Abstract First-principles calculations engaging density functional theory (DFT) are employed to systematically study the optical characteristics of monolayer and bilayer boron nitride (BN) triphenylene-graphdiyne (Tp-BNyne) structures featuring varying lengths of C-chains. The thermal stability of Tp-BNyne structures at temperatures up to 1000 K is verified. The weak van der Waals interactions due to the small binding energies and significant interlayer distances maintain the cohesion between the layers. The investigation revealed that all Tp-BNyne structures under examination exhibit semiconductor behavior with a band gap in the range of 0.97–2.74 eV. The bilayer configurations demonstrated a narrower energy band gap in comparison to the monolayer ones. Increasing the length of C-chains leads to a reduction in the energy band gap. Delving into the optical behavior of Tp-BNyne structures under photon incidence with parallel and perpendicular polarizations, a distinct anisotropy in the optical characteristics of Tp-BNyne is revealed. The static dielectric constant increases and the optical band gap decreases with increasing C-chain length. The absorption coefficients of monolayer and bilayer Tp-BNyne structures, on the order of 107/m, demonstrate that these sheets can effectively absorb light in the visible and ultraviolet regions. These findings present Tp-BNyne sheets as promising candidates for use in photovoltaic devices to convert sunlight into electrical current, as well as for designing optical devices for ultraviolet protection. Additionally, Tp-BNyne structures are transparent materials, especially in the high-energy range.

The impact of Post COVID-19 Condition (PCC) is ongoing despite the declaration that the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic has ended. In this study, we explore the prevalence of PCC among healthcare workers (HCWs) in four African Countries and its influence on their professional performance. This study was conducted as an online cross-sectional survey of healthcare workers from four African countries (Cameroon, Egypt, Nigeria, and Somalia) between the 20th of December 2021 to 12th of January 2022. We determined the prevalence of PCC based on the WHO case definition and assessed variables associated with a higher prevalence of PCC in these countries using univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses. A total of 706 HCWs from four African countries were included in this survey. Most of the HCWs were aged between 18–34 years (75.8%, n = 535). Our findings showed that 19.5% (n = 138) of the HCWs had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. However, 8.4% (n = 59) were symptomatic for COVID-19 but tested negative or were never tested. Two-thirds of the HCWs (66.4%, n = 469) have received a COVID-19 vaccine and 80.6% (n = 378) of those vaccinated had been fully vaccinated. The self-reported awareness rate of PCC among the HCWs was 16.1% (n = 114/706) whereas the awareness rate of PCC among COVID-19-positive HCWs was 55.3% (n = 109/197). The prevalence of PCC among HCWs was 58.8% (n = 116). These changes include the self-reported symptoms of PCC which included headache (58.4%, n = 115), fatigue (58.8%, n = 116), and muscle pain (39.6%, n = 78). Similarly, 30% (n = 59) and 20.8% (n = 41) of the HCWs reported the loss of smell and loss of taste long after their COVID-19 infection, respectively. Some HCWs (42%, n = 83) believed that their work performance has been affected by their ongoing symptoms of PCC. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of PCC among the vaccinated and unvaccinated HCWs (p > 0.05). Of the socio-demographic variables, age (older HCWs between 45–54 years; OR:1.7; 95% CI: 1.06, 10.59; p = 0.001) and location (Egypt; OR:14.57; 95% CI: 2.62, 26.76; p = 0.001) were more likely to have experienced PCC than other age groups and countries respectively. The study revealed a low prevalence of PCC among the surveyed HCWs. In addition, it observed the need for adequate medical and psychological support to HCWs with PCC and improved mass advocacy campaigns on PCC.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Analysing samples of municipal wastewater influent (before treatment) can help to map the status of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) at the population level in sewershed communities and may also help in predicting the public health risks of ARB in surface water because of the outfall of wastewater. In this study, we investigated the bacterial isolates carrying beta-lactamase genes in wastewater and compared their genotypic and phenotypic characteristics. Methods: A total of 399 bacterial isolates grown on CHROMagarESBL (n = 207) and CHROMagarKPC (n = 192) from composite wastewater influent samples (n = 7) from the Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant (Helsinki) were subcultured, nucleic acid was extracted, and the prevalence of different beta-lactamase genes was screened with multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All PCR-positive isolates were identified with MALDI-TOF. Results: A total of 32.6% of isolates (130 of 399) were PCR positive for at least one resistance gene, and 13% of these positive isolates out of 130 had at least three resistance genes. Among the 22 detected genes, blaGES group was the most prevalent, at 25.8% (n = 198; many isolates carried multiple genes), followed by blaMOX (13.1%) and blaTEM (10.1%) as most frequently detected. Furthermore, out of 18 different bacterial species/genera detected as carrying beta-lactamase genes, A. hydrophila/caviae (28.5%), Enterobacter spp. (16.9%), and E. coli (14.6%) were the most prevalent. Enterobacter spp., Aeromonas spp., and K. cryocescens potentially carried AmpC genes, and E. coli carried ESBL genes. Conclusion: We recorded a huge variety of beta-lactamases (blaAmpC, blaESBL, and blaCARBA) genes in many potential pathogens that probably originated from both enteric and environmental sources.

The dwindling air quality and diminishing fossil fuel reserves have led to an increase in the need for alternative sources of fuel. Biodiesel derived from animal/plant sources seems to be an attractive substitution. However, there are some shortcomings of biodiesel like lower thermal efficiency, poor atomization, inferior heating value, and higher molecular mass. One of the probable novel ways to address this lacuna is by the use of nano based biodiesel in IC engine. The present study performs an endeavor to improve the performance and emulsion qualities of biodiesel generated from mahua oil by employing Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles as an additive. All trials were conducted in a diesel-powered engine at varying load levels with different test fuel such as diesel fuel, blended biodiesel (80 % diesel + 20 % mahua biodiesel), and nanoparticle-based blended biodiesel (80 % diesel + 20 % mahua biodiesel – 200 mg/L TiO2). When compared to diesel mode, the average CO emission reduction for blended biodiesel and nanoparticle-based blended biodiesel is 37.42 % and 46.54 %, respectively. In comparison to diesel mode, the average reduction in HC emission is 22.54 % for the blended biodiesel and 28.4 % for the nanoparticle-based blended biodiesel, respectively. When compared to diesel mode, the average reduction in NOx emission is 4 % and 2.3 % for the blended biodiesel and nanoparticle-based blended biodiesel, respectively.

This research evaluated the effluent proportion of E. coli and ETEC in RTE meat products, characterized the isolated strains' clonal relatedness, and determined their antibiotic resistance. 130 RTE products were gathered from various restaurants and street fast food vendors in Duhok and Zakho Province. The Isolates of E. coli identified by culture methods were confirmed as ETEC by multiplex PCR of the identified virulence genes. ERIC-PCR was applied to establish the clonal relationships between strains. The disk diffusion method performed the susceptibility of antibiotics on the isolated ETEC. Out of 130 examined samples, 39 (30%) isolates of E. coli and 16 (12.3%) ETEC were detected. Pan-fried burgers were revealed to be the most frequent contaminated sample type, with both E. coli and ETEC 50% and 23.3%, respectively (P≤0.05). A high clonal dispersion (12 genotypes) was observed among the isolated ETEC strains. A strong genetic linkage was discovered between a few isolates retrieved from the same sample type and within the strains from the same geographic source area. A high antibiotic resistance rate was observed with total resistance to Amoxicillin/clavulanate, Clarithromycin, Doxycycline, Erythromycin, and Clindamycin. Isolates from burger samples showed a higher resistance rate when compared with the other sample types (P≤0.05). Multi-drug resistance was noticed in all ETEC isolates. RTE meat products sold in our area have a high rate of clonally heterogeneous carrying multi-drug resistant ETEC and may constitute a significant public health risk.

Abstract Background In the light of recent years, an increase in the number of life-threatening infections due to various fungi has been observed, especially in tertiary care centres. With Amphotericin B labelled as the first choice in treating these infections, one of its common side effects, nephrotoxicity, along with hypokalemia, were studied to determine the epidemiology, risk factors, and protective measures. Methodology The study was a retrospective observational chart review study in which patients were receiving conventional Amphotericin B in two tertiary hospitals in Palestine from January 2018 to December 2020 were evaluated for the development of hypokalemia and nephrotoxicity; according to the KDIGO criteria. A total of 117 patients were included in the study. Patients who have received the drug intermittently, in fewer than two doses, through non-IV routes and patients under the age of 12 were excluded. The data collected included, but were not limited to, age, gender, comorbidities, Amphotericin B treatment details, medications, COVID-19 status, risk factors, and hypothesized protective measures. Results The incidence of conventional Amphotericin B nephrotoxicity and hypokalemia was 46% and 33%, respectively. With a roughly equal representation of both genders and a median age of 52 years in a range of 13–89. No association between the variables and the development of nephrotoxicity was found. However, a 3.4 increased risk (p-value = 0.01) of developing hypokalemia in females compared to males was observed. Conclusion Our research has shown a relatively lower yet consistent, incidence of conventional amphotericin B nephrotoxicity and hypokalemia compared to literature with gender being a risk factor for developing hypokalemia.

Background: Obesity is a well-recognized risk factor for difficult intubation. To safely manage and overcome airway challenges in severely obese patients with a suspected difficult airway, awake fiberoptic intubation is recommended. We aimed to investigate the utility of awake nasal fiberoptic intubation in severely obese patients with suspected difficult airway while positioning them in the lateral decubitus position. Methods: This randomized controlled trial compared lateral and supine positions for awake nasal fiberoptic intubation in severely obese patients with an anticipated difficult airway by assessing the success rate, time needed to secure the airway, peri-procedural adverse events, and postoperative satisfaction of patients. Results: Sixty patients with a median age of 37 [inter-quartile range (IQR): 29–44] years were included, of which 47 (78.3%) were females. The median body mass index (BMI) was 45.5 [IQR: 42.5–50.8] kg/m2. The success rate of fiberoptic intubation was 100% in both groups. The time needed to successfully secure the airway was 188 [148.8–228.8] seconds (s) in the lateral position, compared to 214.5 [181.8–280.5] s in supine position (p = 0.019). Intraprocedural cough was more common in the supine position group (n = 8; 26.7%), compared to the lateral position group (n = 3; 10%; p = 0.095). Postoperative sore throat was more common in the lateral position group (n = 12; 40%) compared to the supine position (n = 5; 16.7%; p = 0.045). Conclusions: In conclusion, Intubation in the lateral position is a promising technique that is equivalent to the routine supine position during fiberoptic intubation. In fact, intubation in the lateral position took less time to successfully secure the airway.

Water deficit is one of the major limiting factors of seed crop germination and productivity. Consequently, superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) are among several technologies that enhance water use efficiency, leading to worthy seed germination. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential effect of three rates of SAPs (0.0%, 0.5%, and 1.0% w/w) on the seedling emergence of barley and fenugreek sown in a sandy soil using three replicates in a randomized complete block design. Outdoor pot experiments were conducted in Aswan Province, Egypt. The differences in the final germination percentages (FGPs) were not significant for both seeds, while the application of SAPs enhanced the seedling germination index (GI) with significant differences for both crop seeds. The application of SAP at 0.5% gave the highest GI for barley (2.47 day−1) and fenugreek (2.66 day−1) seeds. The sigmoidal function effectively described the cumulative germination percentage rates for both seeds as a function of time under the SAP levels with R2 greater than 0.992. The maximum rates were 69.4 and 64.6 day−1 for barley and fenugreek seeds at SAP 0.5%, respectively. The corresponding rates for 0.0% SAP were 11 and 12 day−1. The water germination efficiencies (WGE) were 27.76 and 30.04 cm−1 for 0.0% and 0.5% SAP for barley, while they were 23.07 and 29.9 cm−1 for fenugreek. Accordingly, SAPs could represent a promising solution for increasing moisture conservation for seed germination in a sand soil. For strategic management, barley is recommended for growth over fenugreek in a semidried soil.

The main purpose of solving a classical generation capacity expansion problem is to ensure that, in the medium- to long-term time frame, the electric utility has enough capacity available to reliably satisfy the demand for electricity from its customers. However, the ability to operate the newly built power plants also has to be considered. Operation of these plants could be curtailed by fuel availability, environmental constraints, or intermittency of renewable generation. This suggests that when generation capacity expansion problems are solved, along with the yearly timescale necessary to capture the long-term effect of the decisions, it is necessary to include a timescale granular enough to represent operations of generators with a credible fidelity. Additionally, given that the time horizon for a capacity expansion model is long, stochastic modeling of key parameters may generate more insightful, realistic, and judicious results. In the current model, we allow the demand for electricity and natural gas to behave stochastically. Together with the dual timescales, the randomness results in a large problem that is challenging to solve. In this paper, we experiment with synergistically combining elements of several methods that are, for the most part, based on Benders decomposition and construct an algorithm which allows us to find near-optimal solutions to the problem with reasonable run times.

Infectious diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant bacterial (ARB) pathogens are a serious threat to human and animal health. The active surveillance of ARB using an integrated one-health approach can help to reduce the emergence and spread of ARB, reduce the associated economic impact, and guide antimicrobial stewardship programs. Wastewater surveillance (WWS) of ARB provides composite samples for a total population, with easy access to the mixed community microbiome. This concept is emerging rapidly, but the clinical utility, sensitivity, and uniformity of WWS of ARB remain poorly understood especially in relation to clinical evidence in sewershed communities. Here, we systematically searched the literature to identify studies that have compared findings from WWS of ARB and antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) with clinical evidence in parallel, thereby evaluating how likely WWS of ARB and ARG can relate to the clinical cases in communities. Initially, 2,235 articles were obtained using the primary search keywords, and 1,219 articles remained after de-duplication. Among these, 35 articles fulfilled the search criteria, and an additional 13 relevant articles were included by searching references in the primary literature. Among the 48 included papers, 34 studies used a culture-based method, followed by 11 metagenomics, and three PCR-based methods. A total of 28 out of 48 included studies were conducted at the single sewershed level, eight studies involved several countries, seven studies were conducted at national or regional scales, and five at hospital levels. Our review revealed that the performance of WWS of ARB pathogens has been evaluated more frequently for Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp., and other members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, but has not been uniformly tested for all ARB pathogens. Many wastewater-based ARB studies comparing the findings with clinical evidence were conducted to evaluate the public health risk but not to relate with clinical evidence and to evaluate the performance of WWS of ARB. Indeed, relating WWS of ARB with clinical evidence in a sewershed is not straightforward, as the source of ARB in wastewater cannot be only from symptomatic human individuals but can also be from asymptomatic carriers as well as from animal sources. Further, the varying fates of each bacterial species and ARG within the sewerage make the aim of connecting WWS of ARB with clinical evidence more complicated. Therefore, future studies evaluating the performance of many AMR pathogens and their genes for WWS one by one can make the process simpler and the interpretation of results easier.

Cross-border healthcare is an international agreement for the provision of out of country healthcare for citizens of partnered countries. The European Union (EU) has established itself as a world leader in cross-border healthcare. During the Coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the EU used this system to maximize utilization of resources. Countries with capacity accepted critically ill patients from overwhelmed nations, borders remained open to healthcare workers and those seeking medical care in an effort to share the burden of this pandemic. Significant research into the challenges and successes of cross-border healthcare was completed prior to COVID-19, which demonstrated significant benefit for patients.In North America, the response to the COVID-19 crisis has been more isolationist. The Canada-United States border has been closed and bans placed on healthcare workers crossing the border for work. Prior to COVID-19, cross-border healthcare was rare in North America despite its need. We reviewed the literature surrounding cross-border healthcare in the EU, as well as the need for a similar system in North America. We found the EU cross-border healthcare agreements are generally mutually beneficial for participating countries. The North American literature suggested a cross-border healthcare system is feasible. A number of challenges could be identified based on the EU experience. A prior agreement may have been beneficial during the COVID-19 crisis as many Canadian healthcare institutions-maintained capacity to accept critically ill patients.

The abuse and misuse of antibiotics is one of the main drivers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Globally, AMR in food-producing animals is a significant public health concern. This study, therefore, assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to antibiotic usage (AMU) and AMR among poultry farmers in Nepal. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 605 poultry farmers from six districts of Nepal from May to June 2022 to assess the status of knowledge, attitude, as well as practices toward prudent antibiotic usage (AMU) and AMR. The majority of the participants in our study were from the Chitwan district (31.6%; n = 191/605), aged 30–44 (54.2%; n = 328/605), males (70.4%; n = 426/605), and farmers with a higher secondary (28.76%; n = 174/605) level of education. The tetracyclines (28%, n = 228/828), aminoglycosides (23%, n = 188/828), and fluoroquinolones (15%, n = 126/828) were the most used antibiotics classes among poultry farmers. Although 87.8% (n = 531/605) of poultry farmers used antibiotics, 49.8% (n = 301/605) of them were aware of AMR, and 55.7% (n = 337/605) knew that the misuse of antimicrobials could affect human and environmental health. There were significant differences in the knowledge, attitude, and practices toward prudent AMU and AMR among farmers who reared different birds. The mean knowledge, attitude, and practice score of the respondents were 7.81 ± 3.26, 5.8 ± 2.32, and 7.59 ± 3.38 when measured on a scale of 12, 10, and 15, respectively. Based on a cut-off of 75% of the maximum score, 49.4% (n = 299/605), 62.8% (n = 380/605), and 12.73% (n = 77/605) of the respondents had good knowledge, attitude, and practices toward prudent AMU and AMR, respectively. The multivariable logistic regression analyses revealed that the positive predictors of good knowledge and attitude were male gender, higher level of education, district, and the types of birds (layers). Similarly, those of the male gender (OR: 3.36; 95% CI: 1.38–8.20; p = 0.008) and those that rear layers (OR: 4.63; 95% CI: 1.75–12.25; p = 0.003) were more likely to practice prudent usage of antimicrobials. The findings of this study show poor practice toward prudent antibiotic usage despite good knowledge of AMR. This study provides essential baseline data on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of poultry farmers in Nepal and offers valuable insights that could help in the design of interventions and policies aimed at addressing illicit AMU and AMR in poultry in Nepal.

A microwave hot pressing machine (MHPM) was used to heat the colander to produce fixed oils from each of castor, sunflower, rapeseed, and moringa seed and compared them to those obtained using an ordinary electric hot pressing machine (EHPM). The physical properties, namely the moisture content of seed (MCs), the seed content of fixed oil (Scfo), the yield of the main fixed oil (Ymfo), the yield of recovered fixed oil (Yrfo), extraction loss (EL), six Efficiency of fixed oil extraction (Efoe), specific gravity (SGfo), refractive index (RI) as well as chemical properties, namely iodine number (IN), saponification value (SV), acid value (AV), and the yield of fatty acid (Yfa) of the four oils extracted by the MHPM and EHPM were determined. Chemical constituents of the resultant oil were identified using GC/MS after saponification and methylation processes. The Ymfo and SV obtained using the MHPM were higher than those for the EHPM for all four fixed oils studied. On the other hand, each of the SGfo, RI, IN, AV, and pH of the fixed oils did not alter statistically due to changing the heating tool from electric band heaters into a microwave beam. The qualities of the four fixed oils extracted by the MHPM were very encouraging as a pivot of the industrial fixed oil projects compared to the EHPM. The prominent fatty acid of the castor fixed oil was found to be ricinoleic acid, making up 76.41% and 71.99% contents of oils extracted using the MHPM and EHPM, respectively. In addition, the oleic acid was the prominent fatty acid in each of the fixed oils of sunflower, rapeseed, and moringa species, and its yield by using the MHPM was higher than that for the EHPM. The role of microwave irradiation in facilitating fixed oil extrusion from the biopolymeric structured organelles (lipid bodies) was protruded. Since it was confirmed by the present study that using microwave irradiation is simple, facile, more eco-friendly, cost-effective, retains parent quality of oils, and allows for the warming of bigger machines and spaces, we think it will make an industrial revolution in oil extraction field.

Background: Molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) is a common disorder of tooth development, which has recently been found to be associated with a higher prevalence of hypodontia. The aim of this international multicentre study is to determine the association between MIH and other developmental anomalies in different populations. Methods: Investigators were trained and calibrated for the assessment of MIH and dental anomalies and ethical approvals obtained in each participating country. The study aimed to recruit 584 children with MIH and 584 children without MIH. Patients aged 7–16 years who attend specialist clinics will be invited to participate. Children will undergo a clinical examination to determine the presence and severity of MIH, using an established index. The presence of any other anomalies, affecting tooth number, morphology, or position, will be documented. Panoramic radiographs will be assessed for dental anomalies and the presence of third permanent molars. Statistical analysis, using a chi squared test and regression analysis, will be performed to determine any differences in dental anomaly prevalence between the MIH and non-MIH group and to determine any association between dental anomalies and patient characteristics. Conclusion: This large-scale study has the potential to improve understanding about MIH with benefits for patient management.

We report the development of a high sensitivity H2S gas sensor based on perovskite nanoparticles, which can be synthesized using relatively simple solution-growth methods. The gas sensor was fabricated from the metal halide perovskite formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3), which exhibits a high sensitivity to H2S gas in the form of changes to the electrical conductivity. The response of the sensor to H2S gas showed a high sensitivity to gas concentrations in the range 0.5 – 100 ppm, with a fast response time of less than one minute under ambient room conditions.

An unexpected formation of carbamothioates by a sodium hydride-mediated reaction of arylmethyl isocyanides with xanthate esters in DMF is reported. The products thus obtained were compared with the carbamothioates obtained by the sodium hydride-mediated condensation of the corresponding benzylamines and xanthate esters in DMF. To account for these unexpected reactions, a mechanism is proposed in which the key steps are supported by quantum chemical calculations.

A new look-up table based behavioral model for dynamic nonlinear power amplifiers is proposed. This model labelled as hybrid look-up tables model is based on the combination of a memoryless look-up table sub-model and a nested look-up tables one. It is demonstrated that the proposed model circumvents the computational complexity associated with the parameters identification in analytically defined behavioral models. Moreover, the proposed model reduces the size of the standalone nested look-up tables model by approximately 80% while maintaining its accuracy. Furthermore, a novel slew-rate based trimming and indexing technique to reduce the nested look-up tables model size is developed and corroborated experimentally. Additionally, the two-box structure of the hybrid look-up tables model makes it suitable for bandwidth scalability. Experimental validation using LTE-advanced test signals with up to 120MHz bandwidth demonstrates the ability of the proposed hybrid look-up tables model to be bandwidth scalable with less than 0.5dB degradation in the normalized mean-squared error.

With over twelve months since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, its morbidity and mortality continue to be a critical health threat despite various instituted preventive and control efforts. Information on the multi-regional public perspective of the diseases is limited. Therefore, this study investigated public knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards COVID-19 across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and South Asia (SA) regions of the world. In an online pretested questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey, respondents (n = 2738) were recruited using a convenience sampling technique and data obtained were subjected to descriptive and inferential statistics. The majority of respondents had bachelor’s degrees or higher (91.1%) and were aged between 18 and 39 years (88%). Most of the respondents had satisfactory knowledge (73%, 15.4 ± 2.5), attitudes 76.8%, 7.1 ± 1.1, and perceptions (73.4%, 11±2.8). Participants with higher educational levels and scientific backgrounds were 1.71 times (95% CI: 1.44; 2.03; p < 0.001) more likely to have a better knowledge of COVID-19. Respondents from the SA region were significantly more likely (OR: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.16, 1.68; p < 0.001) to possess satisfactory knowledge of COVID-19. Meanwhile, respondents from the MENA region (OR: 7.81; 95% CI: 6.12, 9.97; p < 0.001) have better attitudes and are more optimistic about ending the pandemic than those from the SSA. Despite the satisfactory knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards the regional efforts observed, we emphasize continued adherence by the public to the health regulations and safety measures of countries in these regions. There is a need for the low and middle-income countries to improve awareness of COVID-19 preventive practices.

The outbreak of highly contagious transboundary rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) in Nigeria has a severe socio-economic impact on the rabbit industry. We present the outbreak investigation and spatial epidemiology of the first confirmed RHD outbreak in Nigeria from a field survey of 28 stochastic outbreaks in Kwara State, north-central Nigeria. A total of 1,639 rabbits died from 2,053 susceptible rabbits. The serotype “RHDV-2” was detected in tissue samples from some of the outbreaks. The case fatality rate of the RHDV-2 outbreak was 79.8%. The source of the outbreak is still unknown. Most (71.4%) of the farmers had introduced new rabbits into their farms 1–2 weeks before the outbreak. Most of the farmers practiced biosecurity measures such as farm fencing (83.1%) and routine disinfection of the farm materials (53.6%). However, only 17.8% of the farmers enforced movement restrictions into their farms. Some of the farmers (42.8%) had restocked their farms after being affected by the RHD outbreak and 75% of all those farmers that have restocked had used the RHD vaccine. There was no statistically significant association between adherence to biosecurity measures and the RHD outbreak in affected farms (p = 0.408). However, the introduction of new rabbits into rabbit farms significantly pre-disposed farms to the RHD outbreak (p < 0.001). There is a need for active surveillance of RHD across the country to ensure efficient and effective tracking, monitoring, and control of the disease. Equally, understanding the genetic diversity of the Lagoviruses in Nigeria that cause RHD to aid vaccine development is of utmost importance to prevent future RHD outbreaks.

In the direct searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) as Dark Matter candidates, the sensitivity of the detector to the incom- ing particle direction could provide a smoking gun signature for an interesting event. The SCENE collaboration firstly suggested the possible directional de- pendence of a dual-phase argon Time Projection Chamber through the columnar recombination effect. The Recoil Directionality project (ReD) within the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration aims to characterize the light and charge re- sponse of a liquid Argon dual-phase TPC to neutron-induced nuclear recoils to probe for the hint by SCENE. In this work, the directional sensitivity of the de- tector in the energy range of interest for WIMPs (20-100 keV) is investigated with a data-driven analysis involving a Machine Learning algorithm.

The twentieth century started with engineers’ new concepts and ideas to develop the built environment, with ideas ranging from reducing weight to automated industrialisation, enhancing energy efficiency, etc. However, they failed to predict the negative impact of automation on the environment and its resources. Therefore, future technologies proposed by engineers should consider the adverse effects on nature and the surrounding ecosystem. Using the science of ecology and integrating it into building typology can help avoid unwanted scenarios. Such technologies prioritise the performance of buildings and cities by using simulation tools to explore more ideas for designing and testing their performance. This work explores the obstacles and challenges opposing the plan to successfully supply Egypt with clean, renewable energy that reaches 42% of its total electricity. Furthermore, some solutions are proposed to tackle those barriers, such as installing thermal cooling systems and ball wind turbines in residential buildings.

Electrospinning technique was employed to fabricate composite nanofibers/nanoparticles of sulfonated polyether ether ketone, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and ruthenium oxide (sPEEK/PVP/RuO2). The samples were synthesized with different concentrations of hydrous ruthenium chloride of 2 wt%, 5 wt%, and 10 wt%, and then annealed at a temperature of 300 °C for 4 h to form the ruthenium oxide nanoparticles. Several characterization tests were conducted to study and compare the performance of the samples. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated the successful fabrication of nanofibers with diameter range of 140–240 nm as well as nanoparticles with average sizes within the range of 6 nm and 9 nm. The effect of annealing and RuO2 addition was illustrated by the decrease in fibers diameter. The vibration mode and structure of the samples were studied by Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTIR) along with Raman spectroscopy that revealed the strong interaction as well as crosslinking between the polymer blend and RuO2. The annealed samples exhibit enhanced thermal stability and less crystallinity as compared to the as prepared samples according to thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) along with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Impedance spectroscopy tests were conducted to study the electrical properties of the samples as a function of ruthenium oxide concentration and temperature. The results illustrated the increase in resistivity as well as the activation energy with the increase of nanoparticle concentration due to the reduction in the free SO3H groups because of the strong ionic crosslinking. These observations revealed the enhancement of nanofiber properties at low temperatures, which make them suitable for different applications including supercapacitor as well as sensor applications at low temperatures.

Biomolecular detection methods have evolved from simple chemical processes to laboratory sensors capable of acquiring accurate measurements of various biological components. Recently, silicon nanowire field-effect transistors (SiNW-FETs) have been drawing enormous interest due to their potential in the biomolecular sensing field. SiNW-FETs exhibit capabilities such as providing real-time, label-free, highly selective, and sensitive detection. It is highly critical to diagnose infectious diseases accurately to reduce the illness and death spread rate. In this work, a novel SiNW-FET sensor is designed using a semiempirical approach, and the electronic transport properties are studied to detect the COVID-19 spike protein. Various electronic transport properties such as transmission spectrum, conductance, and electronic current are investigated by a semiempirical modeling that is combined with a nonequilibrium Green’s function. Moreover, the developed sensor selectivity is tested by studying the electronic transport properties for other viruses including influenza, rotavirus, and HIV. The results indicate that SiNW-FET can be utilized for accurate COVID-19 identification with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Background: We aim to evaluate the effect of surface conditioning, bonding agents and composite types on surface roughness (SR) and shear bond strength (SBS) of clear aligner composite attachments bonded to ceramics. Methods: One hundred and eighty IPS e.max CAD specimens were prepared. For SR, 60 specimens were divided according to surface conditioning (n = 15) into four groups: control, 9.6% hydrofluoric acid (HFA), 37% phosphoric acid (PhA), air abrasion (AA). SR was measured using a Profilometer and Atomic Force Microscopy. For SBS, 120 specimens were divided according to conditioning methods (n = 40) (9.6% HFA and 37% PhA or AA), then according to bonding agents (n = 20) (Assure universal bond (AUB) or Single bond universal (SBU)) and then according to composite type (n = 10): Filtek™ Z350 and Filtek™ Z350 XT flowable composite. SBS was measured using Instron testing machine. Descriptive and group comparison were calculated (p < 0.05). Results: AA had the highest SR, while the control had the lowest SR (p < 0.05). HFA had the highest, but insignificant SBS, followed by AA (p > 0.05). AUB had higher SBS than SBU (p < 0.001). Filtek™ Z350 produced higher SBS than Filtek™ Z350 XT flowable composite (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The combination of AA, AUB, and Filtek Z350 produced the highest SBS, followed by HFA, AUB, and Filtek Z350.

A first principles investigation is carried out in this work for the adsorption of H2S gas on pristine and modified armchair-graphene nanoribbon (AGNR). CuOx (x=0,1,or2) is introduced to AGNR structures either by substitution of carbon atoms or through the decoration of their surfaces. The effect of modification on adsorption of H2S gas is explored using density functional theory (DFT) calculations of band structure, adsorption energy (EAds), charge transfer (ΔQ), adsorption length, and density of states (DOS). The results demonstrate great enhancement towards H2S adsorption upon modification. In general, the adsorption energy of H2S is higher for structures where CuOx substitutes carbon atoms as compared with structures where CuOx decorates AGNR surface. The results indicate that AGNR doped with CuO2 exhibits the maximum adsorption energy, followed by AGNR doped with CuO. AGNR doped with Cu or decorated with Cu, CuO, or CuO2 exhibit lower adsorption energy for H2S. Finally, the achieved results indicate that AGNR doped with CuO2 or CuO have potential for H2S sensor applications.

Deficit irrigation water (DW) is one of the main stress factors that negatively affect cotton cultivation. Hence, the identification of cotton cultivars tolerant to DW and sandy soil conditions is particularly needed. Understanding the response of cultivars to DW is essential for estimating water needs. Besides, by understanding the physiological and antioxidant status, reflecting distinct growth, yield, and fiber quality traits under DW, the cultivar tolerant to DW can be identified in the early stage of plant growth. Therefore, two cotton cultivars (Giza 86 and Giza 92, selected for their suitability to the climatic conditions of the study area) were evaluated in this study under two DW regimes (80% or 60% of crop evapotranspiration; ETc) vs. complete irrigation water (CW; 100% of ETc as a control). These regimes amounted to 1228 or 922 vs. 1536 mm season−1, respectively, for field trials conducted during the 2019 and 2020 summer seasons. DW (80% or 60% of ETc) significantly decreased relative water content, membrane stability index, chlorophyll content, plant height, yield components, and fiber quality traits. Otherwise, phenolic compounds, proline contents, as well as antioxidant enzyme activities increased in concomitance with an increase in electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde content. The harmful effects of the higher DW (60% of ETc) were more pronounced in both cultivars. However, compared to Giza 86, Giza 92 showed higher performance under both CW and DW regimes, accounting for higher values for all studied traits in the blooming stage. The correlation coefficient showed that most of the physiological traits and antioxidants under study were effective criteria in identifying a high-yielding cultivar under DW in the cotton blooming stage and therefore can be used to select the cotton cultivar more suitable for the conditions of the study area. Biplot analysis was used to study the relationship between DW and all evaluated traits, as it was found that the most prominent traits were elongation (%) with Giza 92 + 100% ETc, yellowness degree with Giza 86 + 100% ETc, and SOD with Giza 92 + 60% ETc.

Relapse is the main cause of mortality in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Adverse cytogenetic or molecular risk factors, as well as refractory disease or persistent measurable residual disease (MRD) at the time of transplantation are associated with an increased risk of recurrence. Salvage therapy for AML relapse after allo-HSCT is often limited to chemotherapy, donor lymphocyte infusions and/or second transplants and is rarely successful. Effective post-transplant preventive intervention in high risk AML may be crucial. The most frequent and promising approach is the use of post-transplant maintenance with hypomethylating agents or with FLT3 tyrosine kinase inhibitors when the target is present. Moreover, IDH1/IDH2 inhibitors and BCL-2 inhibitors in combination with other strategies are promising approaches in the maintenance setting. Here we summarize the current knowledge about the preemptive and prophylactic use of pharmacologic agents after allo-HSCT to prevent relapse of AML.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) adds more challenges to the perioperative management of parturients. The aim of this study is to examine perioperative adverse events and hemodynamic stability among COVID-19 positive parturients undergoing spinal anesthesia. This prospective observational investigation was conducted at a tertiary teaching hospital in Jordan between January and June 2021, during which 31 COVID-19 positive parturients were identified. Each COVID-19 positive parturient was matched with a COVID-19 negative parturient who received anesthesia under similar operating conditions as a control group. Of the 31 COVID-19 patients, 22 (71%) were otherwise medically free, 8 (25.8%) were emergency cesarean sections. The sensory level of spinal block after 10 min was T8 (T6–T10) among COVID-19 positive group, compared to T4 (T4–T6) among control group (p = 0.001). There were no significant differences in heart rate, SBP, DBP, and MAP intraoperatively (p > 0.05). Twelve (36.4%) neonates born to COVID-19 positive patients were admitted to NICU, compared to four (11.8%) among control group (p = 0.018). There was no statistically significant difference in postoperative complications. In conclusion, spinal anesthesia is considered a safe anesthetic technique in COVID-19 parturients, and therefore it is the anesthetic method of choice for cesarean deliveries among COVID-19 patients.

A generalized strain energy-based homogenization method for 2-D and 3-D cellular materials with and without periodicity constraints is proposed using Hill’s Lemma and the matrix method for spatial frames. In this new approach, the equilibrium equations are enforced at all boundary and interior nodes and each interior node is allowed to translate and rotate freely, which differ from existing methods where the equilibrium conditions are imposed only at the boundary nodes. The newly formulated homogenization method can be applied to cellular materials with or without symmetry. To illustrate the new method, four examples are studied: two for a 2-D cellular material and two for a 3-D pentamode metamaterial, with and without periodic constraints in each group. For the 2-D cellular material, an asymmetric microstructure with or without periodicity constraints is analyzed, and closed-form expressions of the effective stiffness components are obtained in both cases. For the 3-D pentamode metamaterial, a primitive diamond-shaped unit cell with or without periodicity constraints is considered. In each of these 3-D cases, two different representative cells in two orientations are examined. The homogenization analysis reveals that the pentamode metamaterial exhibits the cubic symmetry based on one representative cell, with the effective Poisson’s ratio v¯ being nearly 0.5. Moreover, it is revealed that the pentamode metamaterial with the cubic symmetry can be tailored to be a rubber-like material (with v¯ ≅0.5) or an auxetic material (with v¯ < 0).

Background: There is a sparsity of data on the use of ethiodized poppy seed oil (EPO) contrast agent (Lipiodol) in patients. We investigated the safety of EPO in children, adolescents, and some adults for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Methods: All patients who underwent procedures with EPO between 1995 and 2014 were retrospectively included. Demographic characteristics, diagnosis, dose, route of administration, preparation of EPO in combination with other agents, and complications were recorded. Results: In 1422 procedures, EPO was used for diagnostic or treatment purposes performed in 683 patients. The mean patient age was 13.4 years (range: 2 months–50 years); 58% of patients were female. Venous malformations (n = 402, 58.9%) and arteriovenous malformations (n = 60, 8.8%) were the most common diagnosis. Combined vascular anomalies included capillary–lymphatic–venous malformations, fibroadipose vascular anomalies (n = 54, 7.9%), central conducting lymphatic anomalies (n = 31, 4.5%), lymphatic malformations (n = 24, 3.5%), aneurysmal bone cysts (n = 22, 3.2%), and vascularized tumors (n = 11, 1.6%). In 1384 procedures (96%), EPO was used in various combinations with sclerosing and embolization agents, including sodium tetradecyl sulfate, ethanol, and glue. The mean volume of EPO used in interventions was 3.85 mL (range: 0.1–25 mL) per procedure with a mean patient weight of 45.9 kg (range: 3.7–122.6 kg) and a weight-adjusted dose of 0.12 mL/kg (range: 0.001–1.73 mL/kg). In 56 procedures (4%), EPO was used as a single agent for diagnostic lymphangiography. The mean volume was 4.8 mL (range: 0.3–13 mL) per procedure with a mean patient weight of 27.4 kg (range: 2.4–79.3 kg) and a weight-adjusted dose of 0.2 mL/kg (range: 0.04–0.54 mL/kg). Procedural-related complications occurred in 25 (1.8%) procedures. The 20 minor and 5 major complications were related to the primary treatment agents. None of them were directly related to EPO. No allergic reactions were noted. Conclusion: The use of an ethiodized poppy seed oil contrast agent in children, adolescents, and adults for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes is safe.

Abstract During the development of the nervous system and regeneration following injury, microtubules (MTs) are required for neurite elongation. Whether this elongation occurs primarily through tubulin assembly at the tip of the axon, the transport of individual MTs, or because MTs translocate forward in bulk is unclear. Using fluorescent speckle microscopy (FSM), differential interference contrast (DIC), and phase contrast microscopy, we tracked the movement of MTs, phase dense material, and docked mitochondria in chick sensory and Aplysia bag cell neurons growing rapidly on physiological substrates. In all cases, we find that MTs and other neuritic components move forward in bulk at a rate that on average matches the velocity of neurite elongation. To better understand whether and why MT assembly is required for bulk translocation, we disrupted it with nocodazole. We found this blocked the forward bulk advance of material along the neurite and was paired with a transient increase in axonal tension. This indicates that disruption of MT dynamics interferes with neurite outgrowth, not by disrupting the net assembly of MTs at the growth cone, but rather because it alters the balance of forces that power the bulk forward translocation of MTs.

A 14-year old boy with anemia due to chronic gastrointestinal bleeding required recurrent transfusion. An extensive non-invasive evaluation that included detection of fresh blood in the small bowel followed by laparotomy with on-table pan-endoscopy (including enteroscopy) was unsuccessful in identifying a bleeding source. After repeat capsule endoscopy at our center confirmed bleeding in the distal small bowel, CT angiography identified a 6-mm focal area of enhancement in the ileum communicating with a distal branch of the superior mesenteric artery. Direct visceral angiography with super-selective arteriography identified a fast-flow vascular malformation supplied by terminal branches of the ileal artery. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed intra-abdominal adhesions and no clear vascular malformation. Initial careful visual and manual examination of the bowel after conversion to laparotomy failed to identify the lesion. On-table retrograde enteroscopy demonstrated a small, pulsatile lesion without ulceration or adherent clot in the mucosa of the proximal ileum. With endoscopic transillumination, a cluster of serpiginous vessels could be seen within the wall of the small bowel. The lesion was resected and pathology was consistent with angiodysplasia. Angiodysplasia is a rare cause of occult, chronic gastrointestinal bleeding in children. A multidisciplinary approach optimizes the likelihood of therapeutic success.

DNA sequencing witnessed significant research efforts to improve its efficiency and to reduce the production cost. Successful DNA sequencing of quick and low cost techniques associate with the personalized medicine as well as procedures and the different genetics subfields of applications. In this article, a novel two-terminal z-shaped sensor is developed and studied to detect the sequence of DNA nucleobases. The z-shaped sensor consists of two metallic zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR), a semiconducting channel made of armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR), and a nanopore in the middle of the channel through which DNA nucleobases are translocated. First-principle modeling and non-equilibrium Green's function along with density functional theory (NEGF + DFT), are utilized to investigate the developed device. Various electronic characteristics are investigated, including transmission spectrum, conductance, and electrical current of DNA nucleobases inside the graphene sensors' nanopore. In particular, these properties are studied with variation of nucleobase orientation. The developed sensor resulted in unique signatures for the individual four DNA nucleobases placed within the nanopore.

Abstract This study characterized the effects of regular green tea (GT) and hot water (HW) ingestion on systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), pulse pressure (PP), and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in two equal, sex‐ and age‐matched groups; Grp1 and Grp2 (n = 100 each; age 53 ± 4 years) of hypertensive patients. Grp1 had regular GT treatment, followed by HW ingestion, whereas Grp2 had HW ingestion followed by GT treatment for periods of 4 months each. Electrocardiographic (ECG) and echocardiographic assessments of LVH were made before and at the end of both periods. SBP was lowered significantly by 6.6%; DBP by 5.1%, and PP by 9.1% by the end of month 4 of GT treatment in Grp1. Upon GT cessation and HW ingestion, SBP, DBP, and PP returned to pretreatment levels over 4 months. In Grp2, SBP, DBP, and PP were reduced insignificantly by 1.5%, 1.0%, and 2.3% by the end of the 4th month of HW ingestion. Conversely, over 4 months of GT treatment, SBP, DBP, and PP were significantly lowered by 5.4%, 4.1%, and 7.7% from the baseline values, respectively. ECG and echocardiographic evidence of LVH was shown in 20% of Grp1 and 24% of Grp2 patients before intervention. This was significantly lowered to 8% and 10% in Grp1 and Grp2 by GT treatment. However, this increased to 16% following HW ingestion in Grp1. HW ingestion did mot induce regression of LVH in Grp2. Thus, regular GT ingestion has cardiovascular protective effects.

The increasing demand for qualitative and varietal foods by the consumer society is a big concern for energy production, and utilization of that energy in a judicious manner for sustainable management of resources is a big challenge in the eminent future. Existing resources (land, water, fertilizer, etc.) and their socioeconomic aspects warrant the farming community to adopt alternative strategies aimed at enhancing the use efficiency of inputs and improve the environmental quality. The adaptability of microbes to thrive in different environments has prompted scientists to introduce microbial intervention in the agricultural processes. Bio-priming has the potential to fulfill many objectives of the modern production system with the use of beneficial microorganisms in an eco-friendly manner. Interestingly, it also plays a crucial role in enhancing the nutrient use efficiency of crops. There is rising evidence of a paradigm shift from the use of a single microbe to a consortium approach for efficient rhizosphere engineering in the context of sustainable agriculture. Our understanding of different signaling cascades, rhizosphere chemistry, and other mechanisms of plant–microbial interactions will frame suitable strategies to harness the best ecosystem services including improved resource use efficiency.

Composite polymer membranes of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were produced in this work. X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrated the formation of Fe3O4 nanoparticles of cubic structures. The nanoparticles were synthesized by a coprecipitation technique and added to PVA solutions with different concentrations. The solutions were then used to generate flexible membranes by a solution casting method. The size and shape of the nanoparticles were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The average size of the nanoparticles was 20±9 nm. Raman spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were utilized to investigate the structure of the membranes, as well as their vibration modes. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated the thermal stability of the membranes and the crystallinity degree. Electrical characteristics of the thin membranes were examined using impedance spectroscopy as a function of the nanoparticles’ concentrations and temperatures. The resistivity of the fabricated flexible membranes was possible to adjust by controlled doping with suitable concentrations of nanoparticles. The activation energy decreased with the nanoparticles’ concentrations due to the increase in charge carriers’ concentrations. Therefore, the fabricated membranes may be applied for practical applications that involve the recycling of nanoparticles for multiple application cycles.

Overwhelming empirical evidence has highlighted the contribution of indiscriminate antibiotic usage (ABU) in food animals to the overall burden of antibiotic resistance (ABR) in humans, thus making antibiotic use the main selective pressure driving antibiotic resistance. The social and behavioral perspective on antibiotic use and resistance in poultry is limited. Our study therefore aimed at obtaining information on antibiotic usage, awareness of ABR, and the attitude and perceptions towards prudent antibiotic usage and ABR. A cross-sectional survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted in 125 poultry farms in Kwara state in December 2019. Most farmers (69.6%, n = 87/125) were aware of ABR and had satisfactory knowledge about ABR with a mean knowledge score of 3.2 ± 1.5. Age (older farmers; OR: 1.1, 95% CI: 1.0, 1.2) and gender (male respondents, OR: 8.5, 95% CI: 3.0, 23.9; p < 0.01) were more likely to have satisfactory knowledge of ABR. Tertiary education was significantly associated with ABR awareness (OR: 4.7; 95% CI: 0.1, 0.7; p = 0.007) and the ABR knowledge level (OR: 7.8; 95% CI: 3.3, 18.7; p < 0.01). Higher flock size was significantly associated with a satisfactory knowledge of ABR (OR: 9.5; 95% CI: 3.8, 23.6; p < 0.01). Most of the poultry farmers (68%) had positive attitudes towards prudent antibiotic use with a mean score of 2.7 ± 0.9. On the contrary, only 32.8% of poultry farmers had a desirable perception of ABR with a mean perception score of 4.9 ± 1.1. The ABR knowledge level was significantly associated with the perceptions of farmers (p < 0.05) but not their attitudes toward ABU and ABR (p = 0.083). There was evidence of unprescribed use of antibiotics in poultry and a failure to observe antibiotic withdrawal periods. These constitute a risk of exposure to unacceptable levels of drug residues from poultry products and an increased risk of ABR. Improving education and communication on antibiotic stewardship programs are crucial to prevent the looming antibiotic threat.

Acetone is a well-known volatile organic compound that is widely used in different industrial and domestic areas. However, it can have dangerous effects on human life and health. Thus, the realization of sensitive and selective sensors for recognition of acetone is highly important. Among different gas sensors, resistive gas sensors based on nanostructured metal oxide with high surface area, have been widely reported for successful detection of acetone gas, owing to their high sensitivity, fast dynamics, high stability, and low price. Herein, we discuss different aspects of metal oxide-based acetone gas sensors in pristine, composite, doped, and noble metal functionalized forms. Gas sensing mechanisms are also discussed. This review is an informative document for those who are working in the field of gas sensors.
