The emergence and zoonotic transmission of poxviruses in the Middle East have been recognized as complex public health issues. Poxviruses, a vast family of DNA viruses, can infect many hosts, including animals and humans. The Middle East has had multiple epidemics of poxvirus infections (e.g., Monkeypox, Smallpox, and Camelpox) that have raised concerns owing to their detrimental effects on livestock, wildlife, and sporadic human cases. This review aims to thoroughly examine the complexity of the epidemiological patterns, intricate genetic diversity, and several contributing factors that support the emergence and zoonotic transmission of poxviruses in the Middle East. Several aspects of poxviruses contribute to the emergence of endemics and zoonotic breakouts, such as the complex nature of human-animal interactions, environmental changes, and their subtle capacity for viral adaptability. This review was compiled in the hopes of contributing to the current understanding of poxvirus biology and its implications for human and animal health in the Middle East. We provide a comprehensive overview of the most common poxviruses in the Middle East, including their classification, structure, replication cycle, pathogenesis, route of transmissions, and of how the Middle East has developed ways to mitigate these biological threats.

Abstract Background Academic achievement is essential for all students seeking a successful career. Studying habits and routines is crucial in achieving such an ultimate goal. Objectives This study investigates the association between study habits, personal factors, and academic achievement, aiming to identify factors that distinguish academically successful medical students. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at the College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The participants consisted of 1st through 5th-year medical students, with a sample size of 336. The research team collected study data using an electronic questionnaire containing three sections: socio-demographic data, personal characteristics, and study habits. Results The study results indicated a statistically significant association between self-fulfillment as a motivation toward studying and academic achievement (p = 0.04). The results also showed a statistically significant correlation between recalling recently memorized information and academic achievement (p = 0.05). Furthermore, a statistically significant association between preferring the information to be presented in a graphical form rather than a written one and academic achievement was also found (p = 0.03). Students who were satisfied with their academic performance had 1.6 times greater chances of having a high-grade point average (OR = 1.6, p = 0.08). Conclusion The results of this study support the available literature, indicating a correlation between study habits and high academic performance. Further multicenter studies are warranted to differentiate between high-achieving students and their peers using qualitative, semi-structured interviews. Educating the students about healthy study habits and enhancing their learning skills would also be of value.

Abstract Background Badminton, a dynamic sport, demands players to display exceptional physical attributes such as agility, core stability, and reaction time. Backward walking training on a treadmill has garnered attention for its potential to enhance physical attributes and optimize performance in athletes while minimizing the risk of injuries. Objective By investigating the efficacy of this novel approach, we aim to provide valuable insights to optimize training regimens and contribute to the advancement of sports science in badminton. Methodology Sixty-four participants were randomized into a control group (n = 32) and an experimental group (n = 32). The control group received routine exercise training, while the experimental group received routine exercise training along with additional backward walking training on the treadmill. Pre- and post-intervention measurements were taken for core stability using the Plank test, balance using the Star Excursion Balance test, reaction time using the 6-point footwork test, and agility using the Illinois Agility test. Abstract Background The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of 24 weeks of moderate aerobic exercise on lipids and lipoprotein levels; Lipo (a) markers, and their association with cognitive performance in healthy older adults. Methods A total of 150 healthy subjects (100 males and 50 females; age range: 65–95 years) were recruited for this study. Based on the LOTCA test score, subjects were classified into two groups: the control group (n = 50) and the cognitive impairment group (n = 100). Cognitive functioning, leisure-time physical activity (LTPA), lipid profile, total cholesterol, TG, HDL-c, LDL-C, and lipo(a) were assessed at baseline and post-24-week aerobic exercise interventions using LOTCA battery, pre-validated Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) version II, colorimetric, and immunoassay techniques, respectively. Results Significant improvements in cognitive function and modulation in lipid profile and lipoprotein (a) markers were reported in all older subjects following 24 weeks of moderate exercise. LOTCA-7-sets scores significantly correlated with physical activity status and the regulation of lipids and Lipo (a) markers. Physically active persons showed higher cognitive performance along with a reduction in the levels of T-Cholest., TG, LDL-C, Lipo (a), and an increase in the levels of HDL-C and aerobic fitness VO2max compared with sedentary participants. Cognitive performance correlated positively with increased aerobic fitness, HDL-C, and negatively with T-Cholest., TG, LDL-C, and Lipo (a). However, a significant increase in the improvement of motor praxis, vasomotor organization, thinking operations, attention, and concentration were reported among older adults. Conclusions The study findings revealed that supervised moderate aerobic training for 24 weeks significantly enhances cognitive functions via mitigating older adults’ lipid profiles and lipoprotein (a). Cognitive performance is positively correlated with aerobic fitness and HDL-C level and negatively with T-Cholest., TH, LDL-C, and Lipo (a).

Abstract The study's goal was to compare and evaluate the benefits of deep friction massage and ultrasonic therapy (US) vs extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for people with lateral epicondylitis. This double-blind, parallel-arm randomized clinical trial was conducted after ethical approval on a sample of 80 subjects with lateral epicondylitis. Participants were enrolled based on predefined eligibility criteria. They were randomly allocated to groups A and B. Group A received ESWT, while Group B received the US combined with deep friction massage. Abstract Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive physical therapy intervention that has emerged in the recent past to address the upswing of osteoarthritis (OA). However, insufficient evidence is present to prove the efficacy of ESWT on grade IV knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The present study aimed to examine the effects of ESWT on functional ability in patients suffering from grade IV KOA. Thirty volunteers aged 45–60 years with grade IV primary KOA diagnosed by an orthopaedic surgeon based on the Kellgren-Lawrence score participated in the study. The participants were equally and randomly divided into two groups (i.e. experimental and control), with 15 participants in each group. The participants in the control group performed conventional physiotherapy (CPT) that included ultrasound therapy, isometric quadriceps, SLR and isometric hip adductor strengthening exercises. The participants in the experimental group received ESWT in addition to CPT. Lower extremity functional scale (LEFS) score was measured before and after the four weeks of intervention. Abstract Background Circulating microRNAs have been implicated in a diverse array of biological and pathological phenomena. Their potential utility as noninvasive biomarkers for screening and diagnosing various diseases has been proposed. Objective This study aimed to explore the potential role of the miRNAs miR-122 and miR-486 as molecular biomarkers in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Thus, miR-122 and miR-486 were detected in the serum of HCV patients and healthy controls. Moreover, the potential correlations of miR-122 and miR-486 with viral complications, such as physical activity, pain, muscle fatigue, and HCV infection, were identified. Methods A total of 150 subjects aged 30 to 66 years were included in this study. The patients were classified as patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (CHC) (n = 110) or healthy controls (n = 40). Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses were performed to determine miR-122 and miR-486 expression. Physical activity (PA), pain score, HCV genotyping, viral overload, aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK), and antioxidant status were also estimated by using prevalidated questionnaires, PCR, and spectrophotometric analyses. Results Compared with those in normal controls, significant increases in the serum levels of miR-122 and miR-486 were reported in patients with CHC. In physically active CHC patients, there was a significant correlation between the expression of miRNAs and increased alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), fibrosis scores, and inflammation activity, but no association was reported for hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA or viral load. Additionally, significant decreases in LDH, CK, GSSG, and pain scores and increases in TAC, GSH, and the GSH/GSSG ratio were reported. Moreover, the expression of miR-122 and miR-486 was positively correlated with changes in body mass index (BMI) and liver fibrosis stage, as well as negatively correlated with sex, PA, TAC, GSH, GSSG, and the GSH/GSSG ratio. Conclusion MiR-122 and miR-486 expression levels were strongly correlated with physical activity, pain perception, and muscle fatigue biomarkers in HCV-infected patients. These miRNA levels were associated with elevated AST, ALT, fibrosis scores, LDH, CK, and antioxidant status, thus suggesting their potential as biomarkers for disease severity and oxidative stress. However, no correlation was observed with viral load or HCV-RNA expression, thus implying that these miRNAs may impact disease progression and symptoms through host factors, rather than directly affecting viral replication. In summary, the results demonstrated that molecular studies of miR-22 and miR-468 and their associations with PA, pain, adiposity, sex differences, and muscle fatigue, as well as routine biomarkers, could be useful as prognostic nanoninvasive biomarkers, thus providing novel therapeutic targets for CHC infection.

تناول هذا البحث ظاهرة الاشتقاق الكبّار في اللغة العربية من الناحية الدلالية المعاصرة، وبيان ما ارتبط به قديمًا وحديثًا، من حيث الأسباب والتفسير والاختلاف، وكذلك معرفة أثره في دلالة الكلمات التي يدخل فيها. وقد اعتمد البحث منهجًا وصفيًا تحليليًا فيه، عبر النظر في البيانات المتعلّقة بالاشتقاق الكبّار قديمًا وحديثًا. ومن أبرز نتائج البحث: أنّ الاشتقاق الكبّار بابٌ مهمٌ من أبواب الاشتقاق. وأنَّ الاختصار والاختزال كانا هدف الاشتقاق الكبّار قديمًا، ثم أصبح أحد عوامل إثراء اللغة العربية، ثم أصبح عنصرًا مهمًّا في الجانب الدلالي للمفردات. كذلك، ساعد النحت على تنمية اللغة العربية وتطورها. إضافةً إلى أنَّ اللغة العربية استطاعت استيعاب المفردات المشتقة اشتقاقًا كبّارًا في بنيتها وأوزانها. كذلك، حقَّق الاشتقاق الكبّار إنجازًا واضحًا بقدرته على التعبير عن معظم المصطلحات والجمل العلمية التي ظهرت حديثًا.

Abstract Peripheral neuropathy and amputation are common complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) that significantly impact the quality of life of the affected individuals. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy, the level of amputation, and the quality of life in patients with DM. This cross-sectional study was conducted after approval of the synopsis involving 225 diagnosed patients with DM on pre-defined eligibility criteria, selected from public sector OPDs, specialized diabetes centres, and centres manufacturing orthotics and prosthetics. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and the administration of the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument and the Asian Diabetes Quality of Life Questionnaire. The level of amputation was recorded for each participant. Data was entered into SPSS, and results were synthesized. Pearson correlation is applied to find an association between gender and the quality of life of the participants, while P ≤ 0.05 will be considered significant. The prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in a sample of 225, based on a self-administered questionnaire, was (44.4%), and in terms of foot examination was (51.1%). As people progressed in age, the prevalence increased to 20.0% in patients above 60 years and 8.9% in ≤ 35 years of age. The majority of participants (56.0%) have had DM for less than five years. Females were 57.8% of the study population, while 97.8% of participants had type II DM. Below-knee amputation of the right limb was observed in 22(9.8%) of the participants. The QoL was poor in the majority of the participants (96.9%) patients with DM (P = 0.638 and T = -0.471). This cross-sectional study highlights a high prevalence of peripheral neuropathy and amputation and poor QoL in patients with diabetic mellitus.

Abstract Pain in the lower back is a major concern in today’s era due to prolonged sitting in two-wheeler riders, mainly due to hamstring tightness. It also creates physical disability and impairment in activities of daily living. The study aimed to compare the efficacy of muscle energy technique (MET) and self-myofascial release (SMFR) using the foam roller on hamstring flexibility, dynamic balance, and physical disability amongst two-wheeler riders with chronic low back pain (LBP). Participants were randomized into two intervention groups, MET and SMFR using the envelope method, with each group having 20 participants. Hamstring flexibility and range of motion for knee extension and the lower back were assessed using the active knee extension test (AKE-L and AKE-R) and sit and reach test (SRT), while the dynamic balance was assessed by the star excursion balance test (SEBT) and physical disability by Roland‐Morris Disability Questionnaire, (RMDQ). Abstract Background This study is based on extensive evidence-based assessments. The aim of this paper is to evaluate how well Jordan’s health information system (HIS) incorporates social determinants of health inequity (SDHI) and to propose suggestions for future actions. Methods An extensive evidence-based assessment was performed. A meta-synthesis of the inclusion of the SDHI in the HIS in Jordan was conducted. After searching and shortlisting, 23 papers were analyzed using Atlas.ti 9.0 employing thematic analysis technique. Results The HIS in Jordan is quite comprehensive, comprising numerous data sources, various types of information, and data from multiple producers and managers. Nevertheless, the HIS confronts several obstacles and fails to ensure the timely and secure publication of available data. The assessment of the inclusion of the SDHI in the HIS showed that the HIS allows for the measurement of progress in relation to social policies and actions but has a very limited database for supporting the inclusion of health inequity measures. One reason for the difficulty in identifying fairness is that certain crucial information necessary for this task cannot be obtained through the available institutional HIS or population survey tools. Additionally, relevant modules for fairness may be missing from population surveys, possibly due to a failure to fully utilize the capabilities of the institutional HIS. Conclusion There are opportunities to make use of Jordan’s dedication to fairness and its already established strong HIS. Some social determinants of health exist in the HIS, but much more data, information, and effort are needed to integrate the SDHI into the Jordanian HIS. A proposal from a regional initiative has put forward a comprehensive set of indicators for integrating SDHI into HIS, which could aid in achieving health equity in Jordan.

In this paper, an improvement for the ϕ6-model expansion method is presented. In this approach, contrary to the classical ϕ6-model expansion method, obtaining explicit solutions for nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations is congenial and undemanding of any constraint conditions, where the method can be applied and used for obtaining solutions without having any conditions on them. Moreover, the new approach is used to obtain new solutions for the new (3+1)-dimensional integrable Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation. We demonstrated that for the same equation, the classical ϕ6-model expansion and the improved ϕ6-model expansion approaches produce the same family of solutions. However, the improved ϕ6-model expansion method is found to be more efficient and convenient.

In current study, Galerkin techniques have been utilized to model the freezing behavior of a cold storage unit. The system features fins and porous foam, enhancing its efficiency in solidifying liquids. Additionally, hybrid nanoparticles have been introduced into the water to improve its conductivity. The energy equation has been augmented with a new term for radiation mode, alongside the source term for freezing. With the goal of determining the amounts of scalars at each node, the model consists of two equations. Mesh adaptation techniques have been employed to accommodate the dynamic nature of the process. Validation against previous data demonstrates good agreement, bolstering the reliability of the simulation. The introduction of porous foam into the domain results in a significant enhancement of the freezing rate, with an increase of about 90.75 %. Furthermore, in scenarios without porous foam, the mixing of nano-powders and a surge in the radiation factor contribute to notable reductions in completion time, with decreases of approximately 12.52 % and 8 %, respectively. By combining all these techniques, a considerable reduction in solidification time can be achieved, amounting to around 91.46 %. This highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach in improving solidification efficiency. By improving the efficiency of cold storage units through these advanced techniques, this research contributes to the sustainable use of natural resources, highlighting the potential for reducing energy consumption and minimizing environmental impact.

Off-grid and grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems with battery storage rely heavily on efficient energy transfer to maximize PV power utilization and battery lifespan. However, existing literature often overlooks the crucial role of energy transfer efficiency in these systems. This paper proposes a novel, fundamental-based PV power flow strategy that addresses this gap by employing a concept of source-load voltage matching. The proposed strategy ensures optimal voltage matching between the PV array and the battery bank. This is achieved by configuring the battery bank voltage range (between nominal and fully charged states) to closely align with the variation in PV voltage at its Maximum Power Point (MPP) across different operating temperatures. This systematic approach requires specifying the DC load voltage, configuring the battery bank, and selecting PV modules with compatible Vmp (voltage at maximum power) parameters. The system utilizes a high-current blocking diode and current limiter for safe connection between the PV array and battery bank. Additionally, the strategy protects against battery overcharge by controlling parallel fans used for PV panel cooling. Experimental results with a 1.62 kW PV system employing lead-acid batteries demonstrate improved efficiency compared to traditional methods. This innovative approach has the potential to significantly enhance energy transfer efficiency, contributing to improved energy sustainability in PV systems.

- The accurate sizing of the inverter, specifically the power sizing ratio (PSR) plays a vital role in maximizing energy production and economic benefits. Existing studies often overlook the complex interplay between maximizing energy capture and minimizing inverter-related economic costs when selecting the optimal PSR. This research presents a techno-economic approach to optimizing the PSR for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems. A simulation model is developed, incorporating real weather data and inverter efficiency curves. The model is calibrated using a Pattern Search Algorithm (PSA) to ensure an accurate representation of real-world inverter behavior by achieving a minimum relative difference of 13.78 % (Norm-RMS) in AC power output. The analysis explores the trade-off between PSR, annual energy yield, and inverter clipping. An optimal PSR of 1.19 is identified, balancing energy capture (up to 2000W inverter capacity) and economic efficiency. This approach promotes cost-effective inverter selection and wider PV adoption.

Gaza's electrical deficit has resulted in the rise of new energy suppliers that sell power from private generators at higher prices. Consumers have challenges because they cannot tell whether their energy originates from the utility or private generators, resulting in unexpectedly large bills owing to a lack of an electronic monitoring system. This study fills this gap by developing a low-cost IoT energy monitoring system that provides real-time information on energy use (hourly, daily, and monthly) to assist consumers in managing their usage and expenditures. An ESP32 microcontroller is used in the system to gather data from energy meters, analyze it, and deliver updates to users via WhatsApp over a secure Wi-Fi connection via the Blynk platform. Experimental findings show that the system accurately captures voltage, current, active power, and cumulative power consumption and transmits this information to customers in real time.

The primary aim of this study is to extend a numerical approach aimed at improving the efficiency of the solidification process. Two key strategies, namely the scattering of nano-powders and the installation of fins, were employed to intensify freezing. By approximating and neglecting the influence of velocity terms, the final equations were streamlined to form a mathematical model. To enhance accuracy, mesh adaptation was integrated with the Galerkin method for solving the model. Various scenarios were examined to assess the impression of both the shape and concentration of nano-powders on freezing. A significant correlation was observed between the concentration of additives and the efficiency of conduction, causing in a decrement in the required solidification time by approximately 32.8 %. Furthermore, modifying the shape of the nano-powders and selecting those with a higher shape factor substantially improved freezing efficiency, resulting in an increase of approximately 10.89 %.

The decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries is crucial for keeping global warming to below $2^{\circ }C$ . Green or renewable hydrogen, synthesized through water electrolysis, has emerged as a sustainable alternative for fossil fuels in energy-intensive sectors such as aluminum, cement, chemicals, steel, and transportation. However, the scalability of green hydrogen production faces challenges including infrastructure gaps, energy losses, excessive power consumption, and high costs throughout the value chain. Therefore, this study analyzes the challenges within the green hydrogen value chain, focusing on the development of nascent technologies. Presenting a comprehensive synthesis of contemporary knowledge, this study assesses the potential impacts of green hydrogen on hard-to-abate sectors, emphasizing the expansion of clean energy infrastructure. Through an exploration of emerging renewable hydrogen technologies, the study investigates aspects such as economic feasibility, sustainability assessments, and the achievement of carbon neutrality. Additionally, considerations extend to the potential for large-scale renewable electricity storage and the realization of net-zero goals. The findings of this study suggest that emerging technologies have the potential to significantly increase green hydrogen production, offering affordable solutions for decarbonization. The study affirms that global-scale green hydrogen production could satisfy up to 24% of global energy needs by 2050, resulting in the abatement of 60 gigatons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - equivalent to 6% of total cumulative $CO_{2}$ emission reductions. To comprehensively evaluate the impact of the hydrogen economy on ecosystem decarbonization, this article analyzes the feasibility of three business models that emphasize choices for green hydrogen production and delivery. Finally, the study proposes potential directions for future research on hydrogen valleys, aiming to foster interconnected hydrogen ecosystems.

Abstract A comprehensive investigation into the green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) has garnered significant attention due to its commendable reliability, sustainability, and environmentally friendly attributes. Green synthesis methods play a crucial role in mitigating the adverse effects associated with conventional approaches employed for nanostructure preparation. This research endeavors to examine the impact of ginger plant extract-assisted green synthesis of metal oxides NPs on the serum ferritin levels of anemic diabetic patients in vitro, focusing specifically on α-Fe2O3 and ZnO NPs. Sixty diabetic volunteers with anemia (35–50 years) and thirty healthy volunteers were enrolled as controls. The assessment was conducted using the VIDAS Ferritin (FER) assay. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy measurements were performed to elucidate the intrinsic and extrinsic transitions of these NPs, affirming the successful formation of α-structured iron oxide. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,2p) level of theory to investigate the geometry optimization and molecular electrostatic potential maps of the NPs. Furthermore, TD-DFT calculations were employed to explore their frontier molecular orbitals and various quantum chemical parameters. The binding affinity and interaction types of ZnO and α-Fe2O3 NPs to the active site of the human H-Chain Ferritin (PDB ID: 2FHA) target were determined with the help of molecular docking. Results unveiled the crystalline structure of ZnO and the α-structure of α-Fe2O3. Analysis of the frontier molecular orbitals and dipole moment values demonstrated that ZnO (total dipole moment (D) = 5.80 µ) exhibited superior chemical reactivity, biological activity, and stronger molecular interactions with diverse force fields compared to α-Fe2O3 (D = 2.65 µ). Molecular docking of the metal oxides NPs with human H-chain ferritin provided evidence of robust hydrogen bond interactions and metal-acceptor bonds between the metal oxides and the target protein. This finding could have a great impact on using metal oxides NPs-ferritin as a therapeutic protein, however, further studies on their toxicity are required. Graphical abstract

A group of new amidrazone compounds that include a quinoline component was produced through the reaction of hydrazonyl chloride, derived from 6-aminoquinoline, with appropriate secondary cyclic amines. The new compounds were confirmed through 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FTIR, and HRMS, and further verified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The antitumor potential of the synthesized compounds was tested against lung cancer (A549) and breast cancer (MCF-7) cell lines. Among the compounds, the ethyl carboxylate and o-hydroxy phenyl piperazine derivatives (10d and 10g) exhibited the strongest activity against both cell lines, with IC50 values of 43.1 and 59.1 μM for the lung and breast cancer cell lines, respectively. Moreover, the most potent compounds were subsequently docked into the c-Abl kinase binding site (PDB code: 1IEP) as a possible anticancer mechanism. In-silico ADMET study shows acceptable pharmacokinetic properties, and the toxicity profile for the most potent compounds is non-carcinogenic.

Background: COVID-19 adversely affects the nutritional characteristics of patients which may negatively impact their quality of life (QOL). The current study determined the association between the nutritional status of COVID-19 patients, its impact on their QOL, and the factors that affected patients' QOL. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Al Madinah Al Munawarah in Saudi Arabia. Patients confirmed with COVID-19 infection by a nucleic acid-positive test and identified as acute severe or acute non-severely ill were enrolled. The World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHO-BREF QOL) was used to assess the patients' QOL, and nutritional status was assessed using the Malnutrition Screening Tool. Demographic characteristics, food intake, and body mass index (BMI) were also assessed. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 28. Results: 515 patients were enrolled, with 391 (76%) having acute non-severe symptoms. Patients (15%) were malnourished and suffered from loss of appetite (32%), low food intake (19.4%) and weight loss (16%). Most patients were satisfied or very satisfied with their health (80.2%), and 76.2% rated their QOL as good or very good. Loss of appetite negatively impacted the physical (p = 0.004, 95% CI 0.086, 0.458) and psychological (p = 0.021, 95% CI 0.034, 0.405) QOL domains. Also, decreased food intake affected patients' physical (p = 0.034, 95% CI 0.018, 0.458) QOL domain. Greater weight loss influenced the psychological (p = 0.005.95% CI 0.002, 0.049) QOL domain. Conclusions: Poor nutritional status among COVID-19 patients was associated with adverse health outcomes and impaired QOL. Nutritional interventions should focus on patients with poor nutritional status or nutrition-related parameters such as weight loss, and loss of appetite which will help improve their QOL.

Cascaded H-bridge 5-level inverters (CHB-5LIs) have gained significant traction in high-power applications owing to their capacity to produce high-quality output voltage with minimal harmonic distortion. However, their intricate architecture presents notable challenges for fault diagnosis, particularly concerning open switch faults. In this study, we propose a deep learning-based approach for diagnosing open switch faults in CHB-5LIs. We present a simulation model of the CHB-5LI with open switch faults and generate a dataset comprising voltage waveforms for various fault scenarios. Leveraging this dataset, we train a Convolutional-1D Neural Network (CNN-1D) featuring a multi-layer architecture comprising convolutional and fully connected layers, culminating in the Softmax function for classification. Our method achieves an impressive classification accuracy exceeding 98 percent on previously unseen fault scenarios, underscoring the efficacy of our approach for CHB-5LI fault diagnosis. Additionally, we conducted a thorough analysis of CNN-1D performance and compared it with traditional and other deep learning models for fault diagnosis techniques. The accuracy of other deep learning models on the generated dataset is as follows: RNN is 88.9 percent, 1D-ResNet is 88.8 percent, and Time Inception model is 89.4 percent. Simulation results showcase that our proposed CNN-1D based approach surpasses other methods in terms of accuracy and robustness, elucidating the potential of deep learning for fault diagnosis in intricate power electronics systems. The fault diagnosis time for the proposed method as a fault diagnosis tool for the simulation case is 0.060 ms, compared to 0.062 ms for RNN and 0.065 ms for ResNet.

Abstract Using material distribution-based topology optimization, we optimize the bandpass design of a loudspeaker cabinet targeting low frequencies. The objective is to maximize the loudspeaker’s output power for a single frequency as well as a range of frequencies. To model the loudspeaker’s performance, we combine a linear electromechanical transducer model with a computationally efficient hybrid 2D–3D model for sound propagation. The adjoint variable approach computes the gradients of the objective function with respect to the design variables, and the Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA) solves the topology optimization problem. To manage intermediate values of the material indicator function, a quadratic penalty is added to the objective function, and a non-linear filter is used to obtain a mesh independent design. By carefully selecting the target frequency range, we can guide the optimization algorithm to successfully generate a loudspeaker design with the required bandpass character. To the best of our knowledge, this study constitutes the first successful attempt to design the interior structure of a loudspeaker cabinet using topology optimization.

This study investigated several factors that may influence driver actions throughout the yellow interval at urban signalised intersections. The selected samples include 2,168 observations. Almost 33% of drivers stopped ahead of the stop line, 60% passed the intersection through the yellow interval, and 7% passed after the yellow interval was complete (red light running, RLR violations). Binary logistic regression models showed that the chance of passing went up as vehicle speed went up and down as the gap between the vehicle and the traffic light and green interval went up. The movement type and vehicle position influenced the passing probability, but the vehicle type did not. Moreover, multinomial logistic regression models showed that the legal passing probability declined with the growth in the green time and vehicle distance to the traffic signal. It also increased with the growth in the speed of approaching vehicles. Also, movement type directly affected the chance of legally passing, but vehicle position and type did not. Furthermore, the driver’s performance during the yellow phase was studied using the k-nearest neighbours algorithm (KNN), support vector machines (SVM), random forest (RF) and AdaBoost machine learning techniques. The driver’s action run prediction was the most accurate, and the run-on-red camera was the least accurate.

Abstract Background MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can control several biological processes. Thus, the existence of these molecules plays a significant role in regulating human iron metabolism or homeostasis. Purpose The study aimed to determine the role of circulating microRNAs and hepcidin in controlling iron homeostasis and evaluating possible anemia among school children. Methods The study was based on a biochemical and cross-sectional survey study that included three hundred fifty school children aged 12–18 years old. RT–PCR and immunoassay analysis were accomplished to estimate iron concentration, Hgb, serum ferritin (SF), soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), total body iron stores (TIBs), total oxidative stress (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and miRNAs; miR-146a, miR-129b, and miR-122 in 350 school adolescents. Results Iron disorders were cross-sectionally predicted in 28.54% of the study population; they were classified into 14.26% with ID, 5.7% with IDA, and 8.6% with iron overload. The overall proportion of iron depletion was significantly higher in girls (20.0%) than in boys (8.6%). MicroRNAs; miR-146a, miR-125b, and miR-122 were significantly upregulated with lower hepcidin expression in adolescence with ID and IDA compared to iron-overloaded subjects, whereas downregulation of these miRNAs was linked with higher hepcidin. Also, a significant correlation was recorded between miRNAs, hepcidin levels, AGP, hs-CRP, TAC, and other iron-related indicators. Conclusion Molecular microRNAs such as miR-146a, miR-125b, and miR-122 were shown to provide an additional means of controlling or regulating cellular iron uptake or metabolism either via the oxidative stress pathway or regulation of hepcidin expression via activating genes encoding Hfe and Hjv activators, which promote iron regulation. Thus, circulating miRNAs as molecular markers and serum hepcidin could provide an additional means of controlling or regulating cellular iron and be associated as valuable markers in diagnosing and treating cases with different iron deficiencies.

Background and Aim: Milk production is an important factor to consider in selecting Awassi sheep. This trait is influenced by various genes that can be managed to boost production. The breeding values (BVs) for milk production in Jordan’s Awassi sheep flocks have been established. This study determined how combined gene variants of BLG, PRL, CSN3, CSN1S1, and CSN2 affect the estimated BVs (EBVs) for milk production in Awassi sheep. Materials and Methods: Milk and blood samples were collected from 391 Awassi sheep, which was then subjected to molecular analysis through sequencing in order to identify potential alleles and genotypes that could be linked to the EBVs of milk. Results: The predicted BVs for milk were significantly influenced by PRL and CSN3 gene variants. Through performing the act of epistasis, the i nteractions of BLG with CSN3 and –CSN1S1 greatly impacted EBVs for milk production. Likewise, the three-way interaction among PRL, CSN3, and CSN1S1, as well as the combined effect of CSN3 with CSN1S1 and CNS1 significantly improved BVs for milk production. When the breeding selection program incorporates the polymorphisms of these genes, gains in milk production can be obtained. Conclusion: Alleles within the examined genomic areas are crucial for evaluating BVs and maximizing genetic gain in milk production.

ABSTRACTThe profitability of wild blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium) production using two alternative mechanical harvesters was evaluated under three different harvester ownership/service arrangements commonly used by farmers. Production data for the economic analysis were obtained from on-farm trials conducted in Nova Scotia, Canada. Net returns were CAD$323 ha−1 using a semi-automatic bin handling system compared with CAD$281 ha−1 for a small box handling system with outright harvester purchase. By comparison, net returns were CAD$90 ha−1 using the semi-automatic bin handling system and CAD$63 ha−1 using the small box system using rental harvesting services. The results are more sensitive to changes in yield than price.

ABSTRACTCurcumin is a phenolic pigment, naturally present in Curcuma longa species. It is a yellow active ingredient and shows a pivotal role in the modulation of biological processes resulting in the prevention of cancer particularly due to its radical scavenging activities. In gastrointestinal cancer cells, curcumin has been shown to induce cell death through apoptosis and to cause cell cycle arrest, down-regulating glycolytic enzyme expressions alongside inhibition of the matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) promoter activity and SDF-1α-induced cell invasion. It also activates the expression of cleaved caspase-3, reduces cell viability, regulates the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax, decreases the number of cells in the proliferative G0/G1 phase and increases the number of cells in the S phase. Additionally, curcumin prevents DNA from replication during the S phase. This review discusses the chemo-preventive role of curcumin and its mechanisms against human gastrointestinal cancers to understand its activity and potential utilization as a therapeutic moiety.

Abstract This study aimed to compare the effects of knee strengthening exercises to those of polyvagal theory–based exercises combined with knee strengthening exercises on selected outcomes in women with grade II knee osteoarthritis (OA). A randomized controlled trial was conducted, in which 60 female participants diagnosed with grade II knee OA, with a mean age of 57.27 ± 7.81 years and knee pain rated between 4 and 7 on the visual analog scale (VAS), were assigned to either the knee strengthening exercise group (Group 1, n = 30) or the polyvagal theory–based exercise plus knee strengthening exercise group (Group 2, n = 30). Pre- and posttreatment assessment of outcome variables, including WOMAC scores (joint pain, joint stiffness, functional limitations, and the overall index), WHOQOL scores (overall quality of life, general health, physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains), and heart rate variability (HRV, time and frequency domains), were analyzed. Group 2 demonstrated significantly greater reductions in joint pain, stiffness, and functional limitations than Group 1 after the intervention. Group 2 presented with significantly improved WOMAC scores, indicating better overall outcomes. Group 2 showed significant improvements in the psychological and social domains regarding quality of life. There were no significant differences in the physical domain or the environmental domain. Group 2 showed a significant increase in high-frequency power (HF) and a significant decrease in the LF/HF ratio, suggesting improved autonomic regulation. A combination of polyvagal exercise and knee strengthening training resulted in superior outcomes compared to knee strengthening exercises alone in women with grade II knee OA. These findings support the potential effectiveness of incorporating polyvagal exercises as an adjunctive intervention for osteoarthritis management.

Abstract Background Complex training is found effective in improving physical performance in various sports. There is a paucity of research evidence comparing the efficacy of complex vs. plyometric training in cricket players. The study aimed to compare the efficacy of complex and plyometric training on physical performance parameters in cricket players. Methods Participants (n = 42 Male; age group = 18–26 years) were randomly allocated into three groups, complex training group (CTG) (n = 14; BMI = 20.51 ± 2.23), plyometric training group (PTG) (n = 14; BMI = 20.57 ± 2.82), and control group (CG) (n = 14; BMI = 20.51 ± 2.23). Abstract Background Vitamin D and calcium-rich foods, exposure to sunlight, and physical activities (PA) play a pivotal role in promoting the production of sufficient vitamin D and improving grip strength needed for better bone health among school children. Purpose This study aimed to determine the effects of hand grip muscle strength (HGS), vitamin D in addition to diets, and PA on bone health status among 6–12 years old schoolchildren. Methods This study was based on a cross-sectional observational design, which was descriptive in nature. A diverse sample of 560 elementary school children aged 6–12 years old were invited to participate in this descriptive cross-sectional study. The Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA), QUS technique, and ACTi graph GT1M accelerometer were used respectively as a valid tools to identify BMD, BMC, and other parameters of bone health like c-BUA values and bone stiffness (SI), and physical activity (PA) of all individuals participated in this study. In addition, a hydraulic dynamometer was used to measure hand grip strength among the participants. Moreover, an immunoassay technique was used to measure the serum levels of vitamin 25(OH)D level, and bone metabolism markers; NTX, DPD, Ca, and sBAP in all participants. Bone loss (osteoporosis) was cross-sectionally predicted in 19.64% of the total population, most of whom were girls (14.3% vs. 5.4% for boys; P = 0.01). Compared to boys, the incidence of osteoporosis was higher and significantly correlated in girls with lower HGS, deficient vitamin D, inadequate vitamin D and Ca intake, greater adiposity, poor PA, and lower sun exposure. Also, in girls, lower vitamin 25(OH)D levels, and poor HGS were shown to be significantly associated with lower values of BMD, BMC, SI, and higher values of bone resorption markers; NTX, DPD, and sBAP and lower serum Ca than do in boys. The findings suggested that deficient vitamin D, lower HGS, adiposity, PA, and sun exposure as related risk factors to the pravelence of bone loss among school children, particularly in girls. In addition, these parameters might be considered diagnostic non-invasive predictors of bone health for clinical use in epidemiological contexts; however, more studies are required.

Abstract Background Psychosocial care is an integral component of holistic nursing practices. This study aimed to examine how fourth-year nursing students at Mutah University perceive various care characteristics, specifically psychosocial care. Methods A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted using the Caring Dimension Inventory (CDI). Data were obtained from 105 nursing students before graduating from a Jordanian public educational institution. Data analyzed using the scoring of CDI and descriptive statistics. Results The mean scores in the professional and technical domain of care were statistically higher for fourth-year nursing students (4.69 ± 0.25). This exceeded their scores in the psychosocial domain of care (3.37 ± 1.20). This suggests that fourth-year nursing students prioritize professional and technical care over psychosocial care. Conclusions Fourth-year nursing students tended to perceive the technical aspects of care as more significant than the psychosocial aspects. This highlights the need for nursing schools and healthcare providers to reconsider their focus and prioritize the importance of psychosocial care.

Objective: To determine the impact of the accelerated rehabilitation protocol on knee pain in amateur athletes with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Design: Two-arm, parallel-group randomized comparative design. Patients: 100 amateur male athletes (mean age22.01±1.79) with ACLR were randomly divided into experimental and control groups (n=50/group). Methods: An accelerated rehabilitation protocol and a conventional one were used for the experimental group. In contrast, only the conventional rehabilitation protocol was used for the control group in five weekly sessions for twenty-two weeks. The primary outcome measure, knee pain, was measured using the visual analog scale (VAS). Extensive test batteries for hop tests, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), and knee effusion were measured, aiming to add more objective criteria to determine functional performance. Results: Both groups (n=50/group) were well-matched (p=0.816), with insignificant differences in their demographic characteristics (p>0.05). The use of computer-based automated approaches and improvements in lung sound recording techniques have made lung sound-based diagnostics even better and devoid of subjectivity errors. Using a computer to evaluate lung sound features more thoroughly with the use of analyzing changes in lung sound behavior, recording measurements, suppressing the presence of noise contaminations, and graphical representations are all made possible by computer-based lung sound analysis. This paper starts with a discussion of the need for this research area, providing an overview of the field and the motivations behind it. Following that, it details the survey methodology used in this work. It presents a discussion on the elements of sound-based lung disease classification using machine learning algorithms. This includes commonly prior considered datasets, feature extraction techniques, pre-processing methods, artifact removal methods, lung-heart sound separation, deep learning algorithms, and wavelet transform of lung audio signals. The study introduces studies that review lung screening including a summary table of these references and discusses the literature gaps in the existing studies. It is concluded that the use of sound-based machine learning in the classification of respiratory diseases has promising results. While we believe this material will prove valuable to physicians and researchers exploring sound-signal-based machine learning, large-scale investigations remain essential to solidify the findings and foster wider adoption within the medical community.

Background. People who are addicted to amphetamines have a much greater chance of developing psychosis compared to those who are not. It is essential to study the behavioral and psychological effects of amphetamines. Therefore, this research aimed to examine conditions such as depression, anxiety, mood, cognitive abilities at the workplace, and social responsibilities by using sociodemographic factors as useful tools in determining effective strategies for preventing, managing, and treating amphetamine addiction. Methods. A cross-sectional study among addicts hospitalized at two rehabilitation centers across Saudi Arabia between May and October 2023. A validated questionnaire consisting of psychiatric disorders assessment tools was distributed to healthcare professionals to start an interview with addicts to assess the abnormalities. The results were compared with healthy people (control). The assessment tools used are Hamilton Anxiety and Depression Rating Scale, Young Mania Rating Scale, and Work and Social Adjustment Scale. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Pearson correlation coefficients (r) were employed. Results. A total of 60 subjects participated in this study. The participants were divided into two groups (n = 60): group I was control (n = 25) healthy volunteers and group II was amphetamine abusers (n = 35), who were hospitalized for detoxification. The ages ranged from 18 to 60 years old with mean ages of 38.68 (±8.14) and 37.77 (±10.95) years in the control and amphetamine groups, respectively. Among the addicts, the mean severity dependence scale value was 10.46 (±1.82), which denotes high dependency on the illicit drug. The prevalence of high levels of anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder was significantly higher among addicts when they were compared to healthy people (control). The assessment of the Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) reflected a higher impairment that minimized their ability to perform the work requirements, home management, social leisure, and relationships. Conclusions. The addiction to amphetamines was associated with high impairment of work performance and social obligations and a negative impact on the addict’s mental health. The risk of suffering anxiety, depression, and bipolar is higher than in nonaddict people. These effects are attributed to brain damage, neurotoxicity, and neuronal inflammation, particularly when these substances are abused over extended periods and at higher doses.

Utilizing simulations based on the Galerkin method, the study has developed and examined the effects of various variables. The utilized tank has been equipped with fin and additives with various shape factor (m) and volume fraction (φ) have been dispersed into water. The denser mesh near the ice front was considered in each time stage involving adaptive grid approach. Also, a validation test was presented to illustrate the precision of modeling. Contours and curves for different ranges of parameters were exemplified in results. The quickest process takes 641.19s while the longest process takes 877.17s. Abstract Background The intricate nature of an athlete's abilities evolves dynamically with the enhancement of motor skills. Hence the study sought to investigate the impact of a tailored four-week exercise program`encompassing exercises focused on balance, agility, and speed. The primary objective was to determine how this exercise program influences both the roller skating talent and overall physical fitness proficiency in young male roller skaters. Methods Thirty male participants (age 11–14 years) enrolled in the school skating team were recruited. The participants were randomized into either an experimental group [n = 15], performing a short-term exercise program, or a control group [n = 15], involved in the physical education classes for eight sessions over four weeks. The primary outcome measure, the skating performance, was measured by the linear speed test (LST). The secondary outcomes, i.e., balance, agility, and speed, were evaluated using the star excursion balance test (SEBT), agility t-test (ATT), and arrowhead change of direction speed test (ACDT). Abstract Background Patients with intellectual disabilities are shown to have a limited capacity for cooperation, communication,and other biological consequences, which significantly require a specialized interest in healthcare professionals worldwide. Aim In this respect, the present study was designed to evaluate the levels mineral elements, and their correlation with oxidative stress markers and adiposity markers; leptin (L), adiponectin (A), and L/A ratio in adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Methods A total of 350 schoolchildren aged (12–18 years) were randomly invited to participate in this prospective, observational study. Only 300 participants agreed to participate in this study. According to Intelligence quotients scores (IQ) measured by WISC-III, the participants were classified into two groups; the healthy control group (no = 180; IQ = 90–114); and the moderate intellectual disability (MID) group (no = 120; IQ = 35–49). Adiposity markers; body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), physical activity scores, adipokines biomarkers; leptin, adiponectin, L/A ratio, oxidative stress, and plasma mineral elements were evaluated by prevalidated questionnaires, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), colorimetric, and immunoassay techniques. Results Intellectual disability of moderate type was reported in 40% of the studied populations most of them are men aged 12–18 years (66.6% for men vs. 33.3 for females). Obesity was shown to be associated with the degree of intellectual disability of the students. There was a significant (P = 0.001) increase in the BMI, WHR, and WHtR scores as obesity markers with poor physical activity (P = 0.01) in students with poor disability compared to healthy controls (HC). The levels of leptin (P = 0.001), adiponectin (P = 0.01), and L/A ratio (P = 0.01) as adiposity biomarkers were significantly increased in students with MID compared to healthy controls. Also, oxidative stress measured by malondialdehyde (MDA) (P = 0.01) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) (P = 0.01) were significantly increased in students with MID compared to healthy control subjects. In addition, mineral elements were shown to be linked with intellectual disability. The data showed that the levels of Fe, Mn, Zn, Hg, Pb, Ca, Cr, Mg, and Ni significantly (P = 0.001) increased, and the levels of Al, Na, K, Cu, and Zn/Cu ratio significantly (P = 0.001) decreased in subjects with MID compared to healthy controls. Correlation analysis concluded that changes in mineral elements significantly correlated with adiposity markers, oxidative stress, and the scores of intellectual disability (WISC III-IQ score). Conclusion The intellectual disability of moderate type (MID) was associated with abnormal changes in the levels of essential mineral elements and adipokines and increased levels of cellular oxidative stress. Thus, evaluating plasma mineral elements and adipokines levels could be a potential diagnostic parameter for diagnosing MID.

Abstract Background Circulating micro-RNAs have been proposed as a new type of biomarker in several diseases, particularly those related to bone health. They have shown great potential due to their feasibility and simplicity of measurement in all body fluids, especially urine, plasma, and serum. Aim This study aimed to evaluate the expression of a set of mRNAs, namely miR-21, miR-24, mir-100, miR-24a, miR-103-3p, and miR-142-3p. Their proposed roles in the progression of osteoporosis were identified using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis in premenopausal women. In addition, their correlations with osteocalcin (OC), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP), and deoxypyridinoline (DPD) bone markers were explored. Methods A total of 85 healthy premenopausal women aged 25–50 years old were included in this study. Based on a DXA scan (Z-score) analysis and calcaneus broadband ultrasound attenuation scores (c-BUAs), measured via quantitative ultrasound (QUS), the subjects were classified into three groups: normal group (n = 25), osteopenia (n = 30), and osteoporosis (n = 30). Real-time-PCR and immunoassay analyses were performed to determine miRNA expression levels and serum OC, s-BAP, and DPD, respectively, as biomarkers of bone health. Results Among the identified miRNAs, only miR-21, miR-24, and mir-100 were significantly upregulated and increased in the serum of patients with osteopenia and osteoporosis, and miR-24a, miR-103-3p, and miR-142-3p were downregulated and significantly decreased in osteoporosis. Both upregulated and downregulated miRNAs were significantly correlated with BMD, c-BUA, OC, s-BAP, and DPD. Conclusion A group of circulating miRNAs was shown to be closely correlated with the parameters BMD, c-BUA, OC, s-BAP, and DPD, which are traditionally used for bone-health measurements. They could be identified as non-invasive biomarkers in premenopausal patients with osteoporosis. More studies with large sample sizes are recommended to estimate the mechanistic role of miRNAs in osteoporosis pathogenesis and to provide evidence for the use of these miRNAs as a non-invasive method of diagnosing clinical osteoporosis, especially in premenopausal patients.

Recent studies for nanofluids, did not pay enough attention to the effect of the nanoparticle size and nanofluid stability on the heat transfer rate. In this study, the thermal conductivity (TC) coefficient of silica/deionized water (DW) nanofluid with various sizes of nanoparticles and various rates of nanofluid stability was investigated. Validation experiments, including X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD), FE-Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), and Zeta Potential (Zp), were carried out to examine the particle sizes and the nanofluid stability. The results illustrated that increasing the temperature leads to the augmentation of the TC coefficient of the SiO2/deionized water in all nanoparticle sizes and all volume concentrations. Also, increasing the volume concentration of the nanofluid leads to the augmentation of the TC coefficient of the nanofluid in all nanoparticle sizes and all temperatures. Eventually, increasing the nanoparticle sizes causes the TC coefficient of the nanofluid to be decreased in all volume concentrations. For the 11 nm nanoparticle size, the amount of the Relative TC (RTC) coefficient enhancement by increasing the temperature was 1.2%, 2.5%, 4.7%, and 6.8% for concentrations of 0.0.1%, 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1%, respectively. For the 50 nm nanoparticle size, this enhancement was from 0.7% to 6.5%, and for the 70 nm nanoparticle size, it was from 0.5% to 5.7%. Finally, Artificial Intelligence (AI) optimization was done to find the optimized size and stability.

This paper deals with the established research trend that seeks to enhance wind turbine generator involvement levels in fast regulation of the grid frequency (inertia emulation) along with traditional power system Alternators. At the beginning, the scattered control objectives in previous studies for wind energy conversion system are gathered in a unified scheme where it portrays an augmented control horizon that assorts different control objectives into levels and layers along with its interconnection. In accordance with that, the recently imposed constraints by the system operator in some countries for shaping the necessary behavior of such wind turbine systems to ensure efficient and reliable power supply is briefly discussed in two operational conditions: normal and abnormal (fault) conditions. The paper then identified four control approaches to supply an inertial response emulation in order to alleviate frequency excursion especially for the first 10 s time frame. These control techniques are namely “Natural Inertia Control,” “Stepwise Inertial Control”, “Virtual Synchronous Machine Control,” and “De-loading Control”. Several forms for each control approach are introduced and discussed in terms of the main principle, general advantages, and disadvantages. Finally, for each control technique and its variants, comprehensive comparisons between the surveyed controllers are presented.

Tobacco and alcohol have been identified as health risk behaviors associated with significant unfavorable health consequences, ranking within the list of the top ten causes of mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALY). The combustion of tobacco leads to the formation of acrylamide (ACR), which is well known for its neurotoxic effects. Similarly, alcohol consumption has also been widely recognized for its neurotoxic effects. Both substances can affect neurons and neuroglia cells through various pathways. This study sought to examine the impacts of co-administration of ACR and intermittent-access ethanol (IAE) consumption over a period of one month. The experimental group received 20 mg/kg of ACR, administered orally, along with IAE of 20% ethanol sessions lasting 24 h, three times per week. The cognitive outcomes were assessed utilizing the elevated plus maze (EPM), which was employed as a means of assessing the capability to learn and remember, the novel object recognition (NOR) test, which was employed to assess recognition memory, and the Y-maze, which was used to explore a new environment and navigate. Additionally, ELISA assays were performed to examine underlying mechanisms, including markers associated with inflammation (NF-κB, PGE2, and TNF-α), apoptosis (Bcl2, Bax, and Caspase-3), and oxidative stress (MDA, catalase, and GSH). These markers were assessed in the brain homogenate as part of the investigation. Furthermore, a histopathological study was conducted. The findings indicated that NF-κB levels increased significantly in the combination of ACR and IAE groups (ACR + IAE) compared to either the ACR-alone or IAE-alone groups. However, parallel changes were observed in TNF-α, PGE2, Bax, Bcl-2, Caspase-3, GSH, and CAT levels when comparing the ACR + IAE group to the ACR-alone group. Comparable alterations were noted between the ACR + IAE treatment and IAE-alone groups in TNF-α, Bcl-2, MDA, GSH, and CAT levels. Moreover, the histopathological analysis revealed significant changes between the ACR + IAE and the ACR- or IAE-alone groups. Regarding memory parameters assessed using tests including EPM, NOR, and Y-maze, considerable changes were observed across all treatment groups as opposed to the control. Surprisingly, there were no notable differences in the NOR and Y-maze tasks between the alone and combination treatment. Further study is necessary to explore the long-term alteration of co-administering ACR and IAE on behavior, memory, and neurotoxicity-related mechanisms, in order to elucidate their combined effects more clearly.

This study employs machine learning (ML) techniques to predict pedestrian compliance at crosswalks in urban settings in Jordan, aiming to enhance pedestrian safety and traffic management. Utilizing data from 2437 pedestrians at signalized intersections in Amman, Irbid, and Zarqa, four models based on different ML algorithms were developed: an artificial neural network (ANN), a support vector machine (SVM), a decision tree (ID3), and a random forest (RF). The results have shown that local infrastructure and traffic conditions influence pedestrian behavior. The RF model, with its excellent accuracy and precision, has proven to be an excellent choice for accurately predicting pedestrian behavior. This research provides valuable insights into the demographic and spatial aspects that influence pedestrian compliance with laws and regulations in the local environment. Additionally, this work highlights the ability of ML algorithms to improve urban traffic dynamics. Policymakers and urban planners, particularly with the rise of theories and trends toward the humanization of urban roads, should firmly establish this understanding among themselves to create environments that make pedestrians safer. This strategy could be a measurable solution for international urban situations if future research focuses on integrating these prediction models with real-time traffic management systems to improve pedestrian safety dynamically.

Nutritional bars (NBs) are gaining popularity among healthy and athletic individuals, but postprandial antioxidative response has not been investigated. Therefore, the current study examined the postprandial alterations in total phenolic content (TPC), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), malondialdehyde (MDA), and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the plasma of healthy individuals after the ingestion of 140 g (510 Kcal) from formulated date-based bars (DBBs) or fruit-based bars (FBBs). Firstly, the free and bound phenolic contents (PCs) were determined to be 10.15 and 12.98 and 6.19 and 3.57 mg GAE g−1, respectively. FBBs were significantly higher in free PC than DBBs, while DBBs were considerably higher in bound PC than FBBs. Secondly, twenty participants with age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), fat mass, and fat-free mass averages of 21.4 years, 170.0 cm, 66.3 kg, 22.9 kg m2, 14.5, and 29.2 kg, respectively, were subjected to metabolic experiments (ISRCTN19386758). Ingestion of 140 g of FBB or DBB resulted in 288.50 or 302.14 µg TPC mL−1 blood, respectively. Postprandial TPC content increased with time progression and peaked after 120 min. T-AOC contents averaged 22.63 and 23.61 U mL−1 before ingestion of FBBs or DBBs, respectively. The T-AOC content increased significantly 120 and 180 min after ingestion of DBBs, while no significant change was noted after consuming FBBs. A significant decrease in MDA content was observed 180 min after consuming DBBs, while no significant change was noted after consuming FBBs. SOD concentrations ranged from 193.99 to 201.07 U L−1 in FBBs and DBBs, respectively. No considerable response was noted up to 3 h after ingestion of FBBs. On the contrary, a significant response was found 120 min after consuming DBBs. Pearson’s correlation coefficient indicated a highly significant positive correlation coefficient (p < 0.01) between T-AOC and either MDA or SOD, as well as between MDA and SOD. The principal component analysis demonstrated a strong and positive relationship between SOD and TPC at 60 and 120 min after DBB ingestion. In conclusion, the relative changes in postprandial responses in T-AOC and MDA did not significantly (p > 0.05) differ between DBBs and FBBs, except for TPC (p = 0.04, paired t-test) and SOD (p = 0.003, paired t-test). Further studies with an extended experimental time are needed to confirm the current findings.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation that can potentially impact any body part. Lymphopenia, abnormal low lymphocyte numbers, are frequently observed in individuals with active SLE. This short review examines the correlation between lymphopenia and SLE. Databases of Scopus, PubMed, Elsevier, Wiley, and Google Scholar were searched for related publicationS. The results showed that lymphopenia is correlated with disease severity in SLE patients. The underlying mechanism is unclear, but it may be due to increased apoptosis of lymphocytes and the autoantibodies production that target lymphocyte surface receptors. Various therapies, including immunosuppressive, corticosteroids, and antiangiogenic agents, have been used for SLE management. However, their efficacy is varied in SLE patients with lymphopenia. These therapies may improve lymphocyte counts and disease vigorousity. Lymphopenia has been found to be linked with several factors in SLE patients, including lupus nephritis, higher steroid doses, cyclophosphamide uses and complement depletion. In SLE, abnormal angiogenesis has been linked to the disease pathogenesis. Thus, angiogenesis therapy for SLE selectively targeted the process of abnormal blood vessel growth that is associated with SLE. In summary, lymphopenia may serve as an indicator of disease severity, however, further studies are required to explore the efficacy of targeted and non-targeted therapies in managing SLE patients with lymphopenia.
