Background Tuberculous meningitis (TBM), manifests as the most severe involvement of the nervous system by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, it has a high mortality rate and a spectrum of systemic and neurological complications that can lead to debilitating or fatal sequelae, whereas hyponatremia is the commonly encountered life-threatening electrolyte disturbance. Thus, our study aimed to determine the prevalence, risk factors and differences in outcomes of hyponatremia in TBM. Methods This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42018088089). A comprehensive electronic search was conducted through ten databases to find relevant articles. Results A total of 42 studies were included, 24 case reports and 18 retrospective studies. The prevalence rate of hyponatremia among TBM patients was 52% and the rate of death among those patients was 29%. The meta-regression analysis revealed that there was no significant effect of sodium level on the death rate in TBM patients (P-value = 0.9). Additionally, there was no significant difference in sodium level based on sex, and etiologies of hyponatremia. Conclusions Hyponatremia is commonly present in patient with TBM, but it is not significantly correlated to the rate of death. However, it is necessary to treat this potentially life-threatening condition appropriately according to its etiology, further research is needed on its pathophysiology in TBM, its risk factors, and the most appropriate treatment.

The recent outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus (named “COVID-2019”) has gained attention globally and has been recognized as a serious public health threat by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The first case was detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and since then, the disease has spread rapidly. As of February 28, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the outbreak of COVID-2019 as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) with 62 countries now reporting 85,176 confirmed cases (79,250 of which have been in mainland China) and 2,919 deaths to date. However, information about the health systems and health professionals’ preparedness for combating the 2019-nCoV is not known. Therefore, their awareness and preparedness in managing the 2019-nCoV infection are important to prevent the further spread of the disease. This is a multicenter multinational survey aiming to assess the level of preparedness of hospital staff and practices regarding COVID-2019 all over the world and their preparedness to deal with the outbreak. It will also measure the level of awareness of hospital staff about the crisis and how will they react to limit and prevent further transmission.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused millions of deaths and hundreds of millions of confirmed infections worldwide. This pandemic has prompted researchers to produce medications or vaccines to reduce or stop the progression and spread of this disease. A variety of previously licensed and marketed medications are being tested for the treatment and recurrence of SARS-CoV2, including favipiravir (Avigan). Favipiravir was recognized as an influenza antiviral drug in Japan in 2014, and has been known to have a potential in vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2, in addition to its broad therapeutic safety scope. Favipiravir was recently approved and officially used in many countries worldwide. Our review provides insights and up-to-date knowledge of the current role of favipiravir in the treatment of COVID-19 infection, focusing on pre-clinical and ongoing clinical trials, evidence of its efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 in COVID-19, side effects, anti-viral mechanism, and the pharmacokinetic properties of the drug in the treatment of COVID-19. Due to its teratogenic effects, favipiravir cannot be offered to expectant or pregnant mothers. The practical efficacy of such an intervention regimen will depend on its dose, treatment duration, and cost as well as difficulties in application.
