Abstract

The control and state estimation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) provide significant challenges due to their complex and nonlinear dynamics, as well as uncertainties arising from factors such as sensor noise, wind gusts, and parameter fluctuations. Neural network-based methods tackle these problems by accurately approximating unknown nonlinearities through training on input-output data. This paper proposes an adaptive Multi-layer Neural Network (MLNN) Luenberger observer-based control for altitude and attitude tracking of a quadrotor UAV. The MLNN observer, employing a modified back-propagation algorithm, is used for the quadrotor’s state estimation. The adaptive nature of the proposed observer helps mitigate the effects of parameters such as wind gusts, measurement noise, and parameter variations. Subsequently, a sliding mode controller is designed based on the observed states to track the reference trajectories. Lyapunov stability is ensured by using the modified back-propagation weight update rule for the proposed MLNN observer. Simulation results demonstrate superior tracking performance of the proposed observer compared to the Sliding Mode Observer (SMO) and a Single Hidden Layer Neural Network (SHLNN) observer, even in the presence of the aforementioned parameters.

Abstract

Objectives Paediatric cancer is a leading cause of death for children. Children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) were four times more likely to die than children in high-income countries (HICs). This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic had affected the delivery of healthcare services worldwide, and exacerbated the disparity in paediatric cancer outcomes between LMICs and HICs.Design A multicentre, international, collaborative cohort study.Setting 91 hospitals and cancer centres in 39 countries providing cancer treatment to paediatric patients between March and December 2020.Participants Patients were included if they were under the age of 18 years, and newly diagnosed with or undergoing active cancer treatment for Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, Wilms’ tumour, sarcoma, retinoblastoma, gliomas, medulloblastomas or neuroblastomas, in keeping with the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer.Main outcome measure All-cause mortality at 30 days and 90 days.Results 1660 patients were recruited. 219 children had changes to their treatment due to the pandemic. Patients in LMICs were primarily affected (n=182/219, 83.1%). 7. An improved sliding mode control–based GMPPT algorithm for photovoltaic system

Abstract

In this paper, an improved fixed-frequency-based integral sliding mode controller is designed and applied to a stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) system to obtain the desired reference signal for the maximum power point tracking. The proposed technique is designed with the modified sliding surface and sigmoidal function-based control law which improves the transient and steady-state performance of the PV system under uniform and partial shading conditions. Moreover, the cost of the proposed technique is further reduced by predicting the inductor current without employing a current sensor. In addition, the varying tuning factor strategy is used to further reduce the undershoot and overshoot issues during the tracking process. The desired voltage reference signal is provided by the online fractional open-circuit voltage algorithm. Furthermore, the proposed sliding mode control technique is integrated with the 0.8 Voc model-based algorithm to obtain the global maximum power point. To check the effectiveness and fair analysis, the proposed technique is tested in MATLAB/Simulink environment under partial shading conditions, and its results are compared with the recently developed double integral derivative sliding mode control technique. The suggested technique is also tested experimentally on a 245 W PV module, in conjunction with a boost converter. The simulation and experimental findings reveal that the proposed technique outperforms the double integral derivative sliding mode control technique in terms of steady-state and transient performance, tracking speed, and transient efficiency.

Abstract

Background: Many countries are experiencing outbreaks of the second wave of COVID-19 infection. With these outbreaks, the severity of the disease is still ambiguously projected. Certain inflammatory markers are known to be associated with the severity of the disease and regular monitoring of these biomarkers in intensive care unit admissions is paramount to improve clinical outcomes.Objectives: This study was aimed to compare the severity markers of the patients infected during the first wave versus the second wave in an intensive care unit.Methods: We conducted a retrospective study obtaining patient’s data from hospital records, admitted during the first wave in March-May 2020, and compared the data with those COVID-19 patients admitted during the second wave from October–November 2020. A descriptive comparison was done among the patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) during both waves of the pandemic.Results: 92 patients from first wave and 68 patients from second wave were included in the analysis, all admitted to ICU with equal gender distribution. Increased age and length of ICU stay was observed during the first wave. BMI, in-hospital mortality and invasive ventilation were statistically indifferent between both the waves. There was significantly higher APACHE-II during first wave (p = 0.007), but SOFA at day 1 (p = 0.213) and day 7 of ICU stay remain indifferent (p = 0.119). Inflammatory markers were less severe during second wave while only neutrophils and lymphocytes were found to peak higher.Conclusion: Most of the severity markers were less intense during the early analysis of second wave.

Abstract

The proposed paper provides a detailed, critical and comprehensive review of the widely used and recently developed global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT) algorithms for photovoltaic (PV) systems. For the ease of comparison, the algorithms are categorized into four major groups, (1) optimization algorithms, (2) hybrid techniques of two different optimization algorithms, (3) hybrid techniques of optimization algorithm with the conventional algorithm, and (4) other GMPPT algorithms. A comprehensive table is also presented at the end of the discussion of each category to evaluate the performance of GMPPT algorithms in the context of algorithm complexity, converter’s type, tracking speed, efficiency, sensor types and quantities, and partial shading detection scheme. The analysis in the proposed paper will help the designers to select the appropriate GMPPT algorithm for their photovoltaic system.

Abstract

The suggested paper presents a new method for the estimation of short circuit current ( I sc ) and open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of the photovoltaic (PV) system. Moreover, a modified relation of reverse saturation current ( I s ) is used to prevent the wrong estimation of I sc and V oc values at any point of the P-V curve. In addition, a new current-sensorless method of PV current estimation is used to further reduce the cost of the proposed technique. The accuracy of the proposed method is checked by testing on three different PV panels such as Yingli 245C-30b, Sharp NT-180U1, and Risen SYP-110S. Moreover, the fractional short circuit current (FSSC) and fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV) algorithms are also implemented using the proposed and conventional analytical method and their results are compared with each other. The proposed method is validated in the Matlab/Simulink and hardware experimentation. The results of the proposed method indicate the following advantages: (1) accurate prediction of the I sc and V oc values at any point of the P-V curve, (2) interruption free output power during the I sc and V oc measurement, (3) accurate sensorless estimation of PV current, 4) no overshoot and undershoot in the tracked power of PV module, and 5) significant improvement in tracking efficiency by 38.33% for the FSSC algorithm and 28.2% for the FOCV algorithm, compared to the conventional analytical method.

Abstract

ObjectivesPaediatric cancer is a leading cause of death for children. Children in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) were four times more likely to die than children in high-income countries (HICs). This study aimed to test the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic had affected the delivery of healthcare services worldwide, and exacerbated the disparity in paediatric cancer outcomes between LMICs and HICs.DesignA multicentre, international, collaborative cohort study.Setting91 hospitals and cancer centres in 39 countries providing cancer treatment to paediatric patients between March and December 2020.ParticipantsPatients were included if they were under the age of 18 years, and newly diagnosed with or undergoing active cancer treatment for Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, Wilms’ tumour, sarcoma, retinoblastoma, gliomas, medulloblastomas or neuroblastomas, in keeping with the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer.Main outcome measureAll-cause mortality at 30 days and 90 days.Results1660 patients were recruited. 219 children had changes to their treatment due to the pandemic. Patients in LMICs were primarily affected (n=182/219, 83.1%). Relative to patients with paediatric cancer in HICs, patients with paediatric cancer in LMICs had 12.1 (95% CI 2.93 to 50.3) and 7.9 (95% CI 3.2 to 19.7) times the odds of death at 30 days and 90 days, respectively, after presentation during the COVID-19 pandemic (pConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic has affected paediatric oncology service provision. It has disproportionately affected patients in LMICs, highlighting and compounding existing disparities in healthcare systems globally that need addressing urgently. However, many patients with paediatric cancer continued to receive their normal standard of care. This speaks to the adaptability and resilience of healthcare systems and healthcare workers globally.

Abstract

An efficient maximum power point tracking technique is developed, which realises the fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV) algorithm through a unique on-line procedure. The proposed method continuously estimates the open-circuit voltage by measuring instantaneous voltage, current, and temperature of the photovoltaic module without disconnecting the power flow to the load. Simultaneously, the open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) value can be measured at any operating point of the I–V curve and does not require any perturbation to the specific point. Three methods i.e. proposed algorithm, analytical FOCV, and conventional offline FOCV are modelled in Matlab/Simulink environment and also the numerical computations are carried out. Finally, the proposed FOCV and the conventional offline FOCV are tested through the experimental setup. The comparative analysis indicates the following advantages: (i) interruption-free output power; (ii) accurate measurement of V oc under any weather condition, especially variable temperature condition; and (iii) continuous measurement and tracking of maximum power point (MPP). Owing to the aforementioned advantages, the proposed method exhibits better MPP tracking and superior dynamic plus steady-state efficiencies as compared to the analytical FOCV and conventional offline FOCV methods.

Abstract

IntroductionChildhood cancer is a leading cause of death. It is unclear whether the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted childhood cancer mortality. In this study, we aimed to establish all-cause mortality rates for childhood cancers during the COVID-19 pandemic and determine the factors associated with mortality.MethodsProspective cohort study in 109 institutions in 41 countries. Inclusion criteria: children ResultsAll-cause mortality was 3.4% (n=71/2084) at 30-day follow-up, 5.7% (n=113/1969) at 90-day follow-up and 13.0% (n=206/1581) at 12-month follow-up. The median time from diagnosis to multidisciplinary team (MDT) plan was longest in low-income countries (7 days, IQR 3–11). Multivariable analysis revealed several factors associated with 12-month mortality, including low-income (OR 6.99 (95% CI 2.49 to 19.68); pConclusionsChildren with cancer are more likely to die within 30 days if infected with SARS-CoV-2. However, timely treatment reduced odds of death. This report provides crucial information to balance the benefits of providing anticancer therapy against the risks of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children with cancer.

Abstract

In this paper, an online method is presented for the estimation of open-circuit voltage ( $$V_{oc}$$ ) of the photovoltaic (PV) system. This technique analytically calculates the $$V_{oc}$$ by sensing the voltage, current, and temperature of the PV system without interrupting the power flow to load. The online technique is accurate, fast, and easy to implement. The accuracy and potency of the online technique are verified by both simulation and practicals results of a 245 W PV panel. Moreover, for the fair analysis, the recently developed analytical technique, i.e, two temperature sensor method is compared with the online method. It is verified from the hardware results that the accuracy of the online technique is higher than the two temperature sensor method.

Abstract

In this paper, an efficient online fractional open-circuit voltage (FOCV) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm based on sliding mode control (SMC) is presented. The proposed method determines the open-circuit voltage by sensing photovoltaic (PV) module voltage, current, and temperature without disconnecting the PV module. In addition, the proposed method utilizes the SMC strategy to track the maximum power and its results are compared with the conventional PI controller. The SMC achieves the high tracking speed with reduced oscillations and steady-state error as compared to the PI controller. Moreover, the advantages of the proposed method include 1) interruption-free output power 2) harness 2.7% more energy in variable irradiance and temperature conditions 3) higher tracking efficiency as compared to the conventional analytical FOCV algorithm. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method and SMC are tested at different environmental conditions in the Matlab/Simulink environment using the 245 W Yingli PV panel.

Abstract

Current outbreak of dengue has shown serious health concerns in Pakistan. The present study reports the anti-dengue potential of Carica papaya natural compounds. The leaves of C. papaya have previously shown promising results in cure of Dengue fever. The aim of this project is to find specific bioactive compounds by computational screening and biological activities of C. papaya against serine NS2B, NS3 and NS5 proteases of dengue virus. Docking study resulted in the screening of nine bioactive compounds having highest docking scores. However, three compounds namely epigallocatchin, catechin and protocatechuric acid had the strongest binding affinity with the active residues i.e., Ser135, His51 and Asp75 of dengue virus serine proteases. Results also indicated that the extract of C. papaya was a strong antimicrobial and antioxidant agent. It is concluded that the C. papaya compounds can be commercially applied for medical formulations against dengue virus.

Abstract

This project was carried out to find the prevalence of trypanosomiasis in equine in District Gujranwala by using indirect fluorescent antibody technique and thin smear method. Blood samples were collected from a total of 200 horses and donkeys of different ages and either sex. Duplicate thin blood smears were prepared from each sample and remaining blood samples were centrifuged to separate the serum. Smears from each animal were processed for giemsa staining and indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Giemsa stained smears revealed Trypanosome infection in 4/200 (2.0%) samples and IFAT in 12/200 (6.0%) animals.

Abstract

Conventionally, the power systems are operating separately as AC or DC grids. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages; however, if the AC loads need to be connected with the DC grid or DC loads with the AC grid, then DC-AC and AC-DC converters are required that results in conversion losses and an increase in the overall cost. Therefore, a comprehensive solution is the hybrid AC-DC grid in which DC loads relate to the DC grid and AC loads relate to the AC grid and one bi-directional converter joins both AC and DC grids and provides need-based power sharing between them. In future, it will be beneficial to operate big organizations, such as data centers, industry, and telecom exchanges under hybrid AC-DC grids because of the ever-increasing DC load demand and to avoid multiple AC-DC-AC conversion losses. Moreover, in recent times the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) is increasing rapidly and now workplaces are required to have their own EV fast charging docking stations that adds an extra DC load demand for the organizations. Therefore, by keeping the facts in view, we proposed a hybrid AC-DC nano-grid based distributed power generation and power consumption is proposed as a suitable solution to reduce multiple conversion losses within the organizations. The AC and DC load of the Lahore's central telecom exchange is modeled for the simulations. For hybrid AC-DC nano-grid, a droop controller based bi-directional converter is designed for need-based power sharing between AC and DC nano-grids. The proposed hybrid AC-DC nano grid eliminates the excessive voltage conversion problem of telecom exchanges; provide fuel cell and battery bank-based emergency backup solution along with DC fast charging system for the EVs.

Abstract

The penetration of Dispersed Energy Resources (DERs), such as photovoltaic systems and wind energy systems is progressively increasing in conventional power systems. However, the DERs bring the problems of AC-DC-AC conversion losses, increase in component cost, and reduction in power quality. Moreover, the power demand of DC load, such as telecom exchange networking system and Electric Vehicles (EVs) are increasing in recent times. In conventional power systems, the DC loads are connected to main AC grid through converters that result in an increased cost for the telecom networking system, and occurrence of AC to DC power conversion loss. The hybrid AC-DC microgrid for the distributed AC and DC power generations is a suitable solution to reduce the multiple reverse conversions within the telecom exchange. Therefore, in this paper, a droop controlled scheme is used for the hybrid AC-DC microgrid within a telecom exchange that manage voltage and power regulation, and energy management between AC and DC microgrids. The droop controller provides need based power sharing between AC and DC microgrids and enhance operational reliability of the DC loads, such as telecom exchanges and EVs.
