The greater the viscosity of the blood, the more difficult its flow becomes, leading to an increased incidence of diseases caused by blood circulation disorders. These diseases are commonly associated with the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems. High blood viscosity is a primary cause of circulatory system diseases. Studies have shown that accurately measuring blood viscosity and applying this data in clinical trials can help prevent circulatory system diseases. Viscosity data can vary depending on the measurement methods used, even when these methods are based on hydrodynamic principles. Despite using approved blood viscometers, the results often differ depending on the type of viscometer used, potentially causing confusion within the medical field. Informing the medical community about these differences and the level of error associated with each measurement method can help reduce this confusion. To our knowledge, the degree of difference in viscosity measurement results due to different measurement methods and the reasons for these differences have not yet been thoroughly explored. In this study, we selected three blood viscosity measurement methods registered with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety of Korea to analyze the same canine blood. The viscosity measurements were carried out using each device and compared. The parallel plate and scanning capillary methods yielded similar viscosity values, while the cone plate method showed lower viscosity values. The viscosity of blood, as measured by the three viscometers, differed, indicating that more experimental data must be accumulated to evaluate the cause of these differences. In this paper, we identified several causes of inconsistency and suggested measures to avoid this confusion. However, confirming that the test results show systematic differences is expected to assist clinicians who diagnose and prescribe treatments based on blood viscosity results. A simulation method has been developed to efficiently evaluate the motion of colloidal particles in a low-Reynolds-number confined microchannel flow using a Lagrangian-based approach. In this method, the background velocity within the channel, in the absence of suspended particles, is obtained from a fluid dynamics solver and is used to update the velocity at the particle centres using the Stokesian dynamics (SD) method, which incorporates multi-body hydrodynamic interactions. As a result, instead of computing the momentum of both the fluid and particles throughout the entire computational domain, the microscopic balance equation is solved only at the particle centres, increasing the computational efficiency. To accommodate complex boundary conditions within the SD framework, imaginary particles are placed on the channel walls, allowing the mobility relation to be reformulated to apply velocity constraints to immobilized wall particles. By employing this constrained SD approach, global mobility interactions that need to be computed at each time step are limited to the interior particles, resulting in a significant reduction in computational cost. The efficiency of this study is demonstrated through case studies on particulate flows in contraction and cross-flow microchannels. By using colloidal particles that incorporate Brownian motion and inter-particle attraction, observations through the entire stages of fouling dynamics are possible, from particle inflow to channel blockage. The fouling patterns observed in the simulations are consistent with experiments conducted under the same flow conditions. This study provides an efficient approach for analysing the effect of hydrodynamic interactions on particle dynamics in microfluidics and materials processing fields while allowing for predictions about structural changes over long-time scales, including complex phenomena such as clogging. Parallel superposition rheology has been explored using Brownian dynamics simulations on a model colloidal gel by imposing a small amplitude probing oscillation parallel to the main shear flow. This study aims to investigate the constituting principles behind the material functions in parallel superposition rheometry (PSR) and to elucidate the principles behind the structure responses. The viscoelastic spectra under frequency sweeps show that in a high-frequency region, each curve can be superimposed onto a single master curve using horizontal shift factors equal to viscosity which is a reminiscence of time-shear rate superposition in orthogonal superposition rheometry. This corresponds to the region where a parallel superposition analysis can be adequately performed as the shear rate controls the viscoelastic spectra of the gel independently from probing perturbation. On the other hand, in the low-frequency region, this principle breaks down and even negative storage modulus is observed due to the strong flow coupling effect, which is also found in experiments. By introducing the spatial moduli, it is found that the negative modulus originates from the attractive potential region. In the flow conditions where negative modulus occurs, the shear force is strong enough to break down every surface bond between the particles. In this state, the increase in structural factor in response to the rise in the shear rate dominates particle stress, even within the attractive potential region. This arises because the isolated particles have more opportunities to interact with other particles as the shear rate of the imposed perturbation increases. This structural response, influenced by the attractive potential, results in a negative storage modulus and a positive loss modulus after performing Fourier transformation. This paper, for the first time by a simulation approach, demonstrates the essential characteristics of the material functions obtained using PSR. Also, this study is expected to enhance our understanding on the flowing materials and suggest a criterion for the reliable application of superposition rheology using a viscoelastic master curve.
