30. Adopting Social Networking Sites (SNSs) as Interactive Communities among English Foreign Language (EFL) Learners in Writing: Opportunities and Challenges

Abstract

As most traditional classroom environments in English as Foreign Language (EFL) still restrict learners' collaboration and interaction in college writing classes, today, the majority of EFL learners are accessing Social Networking Sites (SNSs) as online communities of practice (CoPs) for adopting informal collaborative learning as a way of practicing English beyond the classroom. This study aimed to investigate the opportunities and challenges of SNSs as learning environment in writing in English. The study was conducted among 24 active and regular EFL learners joining the "Only for English Learning Facebook" (FB) CoP--a group developed and maintained by a few instructors in English--for EFL learners coming from different EFL Arab countries. The data was collected from the learners' interactional exchanges in the weekly posted writing activities as well as their responses to online open questions posted by the instructor. Based on the mixed analysis of the data, the quantity of the EFL learners' participation in the writing activities highly increased in the second session. Moreover, the learners were motivated to generate ideas, write their paragraphs and scaffold each other in paragraph writing. The findings also revealed that the EFL participants perceived this CoP as an interactive learning environment that contributed to enhancing their writing by engaging in learner-learner and learner-instructor interaction, information sharing, communicating and socializing with friends and developing a sense of belonging. However, a few challenges faced by the participants in such an online CoP were identified by the participants, and therefore, some valuable assistive features are suggested to be involved in the FB CoP for achieving further EFL development in the future.

Abstract

Road accidents become the most severe problem in traffic accidents nowadays. One of the factors that contribute to the road accident is pedal error. Furthermore, pedal errors due to sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) provide a critical problem among people regardless of age. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the response of emergency braking for one and two-legged drivers using a customized force sensor. A total of 28 participants volunteered in a naturalistic driving test for emergency brakes at the proper car track provided. Prior to that, a short questionnaire was prepared to understand the respondent characteristics quantitatively. In this study, a velostat-based custom force sensor was installed on the test car pedals. The force data was then transferred to the computer via the connecting wire. In order to create an emergency situation, light and audio cues were placed on the car dashboard and connected to the car radio, respectively. When the emergency indicators turn on, the driver will brake immediately while force is exerted on the pedal, and response time is taken promptly. The findings of this study show that the maximum force applied on the car pedals by one-legged is higher compared to the two-legged drivers. Meanwhile, the fastest reaction time for the drivers to apply the brake when there was an emergency situation was 185 ms while the slowest was 320 ms. In conclusion, the pressure sensor developed is promising to use for the natural driving test and can be adapted for other vehicle types and segments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study attempts to compare the difference in negative pressure values using a commercially available phlegm suction device. The device was modified to enhance its suction capability of performing up to 8 cups simultaneously. First, negative pressure was measured using an analogue gauge and the DP-100 vacuum sensor to detect any negative pressure loss. Next, the cupping therapy pressure was measured on a tile floor and on various spots on the body using 8 cups. The results show that there is an insignificant difference in negative pressure readings recorded in the analogue gauge and the DP-100 vacuum sensor, indicating no major loss in vacuum pressure. Using up to 8 cups, the maximum value of the pressure on the floor was measured to be up to -36 kPa, while the maximum pressure on the forearm, calf, and the back of the body measured was up to -48 kPa, -48 kPa, and -50 kPa, respectively. In addition, all data measured on various spots on the body up to 8 cups show that the values meet the minimum negative pressure of -40 kPa required to perform wet cupping. Abstract

The article discussed the development of a driving simulator for pedal error study among Malaysian drivers. Instead of conducting the naturalistic driving study, the driving simulation method is used in this study to investigate the pedal error situation. Several obstacle avoidance tasks are embedded in the driving simulation application developed to determine the driver's foot placement on pedal, also face reaction during normal driving and emergency braking situation. Since the study is primarily concerned with automatic transmission vehicles, a driving simulator that simulates an automatic transmission vehicle has been developed. Malaysian drivers aged between 20 to 65 years old, with minimum of two years driving experience are the targeted participants in this study. In order to conduct the driving simulation study, a driving simulator developed is equipped with instruments such as cameras, screen monitor, steering wheel, and instrumented car pedals with force pressure sensor. Based on the result, the cameras captured the driver's foot placement on pedals and face reaction clearly while driving the simulation car. The instrumented car pedals with force pressure sensor could detect the force applied by the drivers when they stepped on the pedals. The preliminary study shows that the simulation application run smoothly, also it shows the capability of the driving simulator and the driving simulation application developed to perform the driving simulation study for the driver's response during obstacle avoidance task. Abstract

Thermoforming process has now become the most suitable and conventional method for manufacturing 3D circuits with complex geometries. The mold of commercially available automobile lighting LED is developed using CNC machine. The stretchable circuit is printed on a thermoplastic substrate through screen printing technique before undergoing thermoforming process. The factors that affect a thermoformed product are the stretch level and thickness reductions of the substrate. This paper aims to study the effect of the variation in dimensions of the thermoformed product without the printed stretchable circuit on the substrate. Finite element methods (FEM) analysis is also carried out in order to visualize the behavior of the substrate in terms of area stretch ratios (ASR) and thickness reductions of different wall surfaces after deformation according to the geometry of the mold. The ASR and thickness values obtained by experiment and simulation are compared. As a result, the simulated values are bit higher than the experimental ones but they are acceptable, therefore, the behavior of thermoforming product like large stretch areas and less thickness, can be determined prior to the actual thermoforming process of the product with printed stretchable circuit.
