, 12 × 12, 14 × 14, and 16 × 16 pixels. Compared to previous methods, we have achieved a denser reconstruction and obtained a 5.2 mm resolution using an 8 × 8 pattern at a depth of 110 cm. Unlike previous methods, which used local point orientations of grid intersection and multiple colors, we have used the monochrome pattern and deterministic centroid positions to compute the unit vector or direction vector between the neighboring symbols. The light plane intersections are used to calculate the tangent vectors on the surface. Surface normals are determined by the cross-product of two tangent vectors on the surface. A real experiment was conducted to measure simple plane surfaces, circular surfaces, and complex sculptures. The results show that the process of calculating surface normals is fast and reliable, and we have computed 1654 surface normals in 29.4 milliseconds for complex surfaces such as sculptures.

In this paper, an algorithm is proposed to solve the non-convex optimization problem using sequential convex programming. An approximation method was used to solve the collision avoidance constraint. An iterative approach was utilized to estimate the non-convex constraints, replacing them with their linear approximations. Through the simulation, we can see that this method allows for quadcopters to take off from a given initial position and fly to the desired final position within a specified flight time. It is guaranteed that the quadcopters will not collide with each other in different scenarios.

This paper presents a novel Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) design. CVT is highly beneficial for actuators with rotary output as it can improve the energy efficiency of the actuators by providing an optimum transmission ratio. This property of CVT is highly beneficial for fossil-fuel-based vehicles, electric vehicles, wind turbines, industrial robots, etc. With the exception of Spherical CVT and DH CVT, all known CVTs like push belt CVTs, toroidal CVTs, Milner CVTs, etc., require additional gear sets and clutches for direction reversal and neutral gear ratio. However, Spherical CVT and DH CVT have low torque capacity due to a single traction point constraint. Foregoing in view, a new CVT named CAD CVT has been developed. The paper presents the design conception, the operating principle, the transmission ratio, the torque capacity, frictional losses, and experimental verification of the basic functionality by manufacturing a Proof of Concept (PoC). The proposed CVT is the only CVT capable of independent direction reversal and high torque capacity as it can transmit torque through multiple traction points. The new CVT will significantly impact high-torque applications in different engineering applications, especially land transport consisting of heavy vehicles like trucks, buses, and trailers.

In this paper, a novel control architecture is proposed in which FMPC couples feedback from model predictive control with feedforward linearization. The proposed approach has the computational advantage of only requiring a convex quadratic program to be solved instead of a nonlinear program. Feedforward linearization aims to overcome the robustness issues of feedback linearization, which may be the result of parametric model uncertainty leading to inexact pole-zero cancellation. A DenseNet was trained to learn the inverse dynamics of the system, and it was used to adjust the desired path input for FMPC. Through experiments using quadcopter, we also demonstrated improved trajectory tracking performance compared to that of the PD, FMPC, and FMPC+DNN approaches. The root mean square (RMS) error was used to evaluate the performance of the above four methods. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective.

In this research, we combined two distinct, structured light methods, the single-shot pseudo-random sequence-based approach and the time-multiplexing stripe indexing method. As a result, the measurement resolution of the single-shot, spatially encoded, pseudo-random sequence-based method improved significantly. Since the time-multiplexed stripe-indexed-based techniques have a higher measurement resolution, we used varying stripes to enhance the measurement resolution of the pseudo-random sequence-based approaches. We suggested a multi-resolution 3D measurement system that consisted of horizontal and vertical stripes with pixel sizes ranging from 8 × 8 to 16 × 16. We used robust pseudo-random sequences (M-arrays) to controllably distribute various stripes in a pattern. Since single-shape primitive characters only contribute one feature point to the projection pattern, we used multiple stripes instead of single-shape primitive symbols. However, numerous stripes will contribute multiple feature points. The single character-based design transforms into an increased featured size pattern when several stripes are employed. Hence, the projection pattern contains a much higher number of feature points. So, we obtained a high-resolution measurement. Each stripe in the captured image is located using adaptive grid adjustment and stripe indexing techniques. The triangulation principle is used to measure 3D.

In this study, the dynamics of tether cables (TCs) that connect a surface ship and a walking robotic vehicle on the seabed are numerically investigated. The main aim of this study is to develop a reliable prediction model for the dynamic behavior of TCs attached to a seabed walking robot. This system consists of a surface ship, underwater manned seabed walking robot (UMSWR), TC, and winch. The study is comprised of mathematical modeling and numerical simulations of the developed governing equations for the TC dynamics. A relatively simple and efficient mathematical analysis method is proposed to determine the configuration and forces on the TC under a steady state. The problem is solved using the quasi-static technique and lumped mass parameters for discretizing and modeling the dynamics of the TC. Based on the static analysis of the Morrison equation and finite segment method, analytical formulas of the steady-state equation of TC were obtained and solved. The effects of variable water density and variable underwater currents are included in the cable behavior. Consequently, the two-dimensional TC profile and axial tension were estimated in a steady-state configuration. The developed equations were simulated in MATLAB software. Several numerical simulation examples were worked out, demonstrating the accurate performance of the method. Various input parameters of the system and their relationships with the output values were investigated, thereby demonstrating the versatility of the method.

This paper presents the design optimization of composite submersible cylindrical pressure hull subjected to 3 MPa hydrostatic pressure. The design optimization study is conducted for cross-ply layups [0s/90t/0u], [0s/90t/0u]s, [0s/90t]s and [90s/0t]s considering three uni-directional composites, i.e. Carbon/Epoxy, Glass/Epoxy, and Boron/Epoxy. The optimization study is performed by coupling a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm (MOGA) and Analytical Analysis. Minimizing the buoyancy factor and maximizing the buckling load factor are considered as the objectives of the optimization study. The objectives of the optimization are achieved under constraints on the Tsai-Wu, Tsai-Hill and Maximum Stress composite failure criteria and on buckling load factor. To verify the optimization approach, optimization of one particular layup configuration is also conducted in ANSYS with the same objectives and constraints.

The Structure Light System (SLS) is a general concept and it is one of the cheapest methods for the non-contact-based 3D reconstruction. The existing single-shot SLS which is primarily based on the spatial encoding techniques are not optimal in terms of resolution and digitally encoded patterns. Those schemes are not flexible, controllable, and designed up to the level of the pixel. So, to increase the resolution and to implement a flexible controllable pattern we proposed a novel heuristic method based on the spatial neighborhood. In this paper, we propose a multi-resolution SLS which can be implemented with a set of 25 geometrical shaped distinct symbols or alphabets to use in the projection pattern as shape primitive. The size of each symbol is well defined in pixels which enabled us to have access and control up to the full resolution of the projector. The shape descriptive parameters for each symbol or alphabet are also defined and computed. To spread the alphabets in a controllable manner, a method is defined to generate a robust pseudo-random sequence of any required size with a certain number of alphanumeric bases, to be employed in the projection pattern concerning the measured resolution. This arrangement will enable us to design the projection patterns according to the required surface area and the resolution. A new technique is developed for the decoding of the captured image pattern. The decoding process depends upon the classification of symbols which is based on shape descriptive parameters. The searching in the neighborhood of a symbol is carried out through computing the location information, grid distance, and direction information to find the codewords which are used to establish the correspondence.

Abstract There is a great interest to use carbon-based material like graphene and graphene oxide in biomedical applications due to its flexibility to be functionalized with bio-active molecules. Herein, graphene and graphene-based nanocomposites were biosynthesized by liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite using aqueous extract of Parthenium hysterophorous (P-H) as a surfactant. A set of five thin film samples of graphene was prepared from graphene suspension by vacuum filtration method. Samples were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, and XRD, which revealed successful synthesis of graphene. Graphene/P-H(G/P-H) nanocomposites comprising varied ratios of graphene and P-H were prepared and their antibacterial activity was investigated by agar well diffusion method. The experimental results indicated that G/P-H nanocomposite have higher antibacterial activity than graphene alone, and bioactivity of G/P-H nanocomposite was found to be controlled by the fraction of graphene in the composite.

Background: Paragonimus, is a globally distributed trematode, with human disease limited to endemic regions. It can be transmitted to humans through ingestion of intermediate hosts that are crustaceans. Most symptomatic infections consist of pulmonary disease, and in aberrant migration of immature flukes, extrapulmonary manifestations may occur. These presentations are relatively uncommon and may affect various organs with atypical Clinico-radiological pathologies that are often challenging to diagnose. Pericardial involvement has scarcely been reported before. Furthermore, the management, clinical outcomes and potential complications of this involvement remain unclear. Case report: Our patient is a 31-year-old Nepalese male who presented with abdominal distension and lower limb oedema. Initial work up revealed pericardial effusion, and analysis was suggestive of exudative lymphocytic effusion. Supported by positive QuantiFERON result along with his demographic data, the patient was treated presumptively as a case of tuberculous pericarditis, despite the negative initial Mycobacterial Tuberculosis work up. During follow up, the patient lacked clinical response and repeated echocardiography showed signs of tamponade with concomitant pleural effusion. subsequently video-assisted-thoracoscopy pericardial window along with pericardial and pleural biopsy were performed. Histopathological examination of the biopsied tissue revealed non-necrotizing granulomas containing a parasitic egg suggestive of Paragonimus. Fortunately, the patient received treatment with praziquantel and subsequently made good clinical recovery. Conclusion: Diagnosis of extrapulmonary Paragonimus infection can be challenging given its rarity and clinical picture mimicking other infectious aetiologies. Pericardial involvement is seldom reported in the literature and clinical suspicion should be raised particularly when dealing with atypical presentations and relevant demographic data.

Unprecedented self-assembled hierarchical nano-sheets of SnS were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. In a typical reaction, SnCl2.2H2O and Na2S.9H2O were used as reactants. Structural and morphological properties were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while the electrochemical properties were measured by cyclic voltammetry, charge-discharge cycles, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). SEM results showed the 1-D SnS nano-sheets with an average thickness of around 20 nm. Cyclic voltammogram and charge-discharge spectra showed good cycling stability. All these results showed that SnS nano-sheets are promising candidate material to be used as electrode for Li-S batteries.

Protective coatings for harsh environments are always welcome, but they must overcome profound challenges, including corrosion and wear resistance. The purpose of this study is to look into the long-term potentiodynamic polarization measurements and dry tribometric behavior of plasma-sprayed amorphous coatings on AISI 1035 mild steel. To investigate the impact of unique active polarization potentials on the electrochemical studies of the iron-based amorphous layer, which compares favorably to AISI 1035 mild steel, the active potential polarization curve and friction coefficient tests were performed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analyses were used to investigate the coating’s corrosion behavior. Their mechanical (Tribometric tests at higher sliding speeds) and chemical properties (electrochemical potentiodynamic polarization investigations) have also been thoroughly investigated. There is enough validation that these protective coatings can be used in hostile environments. The effects of long-term corrosion for 24 and 48 h were thoroughly examined. Tribometric examinations revealed that amorphous layers are highly resistant under dry conditions, as they offered a very low and stable friction coefficient less than 4 μ with micro Vickers hardness 1140 ± 22.14 HV, which is more than twice as compared to mild steel AISI 1035. The corrosion resistance of coatings in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution displays active transition characteristics of activation, passivation, over passivation, and pitting, as shown by the potentiodynamic polarization curves.

Wireless charging has become an emerging challenge to reduce the cost of a conventional plug-in charging system in electric vehicles especially for supercapacitors that are utilized for quick charging and low-energy demands. In this article, the design of an efficient wireless power transfer system has been presented using resonant inductive coupling technique for supercapacitor-based electric vehicle. Mathematical analysis, simulation, and experimental implementation of the proposed charging system have been carried out. Simulations of various parts of the systems are carried out in two different software, ANSYS MAXWELL and MATLAB. ANSYS MAXWELL has been used to calculate the various parameters for the transmitter and receiver coils such as self-inductance ( L ), mutual inductance ( M ), coupling coefficient ( K ), and magnetic flux magnitude ( B ). MATLAB has been utilized to calculate output power and efficiency of the proposed system using the mathematical relationships of these parameters. The experimental setup is made with supercapacitor banks, electric vehicle, wattmeters, controller, and frequency generator to verify the simulation results. The results show that the proposed technique has better power transfer efficiency of more than 75% and higher power transfer density using a smaller coil size with a bigger gap of 4–24 cm.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a global public health problem of epidemic proportions, with 60-70% of affected individuals suffering from associated neurovascular complications that act on multiple organ systems. The most common and clinically significant neuropathies of T2DM include uremic neuropathy, peripheral neuropathy, and cardiac autonomic neuropathy. These conditions seriously impact an individual’s quality of life and significantly increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. Although advances in gene sequencing technologies have identified several genetic variants that may regulate the development and progression of T2DM, little is known about whether or not and how these genetic variants are associated with diabetic neuropathy. Significant missing heritability data and complex disease etiologies remain to be explained. This article is the first to provide a review of the genetic risk variants implicated in the diabetic neuropathies, to highlight potential commonalities. We thereby aim to contribute to the creation of a genetic-metabolic model that will help elucidate the cause of diabetic neuropathies, evaluate a patient’s risk profile, and ultimately facilitate preventative and targeted treatment for the individual.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the child and adolescent population. It affects attention span and impairment in concentration, which can impact performance of athletes. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment within the athletic population is a unique challenge. The research in this field has been relatively limited. The national collegiate athletic association (NCAA) and International Olympic Committee have regulations for the use of psychostimulants for treatment due to its performance enhancing effects. In this article authors have discussed the screening methods, pharmacological treatment, side effects and behavioral approaches for the treatment of ADHD in adolescent athletes

Abstract Background Protein biomarker studies are currently hampered by a lack of measurement standards to demonstrate quality, reliability and comparability across multiple assay platforms. This is especially pertinent for immunoassays where multiple formats for detecting target analytes are commonly used. Findings In this pilot study a generic panel of six non-human protein standards (50 - 10^7 pg/mL) of varying abundance was prepared as a quality control (QC) material. Simulated "normal" and "diseased" panels of proteins were prepared in pooled human plasma and incorporated into immunoassays using the Meso Scale Discovery® (MSD®) platform to illustrate reliable detection of the component proteins. The protein panel was also evaluated as a spike-in material for a model immunoassay involving detection of ovarian cancer biomarkers within individual human plasma samples. Our selected platform could discriminate between two panels of the proteins exhibiting small differences in abundance. Across distinct experiments, all component proteins exhibited reproducible signal outputs in pooled human plasma. When individual donor samples were used, half the proteins produced signals independent of matrix effects. These proteins may serve as a generic indicator of platform reliability. Each of the remaining proteins exhibit differential signals across the distinct samples, indicative of sample matrix effects, with the three proteins following the same trend. This subset of proteins may be useful for characterising the degree of matrix effects associated with the sample which may impact on the reliability of quantifying target diagnostic biomarkers. Conclusions We have demonstrated the potential utility of this panel of standards to act as a generic QC tool for evaluating the reproducibility of the platform for protein biomarker detection independent of serum matrix effects.

In this article we explore the United Kingdom context of apprenticeships and the history of development of the use of the term apprentice in medicine. We describe the development of the Medical Doctor Degree Apprenticeship (MDDA) in England and how Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has approached the development of the MDDA. We explore the rationale for developing the MDDA in Essex, the structure of the apprenticeship at ARU (which comprises 20% of employed time in NHS work and 80% in education undertaking the medical degree), the challenges and issues we encountered and mitigations we put in place. We describe the importance of stakeholder engagement (especially with direct entry medical students, medical professionals, and members of the university staff). The role of the employer is critical to the development and delivery of MDDA. The important role of regulators in developing and monitoring MDDA is the complexity of funding arrangements. Finally, we offer reflections on the development journey thus far.

Background: Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) has a multifactorial etiology. Vitamin E and vitamin D play an important role in lung development and can potentially be beneficial in the prevention of BPD., Objective: The study aimed to compare the risk of BPD occurrence in preterm neonates supplemented with vitamin D or E versus those who did not get supplementation., Methods: The literature search was conducted for this systematic review by searching the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to December 2022. Randomized controlled trials involved administering vitamin D or E to preterm neonates and examining the occurrence of BPD. We excluded non-English articles, and articles with non-relevant and insufficient data. We used the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist to assess the quality of the included studies. We used Egger's test to evaluate the risk of bias among the included studies. Heterogeneity was also assessed through Q-test and I2. We applied the random effect model for analysis. A P-value less than 0.05 was considered as significant. All the statistical analysis in the current study was performed using STATA 14. The Relative Risk (RR) was calculated as the effect size with 95% Confidence Interval (CI)., Results: Three eligible studies seeking the role of vitamin D in the prevention of BPD were analysed. Meta-analysis revealed that receiving vitamin D supplementation can significantly reduce the risk of BPD in preterm infants (RR = 0.357, 95% CI: 0.189-0.675, I2 = 0.0%; p = 0.002). Similarly, for assessing the role of Vitamin E in the prevention of BPD, three eligible studies were analysed. Vitamin E supplementation was not found to play a significant role in the reduction of BPD (RR = 0.659, 95%CI = 0.243-1.786, I2 = 38.7%; p = 0.412)., Conclusion: Vitamin D supplementation could be beneficial in preventing BPD in preterm infants. Clear cell meningioma (CCM) is an uncommon histologic subtype of meningioma classified as a WHO grade II tumor and accounting for less than 1% of all meningiomas. Demographically, younger patients are commonly affected without any remarkable gender preference. Moreover, CCM shows a unique anatomical site of involvement. It tends to occur in the cranium than the spine, whereas the basilar skull, posterior fossa and lumbar spine have been the most frequently affected area. Although most cases present as typical the mass effect by the tumor, CCM exhibits characteristic imaging and histologic patterns. Even though surgical resection is the treatment of choice, recurrence-free survival is the biggest challenge and has been attempting to improve by adjuvant therapy. There is still debate about its management, outcome and factors defining it. Herein, we aimed to summarize natural history, radiographic characteristics, histological features, treatment strategies to guide the best possible individualized care for the most favorable outcome.

Despite the advances in diagnosis and management of breast cancer, metastasis has been responsible for the staggering percentage of breast cancer-related death. Mortality threat can be explained mostly by the lack of proper understanding of the diversity of pathological features and underlying mechanism of breast cancer metastasis and effective targeted therapy. Breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) are the potential source of tumor cells spread to distant organs. BCSCs targeted therapy can suppress the breast cancer progression to metastasis. Spreading of tumor cells to the bone, lung, liver, and brain occurs through a distinct non-random process; called metastasis organotropism. Recently, brain metastasis in breast cancer patients has been detected more frequently, causing a significant clinical burden. BRCA1 and BRCA2 associated breast cancers carry a remarkably higher propensity of CNS metastasis. BRCA1 and BRCA2 associated breast cancers commonly have the propensity to be the triple-negative (TN) and hormone receptors (HR)-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative molecular subtypes, respectively. Regardless of molecular subtypes, metastasis is most commonly evident at the bone. Heterogeneity is a critical pathological feature, leads to therapeutic resistance. BCSCs, biomarkers expression patterns, and mutations contribute to heterogeneity. In this paper, we discuss crucial pathological features of breast cancer metastasis, emphasizing metastasis organotropism and heterogeneity; and mechanisms of breast cancer metastasis, highlighting the pathways of metastasis to the brain. We consider that this paper reinforces future research areas and benefits the general readers, physicians, and researchers to identify potential areas to develop targeted therapies.

Introduction: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) induce impressive antitumor responses but may lead to acute kidney injury (AKI) associated with ICI therapy (AKI-ICI). Biomarkers distinguishing AKI-ICI from AKI because of other causes (AKI-other) are currently lacking. Because ICIs block immunoregulatory pathways, we hypothesized that biomarkers related to immune cell dysregulation, including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and other markers of B and T cell activation in the systemic circulation and kidney tissue, may aid with the diagnosis of AKI-ICI., Methods: This is a prospective study consisting of 24 participants who presented with AKI during ICI therapy, adjudicated to either have AKI-ICI ( n  = 14) or AKI-other ( n  = 10). We compared markers of kidney inflammation and injury (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, kidney injury molecule-1) as well as plasma and urine levels of T cell-associated cytokines (TNF-α, interferon-γ, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-9, and IL-10) between groups. We also compared T-cell responses in the systemic circulation and in kidney tissue across groups, using mass cytometry systems., Results: We observed increase in several specific immune cells, including CD4 memory, T helper cells, and dendritic cells in the kidney tissue, as well as in the urine cytokines IL-2, IL-10, and TNF-α, in patients who developed AKI-ICI compared to patients with AKI-other ( P  < 0.05 for all). The discriminatory ability of TNF-α on AKI cause was strong (area under the curve = 0.814, 95% confidence interval: 0.623-1.00. The CD4+ T cells with memory phenotype formed the dominant subset., Conclusion: These results suggest that specific T-cell responses and their respective cytokines may be indicative of AKI associated with ICI therapy and may help to differentiate AKI-ICI from AKI-other. Since the last century, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia has become a major global and public health concern not only in terms of morbidity and mortality but also the duration of hospital stay, healthcare cost, and antimicrobial choices. Especially alarming is the growing antimicrobial resistance due to their misuse and overuse, which has led the world to be exhausted of its effective antibiotic resources. In this review article, we sought to figure out the most efficacious antimicrobial agents to treat MRSA-related bloodstream infections. We compared the data from reviewing reports from 2017 to 2022 and summarized their comparative efficacy and cost-effectiveness. Although we focused on vancomycin and daptomycin, which are the current Infectious Disease Society Of America (IDSA)-recommended antibiotics for MRSA bacteremia treatment, a deep dive into the newer agents revealed better efficacy and treatment outcome in the combination of ceftaroline (β-lactam) with daptomycin compared to traditional standard monotherapy (vancomycin/daptomycin monotherapy). Also, the IDSA recommended high-dose daptomycin (8-10 mg/kg) therapy for MRSA bacteremia treatment to be more effective in cases with vancomycin-reduced susceptibility. Moreover, we did not find any trial or study describing the use of ceftaroline as a monotherapy to compare its efficacy in MRSA bacteremia with the current standard therapy. The complement system, as a vital part of innate immunity, has an important role in the clearance of pathogens; however, unregulated activation of this system probably has a key role in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury, which is induced by highly pathogenic viruses (i.e. influenza A viruses and severe acute respiratory syndrome [SARS] coronavirus). The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which is the causal agent for the ongoing global pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), has recently been spread to almost all countries around the world. Although most people are immunocompetent to SARS-CoV-2, a small group develops hyper-inflammation that leads to complications like acute respiratory distress syndrome, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and multi-organ failure. After the emergence of the novel 2019 coronavirus disease in P. R. China, this highly contagious disease has been currently spread out to almost all countries, worldwide. Novel 2019 coronavirus disease, Middle East respiratory syndrome, and severe acute respiratory syndrome are reported to cause a higher risk for severe infections in patients with chronic comorbidities, such as hypertension and diabetes. These severe infections can contribute to higher rates of morbidity and mortality in these patients. Around the end of December 2019, a new beta-coronavirus from Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China began to spread rapidly. The new virus, called SARS-CoV-2, which could be transmitted through respiratory droplets, had a range of mild to severe symptoms, from simple cold in some cases to death in others. The disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 was named COVID-19 by WHO and has so far killed more people than SARS and MERS. Following the widespread global outbreak of COVID-19, with more than 132758 confirmed cases and 4955 deaths worldwide, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic disease in January 2020. Earlier studies on viral pneumonia epidemics has shown that pregnant women are at greater risk than others. During pregnancy, the pregnant woman is more prone to infectious diseases. Research on both SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, which are pathologically similar to SARS-CoV-2, has shown that being infected with these viruses during pregnancy increases the risk of maternal death, stillbirth, intrauterine growth retardation and, preterm delivery. With the exponential increase in cases of COVID-19 throughout the world, there is a need to understand the effects of SARS-CoV-2 on the health of pregnant women, through extrapolation of earlier studies that have been conducted on pregnant women infected with SARS-CoV, and MERS-CoV. There is an urgent need to understand the chance of vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from mother to fetus and the possibility of the virus crossing the placental barrier.
