Search

Large-scale magnetic fields are observed off the midplanes of disk galaxies, indicating that they harbour magnetised halos. These halos are crucial to studies of galaxy evolution, galactic-scale outflows, and feedback from star formation activity. Identifying the magnetised halo of the Milky Way is challenging because of the potential contamination from foreground emission arising in local spiral arms. Additionally, it is unclear how our magnetic halo is influenced by recently revealed large-scale structures such as the X-ray emitting eROSITA Bubbles, which, according to previous simulations, might be transient structures powered by the Galactic Center or the Galaxy's star-forming ring. Here we report the identification of several kpc-scale magnetised structures based on their polarized radio emission and their gamma-ray counterparts, which can be interpreted as the radiation of relativistic electrons. These non-thermal structures extend far above and below the Galactic plane and are spatially coincident with the thermal X-ray emission from the eROSITA Bubbles. The morphological consistency of these structures suggests a common origin, which can be sustained by Galactic outflows driven by the active star-forming regions located at 3-5 kpc from the Galactic Centre. These results reveal how X-ray-emitting and magnetised halos of spiral galaxies can be related to intense star formation activities and suggest that the X-shaped coherent magnetic structures observed in their halos can stem from galaxy outflows., Comment: Initially submitted on March 2nd, 2024

Cosmic rays are energetic nuclei that permeate the entire Galactic disk. Their existence requires the presence of powerful particle accelerators. While Galactic supernova explosions may supply the required energy, there is growing evidence that they cannot explain all of the observed properties of cosmic rays, such as their maximum particle energy and isotopic composition. Among Galactic objects, winds from stellar clusters meet the energetic requirement and provide a suitable environment for particle acceleration. The recent detection of some of these objects in gamma rays confirms that they indeed harbor high-energy particles.However, as most supernovae explode inside stellar clusters, it is difficult to distinguish the contribution of winds to particle acceleration. Here we report the detection of young star clusters in the nearby Vela molecular ridge star forming region. The young age of the systems guarantees an unbiased estimate of the stellar CR luminosity free from any supernova or pulsar contamination and allows us to draw conclusions on the acceleration efficiency and the total power supplied by these objects. We demonstrate that much more than 1% of the wind mechanical power is converted into CRs and consequently conclude that a small but non-negligible fraction ~ 1-10% of the CR population is contributed by stellar clusters., Comment: Accepted Manuscript version

HESS J1702-420 is a peculiar TeV complex with a morphology changing from a diffuse (HESS J1702-420B source) at $\lesssim 2$ TeV to point-like (HESS J1702-420A) at $\gtrsim 10$ TeV energies. The morphology and the spectral properties of HESS J1702-420 could be understood in terms of a (diffusive) hadronic or leptonic models in which the observed TeV emission arises correpondingly from proton-proton or IC-radiation of relativistic particles present in the region. In this work we perform searches of the X-ray counterpart of HESS J1702-420B source originated from the synchrotron emission of the primary or secondary relativistic electrons produced within leptonic or hadronic models. Such an emission can be extended and remain beyond the detection capabilities of a narrow-FoV instruments such as XMM-Newton. We utilise the publicly available first 6-months eROSITA dataset (DR1) fully covering selected for the analysis region of $> 5^\circ$-radius around HESS J1702-420. We discuss biases connected to variable plasma temperature/neutral hydrogen column density in the region and present results based on background modelling approach. The performed analysis does not allow us to detect the extended X-ray counterpart of HESS J1702-420 of $0.07^\circ - 3^\circ$-radii sizes. The derived upper limits are significantly higher than the expected hadronic model flux of the X-ray counterpart. For the leptonic model the derived limits indicate the magnetic field in the region $B\lesssim 2\mu$G. We argue, that the further advances in the diffuse X-ray counterpart searches could be achieved either with next generation missions or Msec-long observational campaigns with currently operating instruments., Comment: accepted to A&A

The brightest gamma ray burst (GRB) ever observed, GRB221009A, produced a surprisingly large flux of gamma rays with multi-TeV energies, which are expected to be absorbed in interactions with extragalactic background light (EBL). If the highest energy gamma rays were produced at the source, their spectral shape would have to exhibit a nonphysical spike even for the lowest levels of EBL. We show that, for widely accepted models of EBL, the data can be explained by secondary gamma rays produced in cosmic ray interactions along the line of sight, as long as the extragalactic magnetic fields (EGMFs) are $10^{-16}$G or smaller, assuming 1 Mpc correlation length. Our interpretation supports the widely held expectation that GRB jets can accelerate cosmic rays to energies as high as 10 EeV and above, and it has implications for understanding the magnitudes of EGMFs., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Ultrarelativistic particles called cosmic rays permeate the Milky Way, propagating through the Galactic turbulent magnetic fields. The mechanisms under which these particles increase their energy can be reasonably described by current theories of acceleration and propagation of cosmic rays. There are, however, still many open questions as to how to reach petaelectronvolt (PeV) energies, the maximum energy believed to be attained in our Galaxy, and in which astrophysical sources (dubbed {\it PeVatrons}) this ultra-high energy acceleration happens. In this article, we describe the theoretical conditions for plasma acceleration to these energies, and the Galactic sources in which these conditions are possible. These theoretical predictions are then confronted with the latest experimental results, summarising the state-of-the-art of our current knowledge of PeVatrons. HESS J1641-463 is an unidentified gamma-ray source with a hard TeV gamma-ray spectrum, and thus it has been proposed to be a possible candidate for cosmic ray (CR) accelerators up to PeV energies (a PeVatron candidate). The source spatially coincides with the radio supernova remnant (SNR) G338.5+0.1, but has not yet been fully explored in the X-ray band. We analyzed newly taken NuSTAR data, pointing at HESS J1641-463, with 82 ks effective exposure time. There is no apparent X-ray counterpart of HESS J1641-463, while nearby stellar cluster, Mercer 81, and stray-light X-rays are detected. Combined with the archival Chandra data, partially covering the source, we derived an upper limit of $\sim 6\times 10^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in 2-10 keV ($\sim 3\times 10^{-13}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in 10-20 keV). If the gamma-ray emission is originated from decay of $\pi^0$ mesons produced in interactions between CR protons and ambient materials, secondary electrons in the proton-proton interactions can potentially emit synchrotron photons in the X-ray band, which can be tested by our X-ray observations. De-excitation gamma-ray lines, produced by nuclei colliding with protons, provide information about astrophysical environments where particles have kinetic energies of $10-100$ MeV per nucleon. In general, such environments can be categorized into two types: the interaction between non-thermal MeV cosmic rays and ambient gas, and the other is thermal plasma with a temperature above a few MeV. In this paper, we focus on the latter type and investigate the production of de-excitation gamma-ray lines in very hot thermal plasma, especially the dependence of the line profile on the plasma temperature. We have calculated the line profile of prompt gamma rays from $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O and found that when nuclei have a higher temperature than protons, gamma-ray line profiles can have a complex shape unique to each nucleus species. This is caused by anisotropic gamma-ray emission in the nucleus rest frame. We propose that the spectroscopy of nuclear de-excitation gamma-ray lines may enable to probe energy distribution in very hot astrophysical plasmas. This diagnostics can be a new and powerful technique to investigate the physical state of a two-temperature accretion flows onto a black hole, especially the energy distributions of the protons and nuclei, which are difficult to access for any other diagnostics., Comment: 12 pages, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We explore the implications of the light curve of the early TeV gamma-ray afterglow of GRB221009A reported by the LHAASO collaboration. We show that the reported offset of the reference time, $T_*$, allows the determination of the relativistic jet activation time, which occurs approximately $200\,\mathrm{s}$ after the GBM trigger time and closely precedes the moment at which GBM was saturated. We find that while the LHAASO data do not exclude the homogeneous circumburst medium scenario, the progenitor wind scenario looks preferable, finding excellent agreement with the expected size of the stellar bubble. We conclude that the initial growth of the light curve is dominated by processes internal to the jet or by gamma-gamma attenuation on the photons emitted during the prompt phase. Namely, either the activation of the acceleration process or the decrease of internal gamma-gamma absorption can naturally explain the initial rapid flux increase. The subsequent slow flux growth phase observed up to $T_*+18\,\mathrm{s}$ is explained by the build-up of the synchrotron radiation -- the target for inverse Compton scattering, which is also supported by a softer TeV spectrum measured during this period. The duration of this phase allows an almost parameter-independent determination of the jet's initial Lorentz factor, $\Gamma_0\approx600$, and magnetic field strength, $B'\sim0.3\,\mathrm{G}$. HESS J1702-420 is a multi-TeV gamma-ray source with an unusual energy-dependent morphology. The recent H.E.S.S. observations suggest that the emission is well described by a combination of point-like HESS J1702-420A (dominating at highest energies, $\gtrsim$ 30 TeV ) and diffuse ($\sim$ 0.3$^\circ$) HESS J1702-420B (dominating below $\lesssim$ 5TeV) sources with very hard (${\Gamma} \sim 1.5$) and soft (${\Gamma}$ ~2.6) power-law spectra, respectively. Here we propose a model which postulates that the proton accelerator is located at the position of HESS J1702-420A and is embedded into a dense molecular cloud that coincides with HESS J1702-420B. In the proposed model, the VHE radiation of HESS J1702-420 is explained by the pion-decay emission from the continuously injected relativistic protons propagating through a dense cloud. The energy-dependent morphology is defined by the diffusive nature of the low-energy protons propagation, transiting sharply to (quasi) ballistic propagation at higher energies. Adopting strong energy dependence of the diffusion coefficient, $D \propto E^\beta$ with $\beta \geq 1$, we argue that HESS J1702-420 as the system of two gamma-ray sources is the result of the propagation effect. Protons injected by a single accelerator at the rate $Q_0 \simeq 10^{38} \, (n_0/100 \, \rm cm^{-3})^{-1}\, (d/ \, 0.25\,kpc)^{-1} \rm erg/s$ can reasonably reproduce the morphology and fluxes of two gamma-ray components., Comment: accepted to ApJ

Relativistic electrons are an essential component in many astrophysical sources, and their radiation may dominate the high-energy bands. Inverse Compton (IC) emission is the radiation mechanism that plays the most important role in these bands. The basic properties of IC, such as the total and differential cross sections, have long been studied; the properties of the IC emission depend strongly not only on the emitting electron distribution but also on the properties of the target photons. This complicates the phenomenological studies of sources, where target photons are supplied from a broad radiation component. We study the spectral properties of IC emission generated by a power-law distribution of electrons on a power-law distribution of target photons. We approximate the resulting spectrum by a broken-power-law distribution and show that there can be up to three physically motivated spectral breaks. If the target photon spectrum extends to sufficiently low energies, $\varepsilon_{\mathrm{min}}< m_e^2c^4/E_{\mathrm{max}}$ ($m_e$ and $c$ are electron mass and speed of light, respectively; $\varepsilon_{\mathrm{min}}$ and $E_{\mathrm{max}}$ are the minimum/maximum energies of target photons and electrons, respectively), then the high energy part of the IC component has a spectral slope typical for the Thomson regime with an abrupt cutoff close to $E_{\mathrm{max}}$. The spectra typical for the Klein-Nishina regime are formed above $m_e^2c^4/\varepsilon_{\mathrm{min}}$. If the spectrum of target photons features a cooling break, i.e., a change of the photon index by $0.5$ at $\varepsilon_{\mathrm{br}}$, then the transition to the Klein-Nishina regime proceeds through an intermediate change of the photon index by $0.5$ at $m_e^2c^4/\varepsilon_{\mathrm{br}}$., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

MeV nuclear de-excitation lines serve as a unique tool to study low-energy cosmic rays (CRs), containing both spectral and elemental information of the interacting material. In this paper, we estimated the possible nuclear de-excitation lines from the young supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. Given different CR spectral shapes and interacting materials, we found the predicted fluxes of strong narrow line emissions from the remnant are highly model-dependent, ranging from about $1\times10^{-10}\,{\rm \,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$ to $1\times10^{-6}\, {\rm \,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$ for the 4.44 MeV narrow line and from about $4\times10^{-11}\,{\rm \,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$ to $2\times10^{-7}{\rm \,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$ for the 6.13 MeV narrow line, respectively. Electron Compton scattering of target photons into the gamma-ray energy band (inverse Compton scattering --IC--) is commonly expected to dominate the very high energy spectra in gamma-ray bursts especially during the afterglow phase. For sufficiently large center-of-mass energies in these collisions, the effect of the electron recoil starts reducing the scattering cross section (the Klein-Nishina regime). The IC spectra generated in the Klein-Nishina regime is softer and has a smaller flux level compared to the synchrotron spectra produced by the same electrons. The detection of afterglow emission from nearby GRB 190819A in the very high energy (VHE) domain with H.E.S.S. has revealed an unexpected feature: the slope of the VHE spectrum matches well the slope of the X-ray spectra, despite expectations that for the IC production process, the impact of the Klein-Nishina effect should be strong. The multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution appears to be inconsistent with predictions of one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton models. We study the possible impact of two-zone configuration on the properties of IC emission when the magnetic field strength differs considerably between the two zones. Synchrotron photons from the strong magnetic field zone provide the dominant target for cooling of the electrons in the weak magnetic field zone, which results in a formation of hard electron distribution and consequently of a hard IC emission. The density of cosmic rays inside molecular clouds determines the ionization rate in the dense cores where stars form. It is also one of the drivers of astrochemistry leading to the creation of complex molecules. Through Fermi Large Area Telescope observations of nearby giant molecular clouds, we observed deficits (holes) in the gamma-ray residual map when modelling with the expected gamma-ray diffuse emission from uniform cosmic rays interacting with the molecular content. We propose that the deficit is due to the lack of penetration of the low-energy (sub-GeV to GeV) cosmic rays into denser regions or clumps. This differs from the prevailing view of fast cosmic ray transport in giant molecular clouds where the magnetic turbulence is suppressed by neutral-ion damping, as our results require a slow diffusion inside dense molecular clumps. Through modelling we find that while the shielding is negligible on the cloud scale, it becomes important in the denser, parsec-sized regions where the gravitational collapse is already at play, changing the initial condition of star formation and astrochemistry., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy

The current generation of very-high-energy $gamma-$ray (VHE; E above 30 GeV) detectors (MAGIC and H.E.S.S.) have recently demonstrated the ability to detect the afterglow emission of GRBs. However, the GRB prompt emission, typically observed in the 10 keV-10 MeV band, has so far remained undetected at higher energies. Here, we investigate the perspectives of multi-messenger observations to detect the prompt emission of short GRBs in VHE. Considering binary neutron star mergers as progenitors of short GRBs, we evaluate the joint detection efficiency of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observing in synergy with the third generation of gravitational wave detectors, such as the Einstein Telescope (ET) and Cosmic Explorer (CE). In particular, we evaluate the expected capabilities to detect and localize gravitational wave events in the inspiral phase and to provide an early warning alert able to drive the VHE search. We compute the amount of possible joint detections by considering several observational strategies, and demonstrate that the sensitivities of CTA make the detection of the VHE emission possible even if it is several orders fainter than the one observed at 10 keV-10 MeV. X-ray observations of several kiloparsec-scale extragalactic jets favour a synchrotron origin. The short cooling times of the emitting electrons requires distributed acceleration of electrons up to sub-PeV energies. In a previous paper, we found that this can be self-consistently explained by a shear acceleration model, where particles are accelerated to produce power-law spectra with a spectral index being determined mainly by the velocity profile and turbulence spectrum. In this paper, we perform 3D relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic simulations to investigate the formation of a spine-sheath structure and the development of turbulence for a relativistic jet propagating into a static cocoon. We explore different spine velocities and magnetic field profiles with values being chosen to match typical Fanaroff-Riley type I/II jets. We find that in all cases a sheath is generated on the interface of the spine and the cocoon mainly due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The large scale velocity profile in the sheath is close to linear. Turbulence develops in both the spine and the sheath, with a turbulent velocity spectrum consistent with Kolmogorov-scaling. We critically assess limits on the maximum energy of protons accelerated within superbubbles around massive stellar clusters, considering a number of different scenarios. In particular, we derive under which circumstances acceleration of protons above peta-electronvolt (PeV) energies can be expected. While the external forward shock of the superbubble may account for acceleration of particles up to 100 TeV, internal primary shocks such as supernova remnants expanding in the low density medium or the collective wind termination shock which forms around a young compact cluster provide more favourable channels to accelerate protons up to 1 PeV, and possibly beyond. Under reasonable conditions, clustered supernovae launching powerful shocks into the magnetised wind of a young and compact massive star cluster are found to be the most promising systems to accelerate protons above 10 PeV. On the other hand, stochastic re-acceleration in the strongly turbulent plasma is found to be much less effective than claimed in previous works, with a maximum proton energy of at most a few hundred TeV., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We present a broadband X-ray study of W50 (`the Manatee nebula'), the complex region powered by the microquasar SS 433, that provides a test-bed for several important astrophysical processes. The W50 nebula, a Galactic PeVatron candidate, is classified as a supernova remnant but has an unusual double-lobed morphology likely associated with the jets from SS 433. Using NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, and Chandra observations of the inner eastern lobe of W50, we have detected hard non-thermal X-ray emission up to $\sim$30 keV, originating from a few-arcminute size knotty region (`Head') located $\lesssim$ 18$^{\prime}$ (29 pc for a distance of 5.5 kpc) east of SS 433, and constrain its photon index to 1.58$\pm$0.05 (0.5-30 keV band). The index gradually steepens eastward out to the radio `ear' where thermal soft X-ray emission with a temperature $kT$$\sim$0.2 keV dominates. The hard X-ray knots mark the location of acceleration sites within the jet and require an equipartition magnetic field of the order of $\gtrsim$12$\mu$G. The unusually hard spectral index from the `Head' region challenges classical particle acceleration processes and points to particle injection and re-acceleration in the sub-relativistic SS 433 jet, as seen in blazars and pulsar wind nebulae., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The Fermi Bubbles are giant, gamma-ray emitting lobes emanating from the nucleus of the Milky Way discovered in ~1-100 GeV data collected by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. Previous work has revealed substructure within the Fermi Bubbles that has been interpreted as a signature of collimated outflows from the Galaxy's super-massive black hole. Here we show via a spatial template analysis that much of the gamma-ray emission associated to the brightest region of substructure -- the so-called cocoon -- is likely due to the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr dSph) galaxy. This large Milky Way satellite is viewed through the Fermi Bubbles from the position of the Solar System. As a tidally and ram-pressure stripped remnant, the Sgr dSph has no on-going star formation, but we nevertheless demonstrate that the dwarf's millisecond pulsar (MSP) population can plausibly supply the gamma-ray signal that our analysis associates to its stellar template. The measured spectrum is naturally explained by inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons by high-energy electron-positron pairs injected by MSPs belonging to the Sgr dSph, combined with these objects' magnetospheric emission. This finding plausibly suggests that MSPs produce significant gamma-ray emission amongst old stellar populations, potentially confounding indirect dark matter searches in regions such as the Galactic Centre, the Andromeda galaxy, and other massive Milky Way dwarf spheroidals., Comment: Updated to match version accepted for publication in Nature Astronomy (2022). 14 pages main text, 3 main figures, 7 extended data figures. The recent discovery of a new population of ultra-high-energy gamma-ray sources with spectra extending beyond 100 TeV revealed the presence of Galactic PeVatrons - cosmic-ray factories accelerating particles to PeV energies. These sources, except for the one associated with the Crab Nebula, are not yet identified. With an extension of 1 degree or more, most of them contain several potential counterparts, including Supernova Remnants, young stellar clusters and Pulsar Wind Nebulae (PWNe), which can perform as PeVatrons and thus power the surrounding diffuse ultra-high energy gamma-ray structures. In the case of PWNe, gamma rays are produced by electrons, accelerated at the pulsar wind termination shock, through the inverse Compton scattering of 2.7 K CMB radiation. The high conversion efficiency of pulsar rotational power to relativistic electrons, combined with the short cooling timescales, allow gamma-ray luminosities up to the level of $L_\gamma \sim 0.1 \dot{E}$. The pulsar spin-down luminosity, $\dot E$, also determines the absolute maximum energy of individual photons: $E_{\rm \gamma~\rm max}\approx 0.9 \dot E_{36}^{0.65}~~\rm{PeV}$. This fundamental constraint dominates over the condition set by synchrotron energy losses of electrons for young PWNe with typical magnetic field of $\approx$100$\mu$G with $\dot{E} \lesssim 10^{37}\ \rm erg/s$. We discuss the implications of $E_{\rm \gamma~\rm max}$ by comparing it with the highest energy photons reported by LHAASO from a dozen of ultra-high-energy sources. Cosmic Rays (CRs) propagating through dense molecular clouds (MCs) produce gamma rays which carry direct information about the CR distribution throughout the Galaxy. Observations of gamma rays in different energy bands allow exploration of the average CR density in the Galactic Disk, the so-called level of the "CR Sea". Fermi-LAT observations have demonstrated the method's feasibility based on two dozen MCs in our Galaxy. However, the potential of Fermi-LAT is limited by the most massive and relatively nearby MCs; thus, the current observations cover only a tiny fraction of the Milky Way. In this paper, we study the prospects of expanding the CR measurements to very and ultra-high energies and remote parts of the Galaxy with the current and next-generation detectors. Based on calculations of fluxes expected from MCs, we formulate the requirements to the sensitivity of the post-Fermi-LAT detectors to map GeV-TeV CRs in the Galactic Disk. We also explore the potential of the current and future air-shower and atmospheric Cherenkov telescope arrays for the extension of CR studies to multi-TeV and PeV energy bands. We demonstrate that the improvement of the Fermi-LAT sensitivity by a factor of a few would allow a dramatic increase in the number of detectable MCs covering almost the entire Galaxy. Galaxy clusters can be sources of high-energy (HE) $\gamma$-ray radiation, due to the efficient acceleration of particles exceeding EeV energies. At present, though, the only candidate for emitting HE $\gamma$-rays is the Coma cluster, towards which an excess of $\gamma$-ray emission has been detected by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Using $\mathrm{\sim12.3}$ years of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data, we explored the region of the Coma cluster between energies 100 MeV and 1 TeV by detailed spectral and morphological analysis. In the region of the Coma cluster, we detected diffuse gamma-ray emission of energies between 100 MeV and 1 TeV with a 5.4$\sigma$ extension significance and a 68\% containment radius of $0.82^{+0.10}_{-0.05}$ degrees derived with a 2D homogeneous disk model. The corresponding gamma-ray spectrum extends up to $\sim50$ GeV, with a power-law index of $\mathrm{\Gamma=2.23\pm0.11}$ and flux of $\mathrm{(3.84\pm0.67)\times10^{-12}\,erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. Using energy arguments we show that point-like sources such as radiogalaxies and star-forming galaxies are unlikely to explain the emission, and more likely, the emission is produced in the Coma cluster. Besides, we also identified three point-like sources in the region. However, due to the limited statistics of the detection, we could neither exclude nor conclude that the total extended emission is contributed to by these three-point like sources., Comment: Submitted in MNRAS

The active galactic nucleus 4C +28.07 is a flat spectrum radio quasar, one of the brightest at $\gamma$-ray energies. We study its multi-wavelength emission by analysing $\sim12.3$ years of \textit{Fermi-LAT} data in the $\gamma$-ray band and \textit{Swift-XRT/UVOT} available data in X-ray and Optical-to-Ultraviolet bands. In the $\gamma$-ray band, five flaring periods have been detected, during which the flux dramatically increases by several times (>5) compared with its average quiescent phase. Quasi-simultaneously with the flaring times, the X-ray and UVOT data detected by \textit{Swift-XRT/UVOT} have also been analysed. In one of the brightest flare periods (Flare 5; observed on Oct 12, 2018) the $\gamma$-ray flux reached $(6.7\pm0.81)\times 10^{-6}$ photon/cm^2/s ($\sim31\times$ higher than the mean flux over 12.3 years) with detection significance of $\sigma=6.1$. The apparent $\gamma$-ray luminosity of this flaring corresponds to $3.6\times10^{49}$ erg/s (for a distance of 8.38 Gpc), one of the highest $\gamma$-ray luminosities observed for blazars. Flare 5 has an estimated $\sim2$ hours time block, which can be considered the average $\gamma$-ray variability time. The variability time constrains the $\gamma$-ray emitting region size to <9e14 cm, which is close to the black hole radius. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the $\gamma$-ray band for the $\sim12.3$ years of data show an early cut-off at $\sim14$ GeV; beyond $\sim60$ GeV, however, the spectrum hardens and is detected up to $\sim316$ GeV. Similar spectral behaviour is also noticeable for the SEDs of flares, which can be linked to the photon absorption by the emitting region's internal and external narrow-band radiation fields. Star-forming regions have been proposed as potential Galactic cosmic-ray accelerators for decades. Cosmic ray acceleration can be probed through observations of gamma-rays produced in inelastic proton-proton collisions, at GeV and TeV energies. We analyze more than 11 years of Fermi-LAT data from the direction of Westerlund 2, one of the most massive and best-studied star-forming regions in our Galaxy. The spectral and morphological characteristics of the LAT source agree with the ones in the TeV regime (HESS J1023-575), allowing the description of the gamma-ray source from a few hundreds of MeV to a few tens of TeVs. The HAWC Collaboration has reported the detection of an extended $\gamma$-ray emission around the Geminga and Monogem pulsars of a few degree extension. Very recently, the LHAASO Collaboration released also the data for an extended $\gamma$-ray emission around the pulsar PSR J0622+3749. This flux can be explained with electrons and positrons injected from these sources and their inverse Compton Scattering on the interstellar radiation fields. So far the size of such $\gamma-$ray halos has been interpreted as the result of the diffusion coefficient around the sources being about two orders of magnitude smaller than the average in the Galaxy. However, this conclusion is driven by the assumption that particles propagate diffusively right away after the injection without taking into account the ballistic propagation. The propagation of cosmic-ray leptons in the proximity of the Geminga, Monogem and PSR J0622+3749 pulsars is examined here considering the transition from the quasi-ballistic, valid for the most recently injected particles, to the diffusive transport regime. For typical interstellar values of the diffusion coefficient, the quasi-ballistic regime dominates the lepton distribution up to distances of a few tens of parsec from the pulsar for particle energies above $\sim 10$ TeV. In this regime the resulting $\gamma-$ray source tends to be rather compact, despite particles travel a long distance. Indeed, for larger values of the diffusion coefficient, particles propagate ballistically up to larger distances with the result of a more point-like $\gamma-$ray source. When such transition is taken into account, a good fit to the HAWC and LHAASO $\gamma-$ray data around Geminga, Monogem and PSR J0622+3749 is obtained without the need to invoke a strong suppression of the diffusion coefficient., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Star-forming regions have been proposed as potential Galactic cosmic-ray accelerators for decades. Cosmic-ray acceleration can be probed through observations of gamma-rays produced in inelastic proton-proton collisions, at GeV and TeV energies. In this paper, we analyze more than 11 years of Fermi-LAT data from the direction of Westerlund 2, one of the most massive and best-studied star-forming regions in our Galaxy. In particular, we investigate the characteristics of the bright pulsar PSR J1023-5746 that dominates the gamma-ray emission below a few GeV at the position of Westerlund 2, and the underlying extended source FGES J1023.3-5747. The analysis results in a clear identification of FGES J1023.3-5747 as the GeV counterpart of the TeV source HESS J1023-575, through its morphological and spectral properties. This identification provides new clues about the origin of the HESS J1023-575 gamma-ray emission, favouring a hadronic origin of the emission, powered by Westerlund 2, rather than a leptonic origin related to either the pulsar wind nebula associated with PSR J1023-5746 or the cluster itself. This result indirectly supports the hypothesis that star-forming regions can contribute to the cosmic-ray sea observed in our Galaxy, Comment: In press in MNRAS

X-ray observations of kilo-parsec scale jets indicate that a synchrotron origin of the sustained non-thermal emission is likely. This requires distributed acceleration of electrons up to near PeV energies along the jet. The underlying acceleration mechanism is still unclear. Shear acceleration is a promising candidate, as velocity-shear stratification is a natural consequence of the collimated flow of a jet. We study the details of shear acceleration by solving the steady-state Fokker-Planck-type equation and provide a simple general solution for trans-relativistic jets for a range of magnetohydrodynamic turbulent power-law spectra. In general, the accelerated particle population is a power-law spectrum with an exponential-like cut-off, where the power-law index is determined by the turbulence spectrum and the balance of escape and acceleration of particles. Adopting a simple linearly decreasing velocity profile in the boundary of large-scale jets, we find that the multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution of X-ray jets, such as Centaurus A and 3C 273, can be reproduced with electrons that are accelerated up to $\sim$ PeV. In kpc-scale jets, protons may be accelerated up to $\sim$ EeV, supporting the hypothesis that large-scale jets are strong candidates for ultra-high-energy-cosmic-ray sources within the framework of shear acceleration., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRAS

The galactic diffuse $\gamma$-ray emission, as seen by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT), shows a sharp peak in the region around 4 kpc from the Galactic center, which can be interpreted either as due to an enhanced density of cosmic-ray accelerators or to a modification of the particle diffusion in that region. Observations of $\gamma$-rays originating in molecular clouds are a unique tool to infer the cosmic-ray density point by point, in distant regions of the Galaxy. We report here the analysis of 11 yr Fermi-LAT data, obtained in the direction of nine molecular clouds located in the 1.5--4.5 kpc region. The cosmic-ray density measured at the locations of these clouds is compatible with the locally measured one. We demonstrate that the cosmic-ray density gradient inferred from the diffuse gamma-ray emission is the result of the presence of cosmic-ray accelerators rather than a global change of the sea of Galactic cosmic rays due to their propagation.

Low-energy cosmic rays (LECRs) contribute substantially to the energy balance of the interstellar medium. They play also significant role in the heating and chemistry of gas, and, consequently, on the star formation process. Because of the slow propagation coupled with enhanced energy losses of subrelativistic particles, LECRs are concentrated around their acceleration sites. LECRs effectively interact with the ambient gas through nuclear reactions. Although these processes are energetically less effective compared to heating and ionization, they are extremely important from the point of view of nuclear de-excitation lines, which carry unique information about LECRs. Cutoff energy in a synchrotron radiation spectrum of a supernova remnant (SNR) contains a key parameter of ongoing particle acceleration. We systematically analyze 11 young SNRs, including all historical SNRs, to measure the cutoff energy, thus shedding light on the nature of particle acceleration at the early stage of SNR evolution. The nonthermal (synchrotron) dominated spectra in filament-like outer rims are selectively extracted and used for spectral fitting because our model assumes that accelerated electrons are concentrated in the vicinity of the shock front due to synchrotron cooling. The cutoff energy parameter ($\varepsilon_0$) and shock speed ($v_{\rm sh}$) are related as $ \varepsilon_0 \propto v_{\rm sh}^2 \eta^{-1}$ with a Bohm factor of $\eta$. Five SNRs provide us with spatially resolved $\varepsilon_0$-$v_{\rm sh}$ plots across the remnants, indicating a variety of particle acceleration. With all SNRs considered together, the systematic tendency of $\eta$ clarifies a correlation between $\eta$ and an age of $t$ (or an expansion parameter of $m$) as $\eta \propto t^{-0.4}$ ($\eta \propto m^{4}$). This might be interpreted as the magnetic field becomes more turbulent and self-generated, as particles are accelerated at a greater rate with time. We report the analysis of the Fermi-Large Area Telescope data from six nearby giant molecular clouds (MCs) belonging to the Gould Belt and the Aquila Rift regions. The high statistical {\gamma}-ray spectra above 3 GeV well described by power laws make it possible to derive precise estimates of the cosmic-ray (CR) distribution in the MCs. The comparison of {\gamma}-ray spectra of Taurus, Orion A, and Orion B clouds with the model expected from Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) CR measurements confirms these clouds as passive clouds, immersed in an AMS-02-like CR spectrum. A similar comparison of Aquila Rift, Rho Oph, and Cepheus spectra yields significant deviation in both spectral indices and absolute fluxes, which can imply an additional acceleration of CRs throughout the entire clouds. Besides, the theoretical modeling of the excess {\gamma}-ray spectrum of these clouds, assuming {\pi}0-decay interaction of CRs in the cloud, gives a considerable amount of an enhanced CR energy density and it shows a significant deviation in spectral shapes compared to the average AMS-02 CR spectrum between 30 GeV and 10 TeV. We suggest that this variation in the CR spectrum of Cepheus could be accounted for by an efficient acceleration in the shocks of winds of OB associations, while in Rho Oph, similar acceleration can be provided by multiple T-Tauri stars populated in the whole cloud. In the case of Aquila Rift, the excess in absolute CR flux could be related to an additional acceleration of CRs by supernova remnants or propagation effects in the cloud., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. We analyze the energy distributions of final (stable) products - gamma rays, neutrinos, and electrons - produced in inelastic proton-proton collisions in the PeV energy regime. We also calculate the energy spectrum of synchrotron radiation from secondary electrons, assuming that these are promptly cooled in the surrounding magnetic field. We show that the synchrotron radiation has an energy distribution much shallower than that of primary protons, and hence we suggest to take advantage of such a feature in the spectral analysis of the highest energy (cut-off) emission region from particle accelerators. For a broad range of energy distributions in the parent protons, we propose simple analytical presentations for the spectra of secondaries in the cut-off region. These results can be used in the interpretation of high-energy radiation from PeVatrons - cosmic-ray factories accelerating protons to energies up to 1 PeV., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. We present the analysis of 9.7 years Fermi-LAT data of the middle-aged supernova remnant W44 and the massive molecular gas complex that surrounds it. We derived a high-quality spectral energy distribution of gamma-radiation of the shell over three decades. The very hard spectrum below 1 GeV supports the earlier claims regarding the hadronic origin of radiation. We also confirm the presence of two extended $\gamma$-ray structures located at two opposite edges of the remnant along its major axis. Based on the high-resolution gas maps, we demonstrate that the gamma-ray structures are caused by the enhanced cosmic-ray density rather than the gradient of the gas distribution. We argue that the revealed cosmic-ray "clouds" suggest an anisotropic character of the escape of high-energy particles from the shell along the magnetic field of the remnant.

We report the detection of high-energy gamma-ray signal towards the young star-forming region, W40. Using 10-year Pass 8 data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT), we extracted an extended gamma-ray excess region with a significance of about 18sigma. The radiation has a spectrum with a photon index of 2.49 +/- 0.01. The spatial correlation with the ionized gas content favors the hadronic origin of the gamma-ray emission. The total cosmic-ray (CR) proton energy in the gamma-ray production region is estimated to be the order of 10^47 erg. However, this could be a small fraction of the total energy released in cosmic rays (CRs) by local accelerators, presumably by massive stars, over the lifetime of the system. If so, W40, together with earlier detections of gamma-rays from Cygnus cocoon, Westerlund 1, Westerlund 2, NGC 3603, and 30 Dor C, supports the hypothesis that young star clusters are effective CR factories. Analyzing Chandra data of Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR) taken in 2000, 2003, 2007, 2009, and 2015, we search for time variable features of synchrotron X-rays in the southwestern part of the SNR, where stripe structures of hard X-ray emission were previous found. By comparing X-ray images obtained at each epoch, we discover a knot-like structure in the northernmost part of the stripe region became brighter particularly in 2015. We also find a bright filamentary structure gradually became fainter and narrower as it moved outward. Our spectral analysis reveal that not only the nonthermal X-ray flux but also the photon indices of the knot-like structure change from year to year. During the period from 2000 to 2015, the small knot shows brightening of $\sim 70\%$ and hardening of $\Delta \Gamma \sim 0.45$. The synchrotron cooling of relativistic electrons is one of the most effective radiation mechanisms in astrophysics. It not only accompanies the process of particle acceleration but also has feedback on the formation of the energy distribution of the parent electrons. The radiative cooling time of electrons decreases with energy as $t_{\rm syn} \propto 1/E$; correspondingly the overall radiation efficiency increases with energy. On the other hand, this effect strictly limits the maximum energy of individual photons. Even in the so-called extreme accelerators, where the acceleration proceeds at the highest possible rate, $t_{\rm acc}^{-1} = eBc/E$, allowed in an ideal magnetohydrodynamic plasma, the synchrotron radiation cannot extend well beyond the characteristic energy determined by the electron mass and the fine-structure constant: $h \nu^{\rm max} \sim m_e c^2/\alpha \sim 70 \rm\,MeV$. In this paper, we propose a model in which the formation of synchrotron radiation takes place in compact magnetic blobs located inside the particle accelerator and develop a formalism for calculations of synchrotron radiation emerging from such systems. We demonstrate that for certain combinations of parameters characterizing the accelerator and the magnetic blobs, the synchrotron radiation can extend beyond this limit by a several orders of magnitude. This scenario requires a weak magnetization of the particle accelerator, and an efficient conversion of gas internal energy into magnetic energy in sufficiently small blobs. The required size of the blobs is constrained by the magnetic mirroring effect, that can prevent particle penetration into the regions of strong magnetic field under certain conditions., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results of spectrometric studies based on the observations of very strong 3C 279 flares in high and very-high-energy bands and discuss their implications regarding the origin of radiation mechanisms. The FSRQ 3C 279 (z=0.536) is one of the most luminous gamma-ray emitting AGN. It shows variability on time scales down to minutes during strong flares detected by the Fermi-LAT. We have analyzed LAT and Swift-XRT data for the flaring periods in June 2015 and January 2018, when the flux above 100 MeV during hourly time intervals could exceed $3 \times 10^{-5}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The X-ray flux derived from Swift X-ray observations described by a very hard spectrum with photon index ~1.5 is typically explained by Inverse Compton scattering of low energy electrons and protons. Here we consider an alternative interpretation which describes the entire band from X-ray to very high energy as a results of synchrotron emission by ultra relativistic electrons or protons.

We present a numerical study of the properties of the flow produced by the collision of a magnetized anisotropic pulsar wind with the circumbinary environment. We focus on studying the impact of the high wind magnetization on the geometrical structure of the shocked flow. This work is an extension of our earlier studies that focused on a purely hydrodynamic interaction and weak wind magnetization. We consider the collision in the axisymmetric approximation, that is, the pulsar rotation axis is assumed to be oriented along the line between the pulsar and the optical star. The increase of the magnetization results in the expansion of the opening cone in which the shocked pulsar wind propagates. This effect is explained in the frameworks of the conventional theory of collimation of magnetized winds. This finding has a direct implication for scenarios that involve Doppler boosting as the primary mechanism behind the GeV flares detected with the Fermi/LAT from PSR B1259-63/LS2883. The maximum enhancement of the apparent emission is determined by the ratio of $4\pi$ to the solid in which the shocked pulsar wind propagates. The Crab Nebula is an extreme particle accelerator boosting the energy of electrons up to a few PeV ($10^{15} \ \rm eV$), close to the maximum energy allowed by theory. The physical conditions in the acceleration site and the nature of the acceleration process itself remain highly uncertain. The key information about the highest energy accelerated particles is contained in the synchrotron and inverse Compton (IC) channels of radiation at energies above 1~MeV and 100~TeV, respectively. The recent report of detection of ultra-high energy gamma-ray signal from the Crab Nebula up to 300~TeV allows one to determine the energy distribution of the highest energy electrons and to derive the magnetic field strength in the acceleration region, $B\leq120\rm\,\mu G$, in a parameter-free way. This estimate brings new constraints on the properties of non-thermal particle distributions and puts important constraints on the MHD models for the Crab Nebula, in particular on the feasible magnetization and anisotropy of the pulsar wind. The calculations of synchrotron and IC emission show that future observations with instruments allowing detection of the Crab Nebula above 300~TeV and above 1~MeV will clarify the conditions allowing acceleration of electrons beyond PeV energies in the Crab Nebula. In nuclei of starburst galaxies, the combination of an enhanced rate of supernova explosions and a high gas density suggests that cosmic rays can be efficiently produced, and that most of them lose their energy before escaping these regions, resulting in a large flux of secondary products, including neutrinos. Although the flux inferred from an individual starburst region is expected to be well below the sensitivity of current neutrino telescopes, such sources may provide a substantial contribution to the diffuse neutrino flux measured by IceCube. Here we compute the gamma-ray and neutrino flux due to starburst galaxies based on a physical model of cosmic ray transport in a starburst nucleus, and accounting for the redshift evolution of the number density of starburst sources as inferred from recent measurements of the star formation rate. The model accounts for gamma-ray absorption both inside the sources and in the intergalactic medium. The latter process is responsible for electromagnetic cascades, which also contribute to the diffuse gamma-ray background at lower energies. The conditions for acceleration of cosmic ray protons up to energies exceeding $ \sim 10 \, \rm PeV$ in starburst regions, necessary for the production of PeV neutrinos, are investigated in a critical way. We show that starburst nuclei can account for the diffuse neutrino flux above $\sim 200 \, \rm TeV$, thereby producing $\lesssim 40 \%$ of the extragalactic diffuse gamma-ray background. Below $\sim 200 \, \rm TeV$, the flux from starburst appears to be somewhat lower than the observed one, where both the Galactic contribution and the flux of atmospheric neutrinos may account for the difference., Comment: Version accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 5 figures

We demonstrate that the exact solution for the spectrum of synchrotron radiation from an isotropic population of mono-energetic electrons in turbulent magnetic field with Gaussian distribution of local field strengths can be expressed in the simple analytic form: $\left( \frac{{\rm d} \dot{N}}{{\rm d} \omega} \right)_t = \frac{\alpha}{3} \frac{1}{\gamma^2} \left( 1 + \frac{1}{x^{2/3}} \right) \exp \left( - 2 x^{2/3} \right)$, where $x = \frac{\omega}{\omega_0}\, ; \omega_0 = \frac{4}{3} \gamma^2 \frac{eB_0}{m_e c}\, .$ We use this expression to find approximate synchrotron spectra for power-law electron distributions with $\propto \exp\left( -\left[ \gamma/\gamma_0 \right]^\beta\right)$ type high-energy cut-off; the resulting synchrotron spectrum has the exponential cut-off factor with frequency raised to $2\beta/(3\beta+4)$ power in the exponent. For the power-law electron distribution without high-energy cut-off, we find the coefficient $a_m$ as a function of the power-law index, which results in exact expression for the synchrotron spectrum when using monochromatic (i.e., each electron radiates at frequency $\omega_m = a_m \gamma^2 \, \frac{e B_0}{m_e c}$) approximation., Comment: final version published in ApJ. Cosmic ray (CR) spectra, both measured upon their arrival at the Earth's atmosphere and inferred from the emission in supernova remnants (SNRs), appear to be significantly steeper than the "standard" diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) theory predicts. Although the reconstruction of the primary spectra introduces an additional steepening due to propagation effects, there is a growing consensus in the CR community that these corrections fall short to explain the newest high-precision data. Using 2D hybrid simulations, we investigate a new mechanism that may steepen the spectrum during the acceleration in SNR shocks. Most of the DSA treatments are limited to homogeneous shock environments. To investigate whether inhomogeneity effects can produce the necessary extra steepening, we assume that the magnetic field changes its angle along the shock front. The rationale behind this approach is the strong dependence of the DSA efficiency upon the field angle, $\theta_\mathrm{Bn}$. Our results show that the variation of shock obliquity along its face results in a noticeable steepening of the DSA spectrum. Compared to simulations of quasi-parallel shocks, we observe an increase of the spectral index by $\Delta q=0.1-0.15$. We present a detailed study of the gamma-ray emission from the direction of the star-forming region W30 based on a decade of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data in the 0.3-300 GeV photon energy range. The morphological and spectral analyses allow us to resolve the gamma-ray emission into two extended structures from different origins. One of them mostly overlaps with the supernova remnant (SNR) G8.7-0.1 and has a soft spectrum that resembles with the spectra of other middle-aged SNRs interacting with molecular clouds. The other shows remarkable spatial and spectral consistency with the TeV emission from HESS J1804-216, and its spectrum could be naturally explained by inverse Compton scattering of electrons like a number of TeV gamma-ray emitting pulsar wind nebulae. The escape process of particles accelerated at supernova remnant (SNR) shocks is one of the poorly understood aspects of the shock acceleration theory. Here we adopt a phenomenological approach to study the particle escape and its impact on the gamma-ray spectrum resulting from hadronic collisions both inside and outside of a middle-aged SNR. Under the assumption that in the spatial region immediately outside of the remnant the diffusion coefficient is suppressed with respect to the average Galactic one, we show that a significant fraction of particles are still located inside the SNR long time after their nominal release from the acceleration region. This fact results into a gamma-ray spectrum that resembles a broken power law, similar to those observed in several middle-aged SNRs. Above the break, the spectral steepening is determined by the diffusion coefficient outside of the SNR and by the time dependence of maximum energy. Consequently, the comparison between the model prediction and actual data will contribute to determining these two quantities, the former being particularly relevant within the predictions of the gamma-ray emission from the halo of escaping particles around SNRs which could be detected with future Cherenkov telescope facilities. We also calculate the spectrum of run-away particles injected into the Galaxy by an individual remnant. Assuming that the acceleration stops before the SNR enters the snowplow phase, we show that the released spectrum can be a featureless power law only if the accelerated spectrum has a slope alpha > 4., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The shock waves of supernova remnants (SNRs) are prominent candidates for the acceleration of the Galactic cosmic rays. SNR RX J1713.7$-$3946 is one well-studied particle accelerator in our Galaxy because of its strong non-thermal X-ray and gamma-ray radiation. We have performed NuSTAR (3-79 keV) observations of the northwest rim of RX J1713.7$-$3946, where is the brightest part in X-ray and the shock speed is about 4000 km s$^{-1}$. The spatially resolved X-ray emission from RX J1713.7$-$3946 is detected up to 20 keV for the first time. The hard X-ray image in 10-20 keV is broadly similar to the soft-band image in 3-10 keV. The typical spectrum is described by power-law model with exponential cutoff with the photon index $\Gamma$=2.15 and the cutoff energy $\varepsilon_c$=18.8 keV. Using a synchrotron radiation model from accelerated electrons in the loss-limited case, the cutoff energy parameter ranges 0.6-1.9 keV, varying from region to region. Combined with the previous measurement of the shock speed, the acceleration of electrons is close to the Bohm-limit regime in the outer edge, while the standard picture of accelerated particles limited by synchrotron radiation in SNR shock is not applicable in the inner edge and the filamentary structure., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

The direct measurements of cosmic rays (CRs), after correction for the propagation effects in the interstellar medium, indicate that their source spectra are likely to be significantly steeper than the canonical $E^{-2}$ spectrum predicted by the standard Diffusive Shock Acceleration (DSA) mechanism. The DSA has long been held responsible for the production of galactic CRs in supernova remnant (SNR) shocks. The $\gamma$-ray 'probes' of the acceleration spectra of CRs on-the-spot, inside of the SNRs, lead to the same conclusion. We show that the steep acceleration spectrum can be attributed to the $combination$ of (i) spherical expansion, (ii) tilting of the magnetic field along the shock surface and (iii) shock deceleration. Because of (i) and (ii), the DSA is efficient only on two ``polar caps'' of a spherical shock where the local magnetic field is within $\simeq45^{\circ}$ to its normal. The shock-produced spectrum observed edge-on steepens with the particle energy because the number of freshly accelerated particles with lower energies continually adds up to a growing acceleration region. We demonstrate the steepening effect by obtaining an exact self-similar solution for the particle acceleration at expanding shock surface with an arbitrary energy dependence of particle diffusivity $\kappa$. We show that its increase toward higher energy steepens the spectrum, which deeply contrasts with the standard DSA spectrum where $\kappa$ cancels out., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, to Appear in ApJ

We argue that the anomalously high fluxes of positrons and antiprotons found in cosmic rays (CR) can be satisfactorily explained by introducing two additional elements to the current "standard" paradigm of Galactic CRs. First, we propose that the antiparticles are effectively produced in interactions of primary CRs with the surrounding gas not only in the interstellar medium (ISM) but also inside the accelerators. Secondly, we postulate the existence of two source populations injecting CRs into the ISM with different, (1) soft (close to $FI \propto E^{-2.3}$) and (2) hard ($FII \propto E^{-1.8}$ or harder), energy distributions. Assuming that CRs in the 2nd population of accelerators accumulate "grammage" of the order of $1 \ \rm g/cm^2$ before their leakage into ISM, we can explain the energy distributions and absolute fluxes of both positrons and antiprotons, as well as the fluxes of secondary nuclei of the (Li,Be,B) group. The superposition of contributions of two source populations also explains the reported hardening of the spectra of CR protons and nuclei above 200 GV. The 2nd source population accelerating CRs with a rate at the level below 10 percent of the power of the 1st source population, can be responsible for the highest energy protons and nuclei of Galactic CRs up to the "knee" around $10^{15} \ \rm eV$., Comment: accepted for publication in PRD

The high rate of star formation and supernova explosions of starburst galaxies make them interesting sources of high energy radiation. Depending upon the level of turbulence present in their interstellar medium, the bulk of cosmic rays produced inside starburst galaxies may lose most of their energy before escaping, thereby making these sources behave as calorimeters, at least up to some maximum energy. Contrary to previous studies, here we investigate in detail the conditions under which cosmic ray confinement may be effective for electrons and nuclei and we study the implications of cosmic ray confinement in terms of multifrequency emission from starburst nuclei and production of high energy neutrinos. The general predictions are then specialized to three cases of active starbursts, namely M82, NGC253 and Arp220. Both primary and secondary electrons, as well as electron-positron pairs produced by gamma ray absorption inside starburst galaxies are taken into account. Electrons and positrons produced as secondary products of hadronic interactions are found to be responsible for most of the emission of leptonic origin. In particular, synchrotron emission of very high energy secondary electrons produces an extended emission of hard X-rays that represent a very interesting signature of hadronic process in starburst galaxies, potentially accessible to current and future observations in the X-ray band. A careful understanding of both the production and absorption of gamma rays in starburst galaxies is instrumental to the assessment of the role of these astrophysical sources as sources of high energy astrophysical neutrinos., Comment: Version accepted for publication in MNRAS

High energy $\gamma$ rays from Giant Molecular Clouds (GMCs) carry direct information about the spatial and energy distributions of Galactic Cosmic Rays (CRs). The recently released catalogs of GMCs contain sufficiently massive clouds to be used as barometers for probing, through their $\gamma$-ray emission, the density of CRs throughout the Galactic Disk. Based on the data of \fermi{}, we report the discovery of $\gamma$-ray signals from nineteen GMCs located at distances up to 12.5 kpc. The galactocentric radial distribution of the CR density derived from the $\gamma$-ray and CO observations of these objects, as well as from some nearby clouds that belong to the Gould Belt complex, unveil a homogeneous \textquotedblleft sea" of CRs with a constant density and spectral shape close to the flux of directly (locally) measured CRs. We found noticeable deviations from the \textquotedblleft sea level" only in some locations characterized by enhanced CR density in the galactocentric 4--6 kpc ring. Furthermore, we found a hint for fluctuations of the CR density in different locations within the same 4--6 kpc ring. The confirmation of this result with the next-generation $\gamma$-ray detectors based on the higher quality data and denser coverage of galactocentric distances, would have dramatic implications for the understanding of the origin of Galactic CRs.
