1. Dipole-dipole correlations in the nematic phases of symmetric cyanobiphenyl dimers and their binary mixtures with 5CB

Abstract

We report on the temperature dependence of birefringence and of the static dielectric permittivity tensor in a series of binary mixtures between the symmetric, bent-shaped, 1",9"-bis(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yl) nonane (CB9CB) dimer and the monomeric nematogen 5CB. In the studied composition range the mixtures exhibit two nematic phases with distinct birefringence and dielectric features. Birefringence measurements are used to estimate the temperature dependence of the tilt between the axis defining the nanoscale helical modulation of the low temperature nematic phase with the (local) direction of the maximal alignment of the cyanobiphenyl units. Planar as well as magnetically and/or electrically aligned samples are used to measure the perpendicular and parallel components of the dielectric permittivity in both nematic phases. A self-consistent molecular field theory that takes into account flexibility and symmetry of the constituent mesogens is introduced for the calculation of order parameters and intra-molecular orientational dipolar correlations of the flexible dimers as a function of temperature/concentration. Utilising the tilt angle, as calculated from the birefringence measurements, and the predictions of the molecular theory, dielectric permittivity is modelled in the framework of the anisotropic version of the Kirkwood-Frohlich theory. Using the inter-molecular Kirkwood correlation factors as adjustable parameters, excellent agreement between theory and permittivity measurements across the whole temperature range and composition of the mixtures is obtained. The importance of the orientational, intra- and inter-molecular, dipolar correlations, their relative impact on the static dielectric properties, as well as their connection with the local structure of the nematic phases of bent-shaped bimesogens, is discussed., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures and 4 pages supporting information with 5 figures

Abstract

The quadrupolar splittings of perdeuteriated n-decane dissolved in nematic phases formed by mesogenic dimers of the CBnCB series, for n=7,9,10,11 are measured throughout the entire temperature range of these phases. The results of the measurements, are reported together with related measurements using the common nematic phase of 5CB as a solvent for n-decane. The data obtained from the $^{13}$C spectra of the cyanobiphenyl mesogenic units of the monomeric and dimeric solvent molecules yield the order parameter of those units. The information obtained from this set of experiments is used to elucidate the structure of the low temperature (N$_X$) and the high temperature (N) nematic phases of CBnCB dimers with n=7,9,11. The polar twisted nematic (N$_{PT}$) model is found to provide a consistent description not only of these measurements, but also of NMR measurements previously reported in the literature for these phases. These findings suggest that the high temperature nematic (N) is not a common, locally uniaxial and apolar nematic, but rather a nematic phase consisting of N$_{PT}$ clusters. The twist-bend (N$_{TB}$) model, often identified with the N$_X$ phase, is shown to be inadequate to account even qualitatively for crucial features of the experimental findings., Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, 1 appendix, supplementary material

Abstract

Dimeric compounds forming twist-bend nematic, Ntb, phase show unusual optical texture related to the formation of arrays of focal conic defects. Some of the focal conics show submicron internal structure with 8 nm periodicity, which is very close to that found in the crystalline phase of the material, suggesting surface freezing.

Abstract

Several hydrocarbon linked mesogenic dimers are known to exhibit an additional nematic phase (NTB) below a conventional uniaxial nematic phase (N). The correlation between molecular structure and the nematic - nematic phase transitions (N-NTB) is not yet well understood. Nematic-nematic transitions are in thermotropic liquid crystals associated in most cases with the formation of a columnar structure in the low temperature nematic phase or the onset of cluster formation or with folding processes of polymer chains, there is evidence too for the formation of twist-bend structures as well as the formation of domain assemblies. The synthesis of a range of such dimeric materials, symmetric as well non-symmetric systems with both positive and negative dielectric anisotropy, containing linear and bent structures in the aromatic core systems is described in this thesis. The characterisation of these systems by the use of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (OPM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies is described in detail and the results for these systems are compared and structure properties relationships and the impact on the formation of nematic-nematic transitions are discussed.

11. Role of local government in indigenous market management in the rural areas of Bangladesh: Do these markets play development roles?

Hat-Bazars are the indigenous markets that work under the supervision of Local Government and owned by the Local Government in Bangladesh. These markets play vital role for the development in the rural areas of Bangladesh. But, there are challenges for proper management of the markets. Hat-Bazar under local government has the following characteristics: 1) It has legal entity under Local Government bodies and formed through an act of legislature named The State Acquisition and Tenancy Act, 1950. 2) It helps the local Government bodies to earn revenue and maintenance expenses. 3) Local businessmen and farmers can market their products and crops in these Hat-Bazars. 4) Central Government also earns revenue getting the land tax, VAT, income tax from the Hat-Bazars. This article is written based on a study. Objectives of the study were to learn the lease procedure of Hat-Bazar (Local Govt. Markets), to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of Hat-Bazar and to analyze the Hat-Bazar management under Upazila Parishad and Pourashava and to find out the ways for augmenting their income and its efficient and effective utilization. In respect of any particular reference the study was confined to the local government bodies of rural areas only. This study focused on the scheduled government markets (Hat-Bazar) of rural areas (Municipality and Upazila) only, but there were unauthorized markets in Govt. owned land also. Those markets were not taken into considerations. Depth interview method with structured questionnaire was adopted. A total number of 240 persons were interviewed. The interviewees comprised of cross-section of people including public representatives, Govt. officials, businesspersons, lessee and NGO workers. Observations and focus group discussion methods were taken into account also. Secondary sources of data were also included. Existing policy for the management of indigenous markets (Hat-Bazar) was reviewed for the study. Analyzing the responses of the respondents, collected data and observations following recommendations could be summarized: 1) Political interference should be stopped to make the local Govt. bodies effective and active. 2) Proper maintenance, sanitation and infrastructure should be ensured to make the govt. Hat-Bazar effective. 3) Political interference and administrative control should be avoided to make the Hat-Bazar committee effective. Businesspersons should get priority in Hat-Bazar management. 4) Hat-Bazar management policy should be made more understandable. 5) Lease should be ensured and direct collection should be avoided in order to increase revenue. 6) Leasing procedure should be made easy and should be done in short period. 7) Share of Upazila and Union Parishad and Municipality from Hat-Bazar should be increased. 8) Hat-Bazar management activities should be done in Upazila level. 9) Union Parishad may be given full authority to manage all Hat-Bazars up to a certain pecuniary limit. 10) Women marketers should get proper security and sitting arrangements. 11) Law and order situation should be maintained in Hat-Bazar. 12) The Hat-Bazar management committee should arrange special transportations for the businessperson so that they can carry their products in appropriate price. Government Hat-Bazars are the main indigenous markets of Bangladesh. From the very ancient period these markets are the only places where farmers and producers can sell their products. These markets control the local business as well as the national business. So, environment, infrastructure, and, law and order of these markets should be maintained properly. The Hat-Bazar management committees can ensure these with the help of local administration and the local Govt. authority. If proper management is ensured these indigenous markets could be able to aid the development of Bangladesh. Abstract

The thesis presents a critical edition of the first volume of Abu Bakr al-Khallal's "K. al-Musnad min Masa'il Ahmad b. Hanbal" accompanied by an introduction. In this work, the author collected in great detail the teachings and opinions of Imam Ibn Hanbal on religio-political and dogmatic controversies of early Islam, which the Imam left with a great number of disciples. Supported by the Qur'an and the Sunna, the work depicts in great detail the Sunni viewpoints of the problems relating to the institution of Khilafa, the first five Caliphs, the Companions in general, the Khawarij, the Rawafid, the Murji'a, Iman and Islam, Jabr and Qadar, the Jahmiya and the doctrine of the Creation of the Qur'an. Although the work is named as al-Musnad min Masa'il Ahmad, this is actually the K. al-Sunna of of al-Khallal frequently quoted by Ibn Taimiya and Ibn al-Qayyim in their theological works. The work contains, besides those ascribed to Ibn Hanbal, many statements from other doctors as well. As the MS. is unique, the text has been collated with other sources so far it has been possible, instead of other MSS. of the same work. In the glossary, besides indicating variations and mistakes, notes on important points have been provided. The introduction consists of six parts. In part I, a detailed discussion on the MS. has been made. Parts II and III deal with the life and works of Ibn Hanbal and al-Khallal respectively. In part IV, the background of the present work has been explained in which the development of early Islamic theology is discussed. Part V deals with the work itself, wherein Ibn Hanbal's opinions are discussed in relation to the theological problems of the time as well as to other relevant questions. Finally, the impact of Hanbalism on later development of Muslim theology and the value of our work are discussed.

Abstract

We investigate the origins of 'de Vries-like' liquid crystalline behaviour by introducing an ethynyl spacer in the core of the tricarbosilane-terminated 5-phenylpyrimidine mesogens QL16-6 and QL17-6. The rationale for this structural change is based on the assumption that an ethynyl spacer would create more free volume in the core sub-layer and therefore decrease the orientational order parameter S2 in the SmA phase. The tricarbosilane-terminated mesogens WL41-5 and WL42-6 with a 5-(phenylethynyl)pyrimidine core in either a normal or inverted orientation were synthesised, and their mesomorphic and 'de Vries-like' properties characterised using polarised optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, birefringence measurements, small–angle (SAXS) and 2D X-ray scattering. Reduction factors R derived from SAXS and optical tilt angle measurements suggest that neither WL41-5 (R = 0.49) nor WL42-6 (R = 0.80) exhibit 'de Vries-like' properties. The S2(T) profiles show an increase in orientational order with decreasing temperature and a sharp discontinuity at the SmA-SmC transition, which is consistent with 'de Vries-like' behaviour. However, the Leff(T) profiles suggest an increase in interdigitation that reduces the positive effect of increasing S2 in compensating for the molecular tilt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report the induction of the Ntb phase over a wide temperature and concentration range in a binary system. This was achieved by addition of a flexible dopant without LC properties to a flexible dimer exhibiting only a nematic LC phase.
