Abstract

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is an inherited neurological disorder characterized by the progressive damage of the peripheral nerves. We generated a human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line JUCTCi019-A using dermal fibroblasts-derived from a 50-year-old CMT2A2 patient carrying a heterozygous missense substitution c.2119C > T (p.Arg707Trp) in the MFN2 gene. Fibroblasts were reprogrammed by Sendai viruses encoding for the reprogramming factors: OCT4, SOX2, KLF4 and c-MYC. Characterization showed normal iPSC morphology and karyotype, expression of pluripotency markers and differentiation into three-germ layers. This iPSC line represents an ideal source for disease modelling and drug development of CMT2A2 disease.

Abstract

Since December 2019, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) Caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), outbroke in Wuhan, China, and rapidly spread to all over the World.1-3 COVID-19 is an acute respiratory disease that can lead to respiratory failure and death. About 20%-51% of COVID-19 patients reported as having at least one comorbidity. The most prevalent comorbidity was hypertension (10%–30%), followed by diabetes (10%–20%) and coronary heart disease (7%–15%), which associated with poorer clinical outcomesIt is anticipated that chronic respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma may predispose patients to SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, the reported incidences of both diseases in patients with COVID-19 were frequently lower than the prevalence of these conditions in general population.

Abstract

Powder technology has a great impact on the industry and the need for the labor market since this technology has been used to manufacture copper-based composition models with a fixed rate of 5% of (SiC) with nanostructuring of (0,5,10,15,20) %. Regarding nanoscale zirconia (ZrO2), the mineral and ceramic powders were grinded with a grinding time of two hours for the purpose of homogeneity, then the powders were pressed at a pressure of 5 tons and a time of one minute only. Later, the properties were studied and the prepared samples were sintered at 900 °C for two hours.. The physical properties were represented by density and porosity, mechanical properties by compressive strength (samples failed) and wear and structural properties by SEM and EDS. The results showed that the true density and real porosity decreased with the increase in the size of the support ratios, while we noticed an increase in compressive strength with the increase of the added nanoscale ratios. As for the wear, its value decreased to reach the lowest value after sintering and at the ratio of 15% zirconia. Furthermore. the results of the scanning electron microscope showed that the ratio of 15% zirconia is the best percentage in terms of improving physical and mechanical properties. Abstract

Pharyngeal injuries caused by trauma are common and have been reported previously in the medical literature. In some cases of a penetrating injury there is a collection of air in the retropharyngeal space that can be shown on lateral soft tissue radiography of the neck. If this condition is not diagnosed or adequately treated the patient may develop severe complications such as mediastinitis. A case is reported of a patient with penetrating injury caused by a pencil and the subsequent treatment with review literature are described.

Abstract

Background: The management of large kidney stones is still one of today's topics in endourology. Supracostal Percu-taneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is found to be a highly effective procedure in treatment of renal calculi. However, many factors are affecting the safety and efficacy of the procedure.Aim of Study: The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors that affect the safety and efficacy of supracostal PCNL in kidney stones.Patients and Methods: Fifteen patients with renal calculi underwent supracostal percutaneous nephrolithotomy either with single access or multiple accesses. Pre-operative, operative and post-operative data were reported. Multivariate analyses as well as univariate analyses were used to investigate the effects of different variables on residual stones and blood transfusion rate. These factors include age, sex, laterality, body mass index, history of ipsilateral open renal surgery, operative time, and stone density.Results: The study included 15 patients with mean stone size is 2.5cm±0.6, all stones were radiopaque with mean HFU 969±134, R, 4 patients had upper calyceal stone (26.7%), 9 patients had stone pelvis and upper calyx (60%), and 2 patients had complex stone. (13.3%), 9 patients had multiple kidney punctures (60%) and 6 patients had single kidney puncture (40%), one case had positive signs of hydrothorax intraoper-atively (6.7%) by fluoroscopy, one case had pelvic perforation (6.7%), mean operative time was 105 minutes ±0.23, post-operative chest X-ray revealed positive signs in 2 cases (13.4%) with mild symptoms and needed no intervention, 1 case had significant post-operative bleeding (6.7%) and needed blood transfusion, mean hospital stay time was 2.7 days ±1.8, residual stones were encountered in 4 cases (27%).Conclusion: Supracostal PCNL is a safe and effective procedure for kidney stones more than 2cm. The stone free rate in the study was related mainly to patient’s comorbidities like BMI, stone size and site. Chest complications needed intervention in only one case, later on was completely free.

Abstract

From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the underweight tail of the BMI distribution was left behind as the distribution shifted. There is a need for policies that address all forms of malnutrition by making healthy foods accessible and affordable, while restricting unhealthy foods through fiscal and regulatory restrictions. © Copyright.

23. Effect of sodium chloride concentration on the functional properties of selected legume flours

Abstract

Providing safe, nutritious, and wholesome food for poor and undernourished populations has been a major challenge for developing countries. This has led to the necessity of assembling complete food composition tables, yielding information about the traditional foods and on the functional properties of the plant foods that are consumed regularly in the developing countries. Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is the common salt used at household and industry levels to improve palatability of processed foods. Therefore, the main aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of different concentrations of NaCl on the functional properties of selected legume flours. The effect of increasing concentration of NaCl on the protein solubility, emulsifying and foaming properties of white bean, pigeon pea, cowpea and hyacinth bean were studied. The results revealed that the protein solubility of pigeon pea, cowpea and white bean flours significantly increased by increasing salt concentration and reached a maximum at 0.4 M NaCl (for pigeon pea and cowpea flours) and 0.6 M for white bean flour and then gradually decreased at higher salt concentration. The protein solubility profile of hyacinth bean fluctuated with the salt concentration, with the highest solubility at 0.6 M NaCl and lowest solubility at 0.4 M NaCl. With the exception of white bean, the maximum emulsifying activity of all selected legume flours was found at 0.4 M NaCl whereas that of white bean was found at 0.2 M NaCl. Generally, with increasing salt concentration, the emulsifying activity slightly decreased for the legume flours, except for cowpea which fluctuated. Addition of NaCl significantly decreased the emulsion stability and foaming capacity of the four of selected legume with the maximum improvement being observed at 0.2 M NaCl, and then decreasing gradually at higher salt concentration. Significant improvement of foaming stability was observed when salt concentration increased. Based on the results of the present study the selected legume flour demonstrated good functional properties following the addition of NaCl, which makes these legume flours potential ingredients for application in salt containing foods. Abstract

BackgroundThe US National Institutes of Mental Health Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) seek to stimulate research into biologically validated neuropsychological dimensions across mental illness symptoms and diagnoses. The RDoC framework comprises 39 functional constructs designed to be revised and refined, with the overall goal of improving diagnostic validity and treatments. This study aimed to reach a consensus among experts in the addiction field on the ‘primary’ RDoC constructs most relevant to substance and behavioural addictions.MethodsForty‐four addiction experts were recruited from Australia, Asia, Europe and the Americas. The Delphi technique was used to determine a consensus as to the degree of importance of each construct in understanding the essential dimensions underpinning addictive behaviours. Expert opinions were canvassed online over three rounds (97% completion rate), with each consecutive round offering feedback for experts to review their opinions.ResultsSeven constructs were endorsed by ≥ 80% of experts as ‘primary’ to the understanding of addictive behaviour: five from the Positive Valence System (reward valuation, expectancy, action selection, reward learning, habit); one from the Cognitive Control System (response selection/inhibition); and one expert‐initiated construct (compulsivity). These constructs were rated to be related differentially to stages of the addiction cycle, with some linked more closely to addiction onset and others more to chronicity. Experts agreed that these neuropsychological dimensions apply across a range of addictions.ConclusionsThe study offers a novel and neuropsychologically informed theoretical framework, as well as a cogent step forward to test transdiagnostic concepts in addiction research, with direct implications for assessment, diagnosis, staging of disorder, and treatment.

Abstract

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.) is a perennial herb that is widely used in traditional medicines. An experiment was conducted under the agro-climatic conditions of National Research Centre, Giza, Egypt to determine the effect of time of harvesting on essential oil content and quality of M. officinalis. Essential oil content, and the concentrations of neral and geranial were measured from the fresh aerial parts of the plant during twelve monthly harvesting times, starting from May 2013 and ending in April, 2014. The starting time was two months after transplanting. Results of the statistical analysis revealed ontogenetic variability in the essential oil content of lemon balm. The highest essential oil content was obtained in September harvesting, followed by August and then by October harvesting time. Neral (20.1-35.0%) and geranial (23.8-51.2%) were the major constituents found in the essential oil and they varied with the harvest time. The results of this study suggest that the highest essential oil content of M. officinalis can be obtained by harvesting it in warmer months (September, August and October). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
