International audience; Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are new, room-temperature alternatives to superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) for measuring the brain's magnetic fields. The most used OPM in MagnetoEncephaloGraphy (MEG) are based on alkali atoms operating in the spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) regime. These sensors do not require cooling but have to be heated. Another kind of OPM, based on the parametric resonance of He-4 atoms are operated at room temperature, suppressing the heat dissipation issue. They also have an advantageous bandwidth and dynamic range more suitable for MEG recordings. We quantitatively assessed the improvement (relative to a SQUID magnetometers array) in recording the magnetic field with a wearable He-4 OPM-MEG system through data simulations. The OPM array and magnetoencephalography forward models were based on anatomical MRI data from an adult, a nine-year-old child, and 10 infants aged between one month and two years. Our simulations showed that a He-4 OPMs array offers markedly better spatial specificity than a SQUID magnetometers array in various key performance areas (e.g., signal power, information content, and spatial resolution). Our results are also discussed regarding previous simulation results obtained for alkali OPM.

Optically pumped magnetometers usually rely on optical pumping using circularly- or linearly-polarized light. We study here zero-field magnetometers pumped with elliptically-polarized light, preparing both atomic orientation and alignment with complementary geometries. We start by extending the "three-step approach" for elliptically-polarized pumping. This allows us studying the Hanle effect in elliptical polarization by comparing the analytical absorption signals with experiments made on helium-4 metastable state. We then study parametric resonance magnetometers based on elliptical polarization by using the dressed-atom formalism with one and two radio-frequency fields. The results show a good agreement with the experimental measurements and open interesting perspectives for magnetometry where symmetry breaking by pumping light is mitigated.

Optically-pumped magnetometers constitute a valuable tool for imaging biological magnetic signals without cryogenic cooling. Nowadays, numerous developments are being pursued using alkali-based magnetometers, which have demonstrated excellent sensitivities in the spin-exchange relaxation free (SERF) regime that requires heating to100 °C. In contrast, metastable helium-4 based magnetometers work at any temperature, which allows a direct contact with the scalp, yielding larger signals and a better patient comfort. However former

International audience; We present here a parametric resonance magnetometer scheme based on elliptically polarized pumping light and two radio-frequency fields applied along the two optical pumping directions. At optimum ellipticity and radio-frequency fields amplitudes the three components of the magnetic field are measured with an isotropic sensitivity. Compared to the usual alignment-based parametric resonance magnetometers, the sensitivity is degraded by a factor 2 for two components of the magnetic field but improved by a factor 9 for the third one. The open-loop bandwidth was measured to be greater than 1 kHz for the three axes. This magnetometer configuration could be particularly interesting for geophysics and biomedical imaging.

Optically-pumped magnetometers (OPM) based on parametric resonance allow real-time tri-axial measurement of very small magnetic fields with a single optical access to the gas cell. Most of these magnetometers rely on circularly polarized pumping light. We focus here on the ones relying on linearly polarized light, yielding atomic alignment. For these magnetometers we investigate three second order effects which appear in the usual regimes of operation, so to clarify if they translate to metrological problems like systematic errors or increased noise. The first of these effects is the breakdown of the three-step approach when the optical beam has a large intensity. The second one is the breakdown of the rotating wave approximation when the frequencies of the RF fields are not much larger than the rates of other atomic processes. The third one is the tensor light-shift which appears when the light is slightly detuned from resonance. This work should help to clarify the accuracy reachable with OPM, which is an important question notably for medical imaging applications.

Optically pumped magnetometers are serious candidates to replace SQUIDs, and thus avoid the need for cryogenics, in applications like magnetoencephalography. In building magnetometer arrays for imaging, a compact yet multiaxis architecture is highly desirable. Here the authors present a scheme based on atomic alignment that only requires one optical access point, bearing both a pump beam and a probe beam at a small angle to it, and that allows measurement of two magnetic field components. Measuring the third component should be possible via partial depolarization of the pump beam. Such a compact scheme opens interesting perspectives for magnetometer arrays for medical imaging.

In parametric-resonance magnetometers (PRMs), optically pumped atoms subject to rf fields allow one to measure the components of a very low magnetic field. Here, instead of using a circularly polarized light for creating atomic orientation, as in previous works, a linearly polarized light is used for creating atomic alignment. A dressed-atom formalism introduced by Polonsky and Cohen-Tannoudji is extended and allows one to map this situation to a simpler Hanle effect on aligned atoms. Analytical expressions for all alignment tensor components and photodetection signals are obtained for both the Hanle magnetometer and PRMs. A two-rf field alignment PRM is shown to display several improvements from its orientation counterpart, providing a secular third axis sensitivity and a lower degradation from the one-axis sensitivity obtained by using a single rf field. These specificities are shown to result from the apparent depolarization of the pumping light acting on the atom dressed by two-rf fields. Experimental measurements showing a good agreement with the theoretical predictions are presented.

International audience; Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) gyroscopes constitute a promising technology for miniaturizing navigation-class gyroscopes. We analyze here a configuration based on a mixture of helium-3 and helium-4. We show that frequency shifts due to the circulation of coherence between helium atoms in metastable and fundamental states have a large impact on the gyroscope drift. In order to reach navigation-class, the high-frequency source used to ignite the plasma is required to have a long-term power stability better than ppm.

We have performed spectroscopic measurements of a superconducting qubit dispersively coupled to a nonlinear resonator driven by a pump microwave field. Measurements of the qubit frequency shift provide a sensitive probe of the intracavity field, yielding a precise characterization of the resonator nonlinearity. The qubit linewidth has a complex dependence on the pump frequency and amplitude, which is correlated with the gain of the nonlinear resonator operated as a small-signal amplifier. The corresponding dephasing rate is found to be close to the quantum limit in the low-gain limit of the amplifier., Paper : 4 pages, 3 figures; Supplementary material : 1 page, 1 figure

The violation of J. Bell's inequality with two entangled and spatially separated quantum two- level systems (TLS) is often considered as the most prominent demonstration that nature does not obey ?local realism?. Under different but related assumptions of "macrorealism", plausible for macroscopic systems, Leggett and Garg derived a similar inequality for a single degree of freedom undergoing coherent oscillations and being measured at successive times. Such a "Bell's inequality in time", which should be violated by a quantum TLS, is tested here. In this work, the TLS is a superconducting quantum circuit whose Rabi oscillations are continuously driven while it is continuously and weakly measured. The time correlations present at the detector output agree with quantum-mechanical predictions and violate the inequality by 5 standard deviations., 26 pages including 10 figures, preprint format

The future development of quantum information using superconducting circuits requires Josephson qubits [1] with long coherence times combined to a high-fidelity readout. Major progress in the control of coherence has recently been achieved using circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) architectures [2, 3], where the qubit is embedded in a coplanar waveguide resonator (CPWR) which both provides a well controlled electromagnetic environment and serves as qubit readout. In particular a new qubit design, the transmon, yields reproducibly long coherence times [4, 5]. However, a high-fidelity single-shot readout of the transmon, highly desirable for running simple quantum algorithms or measur- ing quantum correlations in multi-qubit experiments, is still lacking. In this work, we demonstrate a new transmon circuit where the CPWR is turned into a sample-and-hold detector, namely a Josephson Bifurcation Amplifer (JBA) [6, 7], which allows both fast measurement and single-shot discrimination of the qubit states. We report Rabi oscillations with a high visibility of 94% together with dephasing and relaxation times longer than 0:5 \mu\s. Phys. Scr. 2009, 014015; International audience; We report the measurement of the fluctuations of a transmon qubit through the noise spectrum of the microwave signal that measures its state. The amplitude of the Lorentzian noise power spectrum allows to determine the average qubit excitation, in agreement with the estimated thermal radiation reaching the sample. Its width yields the qubit energy relaxation rate which decreases with temperature, contrary to the predictions for a two-level system solely coupled to thermal radiation. This indicates the existence of another non-radiative energy relaxation channel for the qubit.

We have designed, fabricated and measured high-Q $\lambda/2$ coplanar waveguide microwave resonators whose resonance frequency is made tunable with magnetic field by inserting a DC-SQUID array (including 1 or 7 SQUIDs) inside. Their tunability range is 30% of the zero field frequency. Their quality factor reaches up to 3$\times10^4$.
